Fried whiting, mac & cheese, rice & beans
Jeannette E.

Let me start by saying, the was great. We walked in to the restaurant and there was a sign that said "Please wait to be seated", there was a man sitting in the area already so we stood by the door. The host walks up to the podium and looks at us, and says "well do you want to be seated. Why are you standing by the door?" Never acknowledging the man already there, who was probably there for take out, who knows. After we eat, the host walks over to the table and stands there an uncomfortable amount of time goes by, my daughter and I look at him and then each other. The he asks if we want to go containers. I had the pork chops, mac and cheese and collard greens and they were all delicious. My daughter had the fried whiting, mac and cheese, rice and beans, she loved it

This is an official hidden gem in Union. Food is a 10 out of 10. John is a great host. Nice quiet date night spot if you want some privacy.

Fried Chicken Dinner with Potato Salad Mac and Cheese

Seriously the potato salad is the best I've ever had from a restaurant. Love the catfish! The seasoning for fried foods isn't very flavorful but with some hot sauce it works. I highly recommend both. Mac and cheese is kind of mushy. I don't like it. String beans are perfectly crisp tho. The collard greens are delicious but sometimes they can be a bit salty. I think I've ordered from here at least a dozen times in the last 6 months. It's the best soul food in NJ, and trust me I have tried them alllll

Fish, rice and the Collard Greens and Cabbage mix.

We were in town for business and hubby found this place. Man it was a great pick. I ordered the fish with rice and greens and cabbage mix (I can't remember the name) The fish was flavored very well and the sides were on point. Hubby got chicken and waffles. I'm not exaggerating that was some really really good chicken. Maybe some of the best I've had in a long time the waffle had such a good flavor as well Marc the owner was so hospitable and took good care of us. He let us try his mac & cheese and sweet potatoes. It's a must try. We got some peach cobbler to go and all I can tell you is if we lived in the area this would be a regular spot for us. Well done.

I got the Whiting Platter with collard greens and mac & cheese.

Happy New Year ! I decided to try Soul Food Factory. The food was good. I wished the fish were just a little bit more season, but everything else was fine. I wish that the Whiting platter came with a slice of bread or cornbread with the meal. But everything else was excellent.

6/10. A client of mine referred me to this business tor their fried chicken. So for brunch I decided to try chicken & waffles with Mac & Cheese because you can't go to a SOUL FOOD restaurant without trying the Mac! That's the real test. Customer service was good, I was the only one in the restaurant so we had some small talk that waived the awkwardness but also not too much for me to eat. Food was 3/5. Wings were pretty big but fried to perfection however didn't taste like much but grease. Waffles were good, a little heavy on the butter but good waffles. The mac was decent, it didn't taste fresh and was falling apart like it was the end of the batch lol. I was the first and only patron there so that may have been the situation but I feel like from reviews and pics the place has potential. I would try it again just to make another review if it's better.

My chicken was dry. The portions were small. The price wasn't bad so I really didn't complain very overrated.

Groovy Southern food meets refined semi-upscale downtown. What do we get?…read moreBreaded okra. Kiss my grits, but we aren't always talking BBQ when we're in the South. I've had me some soul food in Mississippi and 'Bama, though at a fraction of the price you get up North. Look, it's a Montclair thing. Pluses: Black owned restaurant serving cultural staples, plus foods for people who don't want Southern. Ambiance featured soul music, and at one point was playing Shaft! I can dig it. You're not left wanting for food quantity or quality. Plenty of shrimp in the grits, for example. Server was very pleasant to talk to with a little Southern twang to her voice. Why not five stars: Flavor needs deepening. For example, in the South I'm used to seeing okra chopped and breaded before being fried. Maybe more oily that way, more carbs... but more flavor as a result. I had the pulled chicken mac, which was a bit smaller of a dish overall (a bit intentional on my part) - and while the cheese flavors run deep, the meat did not. Shrimp and grits, I took a quick sample of my friend's grits and... I bet you can guess my finding there. Still, a very nice change from the usual Northern selection of foods. I would not hesitate to say Sweet T's is authentic and a nice visit if you're in town. You'll be paying a pretty penny wherever you eat, so you can tag this one on your list.

I've walked past this eatery for years saying I would go in soon. Finally I did!…read more We started with the corn bread and sodas, I had the pulled pork Mac and my partner had the chicken and waffles. We were very hungry and excited! The wait staff was fantastic in waiting on us as well as offering us a seat immediately upon entry. There were many servers on the floor, availing if anyone needed anything. We mentioned it was our first time, the quality of explanation of the menu lacked. We didn't really understand or enjoy what we ate. Think it's important to mention we are both black women from the American South. Maybe we ordered wrong (which I don't believe in but .... I'll digress) Maybe it was a bad day Maybe I'll try again!! We'll see.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, sometimes the best cooked food is in "The Hood" and that rings oh so true with Soul Food Chess House. You won't get Maitre D Service here, but what you will get is the best the darn Fried Fish & Shrimp outside of Chateau A La Cheryl (that's my house, lol). I've come here so many times and have tried the fried whiting, fried shrimp, chicken wings, collard greens, Mac & cheese, potato salad and cabbage. What I can say about Soul Food Chess house that keeps me coming back is the consistency of the Shrimp. No matter what day of the week or hour of the day, the shrimp is always consistent. Whenever I have a taste for fried shrimp I have my go-to spots that I frequent, but they have all proven to be hit or miss at times; but with Soul Food Chess House they never disappoint. Now let's talk about the Fried Whiting. They cooked it with just the right amount of crispness & just the right amount of crunch, I love it, although they were a little heavy handed with the salt, it was honestly the best Fried Fish of any of the Soul Food Spots in NJ that I have tried. Though the potato salad is good, it's not great, but has potential to greatness! The reason it lacks greatness is because they're missing the eggs, potato salad without the eggs is what I call a shortcut; while taking a shortcut is good, it doesn't make for greatness, however, Soul Food Chess House does make pretty good potato salad overall , add those eggs and greatness will have been achieved. So until then I'll keep them at 4 stars. But the Shrimp gets 5 Stars hands down!

However, this place wasn't bad. It has more of a Caribbean flare than southern. Still, delicious! Before the food, there's the service. I stopped in to make an order to-go. I was greeted upon entry and given the space/time to browse the menu before ordering. I partially knew what I wanted prior to coming; who doesn't take a peek at the menu beforehand, right?! The gentleman behind the counter who took my order was pleasant and patient. The food - I ordered a chicken dinner that consisted of henny wings (4) with 2 sides (mac & cheese, candied yams). And added an extra side of brussel sprouts, they looked too good to ignore. lso, I went on a Saturday but they seem to have pretty good deals going on during the week. My wings were delicious and flavorful. Pretty decent size for full wings, not stingy at all. I could have used a little more sauce, just a personal preference. Now the sides, they were just okay, except the brussels - they were AMAZING. The mac & cheese needed more cheese, it wasn't ooey gooey at all. The yams were good, a different type of sweet than the usual candied flavor. Eh. Ambiance - it's a quaint place with a few seats to relax while you wait. The wait wasn't bad being that your food is made to order. I will absolutely be back to try more menu items and get plenty more brussels. They're the star!!!

As soon as you walk in, you can smell the amazing dishes and you can literally feel the love they put on each plate as they serve the guests. I almost don't want to share this review for fear that the line may get longer but this restaurant is now one of the few that I recommend you go out of your way to try and enjoy. Their menu is classically simple but made with an abundance of care and no shortcuts in their cooking. As you are seated you are welcome to place your order in the front of the glass display, they cook everything in house and sometimes they run out of the specials so don't sleep on getting there on time. We ended up getting their lunch specials and picked one main and two sides. I know my girl loves Ox Tails and ended up getting the last plate with some candied yams and Mac and cheese. Let me tell you, we cleaned the plate and it was finger licking good!!! The jerk ribs were amazingly tender and fall off the bone. All of the sides were well portioned and absolutely flawless. Don't come here if you're on a diet there is only one way to enjoy this restaurant and it's to just dive in. FYI - you will need a nap after your meal. This place just hits your tastebuds differently; it doesn't just leave an impression, its mind shattering good. You will sing after the meal - happy dancing the whole time as you're eating.

I wanted to love it so much especially since TikTok critic/MMA fighter Keith Lee visited them in 2023, but my experience was not like his. I want to say that online reviews are almost about accurate. They were out of cold salads and collard greens which was an issue for other customers at times as well. No problem, they were super helpful and offered an alternative but not a good one. I had steamed vegetables that mashed in my mouth like mashed potatoes when I took a bite. I did end up going to another spot for collard greens and potato salad because you can't have soul-food without that. I had the rib dinner with mac n cheese and yams and a tiny piece of complimentary cornbread. The ribs definitely taste amazing but they don't take off the membrane in the back which is slimy and gross. I left that part behind. The yams were sweet and good BUT.....that mac n cheese is NOT soul-food Mac n cheese. Here's the thing I figured out, they use such little cheese but season the noodles very well that you don't truly notice unless you love mac n cheese, which I do, so I noticed it lacked so much cheese but had seasoned noodles. The rib dinner was a 3/5 because ribs were great but sides needed help. I had rice and peas as an additional side and fried wings. The wings were ATROCIOUS! I ate the smallest one and didn't eat the rest. How can you serve such huge feathered wings like that? It was a nightmare. The feathers being on it turned me off. This tells me they don't make their food with care, they move quick to be one and done and I want my food cooked with love and care. They were also frozen wings that were thawed and seasoned, I know the difference. The rice and peas were okay 3/5 as well. Overall the food was not worth the hype. Customer service was beautiful for sure but the food was not it.
