    Oxtail Rasta Pasta
    Amonde R.

From the moment we walked in, the customer service was top-tier. We were greeted with big smiles and such great energy--it instantly set the tone for the experience. We ordered the special: 3 for $45 (before tax), which included two oxtail rasta pastas and honey jerk wings--and let me tell you, every bite was PACKED with flavor. The oxtail was tender, the pasta was creamy and well-seasoned, and those wings had the perfect balance of sweet and heat. We were beyond satisfied and left with full stomachs and happy hearts. We'll definitely be back. If you're thinking about trying them--do it! You won't regret it.

Went to Crabbae in Kenilworth for happy hour and had a great time. The happy hour food prices were really good, and it being BYOB was a plus. We ordered a seafood boil along with lots of appetizers, and everything was flavorful and satisfying. The service was attentive and friendly, and they also had hookah with good flavors, which added to the overall vibe. A fun spot for happy hour with good food, good service, and a relaxed atmosphere.

First time, food was excellent, server was attentive and friendly. Ambiance was very festive.

Came here with a friend who had invited me.I've heard of this place, so I'm like ok let's go. This is a BYOB. She made the reservation so idk if that's something you must do or if you can just walk in. It's a small place.. seems like they are all over the place. By this I mean you can tell they want to have like a "lounge" bar kinda spot rather than a sit down dinner restaurant. They kinda wanna do it all so to me it seems like it's all over the place. They have hookah, & like tvs all over the place with music and videos playing. We ordered our food and it took a while to get it. So if you come here, be prepared to wait for your food. The food was ok. It wasn't nothing out of this world. I got the Mac and cheese with honey garlic salmon bites. The honey garlic sauce was more honey than garlic. Very sweet. The portion also seemed a bit small in my opinion & for the price, I feel like you should be expecting a little more. Overall I wasn't a huge fan of the spot.

The food was amazing. I've been here twice and the flavors never fail to impress my taste buds. Food may take longer than expected, however, it allows you to build conversation with those you're dining with. I enjoy the dim lights, the music was amazing and a great choice. Very nice vibe.

Food: The food was really good. It was flavorful, might not be good for your BP though . The crab legs with the butter were seasoned just right. I was able to basically build my own meal so I can taste several things from the menu. My least favorite were the lamb chops that needed to be crispier and have a sauce with it. Another downside I'd point out is that the paprika seemed to be used on almost all the food and over powered it. Service: Service was good. My friend and I got there after they stopped seating and because we came from Out of town they allowed us to sit and eat anyways. Our waitress was attentive. Ambiance: you can tell the place is a vibe, tvs with good music videos were on display, the walls had nice art painted on them, and I'd love to visit when there's karaoke or a trap lunch going on too.

I'd say we were successful in that regard, and this is probably one of the top two places I've been now in town, along with Garlic Rose. Even if you didn't have access to the menu, this just LOOKS like an upper-class steakhouse - lots of darker interior colors with deliberate use of lighting almost like the aisles in a movie theater. We did the responsible thing and made 6:30pm reservations, though the restaurant was relatively empty when we first got there (it filled up for sure during our dinner). We were immediately seated and attended to, which was a pleasant recurring theme for our experience. On the booze front, we each got an Old Fashioned, which was specifically cited on the cocktail menu, and a bottle of Daou Cab Sauvignon to share (I let my chum take the lead on that selection, which I think was influenced by the strong reviews on the Vivino app - a recommend if you're into that sort of thing). The Old-Fashioned was decent; I'm always pleased when the de facto bourbon is Angel's Envy. I'm not crazy about vermouth, which I always think gives off shoe leather vibes, but I did like the smoky profile on this one. Not bad at all, but I liked the bottle of wine better. We decided to split the Grilled Octopus app, which came with seasoned potatoes, olives and tomatoes. This was arguably the weakest part of the meal. The octopus was a little tough/rubbery and the accompanying potatoes to me were very much needed and better, frankly, than the designated star of the show here. I'm not an olive person but my chum's comment there was they were too overwhelming, taste-wise. Noted. We also got a side of parmesan truffle garlic steak fries, which I didn't have too many of because I was distracted by all of the other options on the table, but would totally get again. For entrees, it felt morally proper to hit up the cattle (when in Rome). I went with the Braised Short Ribs, which is one of my go-tos if it's on the menu. Pretty good - VERY tender and literally falling off the bone. I'd say about 20% of it was too fatty for me, and I pawned that section off on my chum, but the other 80% was primo. She got the Filet Mignon Oscar style (which my computer wanted to autocorrect to Oscars, thinking it was the umpteenth time I was typing something about the Academy Awards), and was very pleased by it. Not mindblowingly amazing but solidly above average across the board. I'm not sure why we ordered dessert at this point other than to ensure I had something else to munch on the following day, but we did that too. I got the Cheesecake w/ Marionberry Compote. This was just okay for me. Taste-wise, the cheesecake seemed a little off for my palate; maybe a little too tart? It didn't seem as milky as other cheesecakes, which doesn't necessarily mean it was bad, but wasn't my kind of cheesecake. The compote was also just okay, both in the moment and as a leftover the following day. Maybe I'm just used to getting this dessert with strawberries and compotes that are similar to that type of fruit, but I just didn't think the compote and cake meshed as well. Debatable though. There's room for improvement but this is a strong entry in the Cranford gastro scene, such as it is.

For appetizers, we got zucchini chips, fried calamari and mussels. The calamari was fried too hard and it had a very salty, spicy Chilean type sauce over it. The zucchini chips were thinly sliced, lightly battered with Parmesan cheese sprinkled over them. They were decent but nothing to write home about. In fact, after having about six or seven of the zucchini chips I began to experience heartburn from the grease. For entrees, my husband had the chicken parm. He said it was too thick and should have been flattened more before frying. It was also very breaded. My brother-in-law ordered the chicken and waffles and he said the chicken tasted day old so after having a bite of one piece of the chicken he pushed the chicken aside and called it a day. I called the waiter over and informed him about the chicken tasting day old. He didn't try to change it out or take it off the bill or get a manager. He just apologized by saying I'm sorry. My crab Mac and Cheese was decent. It wasn't seasoned the way I would have liked but the huge, plentiful chunks of crab made up for that. I ate a third of my dish and packed the rest for home where I will doctor it up to my taste. I've never been to this particular restaurant before. The only reason we came today is because my brother-in-law was here on business and staying at a hotel in the area.

The food is so creative, fresh, and delicious, the service is attentive and knowledgeable and consistent (not the norm in the suburbs), and we love the ambiance. It was a gorgeous night to sit outside, but we opted for our favorite - bar seats to watch the action. It's hard to find this level of consistency and creativity even in NYC, but to have it right here in Maplewood is so wonderful. So many restaurants in the suburbs rely on frozen, pre-made items from large restaurant supply chains that finding innovative cooking completely from scratch is a real challenge. In a sea of mediocre restaurants, Perla lives up to its name: a true gem! We have been so impressed by the daily specials this summer. We started out with a scallop crudo with yuzu, jalapeno, and shallots that is my favorite crudo right now. We followed that with the new shrimp tostada and I'm only sorry we didn't order two. Later in our meal, I spied a couple at the other end of the bar who did it right: the wife took one bite and immediately ordered a second one so that she wouldn't have to share. This is the second time we've had the tomato salad with olives, shiso, and white balsamic and I can't get over the flavor combination - it's so unexpected and addictive. We can't pass up the broiled oysters with garlic butter, Calabrian chili, and crispy shallots - a dish I was obsessed with the moment I tried it at a pop-up event before the restaurant even existed. Then we had the broiled branzino with lemon, capers, and a watercress salad - again, the only mistake was not ordering two! We were actually down the shore yesterday, but came home because we were craving this dish. We finished off our meal with anchovy toast, which our favorite dessert paired with a crisp Txakolina. It's four pieces of toasted baguette with a generous spread of really good butter topped with one piece of salt-cured anchovy and one boqueron (a pickled anchovy). I can't recommend this dish highly enough, it is perfectly balanced! We love a BYOB, but it is such a luxury that we can order right from our phones at the restaurant from a local wine shop (Lum's Cellars). It's a curated list that has some really fantastic options that all go so well with the cuisine. We started with an Alberiño and then ordered the Txakolina. No notes! We can't wait for our next meal at Perla.
