It was hot inside the restaurant, and there was only one table to sit and eat. There was plenty of food to choose from to take home dinner or dessert or both. I decided I wanted all sides. It was easier and cheaper to make that into a meal instead of buying certain sides separately. I ordered the chitterlings, collard greens, and candied sweet potatoes. The portions were large and enough for 2 people. The candied sweet potatoes were very good. They were soft and not overly sweet. The greens and the chitterlings were just OK to me. I live very close by to Soul Food Kitchen and had been wanting to try for a while. I came by at the end of the day so they were out of a few things but ended up getting short ribs with a side of rice and potato salad. The star of the trio was the potato salad, with a really nice mustardy (?) flavor that I loved. I've been a Soul Food Kitchen customer for yearrrs. They serve all the dishes that I no longer have time to cook because of my work schedule. There's so much delicious variety. Lamb chops in gravy, smokes turkey wings, yams, greens, etc. My last visit, I ordered turkey meatloaf with string beans, white rice and onion gravy, to go. It was so good. I returned the very next day and ordered chopped bbq pork, baked macaroni and cheese and greens. This order was GREAT! The pork was tender and had just the right amount of vinegar and seasoning. The macaroni was delicious and the collard greens were almost as good as my grandmother's. My food is always served with a nice, warm, cakey slice of cornbread on the side. They have a variety of desserts and beverages as well. When it's nice outside, outdoor seating is available. Tried this place out for the first time because I was craving a fried pork chop sandwich and I found out grandmas kitchen around the block went out of business. Theres isn't necessarily a unified menu just signs certain foods they carry + the food bar line, I just ended up asking if they make a pork chop sandwich since a few signs said fried pork chops. I placed my order with a younger woman and she was great and thorough. She let me know it would take 15 minutes because they prep and fry it from scratch, I also got a side of collards they only do medium sized sides though, she also asked how many pork chops I wanted, if i wanted hot sauce and how many and they provide wheat bread on the side. It was pretty affordable the pork chop was only 5 bucks and a side is 6. I was hungry so I assembled my sandwich and took a few bites in the car and that thang was good, it was seasoned well that you don't even really need the hot sauce. Collards was okay it just needed more seasoning so I dressed it up when I got home and it was fine. I was gnawing on that pork chop bone like a dog. My only regret was not getting two pieces. Only downside is I didn't get a fork and I asked for vinegar and she had disappeared in the back for a little asking if they had it and came back packed my bag and when I looked in my bag when I got in the car there was no vinegar but no big deal. I'm definitely coming back more often and will try some more items, I do agree though that you need to look at the line to see what looks fresh before ordering. This is one of my go to spots in Brooklyn for some good soul food. I love that they have a large selection of different meats and sides to choose from. I usually try to order something different each time. However, my staple side dishes usually wind up being mac and cheese and collard greens. I've never been disappointed with any of my food choices. The prices are fair and you get a nice full sized plate which my greedy self loves. Lol The staff are cool and keep the lines moving. This spot id mostly a take out spot but there are few tables and chairs on the side. They look look they could have outdoor seating when it's warm. This is definitely a spot to check out to get your soul food fix. They sell a selection of sliced cakes and pies. Im not a fan of their cakes though. I've been frequenting this place for 25+ years since my grandmother would bring me here. They are a Brooklyn staple, but I wish they would grow visually. Especially with gentrification taking over. But now I'm used to short ribs that just fall off the bone, so these slightly disappointed me but taste and tender was still on point. Mac & cheese was good! The 1st time the customer service was amazing from tasting an option before purchasing to prompt and courteous service. This time was just okay, different ladies but kept the line moving.
