Their mixed shellfish fry plate was quite tasty. We also had their calamari, which was better than any other I've had in a long time. If you like fried calamari, this is the one to have. If you are iffy about it, definitely have it here, because it's excellent. And just to keep the deep fried theme going, we had a side of fries, lol. We ended up making friends with the couple beside us at the bar. Shots were had, friendships made. More shots ensued... Now we are going to see them perform with their band at Massey Hall at the end of May. The things that happen on a Friday night! The staff were fabulous. Very friendly. It was a great group and we have managed to keep in touch. A small group of us recently met for dinner at Moxies, Fairview Mall. It was great seeing everyone over a good meal, just like old times. I had the Short Rib Beef Dip and most others had the Chicken Madeira Rigatoni, or Chicken Alfredo. My meal was pretty good, although a bit messy to eat. Service was mid at best. We appreciated the bartenders offer to make some of the beverages non-alcoholic. I expected better for an early seating when there weren't many customers. One side is for takeout but patrons are sitting there to dine in and the other side is for dine in, but the employees also do take out. Confusing YES. So I arrived in blindly following a line. I eventually tapped the person behind me, is this the line to get a table. He says no it's the line to order... okay. About 20min in the line I finally get the deal what everyone is doing, they order their seafood order at the front where the precious alive seafood is stored- it's like a pick what you eat counter. So I order their sangarita with a salad and yellow rice and a calamari with no sides (you save like $4 for just skipping that). After ordering she asked if I had a table?? I said no, then she comes out with seven yellow sticky notes and says there are 6 parties waiting for a table. I asked how long? Maybe 40min. She also advises me that i can put myself on the list for a table and she can hold my order up to 45min- they won't start cooking until you have a table. So I asked how long for takeout, she says 20min. Well I did my math, I waited 20min in line, and 20min for food that is not partially cooked so 40min, I can live with that. Watched the server rip the slip, and just fyi the fish was charged at $35/kg costing $60 and the calamari at 1lb was $22. She asked me to wait on the side, saw her put the slip with the raw fish and placed it ON THE FLOOR behind the counter. As I waited on the side I can see quite a number of orders piled in Rubbermaid containers on the floor. Behind the counter I can see the coats of the employees piled up next to what looks like to be the washed cutlery for table service and the employees use the same yellow rag to wipe every cutlery. I also saw employees clear the tables and return to prepare more cutlery- did they wash their hand in the kitchen??? I was then prompt to pay on their pay unit. It prompted me tip. SKIP tip for takeout. Then she tells me it's 2% charge if I pay credit card no charge for debit. So I pay debit. I waited patiently, I stood near the washroom and overheard how a male customer found a $100 bill in the washroom and handed it to the restaurant- they didn't even ask around if anyone dropped it. Then when I had waited 30min (10min past the estimated time, I asked for an update ). They assured me 10 more minutes. Then after 10min I asked again, they said 1min. And then they came out with my take out. The gave me a complimentary hummus for the slow service, but I don't think it made up for the undersized sides they served me. Just look at my pic and look at the website photo. Overall , if you have 2-3hours this is your place. THIS PLACE WAS ABSOLUTELY CHAOS! I'm questioning food stored on the floor even though it's in a Rubbermaid and then that bin placed back on the scale, touched by the gloved hands and potentially cross contaminating food. During the whole time I didn't see anyone clean or mop the floor- what if people are trekking sidewalk salt in the winter. I am really concerned. Eat dangerously here if you want. It comes on a platter with rice, potatoes and corn. I felt that it would be nice if you could pick your own sides, like at other seafood boils. The potatoes had no flavor inside them and the corn was really starchy and rough, with no corn flavor. It was a bit off putting. The sauce was ok, but I think they use too much seasoning powder, or over cooked the garlic because it was leaving a bitter flavor behind. I didn't love it by the third bite. The fish and chips were probably the best of what we ordered. It's the Costco fries texture which I love!!! Plus the fish is cooked well. The batter is very light and crispy. Total perfection! I'm not a big fan of oysters but the one's here are of good quality. We each ordered a pound of mixed seafood. She ordered the shrimp and the frozen mussels, while I did the shrimp and fresh mussels. Then we had the seafood fried rice. Finally, we shared an order of lobster tail; they gave us two so we had one each. The seafood rice was superb; just the right amount of spice and full of flavour. My mixed seafood was also quite good. I was pleased with the shrimp. The mussels tasted fine although do take note that the fresh mussels tend to be smaller than the frozen ones. I had some mussels that were incredibly small, to the point where it didn't actually feel like I ordered a pound of seafood. I ordered the robot blend for my pound of seafood, which was stellar. Very good Southern boil flavours. I tried the coconut and curry sauce with the lobster tail and it tasted a little underwhelming. Another note: I ordered my seafood with the sauce while my friend ordered the sauce on the side. I would actually recommend ordering it on the side, especially if you have mussels, so you can get a good coating of sauce on the mussels themselves (as opposed to the shells). I first…read morecame here a few years ago when they had their popular $1 oyster promotion every Tuesday and Wednesday, and ever since I told my mom about it, she kept saying she wanted to go because she's a huge oyster lover. A few years later, I finally made it happen! We arrived around 5:30pm on a Tuesday without a reservation. The restaurant was already starting to fill up, but they were still able to accommodate us with a 2 hours seating limit, which was fair considering how busy it got throughout the evening. The oyster promotion has changed a bit since my last visit. We were told that the East Coast Goldilocks oysters was the only choice for the $1 deal. The last time I came, the featured East Coast oyster was Malpeque, and they also offered a West Coast option as part of the promotion. This time, the West Coast Fanny Bay oysters were available for 6 for $10 instead. One thing I really enjoyed was the variety of condiments available. Other than the standard cocktail sauce, they offered options like pesto, yuzu soy sauce, and some house made sauce/ vinaigrette. The pesto has been my favorite both times, while the yuzu soy sauce added a bright citrusy touch with a hint of saltiness that complimented well with the oysters. As for the oysters themselves, my mom and I had different favorites. I actually preferred the Goldilocks oysters. They were smaller, easier to eat, and didn't have much of that fresh, briny/ fishy oyster flavour (that's why I can eat a lot as I am not a huge oyster fan like my mom). My mom preferred the Fanny Bay oysters, which were noticeably larger and had that clean ocean taste flavour that many oyster lovers look for. Between the two of us, we ended up polishing off about 50 oysters, which probably tells you everything you need to know about how much we enjoyed them! We also tried their new Ebi Katsu Slider. It was crispy and crunchy, and the shrimp inside still had that satisfying bouncy texture. I liked that it was made with shrimp pieces rather than a mashed shrimp mixture. Every bite had a nice shrimp texture and plenty of flavor. Overall, Nome Izakaya is still a great spot for oyster lovers looking for a good deal. The atmosphere was vibey, service was efficient despite the dinner rush, and a great spot if you're looking for an affordable way to enjoy fresh oysters with a few unique sauce options. It was nice finally bringing my mom after all these years, and we both left happy.
