Even with a reservation, we still had a 15 min wait. It was on a weekend so I imagine this is usually their busiest time. The smoke from the kitchen basically consumed the dining area and was very irritating. It eventually dissipated after a while, but I wouldn't recommend infants in this environment. After our party was seated, it took 15-20 min before our waiter greeted us and provided water; that was a bit annoying. After we got our orders in, things were smooth sailing from there. We were a large party and our waiter did a pretty good job at managing us and all of our requests. Food: they do not waste time bringing the food out. Most of our orders came out within 10 minutes! I ordered the Short Rib (unfortunately not pictured). It was hot, tender, and seasoned well....very good. It came on a bed of rice and some type of sauce. I was not a fan of either. The rice seemed uncooked and the sauce was too much and very liquid. It drowned the rice and practically made it soupy. I would have been fine with just the short rib. I also ordered a side of black eyed peas... also not a fan. It was undercooked and I didn't love whatever seasoning was used to prepare it. Other items I tried: Fries, Cornbread, Yams, and Soul Rolls. These were all tasty, specifically the soul roll. It came out crispy, hot, and stuff proportionately. The food here was delicious, my party of four only had one issue that the Cornish hen wasn't as tender as expected but it was replaced with well seasoned jerk lamb chops. The service was excellent, the smoky dry ice upon arrival was a hit along with the warm towels to clean our hands. The chef even walked around greeting guests. The restaurants decor is classic cotton club era, cute and classy but also has tvs mounted playing classic shows. The ambiance is casual. First, I was told I couldn't come before my reservation time because they were "very busy." I arrive and the place is nearly empty. I could truly count the number of guests. Fine. Then, it was very hot. We were sat by the thermostat and it read 82 degrees. The floors were not done. Very slippery and visibly cracked/unfinished. we went to this restaurant on Mother's Day. It was an experience for sure. The atmosphere was welcoming and festive for Mother's Day. When they set you down the dry ice experience the washcloths that were a little tablet that you added water to that was unique and then the appetizers were excellent. We had the fried green tomatoes and the deviled eggs, the main entrées we had lamb. It was excellent and the way that they acknowledge mothers. Loved this place! I reached out to secure a reservation for my daughter's 18th birthday for 20 people and they got back to me and was able to accommodate us on a Saturday night. The food was great! Especially loved the Greens, Wings and Egg Rolls! The Cuatomer Service was excellent from the Hoat to our Servers and even the Head Chef came out to thank us. Very large size wings and cooled too fast (outside perfectly fried but inside meat could have been cooked longer) didn't eat them but they did. Made reservations for Saturday at 9 for my friend's bday. (He had been wanting to check this place out for a while.) I wasn't surprised at the sneaky upsell) We ordered a lot of food and it was all good and flavorful BUT, the sides came out in intervals which we didn't like. I got the salty jerk lamb chops that came on a bed of stiff mashed potatoes along with the fried green tomatoes that were delicious. I also ordered a glass of peach tea. I was shocked to get the bill and see that they had charged me $5 for the peach tea and another $5 for a refill (it was regular tea w peach flavor). Our food came out in less than 15 minutes and was close to cold. I had oxtails w grits and a side of greens. My friend had a ceasar salad with whiting on top of mashed potatoes. The greens appeared withered and day old, the grits underneath the oxtails were pretty much missing in action. My friend's mashed potatoes were completely bland, the lettuce inside the ceasar salad was withered and the croutons were stale. I had high hopes for Soul Shack, especially after seeing it featured on Instagram and being a black-owned establishment. Unfortunately, my experience was far from what I expected. We dined in on a Monday night and made reservations well in advance, as the website mentioned it was highly recommended. Despite this, we still had to wait about 15 minutes after arriving before being seated and was seated at a dirty table. The manager, who was extremely personable and friendly, took our order and gave great recommendations, which was the highlight of the evening. However, as we were ordering our drinks and appetizers, the Soul Rolls came out immediately, making it clear that they were pre-made and sitting under a heat lamp. This was concerning, as it made us question the freshness of the rest of the food. I ordered the Jerk Cornish Hens ($32), which I assumed would be two hens, as "hens" is plural. Instead, I received just one hen, which was overcooked and drenched in paprika to the point where my plate was covered in it. The greens were overcooked and wilted, and the dish was served on a bed of mashed potatoes, which were fine, but nothing special. My sister ordered the Remy BBQ Southern Chicken Wings ($22) with mac and cheese and yams. The mac and cheese was essentially box mac n' cheese with cheese thrown on top - no flavor, no seasoning whatsoever. Her boyfriend had the Beef Short Ribs ($32), which he said were okay, but described as "mid." The sides of greens again overcooked and yams were average ( tasted like they were out the can). Our waitress, Jayla, never came to check on us, and despite asking twice, our water was never refilled. We were only given one napkin per person, so I had to go to the restroom to grab extras. Our drinks never arrived at the table, and when we asked Jayla about them, she told us, "Oh, they're sitting at the bar." We had to ask her to go get them, which didn't make sense. After some back and forth, our drinks were comped, which I appreciated. We ordered two flights: the Lemon Drop flight with Don Julio and the Sidecar flight with Hennessy. Both flights were drowned in syrup - they were nothing more than syrup and alcohol, served in shot glasses, not proper drinking glasses. As a former bartender, I can confidently say these were not mixed drinks. The total bill came to $170, which included forced gratuity and subpar service. Thankfully, the manager comped our drinks and gave us a 50% discount on the meal, which was the only positive part of the experience. A word of advice to the owners: You need to train your staff to be at the level of your manager, or allow her to run the restaurant. Hire people who actually have experience in the restaurant business. Also, just because someone asks for the manager doesn't give you the right to call the police on them. It was disrespectful and disheartening, especially at a black-owned business. I won't be returning anytime soon, and I can't recommend Soul Shack based on this experience. read more

And ALWAYS check back to see if everything is okay with meal ---that never happened. Also ALL food for table come out at same time ! I felt like this was normal procedure for them --- when each dish is ready, just stagger it out one at a time to table. ---Are you kidding me right now ! I wanted to scream. You can tell that when they opened this restaurant they focused on the food FIRST and then added everything else later. There's another restaurant around the corner from soul shack, that clearly focused on aesthetics but the food is not good. That's not the case here. The food tasted like a very good home cooked meal.
