This is an awesome sandwich. It is basically banh mi done in clever fusion. I had Burmese curry with chicken. You pick the sandwich style and then decide whether to take it vegetarian or to add chicken, pork, or another protein. The bread is soft with a good crust and the vegetables are fresh and delicious. The place is a simple fast food counter, but it is clean and the help was friendly. The sandwiches are big and a good value for the money. read more

After reading all the great reviews on Yelp, I stopped in for a sandwich in the late afternoon after a hectic day of interviewing at Northwestern. I was intrigued by the promise of unique flavors and Banh mi sandwiches, and Soulwich definitely delivered. The store was empty except for me, and the employee was very helpful and polite. I was having trouble choosing between the Paneer fig ($7.95) and the Indonesian ginger BBQ sandwiches ($7.89) and she advised the latter. It was a great choice! The Indonesian ginger BBQ sauce is a blend of pear juice, sesame seed, oil, ginger, garlic, and soy sauce. The flavors were unique and none overpowered the others - it was a very refreshing combination and I enjoyed it. The bread was thick and crispy and a little heavier than typical Banh mi bread, more like a typical sub roll. Despite the fact my visit was during the dead of winter, the veggies (cilantro, pickled carrots, and onion) were fresh, crisp, and plentiful, and complemented the sandwich nicely. Impressive! My major complaint was the quality of the chicken was very poor: lots of chewy, fatty dark meat and just plain iffy pieces of chicken. I'm no vegetarian, but the chicken was so sketchy that if I came back, I would skip the meat and go for a veggie protein instead - yeah, it was that bad. For my side, I chose the Asian slaw. It was very light, both in flavor and taste, and had no mayo. As a lemonade fan, the pomegranate and herb lemonade intrigued me so much I had to order it, but it sadly fell flat. It was pretty tasteless and bland, like maroon colored water with a fleeting smidge of flavoring - not worth it. The store was very clean and modern, with a lot of chrome and big windows. There's plenty of tables for eating it, but it could get crowded at peak times. I liked the fact that my meal came in a wicker basket, and my side in a little Chinese take-out-style box - kind of cute. The sandwich was a good size (I saved half for later, it was that big) and the price was reasonable for what you received. Tip: if you use the DTEvanston app, you can redeem it for a free pomegranate and herb lemonade. Enjoy! read more

The carrots were sort of spilling out the first few times I took a bite, and my side of Burmese chips were a touch stale (which is where I took off 0.5 from my rating), but otherwise very good. Very modern, neat and inviting. Decent amount of sitting inside and out. The worker was full of smiles, very polite and extremely welcoming. She could tell that we were first timers as we were heavily concentrating on the menu on the front counter. It was a short menu of salads, sandwiches and sides. It was easy to follow with their color coding with stars. She mentioned the top 4 popular sandwiches (including the type of meat). We ordered the most popular Indonesian Ginger BBQ with pork, carrots, cilantro, onions, cucumber, garlic, soy sauce and pear juice. The sandwich was bursting with delicious flavor and the juice and sauces gave it just the right amount of moisture. It was a lot of ingredients, but everything went well together and nothing was overpowering. The sandwich comes with a side of either an asian slaw or their homemade chips in 3 different flavors: original, wasabi, or Burmese. We ordered the Burmese which had a good spicy seasoning. Great addition to Evanston. I live in the city and work in Evanston. I'm a total foodie and this place definitely rivals some of the asian fusion places in the city. The sandwiches are hard to describe, but remind a bit of bahn mi sandwiches with a twist. Different sauces and toppings. I really liked the Thai Grilled chicken sandwich. The slaw is decent. The chips are really good, though I got the spicier ones (I have a high spice tolerance) and literally sneezed for 30 minutes. A little too much cayenne powder or something on them. I also love the sodas they offer; I had an unfiltered ginger ale - delicious. Reasonable prices too. read more

Great choice for a vegetarian/vegan sandwich when you're looking for something more than the old stand bys of falafel or roasted vegetables. Soulwich has 8 different sandwiches, 6 of them can be made vegan with seitan instead of the meat. I got the Indonesian Ginger BBQ which was slightly spicy with a good BBQ tang. It was a nice size sandwich, with plenty of seitan, which is good since usually sandwich places skimp on the filling for veggie sandwiches. Sandwiches come with asian slaw or chips. I got got the slaw, which tasted more or less like a vinegar cole slaw. The only thing less than perfect was the wait between placing the order and getting the food was a little longer than I'd expect at a counter sandwich place that wasn't very busy - only about 5 minutes, but longer than expected. I just ate lunch at Soulwich and I must say, it was a delightful experience. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was delicious and filling. What more can I ask for? I tried the Ginger BBQ sandwich with chicken. It was very fresh - I love that the bread is toasted and they add fresh veggies like cucumber, shredded carrots and cilantro. I also tried the Burmese chips and unfiltered Ginger Ale. Both were delicious. If you ever have a taste for something new and out of the ordinary, try this place. Be ready for some serious flavor though. If you like your food bland this is not the place for you. Final note, the place is really clean and pleasant and I think it was the owner who made my sandwich and she was super nice and friendly. I'll definitely go back again! read more

Just walked in here with a friend at the last minute and it was soo good! I had the wasabi teriyaki chicken and my friend had indonesian bbq with steak. The bread was so good and the sauce balance was perfect! The slaw was really good and had an interesting flavor and I had some of my friends homemade wasabi chips which were really tasty! There are a lot of interesting flavor combinations on the menu also and I cant want to try something else! The service was a little wobbly, but I'm sure it will improve with time because it just opened. The owner who was there was so nice also! I orded an Indonesian Ginger BBQ, which tasted like a banh mi sandwich on steroids but slathered in a delicious sauce. Fantastic food! Why didn't I discover Soulwich earlier?! Came here with my dad and ordered the Ginger BBQ and Praneer Fig sandwiches. We both ate half of each sandwich, and they were both amazing! After eating my half of the Praneer Fig, I wasn't looking forward wiping the incredible taste from my mouth -- but the Ginger BBQ was at the same level of awesomeness! Finally tried the place based on other reviews and I must say it was excellent. The sandwiches are like non other. There were two of us and we tried the Singapore Tikka and the Indonesian Ginger. The quality of bread and meat was great. I personally liked the Singapore Tikka better, as the BBQ sandwich was a little on the sweeter side.
