I've been going to this store since the late 1980s. As a hardcore jazz fan, I can find the rare stuff my fellow beanie-wearing hipsters talk about when we get together for a cup of bean. As a music fan, I love the low-key vibe of the place. When you walk in, they greet you quietly and let you just do your thing until you ask for help. No one objected when I went through every jazz, rock, and avantgarde record in the place. Amazing selection of vinyl! They have all sorts of stuff including ambient, experimental, punk HxC, and that weird metal that sounds like jet engines falling apart while assorted animals scream in the cargo hold. read more

I have a record collection that I wanted to sell so I sent over a list of the records, the album/recording number, as well as the prices I found for them (max). All I asked was for a quote, and which albums they would take. From the initial conversation with whomever male they had working it was straight up confrontational and defensive. He called my prices "absurd" and then said that I wasn't using discogs correctly, then proceeded to "man-splain" how to use it "correctly", thinking that I hadn't already done that by utilizing the "master; all albums" to compare my album numbers against other album numbers knowing full well the quote from the record businesses would be less due to their ability to make a profit and the condition of the records themselves. They want to rip you off and offer you nothing and say that they're worth nothing, and that they throw them out, when they albums previously sold for a profit, though not much of one. The guy said that he was "just being blunt and honest" but really it was just an excuse for him to be an asshole. There is no customer service - avoid this record store at all costs. Some of the records I have were purchased from this store by my parents. Jerk. read more

Nice selection! The first thing I noticed was a LOT of punk/goth music, but they have quite a bit of other types. We found a few things we couldn't live without. Bathroom has signed posters with hilarious messages. Not the biggest of stores but if you're in the area, it's worth a look. read more

I can and have spent hours here. Great atmosphere and overall vibe = old converted house. I come here for vinyl but there's also CD's and turntables if you like. They have a high inventory turnover so always something new to look at - that also means if you find a gem, better get it because it won't be there long. Kurt is very knowledgeable across several genres - you can sift through the inventory judge free. Their inventory fluctuates across all genres depending on what he's most recently received. When I last went, his blues section was out of control (he'd just received a bunch of first pressings from France in the 60's) and I had to cap my spending. That said, if he doesn't have what you're looking for, he'll find it. Definite local treasure. read more

My 2nd favorite record store (I work at my 1st favorite :) ) in Houston! They are not your run of the mill record store. You will not find your Taylor Swifts or whatever hot new thing is out now here. You will however come across plenty of awesome and reasonably priced gems though! I'm having a hard time figuring out why there's so many 1 and 2 star reviews for Sound Exchange, but my guess is that those are from people who don't frequent record stores. Yes the music is different, yes the people that work here are quiet (but so are most people that work at these types of establishments), and yes it is small, and all those things are just fine! While Sound Exchange's inventory may be relatively small, the quality is hard to beat. They've got a great selection of local artists as well as a well-curated collection of indie, punk, and metal. (I can't speak for the used rock section as I rarely am drawn to those records)Their prices are consistently some of the best deals in town and competitively matched with Amazon and Discogs sellers. One of the handful of sweet record stores in the city, Sound Exchange is really one of my favorites. Though relatively small, their inventory has a nice mixture of classic, semi-old, used, and new records so regardless of what category you fit into, you'll have something to look at here. I really like their used and new sections and I''ve even found some great deals on local records here as well. Some of my favorite used gems have been found here and the employees are both knowledgeable and friendly. Most importantly, they don't bug you or constantly ask if you need anything. Sound Exchange is known for being really open to carrying local acts music (including my own) and welcome all local albums regardless of how big the artist is. I was told about this place by a friend and have really enjoyed every trip I've made, even the ones where I leave without buying something. If you're looking for something indie or even obscure, you might start here because you never know what goodies lie in the bins of this funky old house. read more

Sound Exchange is my all-time favorite record store. this is where you'll find obscure, experimental, punk, post-punk, alternative, metal, classic rock, jazz, soul, reggae, local, a killer 12" singles section, etc. What you won't find is maybe some of the mundane current top 40, though there is a good hip hop/ rap selection and killer soundtracks as well. I don't get some of the negative comments one bit. like I really don't get it. what's creepy about sitting quietly while you have your own record shopping experience? It's like a library with really cool music in the background. would you go to a library and expect the librarian to come at you with a bunch of books? so why would you expect the record store staff to do that with records? Well, unless they know you, which happens once you've established a rapport. I love walking in and Kurt recommending some killer stuff or hearing both Kurt and Kevin playing music that sounds so good to me that I have to know what they're listening to. What's wrong if the people in the shop are quiet? what will be the next complaint, that they talked too much? that they "mansplained" a record to you? That they are too loud? This ain't Empire Records (look it up if you're not familiar) where there's Gen-X drama for your mama at every turn! The staff is knowledgeable AF! In fact, the most knowledgeable I've ever seen at any record store. There's no pretentiousness and they genuinely appreciate having conversations. But you have to ask. Just ask. Seriously. Just ask. That's what I do and have walked out with some of the best musical discoveries pretty much ever. I've been crate digging since I was a kid. We have some killer shops in Houston, in fact, some of the best! (Keep your Austin. I'll take H-town record shops any day.) I've also been to various shops around the country. However, I have the best in my own backyard. Plus, sound exchange have a restroom for patrons. Speaking of restrooms, my only gripe about other record shops is some don't allow shoppers to use their restroom, so make sure you call ahead if you have bladder issues. In all, Sound Exchange is a chill place that holds free shows, showcases movies here and there, has a restroom for customers, a wonderful staff, a killer selection of records, CDs, and neat stuff in the display cabinet. Used music and new music, CDs and records, music that deserves to be listened to (mostly) at least once. This cozy house isn't just for "local music snobs" (thanks, Houston Press), but it may expand your horizons beyond what's on mainstream stations. Give them 30 minutes of your browsing time on a Saturday afternoon. If you have CDs to sell, you may also like Sound Exchange. This is definitely a place you want to visit if you're a music lover with an ear for the underground. Not only is the business a Houston institution for punk and metal releases, the physical building adds flavor to what could otherwise be a boring, sterile retail environment. Disclaimer: Since I am a metal fan, this review is somewhat skewed towards that. Firstly I should say that I am happy there is a marquee place where Houston metal bands can be proud to sell their material, and a business that is happy to have it. Sound Exchange also does their part for the local music community by actually hosting bands as well. While their musical selection is superb, the only thing that stops me from giving them a full five stars (I'm actually wishing I could do 4.5) is the small inventory. I think this store could do well with a metal section twice the size of what is there now. Also, if metal on vinyl is important to you, this is not the best place to be for that. The selection is even smaller. Even then, there are gems here. As far as the competition goes, you'll find that this place sells many less commercially popular items than Soundwaves and Cactus Music. This place's inventory selection feels more like Vinal Edge to me. However, the pricing here for metal albums usually beats the aforementioned as well. read more

A Houston treasure! An independent record store that also repairs/sells used turntables. It carries new and used vinyl, CD's, zines etc. Although it does not carry every CD/record out there (although the can probably order it for you), it carries a great selection of music. I enjoy the fact that I can go record shopping without being totally overwhelmed by titles and I always find plenty of records I want to buy. This was my first time going into a record store and I'm happy this was my first one. The gentleman that own the shop, Kevin and Kurt, are remarkably nice men. They are great at offering recommendations and they make sure you enjoy yourself while you are in the store. They allow you to comfortably browse without hassling you to buy something or trying to sale you. They had so many amazing records that I haven't seen in forever. To be honest, I really wish I could like this place. I recently purchased a turntable and I am constantly searching for quality vinyl records. The prices at Sound Exchange are rather high for pre-owned vinyl. There is a bargain section in the back of the store, but the majority of the records are badly scratched or damaged. From my personal experience, the staff was not particularly friendly or helpful. You'd probably be better off making a trip to Traders Village, Half Price Books, or Cactus Music for your vinyl purchases. read more

Great little shop located in what used to be a two-story house. The selection isn't the largest, but the owner is nice and has a nice selection of albums from bands that many people probably don't even know exist. I was introduced to a few bands either because the owner was playing them over the loudspeakers or by perusing the racks of CDs. My friends also managed to find some interesting albums for themselves. Definitely a good place to shop. read more
