About 9 months ago, I wanted to start taking guitar lessons from someone who would connect with my vision of personal growth (I hoped one day to record my original music) and be patient with me. I'm not the best at practicing all the time and as a child I was notorious for quitting extracurriculars (classic Millennial). Well, almost a year later, I'm dedicated to my weekly lessons with Nick. His studio is an intimate space for fostering creativity and collaboration, and I can't say enough about his teaching style. He is encouraging, patient, talented, and depending on what you'd like to learn, he can run through heavy music theory or help you figure out how to play your own stuff. He really tailors lessons around your own goals. I brought in some difficult starter music and instead of telling me to start with something easier, he helped me pick it apart and take it piece by piece so I could eventually play what I wanted. I highly recommend Sound Space and hope to see Nick's business grow - it's so incredibly inspiring seeing someone so passionate about what he does (and a wonderful person, to boot) become a blossoming success at his dream. I have gone through 3 guitar teachers in the 7 years I have been attempting to teach myself guitar, and with both of my previous ones I just ended up giving up because I didn't mesh well with the teacher. That is the exact opposite with Dave! He's a great teacher and provides a great environment for any skill level to start learning guitar. I've been taking guitar lessons with David over the last few months and it has become my favorite part of my week. I'm a fairly experienced musician but wanted to start honing my skills on guitar. David has created the perfect environment for me to unlock new doors with the knowledge I already have - It really feels like I'm just jamming at the studio with a friend, which is way less stuffy than traditional music lessons I've had in the past as a kid. I've always had a guitar around and always knew I wanted to learn how to play. A little over a year ago, I searched the internet for guitar lessons in my area and found Sound Space. Working with Nick, I started practicing a handful of songs that I had been wanting to learn -- nothing major, but it gave me a reason to start practicing. Then, we moved into music theory, which has given me the vocabulary to talk about musical concepts and patterns I've been noticing my entire life. Some weeks, it's hard to find enough time to practice. But lessons aren't linear: I never feel like I'm falling behind, and I'm always looking forward to my lesson time. I started taking lessons at Sound Space when I moved to Atlanta in September. I wanted to do something for me for 1/2 hour every week. When I came to the Goat Farm for my first lesson, I loved the artist commune atmosphere and being surrounded by artists in other disciplines. Nick, the owner dude, was very approachable, passionate about music and guitar, and excited to be providing an affordable and valuable service as a new small business owner. Since taking lessons for four months, I can now tune my guitar, play four songs, and understand the basics of tablature. I love going to lessons every Tuesday as a way to unwind, chat with Nick, and play some of my favorite jams. Nick provides the structure that works best for his students and offers helpful practice tips and appropriate teacher interventions. Since my goal was to learn to play Landslide, we focused mainly on that goal each lesson, but also added fun new elements to each practice - such as holiday songs around Christmas and interspersing other awesome 90s songs. Also, if you're looking for a social aspect, Sound Space organizes occasional socials during which you can meet and collaborate with other students. I have been taking guitar lessons with Nick for almost a year now. I knew NOTHING about the guitar when I started, and was looking for something completely new to take my mind off of work for a few minutes per week. Lessons with Nick are a completely relaxed, fun experience. He is incredible at the guitar himself. He celebrates every small milestone you accomplish (learning your first bar chord, finally practicing two weeks in a row, etc). It amazes me how he jumps from teaching me, an attorney, right into teaching lessons to the kid who arrives after me. I've also used him for guitar repairs to my own guitar, and for my boyfriend's much neglected bass. That bass came back new. I couldn't recommend Nick any higher as a teacher, guitar repairman, and person in general. read more
