This is a fun spot and a bit 'fancier' than the other location. The meh is the same as the other location but this also provides more of table service and a place for bigger parties. The food is authentic and delicious. It is full of deep flavors and rich tastes, and you can find something for everyone. Our group tried sausage, cabbage rolls, Olivia salad, vereniki (savory type dumplings) and borscht. All so full of flavor I wanted to order even more! The portions are generous if it does seem a bit pricey you get quite a bit with each dish. We love being able to go here and try the various flavors. I have been to Soup & Sausage Bistro three times. When I moved to Phoenix earlier this year, I was pleased to discover that there are several Eastern European restaurants in town. Soup & Sausage Bistro is one of them, serving Ukrainian and Polish cuisine. Parking won't be a problem in the lot they share with several other businesses. Ambiance (3/5): Don't let the simple decor or the non-descript exterior fool you. While it's a casual restaurant, and a small one at that, I'm judging this restaurant mostly on the quality of its food as Eastern European food is generally hard to come by. You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. There are five or so tables, so tiny as I mentioned. While casual, it is homey. Service (3/5): Pretty average service. They don't check on you. They're not overly friendly. Yet, once again, it's the food I'm primarily concerned about here. Drinks (4/5): Soft drinks and Eastern European beer for the most part. They have a nice selection of Ukrainian beers, which was a first for me. I enjoyed trying something new. Food (4/5): Now for the good stuff. As you would expect, there is a lot of soup and sausage on the menu. Including some famous one like borscht and Polish kielbasa. I've also tried their chicken meatball soup which was solid, but if it's your first time, go with the borscht. Don't let the purple color (from the beets) steer you away. Beyond soup and sausage, they have a lot of other classic dishes including pierogies, chicken Kiev, potato pancakes, and blintzes. And if you're looking for something sweet, their top seller is the honey cake. As good as it sounds. Everything I've had at Soup & Sausage Bistro has been above average to great. They have some nice combos that allow you to try a variety. The prices are affordable. Join their rewards program by entering your phone number at the kiosk and you'll get deals. First time eating here, came in on a Sunday morning. Located in a shopping center with lots of parking. Table and chairs with booth tables, great for both small and large groups. Air condition is perfect, not freezing and not above room temperature. Music playing inside was instrumental piano. This is a place where you proceed straight to the front counter and place your order with the cashier. You sit wherever you like. The menu is located behind the counter above the wall as well as a menu in front of the exterior of the store near the front door in large colored photos. I ordered the hunters stew, in house made bread, French fries and fountain drink. Hunters stew was superbly tender. It is basically a large portion beef stew enough for 2 people. Portion and tastes are both impressive. French fries were amazing, salted just right and came on a full plate. Generous servings also enough for 3 people. In house made bread was a little different for me. I'm used to Cheesecake Factory style bread. The bread here was fresh and served with butter. Just good old fashioned bread, I enjoyed it greatly. Fountain drink was amazing, I had the Barq's root beer red crème soda which is something that is very rare to see. Tastes like cherry Pepsi inside a Barq's regular root beer. Service was friendly, cashier mentioned the popular items as I explained it was my first time eating there. I would highly recommend. If you're a fan of cabbage rolls, in my opinion, this is one of the best in the valley! There are three to an order, either pork or beef ,with two different sauces available. The borscht was delicious it came with sour cream and a very dry bread it was an extra charge for bread (0.49) and sour cream(0.69). I did order a beef cabbage rolls it was filled with rice and almost no beef. My friend had the combination plate, the pancake was very dry and the pierogies were dry too,her beef cabbage rolls had almost no beef but lots of rice. To start, I appreciate the fact that this restaurant is conveniently located in the neighborhood and has an attractive sign. However, I must admit that I wasn't particularly thrilled with my dining experience. While I don't have much exposure to Ukrainian cuisine. Throughout our entire time there, we remained the only customers in the restaurant. There were many tempting options on the menu, and we ended up quite a bit of food for our dinner - just the two of us. We ordered soup, perogis, and my husband tried one of their sausage dishes. The food took quite a while to arrive at our table. Unfortunately, everything we tasted was rather bland and unexciting. It lacked seasoning and simply tasted like something a finicky and spoiled child would eat. Perhaps Ukrainian cuisine typically isn't heavy on salt, pepper, or bold flavors. I have a Ukrainian friend who even considers pepper to be spicy. We tried Soup & Sausage Bistro for the first time this week. It won't be the last. Koreen was very helpful, making recommendations to help two Ukrainian food rookies decide what to order. We shared a combo plate with smoked sausage, bratwurst, five different pierogies, and sauerkraut, and also ordered a cup of beet borscht. It was a great introduction to what this restaurant has to offer. The borscht was terrific and a "cup" is actually a good-sized serving, plenty for the two of us to share. There are many other enticing items on the menu, so we will definitely need to do further exploring with Ukrainian cuisine. Other than the food, the restaurant is small with maybe 6-8 tables and booths. There was music playing but at a reasonable level so it didn't hamper conversation. Food: Well coming from Moldova and having Eastern European in laws as well, very familiar with the cuisine. We were pretty close to Odessa, so these are the dishes that we grew up on. Came with a generous portion of fresh potatoes, unfortunately they were over salted for my taste. I would order again, but note to not add any salt. We had pelimini with chicken and soups, all were excellent. The winner of our first dinner here were the chicken stuffed crepes. Not only was the filling same/better than my in-laws(per daughter) but they were also folded in triangles just like she does. Overall it was just a very pleasant experience, since my mother in law does not cook any more. Service: Its an odd setup: when we came in not sure if we order at the counter or sit down. We were told for dine in to sit down. Food was brought out, but drinks not refilled. Only one waiter in the whole place that was running the register, packing pick up orders, hoping into the kitchen and then waiting on tables. There is a sign in the window that they are hiring, so not counting the lack of full service sit down, based on that. Overall: WE ARE COMING BACK FOR SURE! This place is close to home both in distance and food. Quality it excellent as well. Next time I am going chicken Kiev. This place does not serve authentic Ukrainian food. The pierogies have thick, tough dough, and the fillings taste nothing like traditional recipes. Even the sautéed onions were greasy and flavorless. The soup I ordered bore no resemblance to anything you'd find in Ukraine. Potato pancakes, usually my favorite, were so oily and unpleasant that I couldn't eat them and threw them away. I doubt anyone working here has any real connection to Ukrainian cuisine. To get good Ukrainian food I visit Edmonton in Canada. I'm glad to know I don't have to go that far now. The Pergories were excellent. I liked that they offered them boiled or pan fried. The decor hasn't changed much from the Indian food place that was there previously, which is a shame as it is a bit underwhelming. The service was fast and friendly.
