I had a wonderful experience here at the Slaughter location after a not to great one at the other location. Steve Sr. Johnson did an absolute great job on my head. What I particularly enjoyed is that he had an open availability at 6am, yes 6am in the morning! Me being such an early bird and running so many task before morning rush hour it was perfect for me. What's better is I arrived early and I was seated and serviced before my appointment even began. Steve was a joy to converse with as he told me about his family life and years in the service. The location is located in South Austin and surrounding and connected next to a few other businesses. The shop was very clean and welcoming. Have been going for a couple of years now. Robert D. has not disappointed. I am very thankful for the early hour appointments he has available. Being an early bird it is great to get the haircut out of the way early. Very relaxing and inviting shop. All the barbers are non-stop interacting with customers as well as each other. 100 STARS - If I could leave 1000 stars for Reiko I would. My son is 18 months old and I have been dreading his first hair cut because I knew he would be TERRIFIED. From the moment we sat in Reikos chair my son started screaming and from that moment on it only got worse - literally. Throughout the whole experience Reiko remained calm, comforting and not to mention SOMEHOW managed to give my son the cutest hair cut!!! Screaming, hitting, sweat, and lots of tears later... I couldn't believe the absolutely precious haircut my son got. I cannot imagine how great of a haircut this guy would give, given a somewhat decent client. Meh. I had a 4:00 pm appointment for my son. I was surprised that they didn't have a protocol for receiving customers. I approached the barber, shook his hand and introduced myself and my son. The cut was decent, but not above and beyond. My son has long curly hair and I've been struggling with purchasing the right products for him, as I have straight hair. I asked the barber for advice on products for curly hair. He said,"Oh I don't know and asked his associates around us." They offered curly hair cream and mouse from HEB. The most off-putting aspect of this experience: while in the waiting area, the staff held a conversation about pricing and that they should charge more for walk-ins, long hair and over due maintenance cuts. I don't know if the conversation can be attributed to my son, as he did have an appointment, though that fact seemed to be missed by the lack of greeting at first entrance. However, my son had long curly hair past his shoulders, that had not been cut for several months. Either way, the conversation should have been had at a time when customers were not in ear shot, Pros: my son's hair is even - he had places longer than other areas of his hair length. Another pro is that it was quick and affordable. It was $20 and I did tip $15 ($12 cash) to pay it forward for the discount. The barber "Jut" was nice and fast. This is a good place for a quick cut if you have low expectations, and you are short on time. read more

Johnny Sullivan pays zero attention to detail. I had easily the worst haircut I've ever gotten. He finished in 10 minutes, didn't bother doing any straight razor work, and acted like he couldn't care less. The first five minutes were spent with him in deep conversations with the barbers that weren't working with clients while I sat waiting for him to start. I spent 35 dollars on a haircut that I could have gotten at super cuts for a fraction of the price. I rolled the dice on a barber that was available and I screwed myself for it. Had I known he was a cosmetologist, and not a barber, I would have gone elsewhere. He asked me how it looked, and I knew there was no way this guy could do any better. I regret not making the drive to Avenue Barber shop. At least they care about trying. UPDATE: The owner took the time to reach out and apologize. He acknowledged that there was no excuse for the service I got, and wanted to bring me back in to fix my haircut. I can't blame the whole experience on the shop when it was really just one individual. read more

Let me start by saying that I don't go to barbershops but I recently got an undercut and need a barber in my neighborhood. I was a little nervous initially being new to barbershops. I was referred to Matt by Antonio, who also cuts hair there. Matt did a great job! He was quick and precise with my cut. The shop is clean and everyone dressed was professionally. My son told me about Danny and SABS, so I gave Danny a shot. It was a very pleasant experience overall. I arrived a bit early and was greeted warmly by another barber near the front. He offered water and then informed me that my barber, Danny, would be with me soon. I appreciate great customer service even if it's no one that particularly gains from my being there. So 5 stars right off the bat. I could tell the joint was popular and had a significant amount of repeat business as everyone seemed to know their barber quite well. Another great sign. The place was neat, clean and comfortable and easy to get to with plenty of upfront parking. Danny greeted me and listened to my concerns about my hair and what I was trying to do with my look. He never made me feel rushed or in a hurry to get me in and out ASAP. The cut was just as I wanted and Danny was a talented and respectful barber who truly seemed interested in not only the outside of my head, but the inside as well. I'll be back. read more

My first visit here for a much needed haircut after 4 months. I chose Robert after viewing the bios for the other barbers since I'm a sr cit a standard cut was in order. I have to say I got one of the best haircuts ever and he thought enough to ask me about the length before going past the point where a-little is too much. That was much appreciated. the barbers are talented, but very poor customer service skills. based on my review average, i typically do not rate businesses this low, but i have to say this business did not handle me well. the barber that i was taking my son to see, antoine or antonio is a great barber... but lacks customer service skills as do the rest of the barbers. as a barber, you are going to cut children's hair from time to time. antoine needs to adjust his technique while working with youth. most children under 8 y.o. do not have the patience to sit and get a pristine lineup. the first time i took my son to see him, it was a little rough because my son is one of those children who is not patient. antoine was pretty patient, which i appreciate.. and his haircut came out great. second time, my son could only tolerate half of the haircut... he didnt charge us.. but i offered to pay anyways and he declined. he recommended that the next time i made an appt, make sure that its the last appt of the day, so he can be more patient and have time to take breaks when i my son wants to get up. a few weeks later, i did just that.. i made an appointment for end of day. we arrived at the shop 15 minutes early (as usual). we waited from 6:15-7p for antoine to show up. he never called or texted to say something came up or he was unable to do anything. all of the other barbers showed no empathy for the situation. i will not be patronizing either one of these businesses and urge you to find a barbershop elsewhere. read more

Been coming here for a year after my old shop closed. Initially, I was impressed with my barber's work. He knocked it out of the park on the first cut. But on subsequent visits, consistency became an issue. He was very attentive with my fade, but once that part was over he would speed through the rest of the cut. My hair would be uneven on top and haphazardly blended. He would also spend a lot of time texting on his phone during the cut, which I found to be disrespectful, especially since I always tipped generously. Never once did he ask me if things were okay during the cut, leaving me to wonder if I'd be happy or displeased when he turned me around to face the mirror at the end. After my last cut, which was faded perfectly, I had to have a girl over to fix his sloppy work on top. I can't in good faith return to this shop, which is unfortunate because it's local and the talent is there. But for $50+ I need to have confidence in my barber and that's simply no longer the case. read more

South Austin Berber Shop is the opposite and the perfect spot for me. From day 1, it always felt very welcoming. Everyone's friendly but not aggressive. I made a mistake when scheduling my appointment. When I walked in a Barber asked me who I was scheduled with. We discovered I never confirmed the appointment. Rob sat in the back, his 2:30 was late, for 30 minutes and said nothing. I wish I would have been told they couldn't fit me in right away. I instead sat for an hour after being called a "walk in." Absolutely horrible for walk ins. I do not recommend this joint. Friendliness does not equate to customer service. "It will be a minute" does not equate to 2 hours in waiting time. There is no written list for walk ins. Stay away from this place if you don't have an appointment. Since I was disgusted at how slow the barbers are (45 minutes to an hour to clip and cut hair) I had to walk out. If you're thinking, "it will be ok to walk-in" don't waste your time. In my case I wasted two hours. From a customer experience perspective, this was a horrible experience. The floor was unswept for an hour and 45 minutes, no less than 3 barbers left for the day rather than cut my hair (walk-in). I predict this place will go out of business soon, unless they set up a system to satisfy ALL customers, not just those with an appointment. read more

I have been going to South Austin Barber for years and the service has been outstanding. The last several months however has been a miserable experience. Almost every time I go the AC is not working. All the staff and customers are completely drenched in sweat. I really wish management would do something to fix the issue. I can't say I will be coming here much longer if this keeps up. read more
