We recently had our office holiday dinner here and had a great experience. We went on a Monday night, so the place was pretty empty, which worked out perfectly for our group. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and both the drinks and food came out quickly since the kitchen wasn't too busy. We ordered several appetizers to share, and my favorite was the grilled octopus--it was perfectly seasoned and incredibly tender. For my entrée, I had the shrimp risotto, which was nicely flavored and very satisfying. We also ordered a variety of desserts to share, and I liked the churro bowl the best. Amazing place to get dinner in Greenwich Avenue! My favorite appetizers were the mezze plate and the burrata toast. The mezze plate came with small bowls of hummus, baba ghanoush, tzatziki, and roasted pepper dip, as well as pieces of pita, cucumber, carrots, celery, and olives. All the dips were delicious. The burrata toast had roasted squash, apples, maple walnuts, pomegranate seeds, a little bit of greens, and a balsamic glaze. I'm a burrata lover, and it's usually served with tomatoes, but I loved this unique blend of ingredients. For my main dish, I had the Maine lobster roll. This was served cold, with mayo, on a potato roll, with a side salad. The portions were huge and the lobster was so good. For dessert, I tried the skillet chocolate chip cookie, the chocolate lava cake, and the pavlova. Everyone at my table agreed that the chocolate chip cookie was the best dessert. It's served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup. In one word, heavenly. For drinks, I had a yummy lychee martini. My dad had wine, and he asked me to add to my review that he thought the wine markup was very reasonable. It's a beautiful restaurant, and service was great. Very disappointed with my experience at South Bay. The man at the front (the host) completely ignored me and only spoke to my boyfriend -- not even a hello and only acknowledged him when we left. It felt disrespectful and outdated. Once we were seated, our waitress was very nice and attentive, but the food wasn't great, and the whole place smelled like church incense, which was really off-putting while eating. Overall, the poor first impression from the host set the tone for the night. Would not recommend, especially if you expect to be treated equally and with basic courtesy. read more

South Bay on Greenwich Ave was a very nice surprise. I cannot believe it has taken me so long to try it out and I cannot wait to go back. We ordered quite a few things as our eyes were very large as we read the menu. The Crispy calamari is at the top of my favorite fried calamari I've ever had it's a must order. The steamed buns were beautifully presented and delicious. The tuna tartare was pretty good. The homemade chips were great, but the tartare itself was a bit too blended and didn't have pieces of tuna. The grilled octopus was plated well and quite good. Perhaps it was slightly over cooked, but I'll definitely order again. The entrees counties to please. Cioppino is probably my favorite dish so whenever it's on a menu, I must try it. It was quite good and perfectly sized. My guests also ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, which had great presentation, but could have used a tad more flavor and the Burger, which was a huge hit. I was shocked when everyone still had room to try a treat from the dessert menu. The Cheesecake was the winner and although it was it came with strawberry jam, it definitely was a blackberry sauce. I don't get it. Cost to run a business on the Ave must be higher than average so one would think the service and food would be at least average. Although the service was attentive, they all seem so miserable. Not sure they understand the concept of fine dining or basic restaurant protocols. Took long to get drinks and the place was not busy. The clam chowder was very creamy, maybe a bit too much. I enjoyed my lobster roll although the bread wasn't quite what I expected. The salad that came with the roll was the highlight of my meal. A taste of octopus and a scallop from the plates of my parents were delicious. I shared truffle fries with my brother, so it was a family affair. The service was nice, although one of the forks wasn't clean. The ambiance was pleasant enough and I liked the stained glass style windows. Table cloths and cloth napkins were a nice touch as well. South Bay is one of our Greenwich staples. We've done both brunch and lunch a number of times, and have never left disappointed. The drinks have all been great, and always very consistent. One standout, if I'm deviating from a Tito's, is the Pearl Diver. Where does one find lychees so enormous? The oysters are usually a must order - a touch pricy but always fresh. The calamari and tuna tartare are fan favorites, and honestly, if I'm not going full brunch, the fish wrap with halibut is almost always what I end up with, I can't get over how good it it. Grab an order or two of fries, and another Pearl Diver, and you're in business. I'd recommend making a res, especially for prime brunch time, and double especially on a Sunday, when they have a DJ - that's when it tends to be the busiest. read more

We came here for a lunch date for a special occasion and were happily surprised with the food. My lunch date and I got the crispy chicken bao buns, halibut tacos, and the organic kale and quinoa salad. Everything was incredible and fresh. The only issue was our waiter, who wouldn't finish listening before walking away and actually ended up wordlessly taking our dessert plate away from us WHILE we were eating it, leaving us in shock. He literally just came by and snatched the plate off the table with us eating mid-fork in the air. The reason ended up being he forgot to add a sparkler on given it was a special occasion, but it was very bizarre and rude. Though we still tipped over 20%, the impression we left with was South Bay place has its regulars whom the waiter was extremely friendly with and more attentive to (even walking away to seat them while in the middle of taking our order) because he might not find new customers worthwhile. I liked the mushroom flavor in it. My husband ordered Sesame Crusted Seared Tuna. He said it's one of the worse dishes he's had. He literally had to wash down every bite with water. It was flavorless. The mashed potato and asparagus that came with it also sucked. Mashed potato was super dry and wasabi in it tasted strange. We also had a truffle fries side. Super overcooked. My tuna tartar was good, but our hummus plate lacked a array of serving utensils, as we are in a pandemic and I thought the idea of sharing dips during covid19 is pretty gross. I met my bro who lives in the city so it was very convenient for him to take the train and cross the street to get to the restaurant. We started with an appetizer - the smoked salmon avocado toast which was good. The issue is that the app came before our drinks- a gin martini and a bourbon. The waitress had to let us know that the bar was backed up. We had a 7:30 reservation and when we arrived the bar was pretty empty. At the time we were done with our app we still didn't have our drinks. Finally- they arrived just before our main meal. I was a bit disappointed as my martini had no garnish. Not the traditional lemon twist or the more popular olives. And if it had a hint of vermouth I'd be shocked. So essentially it was straight up gin- ice cold. Luckily, that's how I roll. My bro said his was good too. Our main meals were very good- I had the sesame crusted seared tuna and he had the halibut. We enjoyed the meal. Only downside was the wait for drinks- I know, judge me as a lush but dining out is a process. Cocktails included! Overall- good experience. Music got way too loud mid main meal. My boyfriend and I went to South Bay last night to meet a friend for a drink. We ended up there, 1) because we have eaten here before and love their food and 2) we had the worst experience at an establishment across the street minutes before and didn't want to continue our meal there. With that being said we were greeted with the friendliest staff. Our server Johan (I do hope I spelled his name correctly) was amazing. Truly a wonderful server and equally wonderful human being. A person who you could tell from the minute we sat down, takes his job and the customer's experience very seriously. As a server myself I know how to treat diners to enhance their experience without being overbearing or intrusive. He was a delight. We ordered a bottle of wine, (as they are half off on Tuesdays) and the Mezze plate with hummus, baba ghanoush, tzatziki and roasted pepper dip with warm fresh pita as well as veggies and olives. Always consistently amazing and just what we needed after our horrible experience at the previous establishment. We should have trusted ourselves and just started out at South Bay. Johan was attentive throughout our stay. The outside dining experience was lovely as they have several heaters to ensure the customers are warm and cozy. While the waitstaff is lovely, the manager is one of the rudest individuals I've ever encountered. I organized some drinks (along with food) with some friends at South Bay. The bartender Juan was great and the rest of the team, but the Manager (I believe his name was Mo) he was so unpleasant to deal with. Food and drinks were good. Ambiance was fine. But this star should be zero for the lack of professionalism from the manager. We easily spent over $2K with our large group, in two hours (during a quiet time, we were the only ones there. Anyone in Greenwich clearly knows they're history and how they have served thousands of underaged kids drinking there every weekend since they opened, honestly don't know how they still are open. Waited for about 30 minutes to ask for a glass of wine. Got told my ID was fake and even with my four other identifications they felt uncomfortable with me. I recently moved back to Fairfield County and wanted to try a new restaurant I hadn't been to before. I decided on South Bay, a restaurant located at the bottom of Greenwich Avenue. The bartender Patrick was fantastic. His knowledge of bourbon and whiskey rivaled my own, and I was very impressed with his professionalism and enthusiasm about South Bay and mixology. I didn't try any of their food, but I absolutely will in the future and I recommend going to see Patrick at the bar. His knowledge of spirits and his passion is second to none. Our snippy waitress told me I couldn't just order sides as a meal. Um, why are they priced separately, then? I ended up getting the Brussel sprouts and cauliflower sides. They were really good. My husband got roasted chicken. Flavorless, needed seasoning. The potatoes had hard chunks in them and were cold. At those prices, nothing should have to be sent back. Deplorable. The food was so delicious and the staff was wonderful. The Caesar salad was unusually delicious and loved they used crouton flakes which enhanced the texture.
