I love this place, can't believe it's been three or four years since I've been here last. Came with a couple of lifelong friends. We had the salad with Gorgonzola. But, I come for the lobster. Had a 3 pound lobster that was broiled, but they actually steam the claws I believe. Phenomenal lobster. I had a nice size baked potato and broccoli but really that's just unnecessary extra food. Rolls were good too. Really friendly service. Nice cozy vibe. Really good pour on the bourbon on the rocks. I had rice pudding for dessert which was a gigantic portion and very tasty, and my friend shared a hot fudge sundae, which looked very good. I thought the price was very reasonable. Service was admirable and very attentive Ambiance was low key a bit too loud and a bit dim... chairs were cushioned and comfortable. Food was satisfactory. Pretzel as appetizer was humungous. Not sure there as any salt and could have been a little more cooked/crispy. The calamari was cosmopolitan and could have been i) more generously seasoned and ii) cooked a bit more/crisper. The stuffed shrimp was good--nicely seasoned crab--perfectly cooked and of average flavor overall...maybe a hair better than ok. Fries were a little overcooked. Spinach was steamed and unremarkable. Of note--the mashed potatoes seemed to have vinegar in them. Maybe that's how they cook them in Germany but neither too creamy (like cream-taste) nor overly buttery. Overall it was average or maybe a bit more or a bit less. If I came back--and might just do that because service was very good--I'd probably get the wings or a burger and request fries to be lightly fried...and maybe have a few adult beverages prior. read more

We had been talking about trying this place for years, and we finally went with our friends, who had been there before. We ordered fish and chips. The fish was sufficiently tasty and crispy, though the fries were rather thin. The "tartar sauce" was unusual, and seemed more like a variation on tartar sauce, and didn't complement the fish as well as I expected. My wife and I shared one order, so we only had two pieces each. One of our friends ordered sesame-crusted tuna, and apparently enjoyed it. I might order that if we return, which we will probably do. They are known for their key lime pie, which I ordered, and enjoyed. The restaurant itself is an attractive space, and we felt comfortable there. Busy on a Friday night - reservation recommended! Our party of 2 sat at the bar and ate dinner there. Chairs were not very stable, no hooks for purses to hang. An older spot that seemed to have a lot of regulars, which is always a good sign! Overall, food was great! Seafood is definitely the move. Cup of coleslaw appetizer is offered to everyone - very unique! Never seen that before. This was the worst food I've eaten in a long time. Bay Scallops were not fresh and rubbery and fishy. Sent them back and ordered another dish which was awful as well. Had a wonderful dinner at Gus's this past Saturday evening. Second time I've dined there, both times I was happy with what I ordered and happy with the quality, quantity and service. This time around I ordered the Mussels Marinara and it was outstanding ! An abundance of mussels and pasta, I think the best I've ever had. The sauce lacked a little basil and oregano, but was tasty nonetheless. The presentation was very original for this dish ! I was totally satisfied ! This restaurant clearly doesn't understand what the word "reservation" means or worse, simply doesn't care. On multiple occasions we've made confirmed reservations only to arrive on time and find that our table has been given away or is being held for someone else- with zero explanation, zero accountability, and absolutely no concern. It's become painfully obvious that they prioritize regulars and if you're not part of their inner circle, don't expect to be treated with basic courtesy, let alone professionalism. We came here to enjoy a meal, not to stand around while the staff blatantly ignores commitments they made. A reservation is not a suggestion- it is a contract. If a restaurant can't even keep its word on that what else are they cutting corners on? We're done. There are too many restaurants in this area that know how to treat customers with respect. This clearly isn't one of them. I suggest you take your business elsewhere where it's appreciated. read more

This place is a 3 1/2 star for now. It has a lot of potential. I have to go back soon. I Stopped in for the first time for lunch. Restaurant is very cute, with lots of nostalgic photos all over. It was a very cozy, at home feeling. I ordered a Gorgonzola salad with blackened chicken, and my friend got the fried calamari. The Fried calamari was the most tender delicious fried calamari she said she had had in the United States! It was absolutely lightly battered and perfect. My salad was very good, the chicken was very flavorful,spiced well and a perfect accompaniment to my Gorgonzola salad. We were both very happy! After seeing the many positive reviews of Gus's, we were intrigued to try it for ourselves when we were in the neighborhood for lunch recently and we were totally "blown away"! An unassuming exterior leads you into a full service bar and restaurant that compares well to (and surpasses) larger and fancier eateries. The place was not crowded so the three of us were seated immediately. The staff was friendly and helpful. There were so many "favorite" items on the menu we were having a hard time deciding! Complimentary bread was served - and replenished when requested. Fresh Cole Slaw too! That's delicious on its own! Started with the clam chowder - both New England and Manhattan is available. We tried both - flavorful and thick. We opted for salads - with grilled chicken and with grilled shrimp. Again - well prepared, well seasoned and generously plated. We were full but couldn't resist a dessert. Rice pudding and a slice of Key Lime Pie hit the spot! We will definitely be back! read more

Disgusting. The lobster was uncooked. And when I complained to Audrey the manager she accused me of going there and doing "this" three times before. Yes. I've been to Gus's and I have paid for every meal. I have brought friends there and recommended Gus's to everyone. No more. Not until Audrey is gone. She is a disgrace. If you enjoy old-school dining and who doesn't when the food is tried and true then head over to Gus Franklin's on Halstead Ave in Harrison. Besides the restaurant there is an adjacent fish market with gourmet products for sale. A very long time ago my Dad who worked then owned Oscar J Abels in Mt Vernon supplied them with their fish. No one in my family has eaten there in years but after my great lunch today I'm sure that will change. Helping my Uncle celebrate a belated birthday he had the broiled salmon with broccoli rabe (very generous portions on both). I had the beer batter combo. Two jumbo shrimps perfectly dipped and fried as well as two juicy oysters and an equally moist piece of cod fish with fries. I only wish they would let you substitute a green salad for the fries. I asked and was told no. I pushed it and said even with a cost and he said no. Your options are vegetables of the day or mashed potatoes, white or brown rice. I stuck with fries. Cole slaw and big rolls came out first. They were not dinner rolls but the big round rolls you'd get as a sandwich. They were wasted on us. Cole slaw was average. The only thing I didn't like was the tarter. It was a very yellowish color and super thick. I believe it "broke" but didn't say anything. I used some of the cocktail sauce and then asked for malt vinegar and went with that. The price for lunch with one diet soda was a respectable $42. read more

This is hands down the best fish I've ever had - and I eat fish weekly from various places and cook it at home. I was pleasantly surprised because of the mixed reviews. I'm so glad I came here! I've tried so many fish places around this area and this is by far the best experience I've had. I sat at the bar. There were a few spots available. The restaurant was packed - everyone around me ordered the lobster. I love lobster as well but was craving fish. I'll definitely be back to try the lobster. Love Gus'. Been coming here since I was a kid. It's absolutely a Harrison Institution in the best possible way. The Kneurs (the family that owns it) have kept up their grandfather Gus's ideal of hospitality. And you never know who you'll bump into when you go there! Odds are at one point or another, you'll see someone from the "old neighborhood "! I can't comment on all of the food... But I have my standing order of Steamers and Gus's Salad (extra Tomato and Gorgonzola Cheese on the side). I LOVE IT. I have friends that eat other stuff and they always seem to love what they get. This place isn't fancy... but it's not pretending to be anything other than what it is- a local pub for local folks. If you're looking for fancy.. this place isn't it.. BUT - if you're looking for a genuine slice of Harrison... this is the first, and last place to go. (And btw.. Guerllemo who started out as a busboy there and is now a waiter has been there for 18 years. Talk about longevity! Have been a long time fan of Gus's .Lost track of how many times we have been there. Great Martini's with lots of comfort food that always tastes the same. It is a steady kitchen. And who doesn't love the rolls? Hit a low note this evening. Called for a reservation for a few days from now. Told, curtly, they were too busy to take a reservation and to call back after 9PM. Speed dial Trattoria Vivolo, right down the street, and that is where will be eating in a few days. Note to Gus's-you are in the service industry. It is all about the customer. If I call to give you my money I do not want to hear that you are too busy to take my money. That is how restaurants fail. You are in too competitive a market to act like that. Ladies and gents brace yourselves- it's all about the seafood here....(with some meat items). I'll admit, I was a bit nervous even coming here right in the middle of 7:15pm rush hour and hoped to nail a table. But Gus's been brewing in my mental list...so off we went. As it turned out, it was a packed house! Oh and by the way, they don't take reservations. Restaurant is small and looked like a tight squeeze- but who cares when you're in a lively place. Decked out in dark wood, full bar, photo frames against left wall and bar on your right. Waiting time was really long, which only speaks of its popularity and history of this place. But the host mentioned an outdoor patio...major win! Patio is right between the restaurant and another Gus's storefront with their Fish Market adjacent to that. No restrooms here- you'd have to walk down the alley and head back to the restaurant. Outdoor seating was nice though under their canopy with white lights and man...those overhead fans helped on a humid evening. Service was pleasant and Anastecia(?) was a doll! Started with Steamers and that melted butter, was it!!! Wished the Lobster Bisque had a lot more taste and Lobster chunks to really round out the overall flavor. This family-owned restaurant has a long wine list but no cocktail menu. My Rosé was very nice while my husband had the Sauvignon Blanc. Menu per se- isn't huge but I like the fish and shellfish variety. Standout item seems like everybody and their neighbor was going for Lobster, we kept it simple with a Broiled Seafood Mix Platter and my husband's Fried Oysters. Seafood Platter was just o......k and needed seasoning to make it pop. And my husband's Fried Oysters- tasted better out of the two. Service from everyone deserves a super high 5. Gus's granddaughter, Audrey is running things smoothly and made us feel extra comfortable. Liked her straight-to-the-point energy and a pleasure to meet. I'll be honest- my first impression was negative but I guess it gets packed for a reason. I'm even taking 'Harrison' out of the equation. The one star is because back when I was younger this was a fun spot. Dined there this week and could not have been more disappointed. There is nothing that would ever make me go back again. The New England clam chowder was a joke, three cubes of potato and I thought I noticed a clam but my wife proved me wrong. No taste and extremely watery. The fried fish sandwich was by far the worst I ever had , not even as good as McDonald's. It tasted like a soft bun with another bun inside,and nothing else., and the waiter said this was his favorite. Never tasted the fish , not crispy at all and it was asked to be cooked well done, more like a mushy mess. We did not enjoy anything we tried. With all the good restaurants in westchester it's a joke that this place is still around. Let's not talk about the prices for the basically horrible food, I don't want to scare you! Like I said it's a joke. Service was ok, even though most reviews on this site say it is horrible. Guess that was because we were one of the only two tables that lunch time. No management anywhere. When I told the waiter that the fish sandwich was pitiful he said OKAY, nothing else. That's where management should kick in and do something. All these kind of places want you to bring up any problems before you leave and not go straight to social media, "guess that system doesn't work at Gus's. Think it's time this place gives it up. This family owned restaurant goes out of its way to please. Audrey one of the owners is sure to greet you with a smile and make sure that you are comfortable. Kathleen the barista couldn't be more accommodating, she is in a first name basis with most of the patrons and is always upbeat and jovial. So next time you are looking for a cozy spot on a cold day for a great bowl of clam chowder, go and visit Gus's. They are closed between 3-4 pm and if you want a booth call for a reservation! We went to Gus's Franklin Park to celebrate Valentine's Day with my wife. It was our first time there. The reception at the front of the house was warm and friendly and we were walked to our table which had our names on it. This extra step was a nice touch in terms of recognition and it shows that the restaurant is on their toes. The pace of service was spot on as we were offered a drink quickly by a service team that exuded a strong service culture. We had a new server, James, who was being mentored/shadowed by another more senior server. This says a lot about a restaurant in that they take the time to carefully train a new employee. If James did not know a question his backup was there at the ready. BTW- the background music was a nice touch and the volume was correct. The Owner, Ernie, stopped by to welcome us to the restaurant. I asked about the Gus's and he mentioned the history and the fact that he purchased the restaurant 19 years ago after his Father (Gus, I assume) sold it to a larger company. A large portrait of Gus? hangs near the bar... I don't think I have ever written a restaurant review this long without mentioning the food. While restaurant service is in disarray in many restaurants, the team at Gus's literally put on a master class in appropriate dining service. Try going to a restaurant these days that delivers strong service- it is exceptionally rare. Now to the food: The clams on the half shell were nice with the required condiments. I enjoyed the cole slaw and roll that was served (many restaurants are forgoing bread these days). the entrees- stuffed shrimp and a seafood combo in red sauce were solid if not spectacular. The key lime pie was exceptional. Prices were fair for food, wine, dessert.... I agree with a previous reviewer that this is an old school restaurant and menu, but there is something very homey and comfortable about this place- the way that the dining room flows from the bar. There is a senior bartender (a nice show of loyalty from ownership) that served up a nice martini. I will be back again in the future to try different dishes and I hope to perhaps see some expanded culinary inventiveness on display. But if that doesn't happen I will be more than happy to return for solid F&B and stellar service. A good local staple. One of the best casual places to get Lobster in Lower Westchester. My family has been coming here for special occasions for three generations, and it still holds up. This place came recommended highly and we were excited to try it out for ourselves. (I was particularly amused by its name because I have a fat cat named Gus who loves fish. I bought a hat with the logo at the market.) Service was warm, enthusiastic, and friendly all around. Servers were very attentive and prompt and I think we even met with an owner or relative of the original Gus. The food was delicious and servings were generous which always helps when you're expecting a larger bill for seafood and market price items. Mussels Marinara used their apparently famous marinara sauce and the fried calamari was very well seasoned and crispy. Very disappointed in many ways during a recent visit.... We were told that we could not have tap water because of safety concerns(!?!?) - I did not know that our water supply was in jeopardy from Covid!! They were happy to serve us bottles of water for a charge of course (and they have a full bar- so servers were handling glasses/ice all the time!) And we were mortified to see that they were serving INDOORS- the single most dangerous thing one can do- everyone eating with masks off in an enclosed space with unknown ventilation!!! ALL the science from the countries who did contact tracing shows how even 1 infected diner can infect many others while in an indoor restaurant. Clearly the concern was NOT the safety of patrons or their staff- but the safety of their water revenue stream (pun intended!). We have other options for mediocre overpriced food- and at least other spots will serve tap water (outdoors only!) read more
