Busy on a Friday night - reservation recommended! Our party of 2 sat at the bar and ate dinner there. Chairs were not very stable, no hooks for purses to hang. An older spot that seemed to have a lot of regulars, which is always a good sign! Overall, food was great! Seafood is definitely the move. Cup of coleslaw appetizer is offered to everyone - very unique! Never seen that before. Would have loved to order another wine and dessert, but by the time we were asked our to-go order was almost ready. We were a little disappointed.

I'm updating this. Went back and experienced the same problems with the hostess and seating. Food was just okay. They forgot the wine. They did bring complimentary cold slaw and a random huge Kaiser roll over to the table. I guess it's a tradition but not really what most people are looking to eat nowadays. It's too bad, but there's no reason for us to go back.

Had a wonderful dinner at Gus's this past Saturday evening. Second time I've dined there, both times I was happy with what I ordered and happy with the quality, quantity and service. This time around I ordered the Mussels Marinara and it was outstanding ! An abundance of mussels and pasta, I think the best I've ever had. The sauce lacked a little basil and oregano, but was tasty nonetheless. The presentation was very original for this dish ! I was totally satisfied ! Had baked/stuffed clams for an app., don't bother, mostly breading.. Highly reccomended !

This place is a 3 1/2 star for now. It has a lot of potential. I have to go back soon. I Stopped in for the first time for lunch. Restaurant is very cute, with lots of nostalgic photos all over. It was a very cozy, at home feeling. I ordered a Gorgonzola salad with blackened chicken, and my friend got the fried calamari. The Fried calamari was the most tender delicious fried calamari she said she had had in the United States! It was absolutely lightly battered and perfect. My salad was very good, the chicken was very flavorful, spiced well and a perfect accompaniment to my Gorgonzola salad. We were both very happy! I can't wait to stop in again and possibly have dinner there. Waiter was extremely friendly and nice.

After seeing the many positive reviews of Gus's, we were intrigued to try it for ourselves when we were in the neighborhood for lunch recently and we were totally "blown away"! An unassuming exterior leads you into a full service bar and restaurant that compares well to (and surpasses) larger and fancier eateries. The place was not crowded so the three of us were seated immediately. The staff was friendly and helpful. There were so many "favorite" items on the menu we were having a hard time deciding! Complimentary bread was served - and replenished when requested. Fresh Cole Slaw too! That's delicious on its own! Started with the clam chowder - both New England and Manhattan is available. We tried both - flavorful and thick. We opted for salads - with grilled chicken and with grilled shrimp. Again - well prepared, well seasoned and generously plated. We were full but couldn't resist a dessert. Rice pudding and a slice of Key Lime Pie hit the spot! We will definitely be back!

Fried seafood combo, shrimps, cod fish and oysters

If you enjoy old-school dining and who doesn't when the food is tried and true then head over to Gus Franklin's on Halstead Ave in Harrison. Besides the restaurant there is an adjacent fish market with gourmet products for sale. A very long time ago my Dad who worked then owned Oscar J Abels in Mt Vernon supplied them with their fish. No one in my family has eaten there in years but after my great lunch today I'm sure that will change. Helping my Uncle celebrate a belated birthday he had the broiled salmon with broccoli rabe (very generous portions on both). I had the beer batter combo. Two jumbo shrimps perfectly dipped and fried as well as two juicy oysters and an equally moist piece of cod fish with fries. I only wish they would let you substitute a green salad for the fries. I asked and was told no. I pushed it and said even with a cost and he said no. Your options are vegetables of the day or mashed potatoes, white or brown rice. I stuck with fries. Cole slaw and big rolls came out first. They were not dinner rolls but the big round rolls you'd get as a sandwich. They were wasted on us. Cole slaw was average. The only thing I didn't like was the tarter. It was a very yellowish color and super thick. I believe it "broke" but didn't say anything. I used some of the cocktail sauce and then asked for malt vinegar and went with that. The price for lunch with one diet soda was a respectable $42.

Seafood platter was small, overcooked and dried out. Meals are overpriced. Not on my list of recommendations.

Grateful for the fantastic weather we're able to sit outside and we had a great time as well. The server was a doll, taking care of the inside and outside. The food was delicious, we all agreed that the chicken quesadilla was one of the best we've ever had. My friends had a burger and fish and chips, we shared a home made brownie à la mode. I recommend Kelly's hand down. Cheers

Its been around since the mid 70's. Not too long ago I ran a half marathon up in Rye along with a friend of mine running in her 100th half. She had a post race celebration party here which was catered and on their back patio. Nicely done, the food was tasty and the beer nice and cold. It's a true locals spot that those in the neighborhood patronize as while there I saw a bunch of them getting their day drinking on during early afternoon. It's an old school working mans bar with a bit of a worn look but in a good way.

We came on a Saturday night around 8:00pm and the restaurant was packed, with diners filling every room and even the bar area. Thankfully we had reservations and were seated right away. Parking can get tight on busy nights, so we used the valet, which made things easier. We started with a table favorite, chouriço, perfect for sharing while settling in. I ordered one of my go-to Portuguese dishes, Carne à Alentejana, tender cubes of pork loin sautéed with little neck clams, wine, and fresh cilantro. It delivered exactly what I was hoping for, savory, balanced, and deeply comforting. Others at the table enjoyed the broiled Mediterranean octopus and the Chilean sea bass with caper sauce, both well prepared. Service was attentive throughout, and they even offer to take a table photo for you. Portions are generous, the dining room is spotless, and the classic crumb-scraping after the meal is a nice old-school touch. Short of heading to Newark's Portuguese enclave, this is one of the best options in the area.

Now that we've been, I can absolutely see why. The ambiance is great. Love the decor and it generally feels like a nice place for a date night or even just a nice night out with friends. The staff is attentive and very nice. But the food. The food was amazing. We started with the Little Mezze with the grilled bread and we also got the char grilled octopus. Both were amazing. We sat and ranked each dish on the little mezze, because it was all fantastic. Complex yet clean flavors in each dish. The eggplant was just a delightful, complex, balanced dish. The grilled octopus was possibly the best octopus I have ever had. The char had a great flavor. It was perfectly tender. We next had the schnitzel and the beet salad with salmon on top. The schnitzel was so crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The salmon was so nicely cooked on top of the salad. We saved room for dessert and had the sundae and the cheesecake and they were completely different and both stupidly good and very unique. This place was overall amazing.
