I am a General Building Contractor and used Builders Energy Service in 2008 while rebuilding and…read moreadding on to an older home in Los Gatos for my family to live in. Darrel was a big help with ideas of how to make the house more energy efficient and just as important more comfortable to live in. Most of his ideas are very low cost and quite basic. For example, caulking all of the sill and top plates around the entire house when the framing was exposed, blowing in some extra insulation in the attic, using a radiant barrier on the roof decking, to reduce the heating load and cooling load, which also allowed us to purchase smaller sized, i.e. less expensive heating and cooling equipment. We did a blower door test when the house was mostly complete to find the leaks. Yes we had leaks, but they were small and fixed within the hour with additional foam, caulk or door adjustments. The cost for all this was very minimal, maybe one or two percent of the total building cost. The result was a home that was comfortable to live in and had really low utility bills, not more than $550 per year. I am using Builders Energy again for another family home I am building and I expect similar results.
