My daughter is a current patient of Dr. Sunwoo's (correction of cross bite was the initial reason we came for a consultation) and I highly recommend him and his staff! What I was first impressed with was how much time Dr. Sunwoo spent during the consultation explaining directly to my daughter what was going on, details about the treatment, and end goal. This eased a lot of my daughter's anxiety as she was able to ask him questions directly. (Typically doctors speak to parents only and the child is sitting there panicking about what they can piece together ). We have quickly seen results with the correction of her cross bite too. Not done, but it's helpful to see progress! If you're a busy household like ours, extra stars for always being on time with appointments! I am so surprised that I didn't write a review for Dr. Lee. My daughter started treatment with Dr. Lee in 2014 when she was just 9 years old. Our dentist had recommended him and my sister was his patient when she was a teenager. Dr. Lee was nothing short of wonderful. He was always pleasant to be around and greeted everyone who walked into the office. His staff was attentive and showed a lot of care during all of our appointments. I don't know if they still do raffles at the office but during the 3 years my daughter had treatment they did. She won movie tickets one time. Towards the end of my daughter's treatment Dr. Sunwoo was in the process of taking over for Dr. Lee. We had the pleasure of having him oversee the last couple of appointments my daughter had. He was very personable and kind. Dr. Lee has since retired but left the practice he started in good hands. I recommend Dr. Sunwoo to friends and family. read more

Dr. Sunwoo and his team are nothing short of amazing. Two of my kids and I all got braces and Invisalign through his office. Between the three of us, we have experienced everything that comes with the whole braces and Invisalign process. Not only is his work so precise, you can see and feel the level of commitment he has toward every patient. My son first went to this place in 2016 when he was almost 14, after two years visit and lots of X-ray, Dr. Sunwoo still didn't find my son's two upper second molars were not coming out. Only after I told him missing two teeth, then he found and told me my son needs surgery to expose the teeth and pull the teeth straight out, current situation was second molar 45 degree towards first molar and first molar blocked the way for second molar coming out. It's very clear even on first X-ray, but he just didn't notice it for two years. After surgery, not until teeth fully out and put braces on new teeth, he hurried to tell me treatment was done and going to one year retainer period, and gave my son two different kinds of retainer, upper was hawley retainer, down was clear plastic retainer. I felt strange asked why two retainers were different, he said different usage. Then in the last year for retainer checkup, when the new teeth were gradually coming out I found my son's upper and down molars were not aligned and when he eat, there was loud sound on biting, I continuously asked Dr. Sunwoo to check and he didn't acknowledge any issues. I asked his staff to show me the x-ray, and pointed out the issue to her, she said nobody will look the molars, only incisors in the front are important. What a doctor and staff in this place. After Dr. Sunwoo completely released my son from his treatment, the issue was still bothering me and I pulled my son to another orthodontist. At the first visit, when he looked my son's teeth photo, the first thing he asked was what kind of retainer previous doctor gave, I showed him, then he said that's the reason, because teeth were not completely done, previous doctor use hawley retainer, an adjustable retainer to do the treatment, hoping to fix the issue, but this didn't work for my son, and molars were not aligned and one side was too strong, that caused sound when biting. I have to do another round of treatment. One more thing, at the last visit with Dr. Sunwoo, he let me sign the paperwork for finishing the treatment and all future visits will be charged, but he didn't tell me he still put fixed retainer on my son's teeth. Before I left his office and I checked my son's teeth again, found it and let him remove all fixed retainer. He was unhappy and let me make another appointment (next time need pay). I didn't agree , he was reluctant to do it and left glue on my son's teeth. Later my dentist told me glue was not completely removed. Dr. Sunwoo not only has no skills, but also no professional ethics. read more

We love South Bay Ortho!! This place definitely has a warm "family" feel, and given the amount of time we spend here that is very important to us. The level of care and commitment is always top-notch and Dr. Sunwoo and his staff have always been so friendly, professional, and accommodating to our busy schedule. My son started his orthodontic journey about a year and a half ago, his sister followed suit soon thereafter, and at this rate probably only a matter of time before my last two kids join in on the fun!. Hmm, I read the only other review in full but I guess I just had a very different experience. Plus, I'm not exactly sure why you would get braces or orthodontics if you start out with a nice smile and beautiful teeth? Unless there was some need to correct a bite or something like that. I love Dr Lee!!! He's really awesome and I think he's got some corny but funny jokes. I started out my treatment (ortho) since I had misaligned teeth and wanted a nicer smile. I have these two teeth that are fused together as well. He let me know in the beginning of the treatment that it wouldn't be wise to pull them out because then I wouldn't have enough teeth and would make my bite awkward. But if I left them, the fused teeth wouldn't ever be straight since they were fused in an awkward position. Anyway. Then they detailed what would happen and about how long it would take. They also took before an after pictures so that I could see the progress. I don't think braces are ever pain free, but the treatment was pretty easy and the progress was seen step by step. Anyway, my treatment lasted for about 1.5 years and I'm happy to say I have a nice smile today. read more

These are, hands down, some of the best doctors I've worked with in any specialty anywhere. Not only that, their reception staff are the best I've ever dealt with in any health care profession. I was born with a severe underbite that affected my ability to eat and breathe. In 2014 I was referred to Dr Kasey Li for surgery, who sent me to Dr Paul Lee for the orthodontics portion of the correction. Since then I've been working with Dr Lee and now Dr Sungwoo in their Cupertino office (they also have a Milpitas location). Dr Lee was very encouraging while remaining realistic. I was scared and unsure about what would happen, and he helped me understand and stay calm. Because of working with him, I was confident going into surgery, and even when things didn't go 100% as we'd hoped, I was confident I'd have a good result because I trusted Dr Lee. If there is a problem, he fixes it. If I need something changed or adjusted because it's hurting, we work to find a solution that relieves my pain while still having the orthodontic benefit I need. He's also a perfectionist, which isn't always a good thing but it is in this case! I can't count the number of times he's apologized because he can't get my bite entirely perfect, because I just don't have enough bone for moving the teeth to be safe. It turned out that I needed bone and tissue grafts just to get started because otherwise I didn't have enough bone for orthodontics to be safe. He referred me to the best doctor in the country for the grafts I needed, and he's been great about working around the restrictions this placed on what he could do when. I'm thrilled with my new mouth! We still have a while to go before it's done, but I can bite things now, and I can breathe! Also, his administrator, Kathy: literally the best I've ever met in any health care related thing, ever. We've all had that doctor who is great but has the spacy receptionist, or the administration staff who double-bills you, or who puts in appointments wrong and blames you, or... the list goes on. But Kathy has been absolutely fabulous and I can't say enough good things about her. She's training some new staff, and I have faith that they'll be as good as her when she's done. Recently, Dr Lee has recently added Dr Sunwoo to the practice. I wasn't sure at first, because Dr Sunwoo is pretty young, but it's been great! Dr Sunwoo is amazing. I haven't seen him on his own very much yet, but he always looks in on my mouth and we chat about stuff every time I go in. He's very calm and collected, and like Dr Lee he's willing to change things around if they're really hurting too much for me to handle. It's been wonderful having them collaborate on my case. I speak English as my only language, and everyone in the office speaks English well---not always a guarantee here in the Bay Area. However, if you don't speak English well or at all, they have you covered. I think there's someone who can translate in-house for almost all of the major East Asian languages, as well as Spanish, and probably even more that I don't recognize. I'm pretty sure Dr Lee speaks several of them fluently (I want to say Korean and a Chinese dialect?), and his office staff speak many more. In two years of working with them, I've had to go in for unplanned adjustments all of three times. If you've ever had braces, you know what a big deal that is. They've always been willing to slide me into their schedule, and incredibly gracious even when it was my own silly fault. In short, I'm incredibly pleased with Dr Lee and his entire staff. read more

When you are trying to select a new orthodontist to continue your treatment, the steps are: (1) make a list of orthodontists you want to visit (2) schedule the consultation (3) ask for the current orthodontist to provide the pano and x-ray photos (4) go to see the orthodontists on the list (5) new orthodontists provide a draft treatment plan and a quote (6) complete new orthodontist selection (7) complete AAO transfer form to officially transfer to the new orthodontist you've selected. However, it's totally different in South Bay Orthodontics. When I arrived at the office. The receptionist asked me why I didn't bring the AAO transfer form. I said I need a consultation first before signing up the form and I haven't received the signature from my current orthodontist yet. Then she said "per the policy (tbh, I don't know what policy), we cannot give you the consultation since you don't have the AAO transfer form". Then she let me go. read more

I was one of Dr. Lee's braces patients back in 2011-2012 when I was in high school. I still remember the familiar process of going in for my regular appointments during my treatment before or after school, and how efficiently everything runs here. The doctors and staff here really care for their patients and their families! At the end of my treatment I got a pair of permanent wire retainers installed. The upper wire broke about 2 years ago, and I delayed going in to get it fixed until this past month. I was pleasantly surprised that one of the staff there still remembered me! She was very kind and the process of getting the old wire removed and a new one installed was smooth sailing with the help of Dr. Sunwoo. I highly recommend this practice; they're very professional and give some of the best advice for treatment. When my mom and I were first looking for an orthodontist, we actually almost went with a doctor who just wanted to pull several of my teeth out to make room for the crowding we wanted to fix. Dr. Lee's approach avoided all of that (zero teeth pulled!!) and the results were amazing. read more

A fixed/bonded retained was broken inside my daughter's mouth just 2 months after it was installed, but this thing was supposed to last much longer than that. When we visited the orthodontist today, the office offered 50% of the replacement cost, while I think they should be responsible for 100%. Because this retainer was a fixed one, not removable, patient played no role on the retainer's failure, indeed I doubt either the quality or the workmanship. Nonetheless, no apologize, the office claimed that nothing was wrong on their side, they hinted that the broken retainer could cause by my daughter's unusual tongue movement, and they treated a fixed retainer failure as if my daughter had lost it by accident. I probably must pay them 50% of retainer cost to get a new retainer installed, because I have already paid off the 5K Phase I cost to this office, so it is impractical to move to another orthodontist. I just have a feeling that they care more on your money than on your experience (thought about a wire sticking out of your mouth) read more

If I could rate Dr Lee 1,000 stars I would! He is the same dr lee that is in milpitas on montague expressway just so you all know.... I have grown up my whole life with a severe underbite that caused sleep apnea that effected me even as a baby. My mom would say as a baby that I could sleep through a bomb going off right near my head. My mom was a single mom and could never afford to get me braces and expanders as a child so we were told my whole child hood that I would need double jaw surgery as a result when I grew up. This cloud hung over my head all through adolescence. When I turned 24 I was tired of not waking up to an alarm and being late for work all the time...... And as a result being unhealthy and overweight..... I went to see Dr. Lee (nickname should be DR AMAZING!). From the very start he was so INFORMATIVE! He sat with me in my consultation for almost an hour exPlaining IN DEPTH what his treatment plan for me was. He estimated that my treatment would take 2 years with my surgery being halfway through. Keep in mind not only did I have an underbite at this point, but my Midline did not match, and due to my crooked teeth, they had a very very unevenly worn down. I noticed as my teeth became straighter throughout the first year they were not flat nor were they square! I was so self concious about this but dr lee assured me that everything would work out and to trust him. I have now had my surgery 4 months ago, and my teeth look AMAZING! I was going to wait to write my review until my treatment was done, but I have every confidence that my teeth will be perfect so I feel even more comfortable writing my review 8 months early! Dr. Lee is so passiOnate about his work. I can tell as he looks at my teeth that he cares about each one of my teeth and my overall appearance. He thinks ahead and has so much experience that I would have kicked myself if I had gone with any of the other orthodontists that I consulted with before dr lee. Whenever I walk into the office he greets me with a hug and looks at my teeth with a look on his face that always means business, but could also melt your heart with kindness! This is our second daughter getting treatment. The first one was with Dr Paul Lee a decade ago, the current one has Dr Sunwoo. They have 2 offices, one in Milpitas, one in Cupertino and alternate weeks between them so be sure to make appointments for your "home" office on the correct week. Our youngest just finished up today and is going on to retainers. We felt we got good value. From the doctor, to the medical staff, to the office staff, everyone is hard working, efficient and friendly. But additionally, and this is different from other medical offices I've seen, the people all seem cheerful. They try to make things fun for the kids too, by offering prizes if they sign in on time for their appointment and so on. For example, today being the last day and the brackets coming off, the office gave our daughter a "goodie bag" of treats so that she can start to make up for all the snacks she had to skip while wearing braces. My treatment lasted for two years, and it would be hard to bear with it if my orthodontist was unpleasant. Luckily I came here per family friend's recommendation. He and his staff are professional and friendly. They inform you of each step that they take to help create a more beautiful smile. I used to have an overbite, but Dr. Lee fixed that. On a couple of occasions I had swellings or infections (once) and they took immediate action to relieve me. Most of the work, except for the initial placement of braces and removal of braces, is done by his assistants, and he performs the final check. I didn't have a problem with this because the assistant that usually worked on me was knowledgeable and had gentle hands. I'm so glad that after my braces, I no longer bite myself as much as I did before braces, and that the shape of my jaw actually changed so it defines my face more. I'm happy to say that I love my smile and Dr. Lee helped me get that. It's been about three years after my treatment, and when my brother goes to his checkups, he still asks my mom how I am. Dr. Lee is AMAZING! I wish there were more than 5 stars to rate him and his staff! I have been going there since I was younger, I am now 22. My cousins both went to him for their braces and so did I. Hes done awesome work on all of our teeth. I love my perfect smile! All of the staff there always have smiles on their faces, even behind the masks you can see that they are smiling. I have never had a bad experience once, with all the many times that I and my cousins have been there. Dr. Lee is such a sweet person, he always knows how to make me smile, and he knows what hes doing when it comes to teeth. It's been 6 years since I finished my procedure at this office - I recently went back because I had a question about my retainer. It was a quick and easy appointment, and reminded me of the amazing service I had when I was younger. Dr. Lee and the staff still remembered me after all these years, which goes to show that they really do care about their patients. It's a very welcoming and friendly environment. They do a great job of listening to you and accommodating what you want while being honest about the care you need, and they make sure they are able to answer all of your questions before you leave the office while still being open for you to come back with more questions (like I did six years later). And beyond taking care of your dental/orthodontic needs, they also try to get to know you more as a person, which definitely made 3 years of braces and appointments easier to get through. Also, Kathy (the receptionist) does a great job of working around your schedule as much as she can and watching out for your appointment needs. I was treated for a severe overbite (like you couldn't see my bottom row teeth). Dr. Lee took great care of me, and fixed up my bite and smile so not only do I feel good about my smile, but also I can actually properly eat food.
