I rarely write reviews, but I hope this helps other parents. My experience here was very disappointing. I took my son for a routine orthodontic check-up. This time, they took a panoramic X-ray, but the dentist never came out to update us -- only the assistant said everything looked good. That didn't feel right. I later had another dentist review the same X-rays and found that my son has four wisdom teeth coming in -- something this orthodontist completely missed. At our next visit to replace a lost retainer, the dentist didn't even know about the wisdom teeth until I mentioned it. The financial coordinator, Rose, was rude and unprofessional. I requested a call from the dentist, but he never called back. When I followed up, he said parents must provide a reason when requesting a call -- an unacceptable response from a dentist and business owner. He also said he's so confident in his staff's training that there's nothing wrong with his practice. Unbelievable. Due to his lack of attention to detail and poor professionalism, I do not recommend this orthodontist. read more

Our two kids went to South Bay Orthodontics for specialized orthodontic work, and Dr. Sunwoo did an excellent job with both of them. He truly cares about his work and is willing to extend the treatment if necessary to achieve the best possible results for his patients. We have 4 / 5 of my family members (two kids and both my husband/me) getting ortho work done by South Bay. Within the first few months of my kids getting their expanders on, I was amazed at the progress and space that was created for their crowded mouths. Dr. Sunwoo makes my kids feel welcomed, comfortable, and always takes a lot of time to explain what is happening and answer questions. My son, who usually is very squirmy and doesn't do well with procedures, has surprisingly done well getting his braces adjusted. I get frequent confirmation appointment reminders which is helpful. I came here because I lost my retainer, my bottom retainer when I was on vacation. They are not my normal orthodontist, I did not feel like paying my current orthodontist $700 and I no longer want to give Western Dental my money. They got me in due to a cancellation, I was able to get my retainer in a few days. The lady told me it was going to be $300 and then when I picked up my retainer I had to pay an office visit fee of $175 which they did not let me know that at the time of booking the appointment. So that was kind of misleading. The Milpitas location is definitely much cleaner than the San Jose location. read more

When you are trying to select a new orthodontist to continue your treatment, the steps are: (1) make a list of orthodontists you want to visit (2) schedule the consultation (3) ask for the current orthodontist to provide the pano and x-ray photos (4) go to see the orthodontists on the list (5) new orthodontists provide a draft treatment plan and a quote (6) complete new orthodontist selection (7) complete AAO transfer form to officially transfer to the new orthodontist you've selected. However, it's totally different in South Bay Orthodontics. When I arrived at the office. The receptionist asked me why I didn't bring the AAO transfer form. I said I need a consultation first before signing up the form and I haven't received the signature from my current orthodontist yet. This review is only on the treatment coordinator Rose. I had a consultation whether I should get invisalign or braces. After taking photos, I went to a consultation room and met Rose. While she was asking me questions, she made me feel as if I am a troubled kid at a principal's office. I was very offended by what she asked and how she asked. Also, she was looking at the computer screen the whole time and gave me no single glimpse, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I felt like I was interrogated. Literally, this has been the worst experience at dentist's office. I went here, with intentions of getting a consultation for Invisalign, and I was told I wasn't a candidate. I was given details on treatment involving regular braces, with attention to every single detail with risks explained. I have an open bite, and a tongue thrust, both of which he had long term plans to address. It is a significant investment of both time and money, so I had to think it over. While doing so, I got a second opinion from a provider my work colleague used for her Invisalign. He told me right away I am a candidate, and he will do it, for less than Southbay Orthodontics would. Great, right? Well...he didn't address my tongue thrust, and dismissed it even after I brought it up. At Southbay Ortho, that was a chief concern, as it will affect the long term result. Ultimately, I did not believe that this other provider had my best interest in mind. I think he just wanted my money. At Southbay Ortho, I believe they truly had my best interest in mind, and cared about the long term result. And even though I ultimately decided not to get treatment done, I recommend them very highly. I would not recommend the second guy I went to. As for not getting my treatment, I can't stand the thought of regular braces...been there, done that when I was a lot younger. For reference, I am 35 years old. It's been two years already since I got my braces here. At first, I didn't really understand what the importance of braces was, but now I can tell that the results are definitely great. Totally not worth it. Shake down operation. Brought my daughter in for a consultation. We were first assured that our dentist sent over Xrays. When we got there, they told us they didn't have xrays but to not "worry, we'll do them for free." So they did them, and then we were brought into a room like the car salesmen do, and shown slides of kids with really extreme over and under bites. Deformities. This was to make my daughter feel insecure so she would want to have corrective tooth removal done. We passed on that, but thanks for making my 13 year old daughter feel like she had a deformed chin. Then came the price breakdown after we were told about all the stuff she would need. Close to 7000 dollars. No thanks. I felt like I was being sold an Audi by a high pressure salesmen. Something seemed off so we went in for two other consultations from other well-respected and well-reviewed doctors. Guess what?? Results and prices were not the same as South Bay. Both said her overbite was minor and that standard braces would fix it. Keep in mind that I did not mention to the other doctors the BS we were being dished at South Bay. Wanted to see how truthful they were being and wanted another independent 2nd or 3rd opinion. And 2800-3000 dollars less! I can't imagine how much the cost at South Bay would have been had we been tricked by the exaggerated before and after photos of kids with severe alignment problems and opted for tooth extraction. Here's the kicker... those scam artists charged my insurance 300 for the "free" xrays! After the visit, I was very suspicious and something told me to call Delta Dental to check. Yep, gut instinct was right. 300 dollars charged by South Bay. Nice. We were being rolled. And guess what else? They gave me false insurance coverage numbers. Said my insurance would cover more than the 1000 that I know they only cover for braces. Everything about this place screams dog and pony show. Do not be tricked by the powerpoint shows presented on ipads. It's all fake. They are shakedown artists. I am a high school teacher who has dozens of students with braces. I know what basic braces cost and know when I am being sold snake oil. My daughters teeth issues are not severe at alI. Just need a minor correction. Also know that they are not close to 7000 + dollars for basic braces with a night retainer. Con Artists. Contact me and I'll recommend two other honest offices. My daughter is Dr Lee's patient for almost 3 yrs now. There was never a time that his staff were unorganize, unprofessional or unhappy. I started going to Dr. Lee about 5 years ago to get braces. They were off in 2 years and the entire process was very easy. If I could rate Dr Lee 1,000 stars I would! He is the same dr lee that is in Cupertino or torre avenue, just so you all know.... I have grown up my whole life with a severe underbite that caused sleep apnea that effected me even as a baby. My mom would say as a baby that I could sleep through a bomb going off right near my head. My mom was a single mom and could never afford to get me braces and expanders as a child so we were told my whole child hood that I would need double jaw surgery as a result when I grew up. This cloud hung over my head all through adolescence. When I turned 24 I was tired of not waking up to an alarm and being late for work all the time...... And as a result being unhealthy and overweight..... I went to see Dr. Lee (nickname should be DR AMAZING!). From the very start he was so INFORMATIVE! He sat with me in my consultation for almost an hour exPlaining IN DEPTH what his treatment plan for me was. He estimated that my treatment would take 2 years with my surgery being halfway through. Keep in mind not only did I have an underbite at this point, but my Midline did not match, and due to my crooked teeth, they had a very very unevenly worn down. I noticed as my teeth became straighter throughout the first year they were not flat nor were they square! I was so self concious about this but dr lee assured me that everything would work out and to trust him. I have now had my surgery 4 months ago, and my teeth look AMAZING! I was going to wait to write my review until my treatment was done, but I have every confidence that my teeth will be perfect so I feel even more comfortable writing my review 8 months early! Dr. Lee is so passiOnate about his work. I can tell as he looks at my teeth that he cares about each one of my teeth and my overall appearance. He thinks ahead and has so much experience that I would have kicked myself if I had gone with any of the other orthodontists that I consulted with before dr lee. Whenever I walk into the office he greets me with a hug and looks at my teeth with a look on his face that always means business, but could also melt your heart with kindness! I swear that when I am able to eat steak again comfortably that I am taking him and the assistant that spent the most time with me (Maria, ALSO SOOOOOO AMAZING) to Alexanders for the classy dinner they deserve! My daughter has been a patient at this Orthodontist for roughly 2 years. The customer service is outstanding! The workers have great personalities, and they are patient and understanding. They take the time to explain to the guardians and patient what they accomplished in the appointment. They go the extra step, hosting raffles each month, providing a new toothbrush for patients to brush their teeth before their appointments, and printing out reminder slips used if needed to excuse students out of school. They are also very efficient in their work, calling in patients on time. In waiting rooms, they have a television, magazines, and a drink station (water, tea, and coffee). Just got my braces off yesterday and I had a really great experience with this office! The entire staff was pleasant all the time and I rarely, if any, had any issues with my teeth. Most of the time, Ellen worked on my teeth and I can say that she is very attentive to detail with my teeth which I highly appreciate. I always got a phone call or text reminding me that I have an appointment the day before which was really helpful!
