Since we had so much fun sailing in San Diego, while getting our basic keel boat certification, we decided to take the kids out sailing in the Galveston Bay. We chartered a boat with a captain and he was so knowledgable and smart and friendly and...wish we had him as our instructor in San Diego instead! Yes, that's saying a lot. Bring your basket of goodies and water. We toured the bay for two hours and it went by quickly. I know it's not the San Diego harbor so there's no sea lions to look at and we saw no dolphins but if you just want to have a fun day of sailing come here! Parking not convenient, but we were allowed to park in the shops parking lot. Overall return factor high. read more

My husband and I took class ASA 104 the weekend of November 20, we had an amazing instructor named Craig. He made learning so much fun and very interesting. Live aboard weekend- very well organized in structure and sailing maneuvers. If you haven't sailed , it's okay this school will teach you ASA101 basic keel great class if are wanting to learn how to sail, I highly suggest using SCSA . Ask if Craig is available for the weekend you choose. If you own a sailboat and have any questions about the systems, navigation , or sailing knots - rigging- or anything I haven't mentioned - Craig will give you a through understanding from dawn to midnight if needed- Craig takes pride and joy and sharing his broad spectrum of sailing knowledge , he's patient and make sure you understand the material before moving on. First of all the stars are not a hit against the instructor. Captain Chris was Great!! We went out last weekend for ASA103 and ASA104. We called twice, just a couple days prior and 1-2 weeks prior and were informed a total of 4 people would be onboard taking the class, the 3 of us and 1 female. However, upon arrival we were told 2 additional classmates (very large men) would be in the class. So including the Captain, that is a whopping 6 people in a 36 foot sailboat for 3 nights. My friend had to bunk up in the tiny V-Birth with a stranger, 2 of us in the quarter birth and 2 in the saloon. This was an uncomfortable situation. Luckily everyone was very nice. They should have told us the real situation, or at least given us a discount!! read more

Thank you Lucy, Craig and staff for a wonderful experience. My wife, daughter and I took the ASA 101 class with Craig as our instructor. Our experience was excellent. The classroom environment was comfortable and conducive to learning. Craig's teaching style was very conversational. It felt more like we were just talking and learning along the way rather than being lectured. He was very relaxed in his approach while still getting all the new information into our heads. It's hard to find a good teacher like that. The boat is a rental and it's in a training fleet. I just cannot imagine the amount of abuse the boat must take. Yet, it was in great condition. It was completely ready for our training with ZERO squawks. That tells me that they are on top of things whenever something breaks. To me, that is very important and shows me they have their priorities in the right place. The boat is a Colgate 26. It is a very forgiving boat and had no problems absorbing all our mistakes in 20 kt winds. lol. A great platform for beginners. I believe SouthCoast recently moved into a new location that is much smaller than their previous place. First impressions are key and the cramped quarters had me a little worried at first. Once we settled in, my concerns were forgotten. Later, after talking with Lucy, I learned why they had to move and I don't envy them for the hard work of down sizing. Lucy and staff run a very professional organization and we enjoyed our time with them. We look forward to returning to South Coast for our 103/104 classes. read more

Wow! What a fantastic experience all around. My friend and I decided to take the ASA 101 course (2 day including half day in-class) and lots of practicing on the water. The location of the school makes it perfect as exiting the marina, instructors can take their students to Clear Lake if it is too choppy or into the bay on better weather opportunities. The owner, Captain Lucy, as well as her fantastic staff (especially Gwen ), made our three day adventure life memorable - and more memories to come as we will be using SCSA for all our training and charter needs. We had two instructors, Captain Rita for our classroom and then Captain Paul for the water. We used well maintained and clean 27' Colgate's (same as what the Navy academies use). Since we were coming from out of town, we even elected to stayed overnight at the marina on one of Captain Lucy's ships. The marina facilities are clean and lovely while the marina exits to the hopping scene of the Kemah boardwalk. What a splendid weekend! read more

I think the only thing these people love more than sailing is sharing their knowledge and love of the sport. During 4 days with them last fall we met and worked with several of their instructors and found all of them to be highly experienced, knowledgeable, patient and most importantly fun to be with. Of course they have a great selection of well cared for boats and the best location on the bay to sail from. It's just a couple quick turns through the marina and you are out in the bay. A special shout-out to Dyna, from my very first email all the way through each and every moment of our stay (we stayed on board Morning Star) Dyna was right there, taking care of our every need. So much fun. I purchased an introductory course on Saliling through Groupon for my husband and me. We've been dreaming about sailing for a while and just never just called to take the lessons, well finally I found the motivation. We went out on a 36 foot keel boat with an instructor and 2 others people. Immediately the captain got us involved, I steered out to the bay and my husband helped the captain hoist the main sail and the jib. All of us took turns at the helm, we had great wind that day. We learned some basic techniques like tacking, it was a 3 hour class, no pressure, no tests, just fun. They put us on an email list and now we get invitations to come to Sailing Club events. We didn't join the sailing club (yet) but you can still come to more sailing events. For about $85 a person, you can go out with a captain for about 5 hrs and when you come back to shore, the staff feeds you. My husband and I went to one of these events at the end of October with some people we work with. You get to share your experiences, and learn new terminology and sailing techniques, again, that is not an official class so it still fun. You can participate as little or as much as you'd like. I am considering taking Sailing 101, just not sure when yet. This place offers to let you sleep on the boat overnight and they rent out boats to qualified sailors which I also think is pretty cool. I'd like to get to that point someday. The staff members I've met are really friendly and easy going. read more

This review is for a short 2 hours excursion. We didn't take classes. But it looks as though if I were going to, this would be the place. The boat was super clean, well maintained and the Captain allowed anyone in our group to take the helm for a while. No complaints at all with the boat or the pleasantry from the Captain. We brought lunch and had it on the boat. We did bring alcohol, in case you want to have a cocktail, it's allowed. One of my bosses at work decided to take a few of us out for a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon. Ya know, while I love all the folks that were on our boat ride, the boat was way too small to accommodate the 7 of us and the captain. If you are going to take one of these to relax and enjoy the water and the lovely ride on a sailboat, do it with a smaller group and go for more than 2 hours. It seems like we barely had enough time to get out in the water before we turned around and came back. On the way back to the marina we saw a pod of dolphins and the Captain was nice enough to do a few extra turns so we could stay with them a little while. They have no parking designated for customers that we could locate. So we parked in a paid parking lot a block behind the business location. Not really inconvenient but still something you should be aware of when you get there. You can unload your gear and then go park. read more

After my original review (which was not entirely positive), the manager of South Coast Sailing Adventures contacted me. They clearly took my feedback very seriously - which is awesome. She spent a good bit of energy explaining what happened. She tried to call, and then emailed (which is my preference anyway). She provided some reasonable rationale as to what happened, which left me somewhat happy, but then she offered me a discounted rate on the Sailing 101 class, which was probably more in line with what I wanted anyway. I took the two day weekend class - 1/2 day classroom, 1 1/2 days on the water. Was a very cool, good experience. I feel moderately confident that I can operate a sailboat of this size now (up to 26'). Had a great time on the water, Captain Mike Glass was a pleasure to meet and work with. The in-class material was good and relatively entertaining, although it would not have hurt to cut it in half. I think the materials tended to be over-covered. (and it was all in the book anyway.) Overall, I would recommend this class to a friend. (or a stranger). read more

My Wife and i took the ASA 101 course ( basic keel-boat certification) from South Coast Sailing the first weekend of October 2014. The class was small (4 students) and instructors were great, they were patient and let us repeat skills until we were comfortable with them. Additionally, South Coast Sailing gave us a follow-up ( skill builder class) for free! we just used the free skill building class, this Sunday 26-10-2014. the class was to have 3 students but one canceled so it was just my wife and i, using the free 4 hour class with instructor. This is a great way to learn to sail, get comfortable sailing, and meet like-minded sailors. We have plenty of experience sailing but hadn't sailed much on Galveston Bay, and it had been a while (too long) since we had owned our own boat. We were thinking about getting a boat but did not know whether we would actually get out sailing. This was a great way to find out. Two things in particular stand out. First, we had been a member of a different sailing charter group in the area. South Coast is a little more expensive but you get a lot more for the money. The boats are generally in very good shape and if not (stuff always happens on boats) they make it right. If you are qualified to skipper your own boat, this is a great way to get experience. Second, the organized group sails are an excellent way to make new friends, get the experience you want (whether actively driving and trimming sails, or just going along for the ride). Also, a very cost-effective way of getting out on the water. In short, South Coast is everything a sailing club / charterers should be. read more

I'm a member of South Coast and really a big fan, as well. The boats are kept in great condition, the people are all friendly and helpful, and the number and quality of weekend events is tremendous. I most recently participated in the early-March weekend sail from Kemah to Galveston for Mardi Gras. We had a fantastic time. The sailing was easy, as we had two experienced captains onboard that also happened to enjoy cooking which was an unexpected perk, as they prepared all of our meals. There were two boats in our group which both tied up at the Galveston Yacht Club. The entire group of participants was really interesting, meeting these folks is always part of the fun. We had a phenomenal dinner and loaded up on the beads (and beers and shots) at Galveston's Mardi Gras. An unbelievable price for an unbelievable event. But that's typical for SCSA. read more

SCSA helped me put together a fantastic Team Building Trip for my group at work. Not only were the boats absolutely amazing, they arranged for lunch, had our boats stocked with drinks and plenty of water, put on a regatta for the team, took pictures throughout the day from a safety boat and even set up a small awards ceremony at the end of the day. The team had a blast and I have been asked several times when the next outing was going to be. I would recommend Captain Lucy and her team to anyone who is looking to do the same. What a great way to spend your day at work! Additionally, I will definitely look into this again as night on the Kemah Bay with my family. I have been wanting to get my sailing certification for a long long time. I took the ASA-101 course this past weekend with South Coast Sailing Adventures and glad that I did. The captains were very knowledgeable and because of this I found the test very easy to pass. We hace Cpt Rick teaching our class and he was very patient and skilled. I definitely would recommend reading through the book before going, the book isn't that large but it has a lot of content. The course includes 2, 1/2 days on the water and I can say I definitely got plenty of sale time. Can't wait to take the ASA-103/104 with them. read more

I bought a Groupon to South Coast Sailing and went this past Saturday. It was a great time and I was super pleased with the instructor (Rick). This was a 3 hour intro to sailing....and for total beginners, naturally there would be a lot of information / techniques to take in....obviously more than one could learn in a 3 hour time slot. Rick gave us info in a that was easy to absorb. He threw in tid-bits about sailing terminology and techniques that was interesting and engaging. He also got us going right away with hands on tasks---which, if you are wanting to trying sailing, is the entire point! He had a very easy-to-be-around, easy-to-learn-from personality. Every interaction with a staff member that I had was smooth and friendly---from my initial call to reserve a spot to tying up the boat at the dock. Looks like there are plenty of sailing schools to choose from in the area....but I really recommend this one. read more

I don't do reviews often but every once in long while i just have to acknowledge a firm and particularly a staff member when they just deliver a level of excellence that makes you feel really smart about spending your hard earned cash. I love sailing and want my kids to have a shot to experience the freedom you get on the water with nothing but you and Mother Nature. I gave my son a refresher keelboat class for his birthday. You'd think I hung the moon. The kid was blown away. He had done the 101, 103, and 104 back when he was 15 but hadn't really had time to sail much but his 12.5 foot Catalina. I called Lucy and she suggested we match him with a Captain more his age and one who would challenge him. Captain Octavio was simply awesome. He absolutely made his sailing experience one he will forever remember. He did what few instructors know how to do "teach and motivate". It was one of those gifts a parent dreams of giving their kids - something not only they enjoy but challenges them and they can enjoy their entire life. We took the 2 day ASA 101 keelboat certification class and absolutely loved it. Our class was taught by Captain Rob and Captain Octavio. Capt Rob took 3 of us out on the bay on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. We practiced everything we learned in the classroom and the book. We will be back to charter boats and get more hands on sailing experience at SCSA! I highly recommend them for sailing lessons! A GREAT experience! As a new team building exercise, I couldn't be more impressed. This is was way better than a golf outing! Our clients were very excited about the sail and couldn't stop talking about how much fun the sail was. We were on a 4 hour sail on the Escapade and the boat was gorgeous.
