I've purchased from this location and picked up samples when needed. The front desk team has always told me I'm free to help myself to samples no need to ask since they're complimentary. Today, however, I had a disappointing experience that I feel needs to be addressed. Upon arriving, I noticed two individuals ahead of me being helped, so I proceeded as usual to the sample hallway to get two samples for a potential client. While there, Jim, the general manager, walked behind me and asked if I needed help. I let him know I was just getting some samples. He then began questioning who I was and which company I was with. He asked if we have purchased from South coast shingle before, to which I replied yes. I asked if samples were no longer free, and he told me they were only for customers who make purchases from them. I explained that we have bought from their store, in fact, Jim had previously completed a material list for us through a client who knows the owner of South Coast Shingle. While I understand that not everyone may be recognized immediately, I found Jim's questioning to be unnecessary and his tone condescending. It created an uncomfortable experience in front of everyone at the store that I've never had at your store or at any of your competitors. We have purchased from ABC, QXO, and Elite, and believe we don't owe anyone anything we just go with who has the products available. Even with south coast and they are usually always the most expensive out of all of competitors. I'd expect a general manager to be focused on supporting customers and staff rather than policing who's taking samples especially when we've had purchased from them before. I'm sharing this not to escalate the situation, but to provide honest feedback in hopes that other customers don't have a similar experience. Thank you for your time. read more

I initially came on here to tell you guys that there customer service sucks. You walk in and there are a few guys working but they won't tell you a thing. You literally have to be the one to initiate and ask them everything and when you do ask a question the rep sitting down replies all rude and condescending. 2nd, why would anyone buy here! I stopped by South Coast Shingle a few days ago to ask for help in identifying the shingles in a photo. Brandon not only helped by showing me some displays and samples they had there, but he researched addresses for me, then emailed a list to me so I could see them in person. My rating is STRICTLY for the proper customer service I received, as I didn't look around and went straight to the office. I'm looking for something that (possibly) doesn't exist and was offered assistance by a 50-something year old gentleman with glasses and a moustache. He was helpful, made suggestions of other places--he actually wanted to help. He even offered to find a phone number, but I said I could do that. This place was recommended by a stranger whom was also having difficulty finding what she needed. She spoke to Jimmy and said he was very nice and helpful. This place is in my area so I went over to see what they had for my patio addition. They have a plethora of options for natural stone and pavers. All the guys that helped me at the counter were very friendly and had suggestions on how to set it or were happy to see if they could do something within my budget. Their pricing on sand and turn around time was quicker than Home Depot and online websites I looked out which I was kind of surprised about but thoroughly appreciated. I was scheduled for a delivery the next day and realized I double booked being in two places as once. I called over and they rescheduled me for that day within the hour which was perfect. I received some nice, well priced stone and some scoops of sand. Very excited to do my project this weekend! The delivery guy was very friendly as well. If you are looking for Roofing this is the place. Tons of options on display and a very friendly staff. I'm not a roofer though so when Im in the area I have to come here sometimes for Masonry Supplies. This is where this place kinda falls off compared to other building material yards. The bulk price on sand is way overpriced compared to the competition. Even some of the other materials for masonry are priced higher. Its hard when you are in the area and need materials. Sometimes the price is so much higher I have to opt to just have it delivered from another yard farther away than haul it myself. I cant knock them too much for that because they dont specialize in Masonry. They do specialize in roofing and I can tell you that they do that better than any place ive been to before. So if you need to pick our some roofing this is the go to place. If you need masonry/building materials check out another yard. read more

Knowledgeable counter staff, generally pretty friendly, and have a very large selection, stuff you can't find at the big home centers. Even did our back yard with materials they sell several yrs ago. I called to purchase barn shingles to replace a section of garage that had to be reconstructed. I spoke specifically to a sales person named Frank. I gave Frank the "actual" length, width and thickness and specific wood type (Cedar) of the shingle. I also gave him the exposure and spacing for the area to be covered. Frank stated that he had plenty of 1/4 x 6 x 36 Cedar shingles in stock and that there were 25 shingles in each bundle. He stated I would need 38 shingles to cover the area. I ordered 2 bundles and drove over 2 hours to pick them up. I was furious that they were not the Cedar as I requested when I picked them up from the receiving area. I went back to the sales area and was told by a different rep that Cedar was only a special order. Since the shingles were going to be painted, I decided that Redwood would be fine. After, I inspected the area myself, I calculated that there needed to be between 65-90 shingles to complete the job correctly accounting for spacing and overlap into the surrounding area. My contractor picked up two more bundles and began the job. After he started the second row, he realized that the shingles were not an "actual" 6 inch width, but 5 1/2". I contacted the company for a discount to account for the misrepresentation. Jimmy, the manager, said he found it hard to believe that Frank would have told me this and would not compensate me for his error. He said that I was quoted for a "nominal" size. I told him that was not the conversation that took place between Frank and myself. I am readily familiar with actual and nominal sizes. The sales rep likely lied because he thought I would not know the difference in wood or sizes. He also could not mathematically calculate the amount needed to complete the job based on the info I gave him. This calls into question the level of education of the individuals working there. I even spoke to another rep who could not calculate the correct amount. And, when he tried to make excuses for Frank, he said I must not have told him about the spacing in between each shingle. He said that would make more shingles. I couldn't believe he said that because more spacing between shingles, would require less shingles! I would not recommend this place for any project. It's clear that they are not truthful, not well informed about product specs and calculations and like most places in this industry, just interested in the sale. read more

Buyer beware. Just a few weeks ago i took a book from this location and decided to purchase Boral roofing products. I had a small project of around 140 sq feet. It cost me around 700 dollars to purchase...a bit much of course. Went through the book and thought the Walnut color series 700 would be great. In the photos it demonstrated a mixture of light to medium sandstone color with grayish tones... Overall a good looking tile. Nothing too light and nothing too dark. Received my pallet and drove home. unloaded my pallet at home and finally got to unwrapping... And to my surprise, after unwrapping my package, every tile looks purple??? says walnut on side of package, yet nothing like the photo.No even close!!! Cedar Shingle review: Replacing our 20+ year old shingles on our house and detached garage. Currently 30% completed and just purchased 8 more bundles from South Coast Shingle Co. In the past, the bundles had the supplier information attached and were in good shape. This purchase the product was wet, not just the exterior exposed shingles, but all of them, all the way through ... soaked! We just had a long hot summer and the only rain in months was just 1/16 of an inch, completely baffled why all the shingles are waterlogged. In order to sand, primer and paint the shingles they need to be dry, so I opened all the bundles and paved my backyard with them so they could dry. As I did this I noticed nearly 1/5 of each bundle, all 8 bundles were broken down the middle or had broken sides. After they dried out I used a good exterior glue to repair the ones broken in the middle and a table saw to trim the ones with broken sides. After I am finished with this lot I estimate I will need 16 more bundles, but you can bet I will not go back to the South Coast Shingle Company. I know, I should just take them back and complain: That would require me to rent a truck, load it up and then haggle with the staff. It is easier to repair as needed and not give them any more of my money. If you are purchasing Cedar Shingles, I do not recommend this company. read more

Every time I go into South Coast Shingle, I am greeted by all of the counter guys as well as the yard workers. I have been going there now for at least 20 years, and unlike most other contractor supply companies, all of these guys have been there for years! Not only do they sell roofing materials, but they also sell brick, block, sand, gravel, rocks, flagstone, stack stone, and pretty much anything you can think of when it comes to the exterior of your home! If they don't have it, they WILL get it for you! My father used to go there and he used to bring me in when I was a kid, I remember running around that place, learning all sorts of neat stuff from the yard workers, who are mostly now inside the office! These guys KNOW there stuff, and do not hesitate to stop and lens their knowledge to the average homeowner. They have amazing samples and display areas spread all throughout their yard. I suggest that if you are looking to re-roof your home, or modify the exterior, you either give these guys a call or stop on in there. They are also open on Saturdays! Last, but not least, their pricing is right in there with their competitors. I have gotten quotes from other distributors, just for my own peace of mind, and South Coast price was better than the rest. The big box stores are always going to be higher, or are not going to carry what you are looking for. I have, and always will only shop at South Coast Shingle! You guys are the best!! I came in to order roofing materials for my garage roof. I came in with a list and a 2 year old that ran around the office while I tried to concentrate on what I needed. The office staff was super helpful and patient helping me get what I needed. I had already priced out the materials at Home Depot and found that this place was comparable. But their customer service exceeded my expectations. I ended up giving my list to a gentleman that took care of everything for me. I told him what color I wanted for the shingles and he explained the different types and I made my choice from there. While I chased my toddler around this man put in the order and arranged the delivery as well. He gave my son a flashlight to play with to keep him entertained. They have a kiddy corner with coloring books and crayons but my kid would end up coloring the walls so I couldn't leave him there without supervision. Overall I had a great experience doing something that I thought would be complicated. This place was wonderful to work with and their delivery was on time and expedient. Beware of a 10% handling charge for any returns! If we could have purchased our decking material any other place in Orange county we would have. Not knowing the amount we needed, we ask one of their sales people and gave them the measurements. We had way too much and had to return 20% of the material which added up to over $300. It was bad enough we had to drive 1/2 hour to Long Beach, we got charged a $34.27 handling fee. I would have been happy to put the 7 cans back on the shelf. There should be a big sign over the cash register (not in fine print on the back of the receipt) to make customers aware of a 10% handling fee. read more
