My son has told me he never wants to go back but that he will miss the staff and some kids he met there. When I went to visit, I could sit right by him and rub his back... I felt sad for my son but knew he was facing his consequences there. It seemed low key during visiting but i don't know how he felt when he had to go back to where he came from. Another positive I noticed was he was attending school inside the facility.

Black people are 7.2 times more likely to be cited for non-violent infractions in this city. Believe it and count on the cops coming up with more excuses than solving problems or making arrests when Black people are the victims. Non-White services have been great here however. From car repair, law offices, and food services, always having nice and friendly people that you'll make a point of seeing again and again. Nightlife leaves a lot to be desired.

Rainier!!)! The people are ridiculously nice, and having quite a few retirement communities & well regarded schools, Des Moines has a friendly & accessible social environment. Downtown Des Moines has a mix of new boutique restaurants & community owned stores. On the 4th on July there's a marina fireworks show & mid summer there's a truly charming parade, local carnival, & farmers market. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Des Moines to anyone as a great place to visit & an ever better place to live!

He was purposely moved to a less than ideal shift because they' are trying to force him to retire. That is not an assumption. He is not the only officer to be targeted. There are several lawsuits pending where officers are alleging discrimination. Deanna Nollette, gender/sex discrimination. Denise "Cookie" Bouldin, race and gender discrimination, settled for $750,000 in February 2026. Eric Greening, racial discrimination and retaliation. This was settled in 2025 for nearly $1 million. John O'Neil, racial discrimination and retaliation. Settled in August 2025. Lauren Truscott, Valerie Carson, Kame Spencer and Judinna Gulpan: four women who sued together alleging sexual harassment, gender discrimination and hostile-work-environment claims. Their case settled for $2.6 million in June 2026. I do wonder if the entire workplace is poisoned based on these lawsuits.

And due to my hilarity, I was able to make the deputy administering the breath-test to get it wrong, making it inadmissible in court. Bonus! There's a healthy amount of pornography pasted to the underside of the bottom bunk in each cell and the staff is more than happy to give you a cell on your own should one be available. Another bonus is that, unless you're a 100LB methhead, it's likely you'll be bigger and better at fighting than anyone in your block. Hooray! My only complaint is the rude 5AM wake-up time, poor game/book selection and grubby telephone that didn't really work.
