    Pork Empanada
    Jesse S.

Came in for dinner at South Front Tavern with two colleagues who between them have nearly fifty years of North Carolina under their belts. I'm the St. Louis visitor in the group, here to be educated on what Southern cooking is supposed to taste like. The verdict by the end of the night was mixed. The space itself is cute and clean, with an industrial-chic, open feel inside, but it gets very loud once it fills up, like hard to hear your side neighbor loud. We lucked into a set of club chairs in a corner away from the main dining area, which knocked the noise down enough that we could hear each other. Without that, I'm honestly not sure we would have stayed. The host didn't blink at seating us over there, and the wait staff throughout the night was friendly. Drinks were fine across the table. My grilled peach old fashioned was the only one I tried, and I was hoping for a sharper, smokier profile, what I got leaned peachy without much else going on. The clams my friend ordered had a little grit in them, so not perfectly cleaned, but the flavor was there. The six-hour baby back ribs was a great start, great sauce, not smothered, fall-off-the-bone tender, the kind of thing I'd come back for. I didn't get a photo because we tore into them too fast, which tells you most of what you need to know. After that, things got uneven. The pork empanadas are listed with an ancho chili jam, but no jam or sauce came with ours. The pastry was crisp and tasty, but the pork inside was under-seasoned, and we left a whole empanada on the plate. The crab cakes was the bigger letdown, my friend, who grew up in Maryland and knows what a crab cake should be, said hers tasted more like a flat, minced patty (possibly with fish filler) than actual crab. She didn't finish it. My gumbo ya-ya had chicken, shrimp, and andouille, but the sauce was thin and tomato-forward where I was hoping for, and a richer sauce. Spice was fine; the whole thing just landed middle-of-the-road. Desserts split the difference. The key lime crème brûlée was genuinely excellent, I'd order it again on its own. The North Carolina blueberry bread pudding was beautifully plated but a little dry in execution for use. We left half of it. One thing worth flagging: the restaurant closes at 8:30, and at 8:30 sharp, with us still finishing dessert, the music came on with the unmistakable "we're closed" energy, even though we'd arrived at 7 and no one else was wandering in late. It made the end of the meal feel rushed in a way that didn't match the otherwise warm service. 3.4 starts out of 5. To be fair: we didn't leave feeling the food was bad, just that we'd ordered into the weaker half of the menu. Our server highly recommended the skillet mac and cheese and the quesadillas, and the skillet cornbread looked great online - we just didn't pull the triggers. We have generous optimism a version of this meal that goes much better than ours did, and on a second visit I'd lean into those recommendations. For now, though, with friends in town and a list of places I haven't tried yet, I probably won't be steering people here for your one night in Wilmington. I'd come back to give it a fairer second shot if I lived here.

Came here for lunch and shared a couple of plates: Potato Leek Soup - Super flavorful yet still light Empanadas - Filling could use a bit more seasoning but overall was pretty tasty with the sauce Crab Cakes - Slightly underwhelming and didnt have much flavor

What a phenomenal restaurant from the people to the food and the atmosphere. I highly recommend EVERYTHING about this place!!

We had the most lovely Easter brunch at this fabulous restaurant. Our server, Jordan, was fabulous and made our visit extra special! It is a charming place with hints of modern architectural appointments and it was uplifting and bright! Our food was delicious and so very filling! Try the Coconut Margarita for sure! We will be back! Adorable neighborhood!

Lots of seating indoors. Plus a lovely patio.

Some friends introduced us to this restaurant. What a wonderful hidden gem in Wilmington. We actually all had the Quesadilla's, some had the shrimp others had the chicken. Very good. Service was excellent. Ambiance great.

I had the pleasure of visiting South Front Tavern during a trip to Wilmington for my graduation, and it was an exceptional experience. The food was absolutely incredible, and both the ambiance and service were top-notch. Everything exceeded my expectations from start to finish. I only wish I didn't live two hours away--otherwise, I'd be there every week!

Four of us had brunch today (6 July 2025). We had been here previously when it was a different restaurant. The bar is still there, which I really like. Open room with lots of high tops. There is outside seating too. The owner greeted us warmly and called me by name, as I made the brunch reservations. Our waitress, Jordan, was very nice and attentive. I had a delicious mimosa with pomegranate juice. There were about four other juice options. The menu had some very interesting choices. I selected the skillet, which had pulled pork, potatoes, green peppers, onions, Andouille and topped with arugula and a fried egg. It was a very nice portion; however, it was very salty, especially the potatoes. My husband had the steak and eggs, grilled Skirt Steak, fingerling potatoes, fried egg, and chimichurri sauce. Our friends had the farmer's market salad with strawberries; and the steak quesadilla. Everyone liked their food but they also mentioned being very salty. I would like to come back and try their Maryland crab cake sandwich (if there's no filler). We will have to remember to ask the chef to cut back on the salt; otherwise, this was a nice brunch.

This place has a great outdoor seating area. We loved the vibes. Came on a Sunday to celebrate a friend's birthday. Our server was great and had spot on recommendations. Everyone's food was good as well as their drinks. The crème brûlée and bread pudding are a must if you're splurging!

We were guided by other Yelpers' reviews. When booking our reservation, we opted to sit at the kitchen counter, which I recommend if possible. It's quite entertaining to watch the kitchen flow and various dishes be made. To start, we ordered the dates, croquetas, and the salad. All were delicious and light enough that we were still able to enjoy our entrees - agnolotti and the rigatoni. I hadn't read many reviews about the agnolotti but it was the star of the show. The rigatoni is their classic and doesn't disappoint. We already determined that next time, we'll need to try the beignets and possibly the lasagna! There were only 2 of us, so we had to limit our dishes. Service was incredible (attentive and friendly) and the restaurant itself is adorable. I totally understand why this is one of Wilmington's top-rated restaurants!

The service is always decent and friendly, the drinks are good not EOD quality but decent, and the Dates as always were a winner. Watching Noah work the Fire is amazing. The manager is pretty good and although I hate zone service they do it pretty good here, not Artisanal (Boone Area) good but better than most. The Restaurant since they re-worked the entrance is actually better at accommodating visitors/guests and it is cozy place to sit and eat your Dinner, We will go back as I am 3 strikes and out guy, Noah could have had some salting issues.

What a fantastic evening at Dram Yard…read more We were a little concerned we might miss our 5:30 reservation after getting delayed by a seven-car accident on the bridge, but we arrived just a couple of minutes late and it wasn't an issue at all. From the moment we arrived, the experience was relaxed, welcoming, and exactly what we needed. We chose to sit in the beautiful courtyard, and with temperatures in the 70s, sunshine overhead, and a gentle breeze, it couldn't have been a more perfect setting. The outdoor gazebo bar creates a wonderful atmosphere for enjoying a cocktail before dinner, and if the weather isn't cooperating, the indoor dining space is equally inviting. A special thank you to Sarah, whose service was outstanding. She was cheerful, attentive, and genuinely seemed happy to be there. The restaurant wasn't crowded, which made for a peaceful and unhurried dining experience. For drinks, I ordered the Ghost Town, while my wife enjoyed the Venus Flytrap. Both were beautifully prepared and easy to see why they're among the restaurant's popular cocktails. The food was equally impressive. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara, and it was exceptional. The kitchen even accommodated my request for extra freshly cracked black pepper, which took an already excellent dish to another level. My wife ordered the Little Gem Salad with shrimp, and it was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. We also shared the Tuna Tartare Tostada, which was outstanding--beautiful presentation, fresh tuna, and a great balance of textures and flavors. Adding to the experience was a bottle of Albariño that paired wonderfully with the meal. What stands out most about Dram Yard is its atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can settle in, slow down, enjoy a handcrafted cocktail, and forget about the stresses of the day. Whether you're looking for a date night, an evening with friends, or simply a quiet place to relax, Dram Yard delivers. Excellent service, creative cocktails, outstanding food, and one of the most relaxing outdoor dining spaces in Wilmington. We'll definitely be back.

This was the 3rd time we've been here. The first two times we did not make it to the table because…read moreof the service. They generally do not care about the customer at all. The star of the show is definitely the food. The chef is super proud of his food, and he should be. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 on food instead of a 5 is because there was no iced tea (in the summer in the carolinas - not really forgivable) the water was nasty and the biscuits on my Benedict were towards the burnt side on the bottom. Honestly, everything otherwise was amazing. What was really great: The restaurant itself is AMAZING! It's like being transported to a Parisian cafe. I love that when you walk in, you immediately see the fully in view kitchen. I'm assuming a chef owns the restaurant and designed the layout. The patio is quaint and delightful and surprisingly private for a downtown sidewalk restaurant. The eggs on my Eggs Benedict could not have been more perfect. I'm not a fried potato person; however, the pan fried potatoes here are mostly whole and they are out of this world. They were exceedingly crispy on the outside and completely soft on the inside. My son ordered the dutch baby. It was delicious. The accompanied fruit was perfect and truly ripe. I feel like they would have to toss a lot of fruit to get the ones that were truly that perfect. What did not work: The water - it was about 85 degrees out and humid. There is nothing here refreshing. Water is served European style meaning no ice and out of the tap. Warm tap water on a hot day in South Carolina is just nasty. It's ironic that while Europeans visiting the US for the World Cup are posting social media reels raving about ice in drinks in the United States, meanwhile The Dram Yard is insisting on pulling all of the worst parts of eating out in Europe into their restaurant. I truly dislike restaurants that serve canned and bottled beverages. It screams, "nickel and dime". If you bought your cans of soda at Costco and charged $4.00 for a can, I'd have to drink 9 cans before you're losing money. There is literally no reason to limit beverages other than driving higher profits. I hate price gouging. At the very least get a fountain and serve iced tea. SERVICE - the service staff simply makes you feel like they're doing you a favor by being open. Don't expect anything after that. When we arrived, the restaurant was at about 25% capacity with 2 food servers, who also double as the hostess. After waiting 10 minutes to be seated (yes...even at 25% capacity), service truly went downhill from there. It wasn't that the staff was rude. They were just not present and extremely slow. It honestly seemed like they were doing everything they could to not be seen. We needed salt, a refill of the water carafe and our check. That was it. The staff would come to our part of the dining room but then not even glance around or come by to see if we needed anything. I'm giving them a 2 because they were exceedingly slow and not present. When we did chase them down, I felt rude asking for help. The chef delivered our food. He was very proud and should be. However, here's the rub. The chef needs to learn that being in the restaurant business is not only about creating great food. It also requires front of house service and an overall dining experience that people are happy with. Right now, I'm walking away feeling: 1. great food and great atmosphere 2. terrible service 3. nickle and dimed me on drinks 4. doesn't have the sense to serve iced tea in the Caronlinas So - as much as I loved the food - there are too many restaurants in Wilmington that are good enough to overcome 2, 3 and 4 above. The Dram could be fixed so easily: 1. hire servers who want to be there and smile a little 2. put ice in your water 3. serve iced tea - at least in the summer months 4. get a soda fountain - it's 2026 Unfortunately, we won't be back because there are simply other options that, at the very least, hit 1, 2 and 3 with good food.
