All four of us were extremely pleased and happy with what we ordered! it was this Saturday of Memorial Day weekend so we were worried about getting in and how busy it might be in getting served! Our service was quick and efficient! We snuck in right before the rush around 5:45 PM our server Kyra was wonderful! Her timing was excellent and her suggestions were spot on! She was friendly, efficient, and just added to the great experience that all four of us had! My husband and I shared the mahi special and something called Crete Beets ( spelled on the menu beats); both were absolutely delicious! The mahi was prepared perfectly and had a nice light creole sauce which they put on the side for dipping and the crab mac & cheese was delightful with asparagus that was cooked on point; not overdone and not underdone which I know in restaurants is sometimes difficult to do. The crete "beats" was more or less a charcuterie board of roasted purple and gold beats with the most delicious whipped dip and perfectly seasoned and baked pita some of the best I've ever had with olives and cucumbers, and pickled red onions! I can't really describe the dip and apparently it's top-secret because I asked for the recipe! Our friends ordered the beet salad with extra beets; shrimp Tapatio and a bowl of the soup of the day. All were delicous and there was not a crumb or a drop left on their plates while my husband and I were still eating ours! The soup of the day was a potato jalapeño cheddar and it did not disappoint! this seriously is one of the few consistent restaurants on the island! Soul Flavor in Carolina Beach has become one of our favorite places, and tonight reminded us why. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else around--guitars on the walls, old albums, photos of singers, and that easy soul-music vibe that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile. It feels relaxed, welcoming, and full of appreciation for the music and history. Soul music belongs to everybody who loves it, whether it's classic soul, Motown, or even a little blue-eyed soul mixed in. This place feels like it's celebrating that tradition, not exploiting it. Natalie took great care of us and gave us the kind of service that makes you feel right at home. I had the chicken and noodles, which were rich, comforting, and the sort of dish that would make your grandmother nod in approval. Mimi had the Tropical Tikia Marsala with scallops, shrimp, mahi filet, mango, pineapple, coconut rice, and it was outstanding--sweet, savory, and just different enough to make you wonder why more places don't cook like this. We finished by sharing the warm toffee pecan bread pudding, and if you leave without trying it, well, that's like walking out of church before the choir sings. Every time I come to the beach, I come to soul flavor because it is that good. I've been here about five times now and I've tried different dishes each time I come. Nothing has disappointed me. They do different takes on classic dishes and everything is executed very well. I love the fact that they're Alfredo sauce is not too heavy, but still very flavorful. Eggplant on my eggplant. Parmesan was very lightly breaded and nice and crispy. The restaurant can get busy on Friday nights and the weekend so be sure to get there ahead of time. After a mediocre dining experience at a different local place, we were recommended to come to Soulflavor. The interior was very cool and decorated with famous black artists and icons and looked like a speakeasy. Very cool! Hubby ordered the fish n chips and I ordered the catch of the day, which was grilled ahi tuna with fried wild rice and shrimp. Both were delicious! There's no doubt that these fish dishes were more fresh than some other local places. 7/10 - For hubby's fish n chips, the coleslaw was too milky/too much mayonnaise. And for my grilled ahi, I wish I was able to get an additional fresh component, like green beans. read more

Soul Flavor is a long time Carolina Beach favorite of ours. We always make sure to try the specials and have not been disappointed yet. The service was surprisingly a bit on the slow side this visit. We were sitting in the back in a corner table, and I believe our server had other big parties to tend to at the time. We get the best service sitting at the spacious front bar. All of the appetizers that we have tried here have been fantastic. My daughter always likes to get the beef strogonoff. I don't think you can ever go wrong with fish tacos at the beach. My husband enjoyed the flavorful jambalaya topped with snapper. Portions sizes are great. Both my husband and my daughter had leftovers to enjoy the next day. This was a 9/10 for me. Having never been here before, when you walk in it seems a little scetchy at first because of the ambiance, decor and yellowish brown dim lighting. But don't let that fool you. We were greeted with smiles and felt welcomed. We came on a Wednesday around 5pm. We were seated immediately. Our waitress was really friendly and we had no issues ordering and getting our food in a timely manner. The food here is ridiculously good! I opted for the pork belly with pineapple shrimp fried rice. The porkbelly was cooked to perfection with the crispy edge. The shrimp in the rice were plump and all of the flavors blended together well. The chicken wings had wonderful flavor. Personal preference, I like my wings fried with a crisp, these appeared to be baked and soft, but the flavors made them good nonetheless. My husband had the cajun fried chicken with asparagus. He enjoyed it, said the asparagus was the best he had ever tasted. I washed that down with a drink called the Chai Bella...umm, umm good, Vanilla vodka,chai,ginger beer and smoke. I'm going to try to make this at home. lol If I'm ever back in the area, I'll be back and I 100% recommend this place. read more

Absolutely not. This place is stolen cultural ideas. Cultural appropriation in the most disrespectful way. From the James Brown pictures and paintings of a woman wearing her natural Afro, to sitting down and ordering deviled eggs that showed up looking like the most limp, flavorless, least filled, simple trailer park feeling eggs I've ever seen. Lifeless. A slice of olive with pimento on them and some shaken pepper? Literal pepper. That's a poor man's snack and absolutely should NOT ever be referred to as an appetizer. That alone and we were done. We left. Trying to call a place Soulflavor with literally ZERO soul and ZERO flavor--- I'm honestly appalled. This was our third visit to Soul Flavor, and it continues to be one of our favorite dining spots. We arrived early and were able to skip the wait, which is a smart move, because this place is popular for a reason. The atmosphere is a fun and funky blend of rock-n-roll meets hippie, laid-back, vibrant, and full of personality. It's the kind of place that immediately puts you in a good mood. We started with the deviled eggs appetizer, which we've had a few times before and absolutely love. They're always a hit and served with a lightly dressed spinach salad topped with pickled onions. That little side salad adds a bright, tangy contrast that makes the whole dish pop. Oh so good. For my main course, I had the special: teriyaki salmon with pineapple and rice. It was fresh, flavorful, and cooked just right. The original menu included bacon, but since each dish is made to order, I asked for it to be left off, which was no problem at all. It's always nice when a restaurant is flexible like that. The portion was generous and satisfying, so no room for dessert this time. The service, as always, was excellent. The staff is friendly, attentive, and seems to genuinely enjoy what they do. Soul Flavor delivers consistently great food, a cool atmosphere, and a team that makes you feel welcome every time. We got to this place as a group of 6 people. It was over that 50 min till we got food on our table. (Not worth to wait) I feel bad writing this review, because I heard the owner is a very good person. I wish the service became better though! Am I mean the actual service, cause to say "sorry it took so long", "I will take care of you guys" with a smile it is sweet. But to forget the order.... Hm. So I asked dressing on a side, but got my Caesar floating in that sauce. We had to ask about straws. Table was sticky, which is one of the main reasons why I am sharing this review! I was wearing really nice long sleeve dress and I felt like in a cheap random fast food greasy place. The menu looked good though. And a waiting area with a couches and a bar. I've got special, scallops with a crab cake. I wanted to substitute the scallops, but our server said they usually don't do that but I will ask for you(she was nice saying that) But! She never got back with an answer and just brought the crab cake with the scallops. I was glad in the end coz scallops were good, and the crab cake was not my favorite at all! Also, not very fresh bathroom. I get it, it was dinner time, the end of the day. However, it feels like the owner doesn't want to hire more people, as he can't deal with all at once, obviously. This place has an eclectic menu and a large board of daily specials. My husband had the burger royale, and I had the fresh fish tacos (mahi was the catch of the day). The food was incredibly fresh and delicious! I had a glass of wine, and my husband had a hard cider. We didn't try the desserts, but they looked great as they were served to other tables. Food is absolutely unreal. In my opinion most consistent quality of any restaurant on the island and always great new different specials. The one thing I will say is their lighting in the main dining room is horrible. Please get rid of the fluorescent ceiling lights. They make it feel like a cafeteria. For our entrées, we had the chicken cutlets and the fish and chips dinners, with a side of mac & cheese added to the sides that came with the meals. Everything tasted SO GOOD! Showed up Saturday night and the hostess told us an hour and fifteen min wait. Thankfully we found a place at the bar and placed drink orders. It turned out to only be 15 min but we were happy at the bar. Myself and bachelorette anniversary group of 4 girls split the friend oysters, chicken satay and paella! Oysters were a little heavier battered than thought, but we're good. The chicken satay was AMAZING! Fresh flavorful moist chicken and incredibly tasty sauce! The paella was slightly less flavorful than expected but still 8/10, would order again. Ambiance was dark with great bar lighting, wasn't too loud, super friendly lady bartender. Soulflavor was really good! We tried the crab dip for an appetizer and it was tasty! There were definitely chunks of crab in it. For my entree I got the fish and chips and it was also very good! My niece got the chicken tenders and the ranch that came on the side was SO good!! Food came up fast and the atmosphere was nice.
