fish n chips with coleslaw and fresh catch of the day special (grilled ahi tuna with wild fried rice and shrimp)
    Ashley B.

After a mediocre dining experience at a different local place, we were recommended to come to Soulflavor. The interior was very cool and decorated with famous black artists and icons and looked like a speakeasy. Very cool! Hubby ordered the fish n chips and I ordered the catch of the day, which was grilled ahi tuna with fried wild rice and shrimp. Both were delicious! There's no doubt that these fish dishes were more fresh than some other local places. 7/10 - For hubby's fish n chips, the coleslaw was too milky/too much mayonnaise. And for my grilled ahi, I wish I was able to get an additional fresh component, like green beans.

Soul Flavor is a long time Carolina Beach favorite of ours. We always make sure to try the specials and have not been disappointed yet. The service was surprisingly a bit on the slow side this visit. We were sitting in the back in a corner table, and I believe our server had other big parties to tend to at the time. We get the best service sitting at the spacious front bar. All of the appetizers that we have tried here have been fantastic. My daughter always likes to get the beef strogonoff. I don't think you can ever go wrong with fish tacos at the beach. My husband enjoyed the flavorful jambalaya topped with snapper. Portions sizes are great. Both my husband and my daughter had leftovers to enjoy the next day. We will definitely be back next year!

This was a 9/10 for me. Having never been here before, when you walk in it seems a little scetchy at first because of the ambiance, decor and yellowish brown dim lighting. But don't let that fool you. We were greeted with smiles and felt welcomed. We came on a Wednesday around 5pm. We were seated immediately. Our waitress was really friendly and we had no issues ordering and getting our food in a timely manner. The food here is ridiculously good! I opted for the pork belly with pineapple shrimp fried rice. The porkbelly was cooked to perfection with the crispy edge. The shrimp in the rice were plump and all of the flavors blended together well. The chicken wings had wonderful flavor. Personal preference, I like my wings fried with a crisp, these appeared to be baked and soft, but the flavors made them good nonetheless. My husband had the cajun fried chicken with asparagus. He enjoyed it, said the asparagus was the best he had ever tasted. I washed that down with a drink called the Chai Bella...umm, umm good, Vanilla vodka, chai, ginger beer and smoke. I'm going to try to make this at home. lol If I'm ever back in the area, I'll be back and I 100% recommend this place.

This was our third visit to Soul Flavor, and it continues to be one of our favorite dining spots. We arrived early and were able to skip the wait, which is a smart move, because this place is popular for a reason. The atmosphere is a fun and funky blend of rock-n-roll meets hippie, laid-back, vibrant, and full of personality. It's the kind of place that immediately puts you in a good mood. We started with the deviled eggs appetizer, which we've had a few times before and absolutely love. They're always a hit and served with a lightly dressed spinach salad topped with pickled onions. That little side salad adds a bright, tangy contrast that makes the whole dish pop. Oh so good. For my main course, I had the special: teriyaki salmon with pineapple and rice. It was fresh, flavorful, and cooked just right. The original menu included bacon, but since each dish is made to order, I asked for it to be left off, which was no problem at all. It's always nice when a restaurant is flexible like that. The portion was generous and satisfying, so no room for dessert this time. The service, as always, was excellent. The staff is friendly, attentive, and seems to genuinely enjoy what they do. Soul Flavor delivers consistently great food, a cool atmosphere, and a team that makes you feel welcome every time. Highly recommend!

Great find in Carolina Beach, that we wish we found sooner. They have weekly specials and the vibe is upbeat and cute. The service is top-notch and the food is absolutely delicious. We will definitely be returning often.

Daily Specials are incredible, this is Blackened Shrimp Wedge Salad.

Locals know the real deal and are gracious to share the info. Great cocktails, food was amazing and the staff is wonderful. I loved wondering around looking at the music themed artwork.

We got to this place as a group of 6 people. It was over that 50 min till we got food on our table. (Not worth to wait) I feel bad writing this review, because I heard the owner is a very good person. I wish the service became better though! Am I mean the actual service, cause to say "sorry it took so long", "I will take care of you guys" with a smile it is sweet. But to forget the order.... Hm. So I asked dressing on a side, but got my Caesar floating in that sauce. We had to ask about straws. Table was sticky, which is one of the main reasons why I am sharing this review! I was wearing really nice long sleeve dress and I felt like in a cheap random fast food greasy place. The menu looked good though. And a waiting area with a couches and a bar. I've got special, scallops with a crab cake. I wanted to substitute the scallops, but our server said they usually don't do that but I will ask for you(she was nice saying that) But! She never got back with an answer and just brought the crab cake with the scallops. I was glad in the end coz scallops were good, and the crab cake was not my favorite at all! Also, not very fresh bathroom. I get it, it was dinner time, the end of the day. However, it feels like the owner doesn't want to hire more people, as he can't deal with all at once, obviously. Grateful for that experience. Don't dress up for this place. My cousin said the fries were good! Oh, and I had a bite of ribs from my father in law. Ribs were amazing!

Was really excited about this place because I'd heard great things about it, and I was kind've disappointed. It was fine, but that was it. Average food and underwhelming vibes. Not a bad spot, but it was just decent. That's all.

First off Parking - they have their own lot. There is an overflow right next to it. But be patient. If you have to wait for a table - the waiting area is nice and comfortable. Leather couches I could fall asleep in (I didn't, but could) For an appetizer, we had fried green tomatoes. It was the best I'd ever had. My wife said the same for her. For mains, I had Cajun Grilled Mahi Fillet, the rest of family had, Snakin with Poseidon (lobster), beef stroganoff, and the tofu tacos. Chandler, our server was great. Came to check on us at the perfect times. We ate here on our first night at Carolina Beach. Later, we heard from a few others - some locals, some travels - that we needed to be sure to eat at Soulfoods. Check! Fun atmosphere and great food.

Fresh fish tacos with chips and salsa
    Ashley S.

This place has an eclectic menu and a large board of daily specials. My husband had the burger royale, and I had the fresh fish tacos (mahi was the catch of the day). The food was incredibly fresh and delicious! I had a glass of wine, and my husband had a hard cider. We didn't try the desserts, but they looked great as they were served to other tables. Our server was one of the bartenders, and she was very efficient taking care of most of the room.

When we return we likely either wouldn't order alcohol or would order a non -cocktail. For the price ($14-$15) one of my drinks was initially made incorrectly and I was given the wrong thing- and my replacement drink was truly just straight lime juice. The servers are great but they also make drinks and it seemed like to me that maybe there was too much going on for some of them. Our server seemed very overwhelmed and I watched her squeeze a bottle of coconut cream with clearly nothing in it into a cocktail shaker multiple times when most tiki style drinks contain coconut. So just a cautionary tale that the food is excellent but I wouldn't order cocktails, it's just hard to justify the prices when they are pretty subpar. We arrived around 4:30 and beat the dinner rush, which gave us a beautiful evening outside. From the moment we sat down, it felt less like going to a restaurant and more like coming home after a long day at the beach. Our servers, Abigail and Allie, were both wonderful--friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Service like that is getting harder to find these days, and they deserve a lot of credit. We started with the fried okra, and there were barely any left by the time I thought to take a picture. Crisp, hot, and some of the best we've had. The Black and Red wings were excellent too--full of flavor with just the right amount of kick. The fries were seasoned and cooked just right. The outside seating has a great atmosphere, and even the little details stood out. The place was clean, including the restroom, and seeing their 97.5 sanitation score posted proudly gave us even more confidence. They even had a Venus flytrap outside--only in Carolina Beach can a restaurant have its own bug patrol on duty. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

A great place to eat!…read more Me and my parents came here for lunch as we heard it was highly rated. Getting there was a little tricky but that was the GPS' fault. It has a nice big parking lot and we were shocked that on a Thursday afternoon, it was packed. When we walked in, we were greeted nicely and seated at a booth. The booth was nice and spacious. The table was clean, silverware was mostly clean, and there was salt, pepper, and I believe paprika shakers already on the table. One thing that impressed me heavily, is that there was a napkin dispenser already on the table. I can't tell you how frustrating it is when you have to ask for more napkins at other restaurants, and your server is nowhere to be found, or when they bring you some, but it's not enough. This is huge for a food critic like myself and this should be the standard at all restaurants. Our server was nice. She was knowledgeable about the menu and honest about what was good and what wasn't as popular. The food was good! I got the swordfish tacos with garlic mashed potatoes and a side of baked mac and cheese. The baked mac and cheese was excellent (it's quite big! You may want to make that your only side or share it with someone). The garlic mashed was good too. The swordfish tacos were good, but would've liked a little more meat in there. Still, flavor was great. My parents both got lobster rolls which they liked and my dad got the crab chowder and he said it was fantastic. Their chowder's is what they are famous for; will try that when I go back. Server was attentive, brought us refills and did an overall great job. Food is reasonable priced too and it looked like the store manager checked up on us a few times which was nice as well. Overall a great seafood restaurant to eat at. I recommend going if you are in the area; would like to go back in the future!

We were excited to try it based on the great things we had heard, but unfortunately we left with the complete opposite impression. We liked the casual grill style atmosphere that still felt family friendly. The host was prompt and welcoming, seating us almost immediately. Our server, Asya, greeted us, provided menus, and gave us time to review everything while ordering drinks and our toddler's food. Initially, things seemed promising. As someone recovering from cancer, I am mindful about what I eat and often ask questions about menu items, daily specials, and popular dishes so I can find options that aren't overly heavy or greasy. When I specifically asked about specials and recommendations, I was directed first toward the seafood boils and then several of the highest priced menu items. What was surprising was that we later discovered a daily specials menu that was never mentioned to us despite my direct questions. It felt less like guidance and more like an attempt to steer us toward the most expensive choices available. As time went on, our experience continued to decline. It took over 20 minutes just to receive our drinks, and throughout our visit our server was frequently unavailable. At one point we needed new crayons for our daughter because the ones provided were broken, and after being unable to locate our server, another employee..a gentleman with silver hair...kindly stepped in to help. Ironically, he was more attentive to our table in that brief interaction than our assigned server had been for much of the meal. The wait times became excessive. From the moment we sat down until our food arrived, nearly an hour had passed. For a mid-afternoon meal that wasn't during a rush, this was difficult to understand. Communication was minimal, there were no updates regarding delays, and we were repeatedly left wondering what was happening. What disappointed us most was that the issues weren't related to the food itself but to the overall service experience. We came in excited to support a local restaurant that had been highly recommended and instead left feeling overlooked, uninformed, and frustrated. There are too many excellent restaurants in the area that value their guests' time and provide attentive service for us to justify returning after this experience.

The Food We went straight for what matters. * Chilean Sea Bass -- cooked right, flaky, moist, and seasoned without trying to show off. That's how it's supposed to be done. No nonsense, just good fish handled properly. * Fish Bites (house specialty) -- lightly battered, crispy without being greasy, and paired with both Thai chili and tartar sauces. That combo works. You don't fix what isn't broken, and thankfully they didn't. * Ponzu Tuna Tacos -- these were the standout. Fresh, flavorful, balanced. The ponzu brings just enough bite without overpowering the tuna. If you're going there and skip these, that's on you. Sides held their own--fresh vegetables with a good sauté, and coleslaw that didn't taste like it came out of a tub somewhere in the back. Service Our server, Kali (K-A-L-I), did things the old-school way--attentive without hovering, friendly without being fake. That's getting rare these days, and it's worth mentioning. Value Two people, solid seafood, no corners cut: $67.15 total. In today's world? That's not just fair--that's impressive. Final Take New ownership can sometimes mean a place loses its identity.
