It's in Garland, Texas, a town not far from where I live. And it felt like a kids paradise from the moment I walked down the stairs into the children's area. I saw children gathered around for a special event, and they were all filled with joy and many were giggling. What a beautiful experience it was to see such happiness around books. And isn't that what being a child is supposed to be like? The walls were covered with creative nature scenes, just like you're walking into a storybook. And they carved out the sweetest little reading nooks so you could enjoy your time, privately, with a great story. There was a wonderful artistic mobile hanging over the area where you walk down to the children's area, and fun seating for storytime readings. And let's not miss out on the slide kids can go down to get to the children's area. What a fun idea! Hats off to whomever thought that one through! Every person I talked to in this library was genuinely nice. It truly felt like a safe and happy place to be - for both children and adults. I'm coming back with my grandchildren, and I already know it will be a great adventure for us all!

My daughter and granddaughter got their first library car le there, and my granddaughter immediately found wonderful books to check out. Its well designed, and I loved the books they had on the top of the displays for the children to see. My granddaughter was so excited when she saw them. The other thing I really like about this Library is... it's very engaged with the community. Over the summer, they had activities every day for the kids. That speaks volumes in my book!

This past Saturday was different though, it turned into my destination for a writing class. The writing class I attended was just one of the many great programs this library offers. They pretty much keep a full calendar of offerings to the local community. The meeting/class rooms are newly remodeled and perfect for such events. Karla, and the rest of the library staff are super helpful and just add to the pleasantness of the whole experience here!

The exterior is modern and funky with eco-friendly xeriscape landscaping and a huge (ha-yuge!) parking lot. The interior is absolutely gorgeous. It's bright, warm, friendly, and inviting, everything the old branch wasn't. They even saved part of the old YMCA building and worked it into the new design. Thrifty! I still absolutely love having the ability to set up an online queue and have a nonstop reading list at my disposal. No more driving all over Dallas, hitting whatever branch happens to have the book I want. And the only way the pickup could be easier is if someone delivered the books to my house. You go to the bookshelf that holds all the requests and grab your books, then you either check out at the front desk or...wait for it...you use one of the two self-check kiosks! I can be in and out in less than 2 minutes. (TWHS!) There are meeting rooms, quiet study rooms, and I hear there's a theater even though I haven't seen it myself. There are at least 20 computers and a ton of desks and chairs scattered throughout the entire building. There are also numerous electrical outlets if you need to plug in a laptop. The after-hours book drop was a little hard to find at first, but I finally figured out it's on the back side of the building (facing Marchant Circle). You can now drop books off without even getting out of your car. I've always been a huge supporter of libraries and I couldn't be happier with how my tax dollars were spent on this branch.

I was surprised since the library in Houston all close at 6:00PM. Library is a place where we can being indoor with the AC and a restroom to use if need to. There are plenty of parking space here and there are some steps to go up to the main door and there is a ramp near the handicap parking space. My only complain is there is not enough tree planted area here for some shaded parking space. The first floor is the kids section. and downstairs is the adult section, they have stairs and elevators. There are pretty of chairs and table. There is a puzzle table where anyone can work on the puzzle and that was where we spend our time there. The staff here are very friendly by helping me to pronounce the name of the library was named after properly.

When my boys were young, they enjoyed the Young Author workshops. They were able to make a hard covered book and illustrate it too. In fact, a few years ago the library was downsizing their homemade collection and they even got in touch with me to see if we'd like his book! How wonderful that now my son can share a book he made when he was in the 6th grade with his children! How kind that they took the time and effort to track down the original authors some 30 years later! When I was taking care of my grandchildren before they started elementary school, I would bring them to Wiggle Worms and we enjoyed many of the programs they offered. I have also enjoyed many of the Richardson Reads One Book programs over the years. It was fun to see some of the autographed posters of the authors advertising their RROB hanging in the temporary library space. At the events, I enjoyed hearing directly from the author their "behind the scenes" info about their book. All of the librarians I have ever come in contact with have always been so pleasant and helpful. On a recent trip, I was asking a librarian for a book suggestion. I had just finished reading "Theo of Golden" by Allen Levi and was looking for a book that was similar to it. It ended up being one of my all time favorite books and I was sad when I finished reading it because I loved it so much. The librarian kindly recommended three books to me and I checked out two of them on the spot. As I was leaving her desk, I discovered a seed library that was housed in an up-cycled wooden card catalog cabinet. You have to be a certain age to know what a card catalog is! Ha! So cool!!! I'm so excited that they will soon be re-locating back to the original library location at Arapaho & US 75/Central expressway. This temporary location will close October 11 and then they will start the huge task of moving everything back over to the newly remodeled space. They seem to get some adult fiction, biographies, bestsellers, but the selection is not great or consistent. The website is not user friendly (or accurate) at all. If you try to renew a book online, it actually deducts days from your original due date for some peculiar reason. When I called library staff about it, they were mostly unhelpful. The last time I went in to pick up a book, I was ignored by 2 young people just sitting around talking/laughing. I had to walk over to another staff member who was doing other work to get checked out. This used to be a MUCH better run library. Not sure what has happened, but I'll be driving over to the next city for books from now on, even though this library is several blocks away. It's a shame.
