Headline: Elitist, Predatory, and Medically Negligent--A Blatant Bait-and-Switch 1) As a healthcare professional, I am horrified by the conduct at South Hills Dental Arts. They practice a blatant bait-and-switch: their website and Yelp explicitly state they 'accept most insurance' and will file claims for you. However, once I was in the chair on my second day, the staff rescinded this and presented an astronomical $21,000 treatment plan, stating point-blank they 'don't accept any insurance.' Take note: you should receive the total bill estimate on day one, before anything is done. When I disclosed my full disability and limited funds and asked for a payment plan or sliding scale (standard in ethical practices), the staff (biller) literally scoffed. I was told they 'don't like' taking Medicaid (my plan, surprisingly, would have covered absolutely everything they wanted to do) patients because it 'doesn't reimburse enough' and they 'have bills to pay.' Their elitism is only matched by their dishonesty; they performed X-rays and impressions on the first day, then waited until I was back on day two and 'ready to start' the procedure to reveal the full, confusing bill--a direct violation of the 'Federal No Surprises Act'. Most disturbingly, their post-surgical care was nonexistent. After an extensive bone graft and infection debridement, I was left in 'uncontrolled wild pain' for three days with no sleep. I was repeatedly ignored and told to 'just take Tylenol 3, Motrin, and use ice,' which was so medically inadequate that I was forced to go to the ER to get basic pain relief. It is a sad state of healthcare when dentists are so terrified of the FDA that they refuse to follow the drug guide for acute pain, abandoning their patients to suffer. My father was a surgeon who never turned away a patient in need; this office represents the exact opposite of that medical integrity. Not only did he accept anyone, whether they could pay or not, but he also made sure pain was adequately addressed, as it's vital to healing and considered the 6th vital sign; it's so important. Do not trust them with your health or your wallet. While I take responsibility for not doing my due diligence and reading the excessively poor reviews before I went there, I trusted my case worker to do right by me and make sure the office she chose either accepted my dental insurance or at least charged reasonable prices similar to what other dentists in Pittsburgh charge, not high-end boutique-level NYC prices. To add insult to injury, I simply asked the biller to provide a clear bill in which the numbers and procedures matched the appropriate days, and she took it as a personal attack and got mean. I have never been scared of the dentist until now. I really wish I had the confidence to walk around without my front tooth rather than to bear subjecting myself to the rest of the brutal procedure and suspected lack of appropriate pain control. It is especially disturbing to. know that a peer from high school's father would run a business like this. I would be too ashamed to show my face in public. On the flip side, it made me so incredibly proud of my dad, knowing he was a surgeon who wouldn't turn anyone away, no matter whether they could pay the bill. South Hills Dental Arts represents the exact opposite of that medical integrity. Do not trust them with your health and your wallet. The multitude of bad reviews, sadly, say similar things, showing this isn't new; it's a pattern. I want to be very clear, though: Dr. Yousuf (my dentist) and all the staff except the biller and, I assume, Dr. Crandall, the owner, were phenomenal. To start with the staff is genuinely friendly and caring. The communication throughout the entire process. I have very severe anxiety and I've been activating yet dreading the implants. I thought for sure the pain was going to be unbearable. It was the least painful dental procedure Ive had. Individual extractions have caused more pain for me in the past. The staff is like family, and have been with me through the entire process ready to answer any questions and even listen to my fears. Unlike some other places I checked out, SHDA has been the most comforting, accommodating, and truly friendly staff. I couldn't recommend them more! My procedure went phenomenally. I went to South Hills Dental Arts a few years ago. I needed a new dental office and the location is so convenient and close to home. Everyone there was nice enough, and I think I actually got one or two procedures done there - cleaning and exams. However, all of my visits (and some unnecessary ones) included some type of consultation. They were aggressively selling some type of implant or device thing - something not covered by insurance with a big price tag and a payment plan. It felt like getting a timeshare pitch from medical professionals. They also are good marketers, right up against the ethical border. They were incentivizing reviews, checkins, and other social posts and content at their checkout with a cash prize drawing. read more

I wish I would have read the reviews about this place having the tactics of a "used car salesman" because there couldn't be a more accurate phrase I'd use to describe this place. Needless to say, please consider going elsewhere because they will sit across the table from you and sell you on thousands of dollars worth of unnecessary procedures. When they told me I needed a $3,000 procedure not covered by insurance, I asked if all the other patients went through with it they said yes. I said I'd seek a second opinion and they'll never see me again. I'm actually quite disappointed in the service I received at South Hills Dental Arts. I had been experiencing debilitating headaches for 8 weeks which had sent me to the ER 4 times and to 6 different specialists. A masseuse recommended I try this practice because Dr. Crandall was the leading specialist in the area for TMJ. They spent 2 hours with me taking photos of every angle of my mouth and using every gadget under the sun to gather data. In my head the whole time I was thinking that he must be making a significant amount of money on these procedures to be able to afford a 2 hour initial appointment with every patient. He then proceeded to sit me at a conference table with 3 employees and me. He gave me a PowerPoint presentation about all the reasons I need this service and how much it will cost (thousands and thousands). I was desperate for relief and he assured me this would solve my problem so I agreed. I signed the paper and went on my merry way. I got the device and wore it for a few days. In the meantime - another medical route I was experiencing panned out and the medication got rid of my headaches (thyroid issue). I called to ask about what we could do since I never used the product and I in fact didn't need it in the first place. He told me I had to return the device and still pay $800 for it because the initial appointment is so long and he has to bill for the hours they put in. Giving him 2 stars because he took $250 of my final bill. ONLY giving 2 stars because I have to pay an exorbitant amount of money for something I'm not using and don't need! If I was aware of all of this I would have never agreed to such a long and lengthy initial appointment. They need to disclose BEFORE you begin that if you proceed with your initial appointment you will owe a TON of money!!!!!!! I will be paying this off for many years in addition to the other thousands of dollars I owe from this medical nightmare. DO NOT RECOMMEND! read more

Over the last few years, my family and I had been going to a different dental office and we had nothing but problems with them. From terrible/traumatizing dental work to billing issues and them refusing reimbursement on overpayments. I finally changed our dental insurance so we could get out from the awful dentists (crooks) that accepted our insurance. Switching our insurance and coming to South Hills Dental Arts was the BEST decision I could have made. They really took time to sit with us to find out what our goals were and asked if we were having any issues. They have the most incredible staff! Going to the dentist isn't something you usually look forward to, but after years of grinding my molars down into sad, little nubs, migraine headaches, constant ringing in my ears, neck and shoulder pain, and intense jaw pain - I was pretty much beyond thrilled to see Dr. Crandall and get my head right. In all honesty, I didn't even realize that half of my symptoms were the byproduct of my dental issues. The occlusal equilibration, and the other components of my treatment, have, admittedly, required a significant time commitment, but it has been entirely worthwhile. The staff is great here, extremely friendly, and thorough. They work with your schedule and go out of their way to try and make things as affordable for you as possible. I'll finish by saying that I hadn't gotten a cleaning in some time (due, in large part, to being an extremely poor graduate student and also because - let's face it - teeth cleanings sort of suck) and after seeing the dental hygienist at SHDA, I'll never put it off again. Stains I thought would be there forever were removed; she explained everything in total detail; there wasn't a moment where I surprised or really even uncomfortable.
