We recently had a strange problem where the circuit went out to our microwave oven, several kitchen lights and one outlet in my upstairs home office. The other morning while trying to shave, I noticed a substantial drop in water pressure and temperature. I looked around my house and noticed that none of the other faucets had been turned on nor was the dishwasher on, yet I was still hearing water running somewhere. Intuition told me to check the basement. Surely, a puddle the size of a pond had formed overnight sometime after I took my pre-bedtime shower. Panic-stricken, I called the phone number printed on a sticker on the water heater, which was leaking profusely. Kay, being able to afford to miss a day of work, stayed home. Someone answered my call immediately and a South Hills Electric employee arrived shortly after I left. I came home to find a state-of-the-art, factory-fresh, forty-gallon digital water heater (complete with an expansion tank, reworked copper pipe, and a ten-year warranty) in my basement. Two perspiring, smiling men proudly flanked the shiny new appliance. Their services are quick, professional, flawless and efficient, and their prices are fair. I've dealt with South Hills Electric before (look up a previous review for a different office), and everything went as smoothly as it did then. I was having issues for the last 3-4 years with the AC unit in my rental property and had called South Hills Electric to resolve. Every summer they would come and recharge the unit ($$$), but not fix the issue. They replaced the TXV, and still the next year my unit was blowing warm air. They also performed other work on the unit that probably didn't need to be done. They quoted me $1805 to replace the evaporator coil. I thought that was high so I called another vendor who performed the work for $732. As always, get more than one estimate. This company will overcharge you if you let them. read more

I recently had a 220 line put in to our new townhouse in South Strabane township. We initially received a quote from South Hills Electric that came in over three times what the company who actually did the work quoted us. South Hills Electric quoted us $2200.00 while the other company's quote came in at $750.00. The line was to connect to a hot tub just about five feet from the actual breaker box inside the house. I don't know why anyone would want to be taken advantage of in this sort of manner. There are well qualified technicians who can do work much cheaper than South Hills Electric. I don't know if I would ever use this company for anything. Just because they use the name South Hills doesn't mean they should own it. There are so many people out there who will do just as good of a job who will want to earn your business and who won't try to rip you off just because they seem to have cool little toys and stick an iPad in your face to e-sign that you received a quote. Pittsburgh has a lot to offer, people need to understand one thing unique about our area. If you're out to take advantage of others you will be called out on it and you won't be doing business in the Mon Valley for long especially if you want to rip off your neighbors all for a quick buck. read more

I was a bit nervous to book with them due to some negative reviews on here, but they had a great deal on Angie's List for air duct cleaning. Scheduling the appointment was easy. They called before they came to do the service and were right on time. The technicians were extremely friendly and explained everything they were doing. Paid $89 for the electrician who was there less than 5 minutes and told me he would not work on my problem because my panel box had some corrosion in it. He gave me a price of $3,200 for a complete new 100 amp service. It turns out that the problem was a lose wall outlet. I got two other estimates from local electricians both were in the $1,000 to $1,500 range. So just because they are BBB rate A+ and on Angie's list doesn't mean they are the look after the customers best interest. read more

I called this place to do a furnace check prior to the winter months (yeah I'm just getting around to this review). I chose them because I didn't have to wait weeks for an appointment and the cost was pretty much on par with others I've used in the past. The technician arrived on schedule and was very courteous. He put covers over his boots without me having to ask, which I totally appreciated. Everything was fine and dandy until he found a problem and had to call his boss to quote me a price to fix it. His quote was so high and involved a used part without a warranty. I decided I would call around for some other estimates and get back to him, and I am so glad I did. I found another company which was far more reasonably priced with a new part and a warranty. I would recommend these guys for routine checkups on your furnace only. Otherwise, you will be paying inflated amounts for labor and parts. read more

A horrible company!! The technician was rude and gave me an attitude when I was misinformed by the appointment setter. And then when I reluctantly scheduled a follow up appointment to finish the work they cancelled it without telling me. And the woman at the office gave me attitude the entire conversation. She said they needed paperwork from the homeowner approving them do work there and she didn't get it. I was not informed they never received it and she was very rude the entire time. And the paperwork was obviously not that important because the technician performed work the first day without it. I said I guess you will not be doing the work then and she replied, "I guess we won't. Do not use this company. They obviously do not care about customer service or customer satisfaction! read more

DO NOT HIRE. Receptionist answered my call and quoted me $89 just to come to the house, I needed a smart light switch installed. Said if they could finish the job in 30 minutes the charge would be $89. Electrician finished the very simple job in less than 30 minutes and charged me $219!!! Electrician did not give me up front pricing and company owners were unwilling to reduce the bill at all. Rip Off! read more

I have little to no knowledge on electrical stuff around the house, so I have to rely on the experts on this. I had a breaker in my fuse box, constantly flipping off and I had enough with it. I looked on the internet and called some companies, my first 5 I called, the earliest they could come out was a week. This was kinda needed done, since my breaker was to my bathroom/washer&dryer. Called South Hills Electric, they sent a guy within an hour, so that was awesome. 90 dollar for the service call, which i though oh well, it's a breaker, should only take a few mins to fix so i though the whole thing would cost me no more than 150 bucks. I was soooooo wrong, $426. The tech was really cool and even gave me a military discount by waving the service fee. It took him less than 10 mins to change it out. He told me I could call someone else and I knew I could but I would be out 90 bucks if I did. I didn't know how bad I got screwed until today when I spoke to a couple of people and one is an electrician. All told me I was robbed blind. I knew it was over priced but they said this was down right thievery. Needless to say, I will never do business again with them but lesson learned. I'll ask next time what's the hourly rate before hand. First time I had an electrical issue in the house, so if anyone out there has an electrician they know who won't extremely over charge me, please send me a tell, that would be great.
