BEAUTIFUL trail to the water's edge, just a BIT hilly, but very manageable, and SUPER scenic. I love going to parks like this "off season," you just feel like you're the first person to have ever "discovered" it, and it's really just YOU (and in my case, my brother and S.I.L.) and NATURE at its finest.... We only had time to take the one tail to the water's edge, but even in semi-overcast, chilly late fall weather, it was slightly challenging, scenic, and DEFINITELY worth a detour, if you're in the area (and just MIGHT need to hike off a BIT of local wine and cheeeeeese!!)

It's a smaller and much quieter alternative to neighboring options, but still has everything you could want for the perfect beach day. Bathrooms? Check. Showers? Check. Food and beverage stand with a variety of options? Check. Short walk to the beach? Check. Everyone mostly behaves on this beach, which I appreciate. It's definitely not a "Hamptons party beach" (if you're looking for that vibe, Hot Dog beach would be my pick, where the surfer bros like to hang. It's worth noting that the bathrooms at Tiana don't open until the last week of June, so if you're coming here for the day before then you may have to brave the port-a-potty. Also, if you see a seal on the beach here, leave it alone or face a fine. That said, they're so fun to spot -- promise my seal photos are taken from a far distance with a zoomed in camera.

Use to vacation in Montauk but most things close after Labor Day, once we found this place would never go back to Montauk, just LOVE the quiet and proximity to restaurants. I rented a couple of Kayaks from here yesterday. The reservation was pretty easy to make, with…read moreoptions to fill out the waivers and pay for this in advance, online. We arrived 1/2 hour late, and they were able to hold our equipment and it made no difference in our reservation... 4 hours began at the time that we stepped out of their office. They have a restroom for the public in the next building over, which was kept clean and stocked. A gentleman helped us into our kayaks and sent us off. The river is beautiful, though because it's quite wide, you need to share it with yachts and boats of various sizes. This creates some waves, and they can be a pain in the ass. In general, people on the water are cool with each other, but there are some (maybe it's a Long Island thing) who feel so superior in their big beautiful boats and treat you like a pipsqueak in their way. As I was all the way to the right side of the river, while returning to the dock, a boat came up behind me. I turned around, looked at the guy driving, and he made a hand motion to say "move over to the left." I thought I was blocking his way into his dock, but he passed me by and kept going straight! Like WTF? That has nothing to do with L.I. Canoe Kayak Rentals, I'm just commenting on the experience in general. To add to the experience, there are some really nice spots with exposed sand (when it's not high tide) that you can hang out along and explore nature. There's a bird sanctuary as well... which wasn't really that impressive, but that may have just been my timing. When we returned to the dock, we pulled in our kayaks and there was no one present to help us out. A couple of ladies pulled their kayaks in, and one needed help getting out, so we provided that help ourselves. I wasn't so impressed about that aspect of this business, though I realize it's probably a lot to ask for them to have someone standing on the dock all day to receive people who are returning. It wasn't a cheap trip, but I'd likely return. I will probably check out some other places first though.
