Tried this while briefly in town, it smells heavily of Fabuloso and cannabis when you walk in. I tried to sit by the front door to have fresher air but that also made it a bit chillier. A refreshing soup option was the onion soup so I tried it and it was delicious. It was an onion broth with scallion, mushroom and tempura pieces. I also tried the spicy tuna roll, and while it's great that it came out at lightning speed, it did not look like it was freshly made. I did ask for extra ginger and the waitress really delivered, she brought a whole mini bowl extra, my favorite, I lastly tried onion tempura (great deal at less than $2). The first piece I tried was crunchy, hot, delicious. The remaining pieces were end/top of the onion and it looked like it still had dirt at the top. It turned me off to finishing the rest. Never had a great experience with this place. Haven't been in over a year and decided to give it another shot tonight. They opened up 9 minutes late--on a Friday night I might add. We walked in with other parties who had also been waiting outside the door. We get told to sit wherever by the frantic employee (owner maybe?) who was trying to get situated. Meanwhile us and the other parties just sat there in silence waiting for a server that never showed up--until 5 minutes later as we were walking out the door--also late for her shift presumably. My husband and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary. We were staying at the Central Station Hotel but wanted hibachi and sushi. This place was within walking distance. As soon as we entered, we were first greeted with smiles and instructed to sit where ever we would like. I was a little nervous because there wasn't much of a crowd for it to be a Saturday night downtown, but it was after the holiday. Not long after being seated, our waitress came right over. She was very kind and attentive. We had never visited the restaurant before, so she was full of recommendations of her favorite appetizers to start us off. We tried the dumplings! Man! Soooo good! For our entrees, we shared a hurricane roll and chicken hibachi dinner! Whew, likely the BEST hibachi and sushi I've had in the city! I've been wanting to try this place for a while! They did not disappoint. The food was really good and the service was awesome. We started with a couple of appetizers, the firecracker shrimp is definitely a must try! The spicy tuna tartar was interesting but really good! It's different for sure! We ordered some hot sake to go with our sushi. I loved the Nashville roll, it was the seared tuna on top for me. My husband ordered the steak hibachi and loved it. I had a bite of his steak and it was really good. I love the atmosphere here. You can dine in or outside. People watch and jump on the trolley after. Great downtown location. My colleagues and I grabbed lunch here the other day and we were all satisfied. I had the lunch salmon with rice and clear soup. The soup was hot and tasty. The salmon was lightly grilled with a great teriyaki glaze on it. The plate came with steamed vegetables as well. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the service was fast and friendly. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I had some free time after my hair appointment in midtown. I got there around 1030 and they didn't open until 11 so that gave me time to think about going to Blue Fin. I couldn't find any good parking so South Main it was. I was literally the first guest at 1105 so I sat anywhere. I ordered an express lunch(two sushi rolls and a salad) and a margarita. The starter was a simple salad with ginger dressing which was amazing. I had the tuna roll and a salmon roll, I usually don't like my sushi with the seaweed on the outside however this was delicious. Actually I enjoyed it so much I had to try two other rolls. I had another tuna and a crunchy shrimp roll. This place is like any typical sushi place except they don't have as much of a variety of rolls and sushi compared to other places in Memphis. Which can be good and bad. For me I like the selection and disliked that they did not have ama ebi the sweet shrimp over rice and deep fried shrimp heads that you can eat whole. On a better note that gave a great view of main and probably a great place for a first date or just coming in to get a snack with friends after work and drink for happy hour. Ordered takeout from here. The team working there was awesome, so I was really hoping I would like the order. However, the portions were small for what you pay ($9 for a fried rice that looked more like a side dish), and small rolls. The sushi wasn't spectacular, and the fish wasn't as fresh as I expect with sushi restaurants. Probably the most frustrating thing to me was that they forgot two parts of our order (dressing to go with the salad - so it was essentially just lettuce, and added vegetables in the fried rice), which left us with not enough food for dinner. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but I was unimpressed. There are better options on Main Street for takeout. read more

I went last night for a semi - private party, which was introducing the restaurant to the South Main community. The sushi was excellent, the wine selections were great, and service was superb. I sampled about eight or nine different sushi's, the tempura, and the fried rice. I have not eaten there during regular restaurant hours, but spoke with several locals who had. They raved about the service, saying that the staff was excellent and very attentive. I also had a chance to meet the owners, and they are a young couple who seem professional, dedicated, and eager to serve. I will definitely be back to eat there again. read more

The location can't be beat! Such a great addition to the south main area. Oh course the food is great too! I came here the day after it opened so there were a few glitches I'm sure come with it being a new, hot and busy place. The decor is cool and trendy and trying to keep a minimalist theme, they put the soy sauce in these tiny tiny containers. Oh course the container on our table was empty as well has 3 others I stole from nearby tables. Not a big deal, but by the time I got some soy sauce, my husband had eaten most of my sushi... So on to the important stuff, food! We ordered the shrimp gyoza starter and 2 sushi rolls. The gyoza was fresh and the dipping sauce was perfectly sweet and salty. The sushi rolls were the island roll (tempura shrimp with lettuce which was amazing and different) and the Sriracha roll (shrimp tempura with tons of spice.) Sounds like a lot, but the portions are kinda small, so we ended up ordering the steak fried rice and fried ice cream which was a smart decision because both were even better than the sushi! I am so happy that South Main Sushi is open! This is a great addition to the South Main district. We have eaten here twice and both times have been a great experience. The management and staff are friendly and provided excellent service. Recently, we walked in after a Grizz game and they were preparing to close. The manager insisted that we stay and even took our sushi order right away so that we could have a nice dinner. I was very impressed - many places would have turned us away. This place just opened up in the old Grawemeyer's location on South Main. I like to give new businesses a fair chance to get up and running before writing a review, but since I didn't even know they were open, I figured I'd go ahead and post here to help get the word out. I like the atmosphere and decor... It looks exactly the same as it did when Grawemeyer's was here, but I think it works well. It's a bit more elegant than you might expect for a restaurant featuring sushi but it's still casual enough to be comfortable and inviting. Besides sushi, the menu includes entrees of steak, chicken, seafood and noodle dishes. They also have a full bar. We popped in during South Main Trolley Night last Friday and the place was pretty busy. We decided to sit at the bar rather than wait for a table. The bartender/server suggested I try the Japanese whiskey, and so I did. It was good! I did take a very long time to get our drinks, however. I'm not a huge fan of sushi since I don't enjoy rice. I asked if they had any sushi rolls that did not contain rice (some places do), but the answer was no. I was tempted to order a steak entree, but I wasn't all that hungry so I settled on a sashimi sampler listed as an appetizer. I also ordered miso soup. My friend ordered two sushi rolls. I don't remember which ones he ordered, and I didn't try either of them, but they certainly looked good! The miso soup was okay. The sashimi was good. The service was slow and there was some confusion as to who was actually supposed to be serving us. We had to ask for napkins, soy sauce and wasabii. I'm cutting them some slack on the service this time around since they are a new business. I'll update my review after my second visit. read more

This is a place I've been excited to try since it opened! I'm not the biggest sushi fan, but every now and then I'll get a craving. We went on a Saturday night and were seated right away. The restaurant was about half full, which was nice because it wasn't too loud inside. Our server was with us right away to get our drink order. Their drink menu is interesting, they have a variety of mixed drinks and sake drinks, but we decided to go with wine. The decor in the restaurant is inviting, the walls are darker and they have Japanese art as well as modern art with painted wine bottles. I like how the atmosphere is casual, but still trendy. For dinner, we tried the island roll, the Rock & roll, & a dish of shrimp fried rice. All of their rolls are around $10, with the exception of the lobster roll. This was nice, because we felt that we could try multiple menu items without breaking the bank. Our meal was really good! I'm not a sushi expert, so I can't compare it to any other place here, this is the first sushi we've tried since moving to Memphis. I had dinner here and the service was awful. I asked the bartender if the kitchen could modify a dish on the menu and he suggested I just get something else. I asked again and he repeated his suggestion that I get something else. The food was not bad, but I got one small glass of water and that was it. The bartender never bothered to refill it the whole time I sat there eating after he bullied me into ordering a spicy dish that I made it clear I did not want. Finally, he arrogantly dropped the check for 2 people on 1 tab. When I asked for separate tabs, he just split it down the middle, which cost me about $10 more than I should've paid. He didn't bother to thank us for coming in or invite us back. It's clear we were a pain in his ass the entire time we were sitting there. First time coming here. I am a lover of sushi and I can be very picky. First let me start with the atmosphere. The design is pretty simple. Lights are kept low to add to the ambiance. I sat at the bar, which allows for ample room to enjoy a meal. The bartender was friendly and let me take my time when ordering. He kept my water glass full too. I ordered the beef sashimi, the California roll, and the spicy tuna. The sashimi was excellent. Very tender and just a little spicy. I wish I could've had more on the plate. The sushi rolls I had were typical but still good. A few of the tuna rolls fell apart but I still managed to eat everything. Overall, I enjoyed my first experience here. I plan to come again.
