An experience you just have to try! We got seated at the bar area as this is a very small restaurant. The bar stools were not the most comfy to sit on for a dinner but everything is cooked fresh right in front of you. Sadly the counters are too high to see, but as food is ready, it gets placed right in front of you. Everything was absolutely delicious! The only reason this place gets 4 and not 5 stars is because of value for money. It is extremely expensive for what you get. While the food tastes amazing, portions are extremely small. You therefore have to keep ordering more to get full, and can spend easily up to $100 on food without feeling satisfied. We had a reservation at 5:15pm, but were done before 6 and felt extremely rushed by our server. She kept filling up our water, taking away our plates quickly and we barely got to talk. So while the food is fresh and delicious and the experience something you have to try for yourself, I still give this place 4 stars because of the low value for money. read more

Maru Handroll Bar is Memphis' first hand roll bar. They serve a variety of small bites, crudos, sashimi, and sushi hand rolls. It is a two-story restaurant with a dedicated hand-roll bar on the ground floor. At the same time, the mezzanine level will offer an exclusive space for omakase service (TBD for the mezzanine opening). Parking is available in a private lot shared with other businesses. I highly recommend making reservations via phone or Resy on the weekends, as we waited about 25 minutes past our reservation time on the ground floor. Because the restaurant is fairly new, they do not have a liquor license yet, so you can bring your own alcohol (sake cups are provided). FOOD: 1. I've been here twice now and highly recommend! The 4 hand-roll combo is my favorite and it gives a nice selection of the different fish. Also tried the crudo and loved it. Atmosphere is pretty. I thought this was such a cool and interesting restaurant! I did not know that the menu served basically only hand rolls and no sushi rolls but I thought it was very fun. The whole restaurant is very vibey. Even though I went with a friend I can see it being the ultimate date night. There are no tables here, you only sit around a bar counter. They make your sushi hand rolls in front of you then place each one on the bar counter for you to take. I thought everything was delicious and tasted so fresh. The staff was extremely attentive and friendly! When we came they still did not have their liquor license but you can byob it which I think is pretty cool! Manu is an excellent addition to the Memphis food scene. The ambiance of sitting right at the bar and getting served as it is ready was so fun! We visited in the later afternoon on a weekday and were served immediately. Everything was delicious! I think we all agreed that getting the a crudo was a perfect opener and that we should have gotten the three handroll combo that they offer. The hashimi handroll was the fan favorite, followed closely by the spicy tuna. I also tried an avocado and it was delicious. The chili cucumber was a great way to start our meal. Outstanding fish. The best I have had in all of Tennessee so far. The roles are small and it takes a while to get full. You should probably pregame with a steak before you come because you don't want to try to fill up on the A5W steak, unless you're trying to impress your date with how rich you are. It's a small restaurant and it fills up quickly. They accept reservations and they are probably the only way you're going to get a seat on Friday or Saturday night without waiting. I'd give 3 1/2 stars. It's better than a 3 but for me, falls short of a 4. Spouse & I sampled 7 different hand rolls & scallop. Was good & fresh but hand rolls were skimpy & somewhat bland. Choices were limited & pretty basic-not a lot of creativity. Exception was avocado hand roll. I'd return just to eat it. Scallop small bite was good but order was 1 scallop cut into 3 thin slices. Not worth the $12 price. When looking at menu, we felt prices were reasonable but after getting our food, we feel it's overpriced. We're also hesitant to return because the stools for the sushi bar are extremely uncomfortable. Very small seat & very hard. I had to stand after 20 minutes. Was also very cold inside. I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon. Many people like it so you should try for yourself. It's a great concept & it's fairly new so maybe they'll do some tweaking. read more

I could not take pictures of the food fast enough! So all I got was a menu picture :) That was the most fresh, flavorful fish I have EVER eaten! (I seriously can't emphasize that enough.) The server was so helpful in answering all of our questions and checking in on how we were doing throughout the meal. We went right when they opened at 11 on a Sunday and it was the perfect environment. Getting to watch the chefs at work was masterful. I am already counting down the days until I come back for that SAKE CRUDOOOOOOOOO and those delicious hand rolls! read more

I did not like the A5 wavy roll. Meat was over cooked. Was not worth $28.. I also didn't like the scallop hand roll. While the fish tasted fresh the roll has mint in it. Disgusting. Wish I knew ahead if time. They should print what's on the inside on the menu. The cucumbers were good and the Sake crudo was just ok to me. I would try it again for different things. She did great though, because the staff were incredibly accommodating and kind. We also went earlier than we planned hoping it would be slower, and it was. The food was incredible. This restaurant is adorable and super clean. The service is over-the-top and the food is fabulous. Pat, the owner, prepared our rolls and we basically tried everything on the menu, some of it, twice. Incredibly fresh fish and there isn't another sushi restaurant in the city that compares to the quality and freshness. They don't serve alcohol (BYOB with no corkage which is nice). When the person with me asked if he could sub a roll as he is allergic to shellfish,she points at the bottom of the menu where it says no subs.
