Construction alert: they are still open! Access the business from the rear entrance. Go to the parking lot in the back! These guys are AWESOME. My disc brakes broke on the flight over and I thought this would be a huge expense and take lots of time to fix. I dropped my bike off and they had it fixed in a couple hours and the prices were reasonable, cheaper than they charge here in San Diego for sure! I really loved the service received and the attention to detail that the technician paid to my bike to get it back in top notch shape. Highly recommended! read more

Awesome all around! My husband and I were staying in Kihei recently, and decided to rent bikes instead of a car during our entire stay. Best decision ever! We did some research on other bike rentals in the area, and were really happy we chose to rent from South Maui Bicycles. First off, the guys here were efficient and friendly. By efficient, I mean that we were there soon after they opened, and there were several customers already there when the guys were bringing the bikes outside in front of the shop. We stayed back for a bit to let them do their thing and set up, then walked inside and waited just a few minutes until one of them was available to help us. Despite there being several other people needing assistance, the guys working that morning were on top of it! We were signed up, paid and ready to ride away on our bikes in probably less than 20 min. Big thanks to Jeffery and the other two guys working the morning of 11/11/21! Worth noting that this is an actual bike shop, as opposed to a snorkeling/beach gear rental shop that happens to also rent bikes, so they know what they're doing and actually have a better selection of rentals (not just some rusty 1-speed beach cruiser...unless that's the vibe you're going for). We needed bikes that would get us around Kihei and even down to Wailea and Makena (if you don't know, there are some pretty major hills around there!), so our hybrids (road/mountain bike) were perfect! We had our rentals for 10-11 days, and we will gladly rent from them again in the future! Side note: Helmets are optional. We initally opted in as they are included free with the bike rental, but when they handed us some pretty "tore-up" looking helmets that looked filthy and had sand all over them, we decided to opt out. If you rent a helmet, maybe wear your own baseball cap underneath it for hygienic reasons. One can never be too cautious! read more

For starters let me say I've been coming here for 5 years to rent a road bike for a week each time we vacation in Kihei. Prior to this occasion I've been super generous and even gave them love on social media with a few pictures, buying/wearing their jersey, free plugs etc. On my next trip instead of spending the normal $300-$500 I'll try a different shop. I think it probably starts with the owner or head guy who seems to carry an attitude that definitely trickles down to his employees. Nothing horrible happened but the bottom line is that they are just sort of rude, flippant, and don't seem to care about customer service or being friendly. I've literally never heard them say a simple thank you when I'm spending my hard earned money there. I'm a pretty easy to please customer so hopefully this place changes or acknowledges the need to improve their attitude. read more

We called last minute for a bike rentals, probably at the busiest time of the year, and the team got us bikes no problem. They went out of their way to be helpful and get our family outfitted for a quick ride along the coast. The shop is small but loaded with amazing bikes and big call out here- the helmets were so clean and taken care of. Huge plus in my book. Like with most high demand places and rentals in Maui, attitude is everything. If you are nice, they will be nice. If you act like a brat, well, no one will help you. Everyone has been stretched thin over the past year, I'm glad shops like this can stay open. So be nice! read more

Road Bike was 3-4 stars, old Trek Domane, Ok for $60 and up to the task for town ride - but not for riding up and down Haleakala. Front rim shimmy at speed, tires with too many miles/cuts, seat worn out, and right pedal spindle bent. I told them the morning before the ride what I was planning but that is what they gave me. Too late to back out when I picked it up. It got the job done but it was sketchy. Two employees "aloha spirit" 1 star. The comb-over guy is way burned out on tourists whom he assumes will abuse "his" rentals. Skinny dude just seemed to hate his existence in a bike shop in the middle of tourist hell, and therefore hates the existence of others who happen to be passing through his 7th ring of tourist hell. Third employee (owner?) 5 star: Welcoming, mellow, kind, knowledge, easy peasy. A pro. I would return in the future because I have a soft spot for small, local bike shops like this, but I would clarify a few days before if they would offer a little less worn bike for a ride like Haleakala. 2¢ worth: I get how old working retail and rentals gets in tourist town you guys, but be a pro with the customer or move on where you are happier and spreading less misery. read more

The bikes here range from OK to good. I should have spent the money for good. They were real quick to grab a bike, get my credit card, and get me out the door. There was virtually no safety check on the bike, and it was issued with a few mechanical problems and had to be turned around and taken back a few miles out. after that the front breaks failed the next day. They have a real laid back aloha spirit, and in general I'm all for that, but not when it comes to a piece of machinery that shares the road with autos. Would I rent a bike again next time in Maui - Absolutely!!! but probably not here, and I will be more particular about the condition of the bike next time. read more

Brought my 20 yr old GT LTS in after a crash as it was no longer shifting correctly. It's old but the bike and I have been through a lot. If it keeps rolling, I'll keep riding it. Jeffrey calls it a "Classic" which makes me feel a bit better. Had them do a full tune as it could use all the help it can get. They called me a day earlier than expected and said it was all done. Turns out the front derailer was broken in a very unnoticeable spot. Think the rear hanger may have been bent too. They tried various newer components, but the throw was not correct. Luckily, they found a similar vintage new XTR derailer in the very back of their storeroom and it was perfect. (They said it was one of the advantages of having a 30 yr old shop.) I don't recall the last time my bike has shifted (front or rear) this smoothly and precisely. All the creaking is gone and it even brakes much better too. I feel like a have a whole new bike! Money well spent and I am very happy. Big thanks to Jimmy and the other professional and very knowledgeable technicians at South Maui Bicycles for keeping my old "Classic" rolling! read more

Was super excited to rent a Cervelo S5 road bike in my size day-of! What a great road bike! It's actually on my list of splurge bikes to buy some day back home -- so it was almost like a demo ride! I was able to leave at dawn the next day, make it most of the way from Wailea up to the top of Haleakala (if only I was in a little better shape! next time!), and then back down into Kihei for a 4pm return. All for the $60 rental fee. The bike itself was several years old, had older SRAM kit on it, and the rear shifter was a bit finicky. But it was still a fast bike! Definitely recommend! read more

I had a very positive experience at Maui Bikes! I came to Hawaii for a 2 week vacation and needed to get some long rides in for my upcoming triathlon. I rented the lowest end road bike they had for $130/ week. The bike I received obviously had some wear and scratches on the frame but for $130/ week I wasn't about to complain! They obviously have some more premium bikes for rental but I opted to save a few dollars by renting a bike with a heavier aluminum frame bike. The bike rental itself comes with a care pack which includes a spare tube/ CO2 cartridge so you don't have to worry about repairs on a long bike ride as well. Water bottles are not included so I recommend bringing some cheap ones from home, if they won't fit in your luggage you can purchase a Maui Bikes water bottle for $5 at the store. The store also sells gels if you forgot to pack those (like I did) as well. The bike shop attendant was very nice and took the time to explain the best bike routes that Maui had to offer. Overall couldn't be happier with my experience! read more

Firstly, I understand things are difficult with the way the pandemic has touched every business in some way. However, the staff seemed to have no interest in helping us rent a bike. Rather, they were irritated with our presence. My wife and I arrived at 10am, when the shop opened. There were 2 customers waiting outside as well. We all entered the shop, and they began helping the 2 customers that were ahead of us in line. The staff made no effort to acknowledge us, or say "we'll be with you shortly." We stood patiently waiting while they assisted the 2 customers with their rentals and adjustments to their bikes. Multiple times, my wife and I observed one of the employees (a white haired male with glasses) complain about patrons. The customer ahead of us commented that they were having a busy morning. The employee helping her stated "oh, it's like this every morning. People always want to get here first thing in the morning and be first to rent" with an irritated tone as he shook his head in frustration. We continued to wait as he processed the transaction for the customer ahead of us. After the customer's payment was processed, she politely motioned towards my wife and I and told the employee: "if you'd like to help this couple before you get my bike, that would be fine! I'm in no hurry". The white haired employee with glasses flashed a glance at us and responded that "I'm sure they're just here to rent a bike, like everyone else here." My issue here was not with the wait, but just how irritated the employee was that there were customers to help. I understand there are busy times, and people have bad days, but you're running a bike rental shop in Maui. Interfacing with the public is an essential part of the job. It was disappointing to see. My wife and I walked out after this - they clearly didn't want my money, and I was happy to spend it elsewhere. read more

I've used their services before and had been extremely happy but never wrote about my experience prior. This time, I feel it necessary to do so. Unfortunetly, as some of us do, I completely neglected my mountain bike that is currently stored outside due to storage restrictions. I for sure thought it was going to take a great deal to fix. Not only did these guys take care of me in a very short amount of time but at a completely reasonable rate. For $60, they cleaned it and performed a full tune up with tire replacement (small additional cost for the tubes) and got it ready to get back on the road. I actually think their prices, unlike many businesses out here on Maui, are more than fair and their staff was extremely easy to deal with, professional and responsive. SMB road bike rentals are by far the best deal on the island. For $140/wk I rented an aluminum frame Trek which held up very well for several short and long trips, including the ~67 mi from Kihei around the West Maui Mountains and back to Kihei. You can get higher-end frames at other shops (Paia and Kula I believe for $160 and $180/wk) and they'll outfit you including a car rack, but if you've got all your own gear and know mostly what you're doing, SMB is great. The shop is very busy but they're flexible and staff still do a great job and offer good advice. Shawn even gave me tire-changing refresher. Third time renting bikes from this outfit. The bikes are decent but each of the three times we've used them we've come away feeling we were an inconvenience to them. 3 of the 4 guys we've been served by seem quite unhappy with their work. Don't expect a smile or anything resembling "The Aloha Spirit" if you're renting a road bike. To boot after we advised them - first by email and then in person - that my wife was in pain because they gave her a man's seat, she got a "Too bad, so sad" response at the shop and no response from mgmt to the email query. And certainly no offer to reduce the rental cost. After searching for a woman's seat one of the guys handed it to her "Here" as if to say "Happy now?" We felt we needed to be gracious in order to have them actually put it ON the bike. The experience just undermined a vibe we'd noticed at this place on each of our visits. Poor. And while generally the bikes have been good, this time one of the derailers wasn't working properly. But why go back again and be looked at sideways by the techs again? So we dealt with it. Cheer up boys. You're bikers working at a bike shop on Maui! Maybe some healthy completion in Kihei would help. read more

I couldn't get the horn to work or the front headlight. They had to be MacGyver They got my horn working probably has not worked in over 50 years they also rebuild my headlight that works. I rented a carbon Trek road bike from this place for $60/day (only one day), and I have to wonder if their tag line is supposed to be a joke. Besides the prices being a bit high in my opinion, when I called to ask a few questions about their rental process and policies, the guy who answered the phone was barely helpful. He answered my questions, but I certainly would not have called him "friendly" at all. When I went in to rent the bike there were two guys there, and the one who I'd spoken to on the phone I swear was intentionally avoiding talking to me. Or maybe he just doesn't like to talk, cause I didn't see him talking to anyone else either. The other guy ended up helping me, and he was nice, but also not very talkative or all that helpful when I asked for suggested routes. Hmm... In any case, the bike worked fine mechanically. Supposedly it was worth $1500, as that is what the "hold" amount was on my credit card, but I doubt it was worth that much. The run flat tires were helpful, as there was a lot of glass and sharp tiny rocks on the roads, but they also sent me out with a spare and a pump. The only part of the bike they adjusted to fit me was the seat height, which they did well, but after a couple miles I realized we also should have moved it forward a bit. Maybe my fault for not mentioning it at the store, but I think they should have done this for everyone. I'm glad that I rented a bike because it was great to ride while on the island, but the roads (and the drivers) on Maui are not really bike-friendly. Only some have bike lanes, and most of those are not in good shape. Next time I'm here I'll probably only rent a bike if I have someone to ride with. They do have a fun selection of Hawaii-themed jerseys, shorts and socks, which are fun to take home and brag to your bike-riding friends about. And they rent bikes of all different types, from beach cruisers to nice road bikes (they had an Orbea Onix there to rent). When it comes to bikes in South Maui, they are your only option as far as I know. read more

I rented a bike here for a couple of weeks. The staff were friendly, but the bike was less than I was expecting. For $200/week, I got a bike that would probably sell for $500--if you threw in a spare leg and sold it to an one-legged man preparing for an ass-kicking contest. I wanted a carbon frame, but actually am glad that I got an aluminum frame, since they tend to last a lot longer. A carbon frame of this vintage would have gone "dead". They did tune it up and mechanically it performed fine. They also equip their bikes with flat resistant tires, which is nice since there is a fair bit of broken glass on the roads. read more

After unpacking my personal bike after shipping from mainland, I noticed the rear derailleur was funky and not shifting correctly. I phoned up Zach at South Maui Cycles and inquired if they'd have time to take a quick look at the bike. I rolled down to the shop about 30 minutes later and introduced myself as the person who called earlier. Jeffery (in the groovy black eyeglasses) immediately stopped what he was doing and put my bike up on the stand. In less than 5 minutes he made the necessary adjustments and sorted through whatever had become funky during transit. After learning I would be in town over the weekend he invited me to join the metric century West Maui loop ride the shop is hosting this coming weekend. $35 includes fully-supported ride, commemorative event T-shirt, BBQ and beer. Sounds like a fun time and a ride I've been looking forward to doing for several years. No charge for the tune up and I was out the door in under 10 minutes. Based on this shop's location and full service shop, I can imagine it can get pretty hectic during peak season, though my experience was totally positive and I would recommend South Maui Cycles to anyone. Rented a bike for 4 days. Took the bike back to hotel and in the morning the tire was flat. Pumped it up three times on a 5 mile ride. Took it back and requested a refund and the guy said their policy is no refunds on rentals. I understand bikes get flats, but to not provide a refund because it is "company policy"? It's a small bike shop not some huge company. Change your policy and treat customers as you would want to be treated. Disappointed. read more

Friendly, helpful, attentive staff. Actually, I think there are only two guys working at the store--they're both great. I rented a Trek Navigator hybrid for a week. Biked all over Kihei, Wailea, and Makena. Hoisted my bike on to the Kihei Islander (Maui County Bus) and connected to Ma`alea Harbor, Kahului, Pa`ia, and Haiku. Hop off the bus and ride with the Trade Winds blowing at your back, or ride down hill from Makawao. Excellent off-road bike path from Pa`ia to Kahului, along makai side of the airport--just you, your bike, the sugar cane, banyon trees, the ocean to your right and Haleakala to your left. read more

For many reasons I would absolutely NOT recommend going to South Maui Bicycles. I went to get a bike for a friend: 1) The bikes are old, worn, out of tune (break pads, shifting was very loose, generally beat up) and are old models. 2) The service was abysmal. As a few other reviews have noted the guy with the black glasses (seemed to either own or manage the shop) was the absolutely terrible to deal with. Was not helpful answering any questions, acted like the 10 minutes we spent in the shop (and the $100+) ruined his day. 3) Prices are way above other shops. After my experience I went to West Maui Cycles and got a brand new 2014 Specialized Tarmac for $45/day, compared with $60/day for a ~5 year old Gary Fischer aluminum bike my friend got at South Maui. I highly recommend spending the extra 20 min to drive to Lahaina to give your business to West Maui Cycles. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and gave great advice. Most importantly the bike was far superior and the price significantly less. read more

I had a bad experience renting a road bike here, and I would not recommend them. Here is what happened... I had a week-long vacation in Maui, and I reserved a road bike about a week before I arrived. I'm an avid cyclist, and I wanted to ride up and down Haleakala. It was an important part of my trip. My bike reservation was from Monday - Thursday. However, when I arrived to pick up my bike on Monday, it wasn't there. Apparently they rented the bike to someone else, and it wouldn't be available until 5:30 PM. Hmmm...they rented the bike to two people on the same day. I went back to my hotel, waited for a while, and then returned to the store at 5:45 PM to pick up my bike. I returned the bike on Thursday morning when they opened, and politely asked about getting a refund for Monday, since the bike hadn't been available that day. However, the guy running the shop said he hadn't made any sales yet, and he couldn't give me a refund because it would make his account show a negative balance. Whoa! Seriously? He offered to give me a store credit instead. Let me get this straight: The bike wasn't available on Monday because it was rented to someone else even though I reserved it, and he still wanted to charge me for that day because his sales account wasn't positive when I returned the bike. This clearly isn't a bike shop that you want to do business with. He finally suggested that I return later in the day when his account would be positive. I came back a few hours later, and he gave me a refund for Monday. When I left the store he said something like, "I guess you got what you wanted." He sounded sarcastic, and I walked out without saying anything. So I would recommend staying away from this place. Their reservation system clearly has flaws, and when they screw up, they don't want to give refunds. One final note: None of their road bikes are geared for climbing a mountain. Most of them have 28T cassettes. This is something that you should keep in mind if you plan on climbing Haleakala. Many of the other rental shops in Maui have road bikes with 32T cassettes that are more appropriate for long mountain climbs. In summary: * They didn't have my bike ready when promised. * They still wanted to charge me for that first day. * They wouldn't give me a refund until their sales account was positive. * They charge more than most bike rental shops in Maui. * They don't have road bikes with mountain gearing. * They don't give details about the gearing online. * They have a sarcastic attitude if you ask for a refund. 3 of my buddies and I rented 4 Cervélo R3 road bikes from South Maui Bikes in March of 2018. We rented them for 5+ days and we're are all experienced riders. 3 out of 4 of us had mechanical issues on the first day. Took bikes back for what we hoped was a fine-tuning of the bikes so we could all do the rides we wanted to. One of us had an annoying sound coming from the crank.The bike had only been on the hoist for 5 seconds before the staff immediately stated and accused one of us of 'braking the frame' of the bike (?) The bike hadn't been dropped and certainly hadn't been part of a fall or crash on our watch. The insinuation that we had broken their bike continued, and the staff dropped f-bombs as well because they could no longer rent it. It was a brutal experience. We came to the conclusion that this shop was not only renting bikes out that were on their last legs, but in fact renting out bikes that were (evidently) unsafe to rent.
