The staff are extremely rude and interrogating. As soon as I parked my car someone rudely yelled at me" what are you doing here?" in a manner that was condescending. I told her I wanted to adopt, and she pointed me the front door that was locked to the public with a sign that said to check in at the window. The window was closed. I had to pace in front of the window until a second person opened the window and rudely shouted said "You need an appointment to see the animals! " before even asking me why I was here. I told her this place is extremely not welcoming, and I am finished with my business here. What a horrible way to meet you your new animal family for anyone looking! Staff is rude and Uncaring, I think her name was Kathy or something like that. I brought in a stray dog and I had kept it at my house giving it all the proper treatments it needed. I let the staff know I would be bringing him in on a certain day due their short hours of being open. They called me back saying they would report the dog as stolen to the police if I did not bring him in. I let them know what day/time I would be there around. When I brought this poor pup in the lady named Kathy I'm pretty sure ripped the dog leash out of my hands so hard it left a burn mark. She told me I had no right helping this dog and what I did was wrong. It took everything in my soul not to knöçk this lady out. She dragged the dog unwilling by the neck into their shelter. When I asked for my dog leash back they slammed the window shut and gave me no mind. This place should be ran by professionals who know what they're doing. Not by volunteers that give zero shts about those animals and people. I will find out what that lady's name is and I want my dog leash back lol. Dog I brought in had bad dental health, infested with fleas and bad Mange. Obviously whoever's dog this was they didn't take care of him and the shelter could care less. read more

I'm surprised to see such negative reviews about a one-of-a-kind animal shelter that is all-volunteer. The staff is the volunteer staff they have, not a staff of employees! That usually means overworked volunteers, not people who are "number one in customer service." When I worked at an all-volunteer shelter further up the coast we would exchange animals of theirs for ours so their trainer(s) could help poorly-socialized dogs have a chance (not just pits but other breeds as well). That IS one of a kind. Back then I was immediately amazed when entering the shelter: isolation rooms for ill cats at the front, a jungle room (huge) for cats who get along to share their space, socialize and not spend however much time THEY needed outside of a cage; the kennels for the dogs were immaculate. There was an separate quarantine or intake room with its own cages in a convenient spot. We hoped to one day make our own shelter that way. Two years ago, our previous three big shelter kitties/siblings having passed, we were driving back home from Oregon and felt a deep need for starting again. I had never adopted from South Pacific County Humane before but I knew we needed to try out a kitty for a change, in-person. Well, that kitty is our consolation every day, a best friend, an extra limb. He walked right up to us, reached up to my thigh to stretch himself, and within moments we were cuddling in one of the side chairs in the room...and none of that has changed. We got a very good sense of his health, playfulness and ability to get along with others. He was also: healthy as a horse, neutered and healed, health-checked, vaccinated and chipped. Chipping is not always done at every animal shelter and tends to cost far more than they'll make on an adoption, by the way. Chipping another shelter cat of ours from a more local shelter cost us $90 plus tax...so don't knock what this special shelter has managed to offer. I can't imagine the fundraising and effort they must go to. Remember too that this is a no-kill shelter. No matter where you live, consider volunteering and donating. The older volunteers may not be safe to work right now and are risking themselves if they do, even with vaccinations and masks. Not everybody can volunteer and not everybody can be vaccinated at that. Fundraisers everywhere are in a big slump, of course. We are a gay couple from Portland, Oregon, who have had cats for 32 years. Our beloved cat died at the start of the month after 13 years. My husband has been coming to the family beach house here since the mid 40s. We were very interested in adopting a male cat we met at the shelter but it had a skin condition that worried us. The shelter did not know what it was but told us the cream they'd been using hadn't been effective. He had a number of irregularly space pure black spots on his nose that did not look like a normal variation of pigment colors. Was it cancer? Also, the shelter did not have recent blood work results for the cat. Even though the cat was young, we wanted to know what the blood work said about his health. We have looked into this at other shelters in the past and have never encountered resistance. We proposed that they take the cat to the vet for a diagnosis of the skin condition and to do the usual panel of blood tests and we would pay for them. They seemed unenthused about the blood test. We left with the understanding they'd take the cat to the vet and keep us updated. This was on a Thursday. When we hadn't heard anything from the shelter by Tuesday, we left a follow-up message that included the offer to take the cat to the vet ourselves. Now it's Friday and we have not heard a thing from the shelter about the cat we wanted to adopt. At a minimum this is very poor customer service. If they did not want the cat to be seen by the vet, they should have said so. However, I would think they would want to know about the nature of the skin problem on the cat's nose. The shelter's failure to follow up with us is inexplicable. read more

All the animals were very cute and friendly but I can't say the same about the staff. They were EXTREMELY rude and rushed us out as soon as we walked in because they "closed in 5 min" but it was technically 15. We got to look at one cat and when we turned around we were asked to leave. You would think working at an animal shelter you would be 10x nicer. I feel so bad for those sweet animals. read more

The Humane Society is a favorite haunt when we're down at the beach and missing our pets back home. Clean facility Friendly and knowledgeable staff Happy, well socialized animals 2 petting rooms where multiple cats roam and play Stop in and make a donation to keeping this great facility running. While you're there you may just find a new friend. read more

I love this shelter. I adopted a very special cat from here and someday I hope to adopt another. I do worry though about whether they have a plan to get the animals to safety in the case of tsunami since they are right in the inundation zone. Their hours are really limited so it could be a very bad situation for these animals. read more

Please look elsewhere for your forever companion. I feel bad for the dogs that this group takes care of. I tried to adopt a special needs puppy from this group in spring 2021 after my Dad passed away. Puppy Cleo was lovely, my geriatric rescue dog Alfie loved her, and I make 6 figures and so I even put up thousands of $$$ for her cleft palate surgery and recovery anonymously. I was told that because "Sara" (whoever the f*** that is) at SPCHS didn't like me and my Mom, the puppy was given to someone else who ended up returning her because they couldn't afford her medical bills. This place is skeezy at best, out for money only, and obviously their people aren't so smart about long term wise choices for their dogs and make people feel like they are criminals (see other reviews). Please look elsewhere. And if you see Sara, tell her she needs to deal with her own baggage and stop putting it on other people and poor puppers that have no choice. My husband and I recently went to introduce ourselves to the local shelter this Halloween during their open house. We moved to the area last year after finally finding "home" after traveling the country for 3 years in an RV we built ourselves. When we first started our travels we got a shelter dog in Michigan who immediately changed our lives. Now that we have 10.01 acres and have fenced in 3.01 acres (for him) we wanted to offer the space for any dogs that needed to run (like our dog needs to run). The staff was very friendly and the facility clean. The animals look well taken care of and as happy as they can be waiting for new homes. We stayed over 2 hours! I miss having cats and had a nice time in the cat rooms getting loved on by all the furlines. I will definitely volunteer at this facility in the future. read more
