If you are looking for a new dentist, I highly recommend South Philly Dental. The office is conveniently located on Passyunk, and parking was relatively easy to find around the block. But there is street parking. I was able to be seen as a new patient pretty quickly and my appointment was great. This was the most comfortable I've ever felt at a dentist appointment. I got X-rays, a cleaning, and spoke with Dr. Kim. He was extremely patient and helpful. All the worries I had disappeared. He was also very gentle with his numbing which is the part that scares me the most personally. I left feeling really great about my experience, and the office does a great job of handling all the hard parts. I highly recommend! read more

They do work that you absolutely do not need! Told me I had three broken teeth when in reality I had 0. I listened to their recommendation as most would and let them give me a crown. The experience was so bad I ended up leaving that day with a temporary crown and never going back. Fast forward to now I found a new dentist and this dentist found, that I have no broken teeth and not even a cavity, he couldn't give me an explanation as to why I needed a crown on the tooth I allowed south Philly dental to work on. read more

Who's not terrified of the dentist and generally puts off going until there is an emergency? If that doesn't describe you, congratulations! Yet if you are like me, you know what its like to let the anxiety and pain build up until you have to make emergency appointments...my experience was so positive and positive from the first phone call, having an infected tooth removed, cavities filled, and a crown put on. I have been here three times so far and have shown up on time never having to even sit in the waiting room...they were ready for me and immediately took me back to a room for my appointments to begin. I genuinely felt cared for, listened to, and taken care of. I have a feeling I will no longer have a reason to let the anxiety build up and hopefully will no longer be in a position to have to manage any pain out of fear of the dentist. read more

I've been to this place about 4 times now and figured it was about time I gave them a review. I first came here to have my wisdom teeth removed. What I really liked about this place is that they were very upfront about the costs ahead of time unlike many other places I've visited and called to have this work done. So there were no surprise/hidden costs that I didn't know about going in. Speaking of pricing, their prices are pretty competitive and not outrageous compared to some of the other places I've checked out prior to coming here. The actual procedure itself went smoothly too by the way. And so has every other one I've had since then. Another thing that I like about this place is the scheduling. They're not overly busy to the point you'd have to wait a week or 2 to get in there. Every single time I've scheduled an appointment, there was an opening the very next day or the day after. So, pretty much good things for this place. I only wish they were open during the weekends though. read more

Dr Kim and his main dental assistant (the older woman) are very high-strung and visibly stressed out. Snappy, rude, constantly eye-rolling and sighing in frustration... This dental office is the least relaxing place in the entire world! I would only recommend it to my worst enemies. As an aside, even the front desk staff were poorly behaved (the negative energy must be contagious) -- I watched them laugh and spray febreeze everywhere in the lobby right after a lower-income patient left. I had nothing but terrible experiences here. I went to get a filling in one tooth, but somehow the doctor nicked the nerve or irritated the tooth next to it. It was sensitive to pressure, touch, cold, etc... I returned to get it X-rayed but he said there was nothing wrong. He referred me to an endodontist to find out what he did in there. Subsequently, I am a regular patient in mid-treatment. I was supposed to go in for my second partial fitting, but they sent me some COVID-19 form via text message. I said I just saw you like 4 times. You have all been vaccinated. I sent them a copy of my vaccination card. That wasn't good enough for the business person/receptionist sending me the form. At that point, I have had enough with this dental practice. I want a refund for my first partial payment, I am filing a complaint with my insurance company, and now I have to find a dentist to discover what has been done to my otherwise healthy tooth. The BEST. I've been going to a dentist walking distance from my house in the "Whitman" neighborhood in South Philly but they have been going downhill. Then found this place searching online. The hygienist was so gentle and thorough. Everything was incredibly clean and sanitary. Dr. Kim is the man. He was very careful inspecting the X-rays and incredibly pleasant and empathetic. The lady in the front was super friendly and helpful. I was in the waiting room all of 1 min. before being called in. Everything, I mean everything, was so efficient and they are clearly experts. They don't stand behind their work. I had a thorough cleaning there, and a few fillings, they are aggressive about setting the next appointment, and good about calling to remind you of the next appointment. My displeasure comes from their treatment of an issue I had with their work. I had a filling that they put in, and the edge of the installed filling would always hitch on my dental floss. On my next visit I raised the issue, they looked at it, and didn't see anything wrong. Filling comes out after two years, and their response is that they only guarantee their work for 1 year! I didn't realize that fillings were so unreliable. I've never had a filling fall out, I guess I wasn't important to have as a customer. Edits: Since the proprietors reply. The fact that you do not remember me raising the flossing issue doesn't mean it didn't happen. Thank you for calling me a liar. You are absolutely right, it is quite possible that this first filling to ever fall out of my mouth, the one that you put in, fell out due to some fault of my own. I love this establishment. I have not had any problems. The staff are friendly most times. But I absolutely love the hygienist! (Bad with names-Tanya I believe) Either way She rocks out! I love her personality and her memory is great as well!!! She is very personable. Dr. Kim rocks as well. Very professional yet humorous. I love coming here. They are very good at reminding you of your appointment. I love that as well! Overall, it's a great atmosphere to get your teeth cleaned. Top notch service - which you don't find very often. This place is pain free and fee free. I have great insurance and never had to pay for cleanings. They are very accommodating to my schedule and get me in and out. I never had any issues in my many years as a patient. Dr. Kim does excellent work and has an amazing team behind him. Dr. Kim is about patient care first and foremost, so I trust his recommendations. I would recommend this place to any and everyone. There is NO WAY they will rip you off! Sorry to those who have crappy coverage- it's your insurance that dictates the charges. In other words, you pay because your insurance says to. I learned this from the knowledgeable staffs there and confirmed with my insurance company. So I understand it very well -know your facts and be informed. This dentistry is great! I'm going to start by saying that going to the dentist is at the bottom of my favorites list. However, after a close panic attack and freak out years ago attempting to remove my wisdom teeth, it's finally out! (Well, one side so far) Which is a total milestone in itself! I felt so comfortable with all of the friendly staff and doctors. Dr. HKim literally took 10 minutes or less removing both wisdom teeth, I was so surprised. She was careful and made sure my mouth was completely numb before removing them. She also did my crown and she was so thorough; I had such a good experience. Both Caesar and Sandy were very nice and informative. Dr. Kim is very professional and soft spoken. My entire experience overall was amazing and I'm now actually looking forward to removing my other two wisdom teeth. As far as front desk goes, I'm always able to get an appointment that works with my schedule. I receive reminder text messages twice, which I prefer over calls. I'm not too knowledgeable with my dental insurance but Kate was able to talk me through it and get what I needed done. Recently, my son had an abscess and had to get a root canal. I was freaked out that my son had to get one at the age of 13. I rushed from work, to get answers and how and why? Yes, what happened? I came in and Dr. BK explained, reassured and educated me on root canals. My panic suddenly became calm and relaxed. We decided to go through with the process. My son doesn't have a swollen face anymore and no pain. Teeth is clean and great. All of this was done while my son still had his braces on. I have also been coming here for years. First off, let me stress how much I loathe going to the dentist. My ideal dentist visit would be one where I happily pay a little more money, am put under, then let the dentist go to town. However, since that's not the world we live in, I would highly recommend this dentistry. I have been twice (one for fillings and one for an extraction). Both times, Dr. Kim was so professional, kind, listened to your concerns, and thankfully used enough Novocain to let me not feel a single thing. While I would never want to go to the dentist again in my life (really a good motivator for good dental hygiene), this is the place to go for great work. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Kim since 2015. I have a love-and-hate relationship with the dentist and the staff because of the poor customer service and communication I had dealt with in the past. Over the years, I have acknowledged their effort to provide better care and customer service to the patients. They will send you texts, e-mail, or phone calls to remind your next appointment. It has been quick and easy to schedule an appointment, so for these reasons I am giving them an A+. I have no complain with the dental hygienist since I take good care of my oral hygiene, so my routine teeth cleaning visits have been going quite smoothly. If you have decided to get treatments here, get a clear understanding of how much money you would have to pay out of pocket to avoid miscommunication and issues in the future. These dental services aren't cheap, even with dental insurance. I also have noticed that they have upgraded their dental equipment to a newer model (e.g., x-ray/CT scan device). To a patient, the newer the equipment they have, the less painful your treatment will be -- and it's a sign that the practice is catching up with the latest dental technology. Book an appointment, get a feel from your initial meeting. Shop around and do your research before you commit to a long-term treatment with him. It's a two-way relationship and it takes time to build trust between you and your dentist. At this moment I am giving Dr. Kim and his staff 3 stars, but I am already foreseeing myself updating this review with higher rating in the near future, especially if they can keep up with the good work they have done over the years. read more

I had dental work done by Dr. Byounggon Kim and he's excellent as well as very knowledgeable, personable and kind, and the fees are super reasonable!! I had some questions regarding the crown work he did, and he answered them professionally and patiently and solved any issues!! His staff is just adorable, from the greeting ladies, Siena and Kate, to the hygienists Jen & Stephanie, and he offers discounted plans for dental care that are extremely affordable!! Super Friendly Staff and The Doctors and Assistants were great. I got a cleaning and a filling completed and I was in and out. The Front Desk Manager explained everything quickly and thoroughly and I had a great experience. It was very clean with speedy service and I had a great experience especially being that I hate going to the Dentist. I would definitely recommend this Dentist to anyone in the Philadelphia area looking for a Good Dentist. Most places I go to in South Philly have like 50 people in the waiting room and its chaos and they rushing you in and out of the waiting room and then bill me wrong which puts a freeze on my Flex Card but that's another story. Um, the doc and "most" of the staff are nice, but the money lady is a total jerk! I simply asked her to submit my claim to the insurance to see what they would cover and she was totally rude to me (all the while I'm in the chair at this point and have been waiting 40 mins). She treated me like a deadbeat and said well, I can get this pre-determined and "we" won't start any work now....well thanks for that tip after I'd spent 40 mins there. Time is money lady and you wasted mine. This is not how you treat customers who are about to drop $500....as I walked out and canceled my future appointments, I told her I thought she was rude and needed customer service training, and she tried to turn it around on me, then began yelling "IF you don't like it you can just get out, ADIOS! ADIOS" Don't you just love it when people prove your point for you....sorry South Philly Dental, you lost a patient. I recently had a crown at this clinic. I've seen this doc since 2008 and he never was wrong. Dr.kim is very conservative in making decisions. I took my friend and she felt very comfortable as well cause dr.kim was really on patients' side. The best part is needle injection! I did not feel any pain and got numb.....zzzzzzz. Worse dental experience ever! Everyone at the office is unprofessional!! My friend recommended me this place so I went to try it out for the first time. The girl at the front desk had to call me 3+ times to verify my dental insurance and all... When I finally arrived at their office, the worse nightmare had just begun.. The hygienist that was cleaning my teeth was terrible - I don't even know how to describe the experience - it seems like she was just scraping on metal instead of teeth and gums!!!!! I was in pain badly!!! Also, I was just telling her my concerns before the cleaning process started and she did something to my teeth that I never asked her to do. The dentist finally came and he informed me that there's so many issues with my teeth.. blah, blah, blah.. Honestly, I just think he just wants my money so he's exaggerating - so I'll spend tons of money at his office. My previous dentist did not indicate any of the problems he had stated?! Lastly when I ask him to undo a mistake that the hygienist had done, he sends his cashier to me asking me to pay for the cost. That Asian lady was so rude, never seen anyone that uneducated before! She was basically demanding money and I was arguing with her for a good couple minutes and I'm at the point of forget it - never will return to this place EVER AGAIN so I just gave her my card and paid. I wish I would of asked them to bill me and put a dispute for the charge. The following week after the cleaning, my gums were so red and irritated from the cleaning!!!! The funniest thing of all, they even sent my friend a "recommendation thank you letter" and a $20 coupon for her next visit! How desperate and low class this place is! What will $20 do?! I really think this place is trying so hard to get new customers and they're evening bribing customers to write them "a good yelp review" to be entered in their drawing for a prize?! LOL. My experience here has been wonderful. The doctors and staffs are excellent! I came in as an emergency patient, I hadn't been to the dentist for over 5 years so I was extremely nervous. The doctor was exceptional, he made time for me to complete an emergency root canal. It was painless from start to finish! Now, I come here for my routine visits (every 6 months visit) so if anything was wrong it would be taken care of right away. My family and friends all come here now and they love it. read more
