We had a great experience renting from South River Boat Rental. Nancy was very responsive over e-mail. We rented the 19' Hurricane deck boat for Sunday morning. The boat was clean and in good shape. When we arrived, the staff were friendly and courteous. If you're a first timer at this, you should know that you don't officially need a special license to drive a boat, but the rental contract you sign basically says "You break it, you buy it." Also, gas works like rental cars in that you need to bring the boat back full (there are 2 fuel docks just minutes from the rental dock). Overall, we had a great day on the water. read more

Memorable Bachelorette boat ride! Was in Annapolis for a bachelorette weekend in the summer. We used South River Both Rentals for an afternoon excursion and sailed with Captain Nathan - the sail boat was amazing and was comfortable enough to fit 11 of us. It was a memorable experience and a great time for a three hour rental on the water! We arrived, they had space for us to store our belongings and coolers for our drinks. The captain gave a brief safety speech and we were on our way. The captain was very knowledgeable about everything we passed. At the end of July we took a mid week break to Solomon's Island. The trip was great and we booked our boat in advance. When we arrived our boat was ready and Nathan provided through instructions as it relates to the handling of the boat. The pontoon boat was as pictured on the website. We included the tube in our service and asked where would be a good location to tube. While he did point out an area on the map, once we took off osmosis took effect and whatever he said was left on the dock. We did inform him that we were novices to boating and had four hours allotted. Well, I removed only one (1) star as the instructions could be clearer. I would also recommend using a dry erase marker on the maps to identify various points of interests for your novice boaters, explaining how to read the speedometer as it relates to the posted speed limits. The current was a bit strong this day, so it would have been nice to discuss this also. We attempted to navigate where we thought we should and returned back to the dock after 2.5 hours, never really having an opportunity to really enjoy our tube. Once we got back, we met a more senior man that helped us with our tie offs. He asked where we explored and once we told him, it was disappointing to learn that we never left the wading area. He explained a more scenic route we could have taken instead, that would have been more worth while. No one individual should take responsibility, as this comes down to training. All employees should be trained on providing navigational instructions from your novice to expert boaters. I also recommend as the customer requesting visual indicators drawn for you and landmarks to ensure you're going in the right direction. Yes, I would use this company again, aside from this one mishap, the service was great, the boat was clean and exactly what I expected, a military discount was offered and we did have a good time on the water. read more

We rented a boat for a late fathers day when my parents came into town over the fourth. We really wanted to bring him sailing and were pleasantly surprised how affordable it could be. Given, it wasn't the nicest boat, but we didn't expect much for how much we paid ($250 for a half day which is long enough to sail at one time). They also rent for long term if anyone is interested. The staff was friendly and there weren't may liabilities and hoops to jump through before boarding the boat. Also, its a bit of a challenge to find. Take copious notes or call them when you're almost there for help. read more

I want to thank South RIver Boat Rentals for a fantastic day on the bay. We rented their 28 foot Sea Ray for a full day on Labor Day with a captain "Wayne" for us and some long time friends and had a wonderful time. Wayne was fantastic. He had great stories of time on the bay and his time serving our country. We didn't really have a plan for our day other then have fun and grab lunch and he quickly suggested a few spot for us to go relax out on the water. Then we headed to lunch at Red eye dock bar which was a perfect spot. For the afternoon we anchored in a calm spot to float in the water and we finished the day with some tubing and then back across the bay to head back the marina. For us it was a perfect day on the water. We will definitely go back again. read more

Where should I start?... Picture a beautiful, sunny day with a great breeze.. Picture a 33 ft for sailing the Chesapeake. Picture packed food, great wine and friends for a overnight sail. NOW Picture the boat being a old piece of crap (their fleet wasn't impressive at all) with a backed up head that gave a stench that wouldn't quit....picture having to PRE-CLEAN the cabin that was supposed to be prepared....picture not even having the stomach to eat that glorious food and delicious wine with your great friends....and having to spring for a hotel room and dinner out on the town instead. They had the audacity to actually rent out something like that...but had the clarity to allow a day refund....maybe they were just a little embarrassed?....one could only hope. read more

We had a 4 hour rental of a sailboat on 8/24 and had a blast! The place is a little hard to find but following the direction on the website definitely helped. The boat (either o'day or ranger, i forget) that we had was the perfect size for the six of us plus a captain. To be completely honest, the boat is a little older, not as pretty as what you'd imagine, comes with a little bathroom that barely does the job. But, when you're out in the bay on a beautiful day with friends, that matters little. Also note that the grill that comes with the boat is TINY. It's a small circular propane grill that's attached to the railing at the end of the boat. Also, if you plan on grilling, don't forget to bring grilling tools (tongs, etc) because the boat doesn't come with any. The captain was friendly and informative. I'd love to return next summer :) read more

As the host of 11 friends on the 37' Hunter, here are my comments: there is a lack of pictures posted on the website and I honestly had no idea what I was walking into before our charter. Hosting a group of 11, I wanted to bring food and drinks on board. However, the cabin was so incredibly small, that I ended up wasting close to $100 in food. It was absolutely a lessoned learned. I have been on powerboats but never a sailboat. I assumed there was amble space on a sailboat but the 37' hunter seemed old and overused. I just extremely disappointed by the lack of pictures or information passed along before the charter. It was also my birthday, so it did add some unneeded stress by not knowing what was going on. Not worth $693. Next time I will get a powerboat and leave the food at home. My guest would most likely give 3-5 stars because it was a beautiful experience and we ended up having great fun! read more

We had a great time at South River Boat Rentals this weekend. Choosing and reserving the boat online was easy and intuitive. We added a tube and asked to add a wakeboard when we got there. They were flexible and accommodating. We were out for 4 hrs, and our captain was knowledgeable about spots to take us for swimming and tubing. My Boyfriend and I have been renting from SRBR for the past 2 summers. We usually take out one of their Wellcraft boats and we have also taken out the Sea Ray. Every time we've gone out with one of their boats we always have a blast! The boats are always in great shape and are perfect for fishing, crabbing, tubing, or just simply cruising around the river. The staff has always treated us like family, and made sure that we were well taken care of before heading out on the water. We had shopped around other boating companies and none of them were as accommodating or customer-service orientated at SRBR. They worked with our photographers so well, asked if we needed anything and were ALWAYS extremely prompt in returning our phone calls and answering any questions we had (and believe me, there were a lot!). I still can't get over how pleasant and down-to-earth Joe and Ronnie were. Tried to check out options for boat rentals. Was going to rent a boat with boat bound, but did some research with this company. They offered a power boat for $700 plus taxes and fuel for a half day. My best friend reserved a boat for her boyfriend's 28th birthday on Saturday June 18th. We had the time of our lives! The boat comfortably fit 12 of us. Our captain was Jim and he was phenomenal!! We made last minute reservations for a fishing trip on Father's Day. I wasn't familiar with the area and the staff was understanding and seemed to think of everything. The person I spoke to on the phone reminded us of what to bring; towels, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc. They even recommended a local bait and tackle shop to get us on our way. When we arrived the staff showed us the boat we were taking out and asked if we had any other questions. I was taking my wife, our son and my father out, so I asked for some pointers on where the fishing hot spots were. They showed me a few places on the map and wished us good luck. Our first stop was one of the points that was recommended, with their first cast my father and my son caught two fish! We had an awesome time and we can't wait to come back and do it again. BEWARE of South River Boat Rentals. They do not honor their coupons. We bought a coupon from AAA for a half day power boat rental with a choice of tube, waterski or kneeboard. Upon attempting to rent the boat, they told us that we could only choose from two outboard fishing boats which don't really work for tubing, waterskiing, or kneeboarding. We even tried reasoning with the owner to pay a little extra for a better boat more suitable for watersports and were denied any leniency on price, even with our coupons. Wonderful day of sailing on Sunday July 10, 2016. 1/2 day sail in afternoon on the Hunter 33' Sloop. We came by on Saturday to look around, and a young man named Chris was around on the dock, and he answered a lot of questions for me, and allowed us to board the Hunter to check it out. Seeing we were interested, he came on board, started the engine and showed us a lot of details about the boat. He was great in explaining things, and anticipated questions and things. It all felt very "chill" and approachable. Sunday proved to be one of those "perfect" sailing days - clear, low humidity, brisk winds up to 25 mph, and just crystal clear day. Had to seize the day. We came back to rent, and all the staff here were wonderful, friendly and helpful. The booking, arrival and sign up was quite easy, and we were set to get started. Classic tourists - we packed food and towels for a week, for a 3 hour cruse kind of thing.. and there was Chris again, helping load 10 hags and all sorts of things, getting ice set up, and final review of things. Quite helpful in getting us out of the slip, and we motored toward the bridge and down the South River. Given the direction of the wind, we had to tack all the way up and down the river, and coming about 15 times during the first hour was a bit taxing for my non-sailing/first time sailing friends on board. Once out in the mouth of the river, it was solid good sailing. Here are the good parts; The access to renting a larger boat, indeed any sailboat are not easy, especially bareboat charter, and this group has a relaxed approach to renting boats to you. When you are ready to practice on your own, or want a "drop in" kind of rental, this is the place for you. They have charts prepared for you, and if you plan correctly, you can have a wonderful day sailing, bring nice lunch and drinks, towels, sunscreen, and make the boat yours for a day. We forgot to pack an iPod or Radio, and didn't even notice once under way. Again, the day was almost too perfect weather-wise. We were able to get the boat to move pretty well once we were in bigger winds at the mouth of the river. Nicely heeled over, but just couldn't catch enough wind, nor trim the sails to get the rail under. Access to a sailboat rates a 10. Service from the staff rates a 10. Location by car, and on the river rates a 10. The facilities which are kind of salty adds to the character, also rates a 10. The bathrooms rate a 10. ( compared to any other public marina, these bathrooms are up on the nicer side) The not good parts; (still give 5 stars tho) Less experienced sailors, may not notice the boats are basically rental boats, and as such, they are not pristine examples of the craft. By necessity, they have to be almost indestructible, so if you are a newbie, you will be glad of this. If you run aground, bump off a dock, or spin around in the wind a few times, you will be glad you rented here. If you are more experienced, just set your expectations low regarding details such as bright work, lack of cockpit cushions, cup holders, perfectly operating cleats, winches, halyards etc. We found the main sail hard to trim out, and never could get it fully trimmed. We could not get enough wind or speed to really move the boat, I wanted to get the rail under and see how fast we could move. So the good news is that you cannot push these boats too hard, they are like tanks, which is safe if you are new, and that is what you want! The galley on our boat only had a sink, and no ice box and no stove/oven. There was no potable water loaded on board, or in any event, the water was not working for the head and galley sinks. The boat was pre-cleaned for us, but not perfectly if you care about this. When Chris noticed my disappointment of not having a cooler or icebox in the galley he promptly brought a large ice cooler for us to use. Quality of the boat's condition rates a 4-5. Quality of the important parts of the boat's condition rates a 7. Amenities on the boat such as cushions, curtains, icebox, stove, small fans in the cabin and other niceties rates a 3. (remember, these are just to rent for an afternoon or a day.. so....) Condition and operation of the diesel engine rates a 10. Staggering to me, was the lack of a depth finder. Anyone who has sailed the Potomac, Magothy, South river and even the Bay, knows how tricky our waters are, and while the sandy bottom is forgiving, running aground can ruin a day. To keep depth finders on the boats, and keep them in good working order should not be cost prohibitive and should save the (I imagine) several rescues a week from those who run aground. Summary; If you are expecting to rent a Beneteau, Hinkley, late model sailboat - you will need to search the classifieds to find someone willing to rent their $500K beauty to you(not likely), Therefore South River Boat Rentals is the place to practice and hone your skills to be able to rent a nice boat in the future. read more

After a wobbly start thanks to some initial clouds and rain, the sun peaked through and we were able to shove off. The staff at South River Boat Rentals made us feel very welcome and quickly got us underway. SRBR helped prepare our itinerary with alternate destinations and a captain to help guide us on our way. They really helped make our family weekend a time we will never forget! We spent 3 days sailing and exploring the beautiful waters of the Chesapeake. Our family recently rented from South River Boat Rentals to celebrate our son's birthday. What a truly memorable experience. The boat was beautiful (we rented the large trawler...) inside and out, and the staff went out of their way to make this a truly enjoyable day for kids and adults alike. I planned a surprise birthday party for a friend of mine this past August on the 50' Trawler or Long Range Cruiser as it is officially known and we had a blast! We were able to bring our own food and drinks on board and there was plenty of space to set up. The best part of the boat was the large upper deck where we could sit and watch other boats go by. It didn't hurt that the weather was beautiful and we were treated to a long sunset on the Bay as well as being able to see lots of ships on their way up to Baltimore. The captain was wonderful - friendly and informative - pointing out areas of interest and giving us some history as we cruised along. I even managed to have the obligatory fake steering shot taken at the helm - drink in hand! We also got to meet the owner who took care of getting everything set up in advance for the surprise.
