They've had 2 holes with temporary greens due to "neighborhood vandalism" for 2 years now. They went an entire off season without fixing 2 holes. Absolute disgrace of a course. That being said cheap booze and you can pretty much do whatever you want. read more

Terrible... Disrespectful worker we had a 8:30 tee time however they decided to book a golf tournament without telling people UNTIL they had payed and got to the hole. On top of this Club members were extremely rude just going right in front of about 12 people waiting and putting their tee down. On top of that the 18 hole players were told to cut us by the Club house. After arguing for 20 minutes we're heading out the Course marshal decides to be sarcastic and nasty by saying if you waited there's no line now. Anyone with a bit common sense would have known the next hole would be the same thing over again waiting for 45 mins per hole waiting for the Club members to finish up there hole. I will never come back here again on top of all this it gets worse the course is barely maintained and very dirty. If I can give this course a 0 i would. read more

Quite possibly one the absolute worst golf courses you can play. Tee boxes are relatable to a horse track , Greens are completely covered in sand and borderline unplayable , or there's giants wasps totally swarming it the greens where you have to leave your ball and skip it .EVERY summer it's the same bullshit with this place. I've been playing here for years and I genuinely enjoy playing at this course. My main complaint is that other people don't seem to repair their own divits and it can get backed up later in the day. However, the staff is always friendly, and the food at the grill always hits the spot. read more

This is the worst golf course I have ever been too. They over booked with so many people all being pushed back to the same time. This place had me waiting for over an hour and I never even tee off because the line just kept getting longer. I wish I could give this place a 0 as there are no redeeming qualities other than a great place to go fuck myself. By the end of it I was disrespected by staff and club members just going ahead. Terrible golf course--if you want to waste your time, be frustrated, and to wait around hours doing nothing, this is the place for you. The staff is extremely rude. We had an 8:45 tee time, but due to a golf club tournament, we were delayed until 9:45. To make matters worse, the players finishing their first nine holes were told by staff to cut ahead of us. After all our frustrations, the course marshal made a sarcastic comment as we were leaving, saying we should have waited because everyone had already gone. I don't get how they are the most expensive course on the island and the course is in the worst condition. Most of The workers are nasty and they give Tee times and will rent a cart at 4-5 and charge full price but say the cart needs to be in by 6. People jump holes and they don't enforce anything. Literally would rather play mini golf on hylan Blvd in traffic than play at this course. read more

Expectations exceeded. Having played this course in the late '60s as a youngster I was expecting burnt fairways, rock hard tees and dust storms everywhere. None of these happened. The practice putting green was true. The tee boxes were soft and green - a few could use a bit more sun but they need to remove more trees, (just like Oakmont, PA). The greens were really fine, true and verdant for the most part. Only #12 seemed to need attention. This is a public course so I must calm down. Also, the pro who checked us in was quite nice. Not sure why some had a problem. Theresa who checked us in at the first tee was familiar with some folks we both knew from the olden days when I lived on SI. Very nice. It was a great round on a very nice course. I played all NYC Courses, including RCCC, as a high school golfer in the early seventies and as a parochial school neophyte in the '60s. Love this place but it's way to overcrowded. The staff is not able to mange the tee times properly, they send out 3 parties within 6 minutes so you have to wait a lot, one round will take you 5hrs+ Loooong waiting times. read more

I played there Monday last minute thru a app giving me a deal they called me five minutes later to say if you cancel we can give you a better deal. I get there they overcharged me 5 bucks and no cart plus they had amnesia about the phone call they just had with me so I walked I didn't mind that. Except at the turn there was a elderly gentleman who when I brought up the vending machine ate my money for a water he said "well that's the main clubhouse ask them" he failed to mention they were closed and didn't offer any solutions or substitutes for any kind. Honestly unless it's dirt cheap or no other option I'm not gonna play here again even though it's a short course with drivable par 4s and excellent ensemble of par 3s read more

This is the worse NYC Muni golf course. Stay away from this place. If you're in Staten Island, go to La Tourette: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-tourette-golf-staten-island Here are the reasons why: 1. The greens are so so at best. You can have a hole that's well maintained then another hole which is all beaten up. 2. The course does not have a restaurant or carts selling drinks and food. Since South Shore is in the middle of nowhere, your closest store for drinks/food is ~1 mile away at the BP gas station. 3. The course does not have water coolers or any type of service. There are like 4 water fountains across 18 holes. Since there are no restaurants or stores at the course, good luck playing here in the summer. 4. This place also charges a cart fee if you want to replay. No one does that. Replay are generally 50% of the original green fees minus cart since you've already paid for the cart the first time. This place is just double dipping since they can't bring anyone to their course. 5. It smells. Since you're so close to the landfill, you'll smell trash on a hot humid day. The only bright spot about this course is the pace. You can probably finish 18 in 4 hours. Then again, there's a reason why no one goes to this course. read more

NYC Best kept secret... After not playing golf for over 18yrs, I started up again this past June. I always liked the layout of this course, but remembered what bad shape it had always been in. But I decided to give it a try anyway. Make a long story short, I was shocked that the course is in such great shape..... Played there today 8/26/14 and was annoyed but thankful at the greens keeper and his staff for working on the course while I was trying to play. These guys were all over the course.. I can remember hitting on green outdoor carpeting because the tee boxes where so bad back in the day, but not anymore... Spoke to some of the regulars that play at South Shore and they have told me that they've done a lot of great work in the past few years to get this course in great shape... The course does have a place called the boxwood restaurant... Whats cool is you can call them at the 8th tee and place an order to have ready when you make the club house turn.. Another nice thing about this course and this is a secret so keep it to yourself, people don't realizes what great shape this course is, so its not crowded. The all think they have to goto LaTourette or Dyker to be real golfers... South Shore is the place to be and if you don't agree with me, great!!!!!!!!! Obviously the maintenance staff there are non existent. Still leaves and debris on course from the fall of 2017. I know It Is still very early In the season, but their Is no attempt at all to even pretend they are trying. Tee boxes as usual are in deplorable condition. Garbage cans overflowing everywhere, They can't even empty a garbage can? Last year this course was In nice shape, maybe in a few months It will be back to something resembling a golf course. Booked a tee time online and when I got there they told me "a group of 4 asians" had taken the tee time and that we couldn't go out. Not quite sure why that came up and I'm now wondering what race had to do with them giving away my tee time. This was all after traveling from manhattan to get to the course. This is the response I received to my review. As you can see by their condescending tone they clearly deserve the 1 star review. Also I clearly said it was an hour before it would get dark, but that's ok not everyone has the ability to read. "Golf courses have to have carts in about 15-30 minutes before sunset especially at South shore golf course. "Why is that?" You may ask yourself, this is to ensure the safety of the cart attendants when bringing them back to the cart pen at night. When given the task of putting the carts away and cleaning them before you fully put them away may take up to 45 minutes for 4 carts alone. You always have the option to walk the rest of the course and then walking to your car. Do not blame any of the staff, if you don't want anything to happen to the cart attendants then you wouldn't care what time to bring the carts in. If you want a quick round that you can finish i recommend going to the golf course at 12pm, it will give you ample time instead of driving in the pitch black trying to find your ball while the cart kid is waiting for you to come in so he can go home. If not then just walk the course, it will be cheaper and easier for you!" read more

Been coming here for a while now and it's always the same story. Never any rangers out on the course enforcing pace of play. If you come during a busy part of the day/week, expect to finish in no less than 5 hours if you're lucky. Last time I was here it took us 3.5 hours to play. Today, I had a 9:45 tee time, there was almost nobody on the course, but it still took me over 4 hours to finish as a single. As I said before, there are never any rangers on the course, which means they don't enforce pace of play or force groups to allow faster players through. I understand that sometimes you have to wait when you're on the course, but today there was a foursome ahead of me (single) with nobody behind me or ahead of them for a few holes. I caught up to them on the 2nd tee box, and they didn't let me play through until they were on the 9th tee. Then I caught up to a twosome on 11 who refused to let me through and continuously played multiple balls while I waited behind them. Again, rangers on the course would take care of a lot of this. Also, they are one of the courses around the city that participate in the Players Club. A monthly fee gets you deeply discounted rates at a bunch of different courses. It's a great deal, which I take advantage of. Today I got a tee time on a Tuesday morning for $22, unfortunately, when you let people play on a well-maintained course for 22 bucks, sometimes they treat it like crap. Ball marks and cigarette butts all over the greens today. It's a shame too, because the course itself is really nice and well-maintained, holds up really well after rain, and it's more than challenging enough to be fun. This is definitely not only a South Shore problem either. It's the same story at La Tourette and Silver Lake. I guess it's just a Staten Island issue. read more

South Shore ("SS") isn't the worst NYC course that I have played - Van Cortlandt takes that honor. At SS, most fairways, greens and tee boxes are in decent, playable condition; however a few holes from tee to green required some attention. The course was wet and the rain over the previous days, left some bunkers and low areas replete with water. As a result the cart path-only rule was in effect, exacerbating the slow play. On most shots, my group waited up to 10 mins for the group ahead. As for amenities, SS does have a small cafe that offers some food and drink options. Expect to wait 10-15 mins. A putting green is available to warm up, but if you want to hit a few balls then you would be out of luck. The course does not have a driving range. The course is short, playing 6300 yards from the tips; however one par 3 measured 220 yards from the back tees. The greens are on the small side, without much slope. One or two holes have water, but really didn't come into play. SS isn't the worst NYC course I played and is paradise for the average weekend hack. Mainly this round at SS was an experiment to play a course within a 30-40 mins radius of NYC. Generally I travel an hour to get in a good round If you decide to play SS, be prepared for a delayed tee off and excruciating slow play. Unfortunately I won't be back to play SS. read more

Pretty awesome golf course. Nice rolling fairways with greens that are relatively easy to play. The only time this course is a mess is right after rain. There are a lot of low lying areas. One of my favorites is a short par 3 that is essentially just a giant hill but with a decent shot with the 9 iron you're money. Nice course. read more

Played two Sundays ago. Have played here the two previous years and enjoyed the course, nice layout and condition. This time it was in horrible condition, most greens have no grass, just sand based. Fairways and tees especially on the back nine were mostly grassless. Don't bother making reservations because they let walk ons go ahead of you even as your time is bypassed. Probably will be unplayable till next year. read more
