Derek was great. I came in super unhappy with the latest update to my Brooks Glycerin. Brooks had already done me a solid by swapping those for Ghosts, which caused a pretty unenjoyable wipe out on their test run. After talking to Brooks, I decided I was going to buy another pair of shoes and didn't care what brand because these two definitely weren't working for me. I think I tried on all the "high support" wide shoes in the ladies section of the store and walked around in all of them and Derek was incredibly patient with me. In the end, I stayed with Brooks, but moved from wide to standard width. I hope to have a better luck with my Brooks Addition and look forward to visiting South Sound running 3 times a year as I run through my shoes. read more

This place is really great. It's exactly what I was looking for: a local alternative to just hoping for the best with an online running shoe order or a chain like Fleet Feet. They don't have a huge selection, but I learned how little aesthetics matter when your shoe really needs to be functional. They probably only had 2-3 shoes that worked with my needs and gait/stride, but that didn't matter, because they had one that was totally perfect for me. Brendan helped me and was really phenomenal. Super knowledgeable and attentive. He helped me set up the fitness watch I bought and walked me though its features, which helped a lot. He was just awesome. I came not as a runner, but a casual jogger, dancer, romper, etc., and was met with no criticism. The saleswoman watched me run briefly and helped me find the perfect shoe for my foot shape and size. Although they only have a small wall of shoes (Asics, New Balance, Brooks, Saucony, and Nike), these guys know what makes each shoe model unique, position of the arch, width of heel/toe area, cushion, etc. So -1 star for the lower general selection, but +1 star for having the largest Brooks selection in town! I'm not a runner and for my entire life have never claimed to be one. Regardless of that statement I still enjoy working out (doing the elliptical at the gym, lifting weights, classes, etc) so I know the importance of good shoes. I have weak ankles so I explained this to the people here at SSR when I came in to buy some running/workout shoes. They had me try on a few pairs and run back and forth to see if it looked right. This was a bit embarrassing but worth it for they have recommended a shoe to me that I have used for the past 3 years (of course I buy a new pair just use the same brand/style). I entrust SSR so much that I will only buy my running shoes from them. Each visit back to WA I bring in my old sneakers, show it to them, and they give me a new pair. Done and Done. The staff here is pretty friendly although I wish they'd smile more. They just just don't seem happy and it's been like this since I began going here. I went to South Sound running for a long time until I didn't anymore. I live in the Proctor district and a new running store opened so I started going there. This was entirely because of convenience, not because I don't love South Sound Running. Anyway, so for a couple of times I bought shoes elsewhere. But they always had to order my shoes. This hasn't been a huge issue except that you can't always be sure the shoes will work and you have to order them a couple of times before you get them right. Well, this spring I went to the other store and they ordered my shoes. Those didn't work so they ordered the new ones. Then they said that it would be months before those came in. So I went to South Sound Running, expecting some sort of shortage on shoes or something. But they had exactly what I needed and I left happy, with shoes, after only a few minutes. So I will say this, South Sound Running is great. And if you live closer to another store it might end up making sense for you to go. But if you have very specific and unique requirements (me = high arches and long narrow feet, which means like one brand and a 10 1/2 Narrow), it doesn't matter what store you live closest to, the place to go without having to order over and over is South Sound Running. read more

May I recommend that they go back and give them another try. My wife and son went in yesterday as My son won a pair of running shoes as a result of winning the Miles For Meso 5K in Federal Way where we live and had a GREAT experience. In fact they both can't stop talking about it and wifey swears she will never buy his shoes from anywhere else. The customer service left a lasting impression as the employee was very knowledgeable and helpful. This review was meant for the Puyallup store but If South Sound Running can attract that level of talent for an employee in Puyallup then I would pretty much trust their other stores also. I had a great experience at South Sound Running today. The staff are helpful and courteous, and they offer a 30-day return policy. On running shoes! Amazing. My old shoes were getting worn out, and with my running schedule increasing, I decided it was time to get some better shoes than 'whatever is on sale'. I read South Sound Running is owned locally and employed by runners, and wanted to check it out. The store is very open, with both men's and women's running shoes and apparel. Sara asked me what my needs were and offered to help me with a fitting. She took a look at my feet and my stride, and had several shoe recommendations for me. I tried on about a half dozen pairs of shoes, all of which I was able to take out for a test run. The staff is very knowledgeable about the different brands and models, all the way down to differences from one model year to the next within a brand. I literally just had the best shoe buying experience. Please note, I went to check out a new running shoe at Point Ruston 30 minutes before closing. That didn't stop John from giving me the best service. He looked at my feet and had me walk back and fourth then run observing my feet. Beware: this is a great store for shoes UNLESS you have any special issues or want good customer service. Made the mistake of going there to buy shoes on the advice of a friend and for me, it was a huge mistake. Having a serious knee issue, I know I need specific features in my shoes and was up front about my skepticism that the guy in the store knew enough to suggest a good shoe--he was confident and positive, but in hindsight, he was just selling me into a shoe--not one that was going to be good for my knees. I specifically asked about returning them and he said I had 30 days to wear them and bring them back. What he neglected to say was that if I did return them--I only get store credit. Which if I'd known with my knee issues, I would've tried them on in the store longer before deciding to buy. Fast forward a four mile 4th of July run and all day in the new shoes. By 4pm I was broken. Terrible, terribly wrong shoes. I wore them once and now have a store credit issued by an employee that was rude, uncaring and dismissive. Okay where to start... I walked in to South Sound Running for a new pair of running shoes. I was really excited to ask questions and get a great pair. When I walked in, there were two people working and they were both with other customers. Usually when this happens, an employee will say "Hi! We will be right with you..." Something to that extent. I got nothing. No welcome at all. This may not be a big deal to some people, but I am HUGE on customer service and like to feel welcomed. The girl instantly gave me the "up-and-down" look and she finished with her customer and asked if I needed help. I said jokingly, "I need serious help!!" She gave me a dead stare and said, "He'll help you." and walked away. The other employee was still with a customer!! So I said "thanks" and continued waiting. When it was my turn to be helped, I started asking questions about running shoes...I am very personable and friendly - this employee was not. He wasn't mean or anything....just no real personality. So....I walked into the store happy, excited, and positive. I left the store feeling confused, and moody. I hate when this happens. I did buy a pair of running shoes (Saucony, and they're great!) - But I was NOT impressed with the customer service. I expected a treadmill with a camera attached to get a good view of my feet and how I land when I run, and maybe some better advice on footwear. I grew up in Colorado, and I guess I really took those amazing running stores for granted! I did get some good shoes, the price was decent, but I will never go back to this store. read more

They have a good selection of shoes, but since I am not a fan of Acsics, Nike or New Balance, I was a little dissapointed. Loving my new running shoes ! I went in for the first time a few weeks ago and these shoes are really paying off. My knees and ankles had been bugging me as my doctor noted I'm no longer 20 yrs old. what a great store! the staff is very smart in both product knowledge and training. One example is i had many years of chronic knee pain and shin splints. The manager there, Joshua, helped me pick out a pair of shoes by watching me run and analyzing my gait. The knee pain immediately vanished, but after a couple weeks my shins were still bothering me (as usual). But rather than just trying a different pair of shoes, Joshua sat down with me and talked to me about my training, after taking it all in he advised me to shorten my runs and my stride a little, but increase the frequency so i can maintain the same mileage. And it worked! ive been running now with no pain and being able to do more miles! I needed to check out several different pairs of shoes per my physical therapist and had no intentions of making a purchase on the day that I went in. I was up front with the salesman but he treated me the same as if he thought I was going to make a purchase. His intention was to make sure that I knew which shoes were best for me and yes, I have a specific need. I decided that I really liked one pair of shoes but I was not sure if they were what my therapist wanted me to get. At that point the rep told me that they have a 30 day return/exchange policy. South Sound Running (SSR) made it's reputation by hiring sales people who run competitively in the high school, college, or beyond. They've always been very knowledgable and quite helpful to me. I feel like this practice has slipped a bit. Otherwise I would give four stars. Their selection of running shoes is more than adequate for runners like me. We run for fun and jump into the occasional 10k. Whether I want a shoe for trail running, urban surfaces, or the track. South Sound Running has it. They've got a good selection of shorts, singlets, shirts, socks, jackets... etc. If you can't find anything that suits you at South Sound Running, you're just picky :-) When SSR has a sale, the shoe price is very competitive with the internet stores. Otherwise, you're paying more like retail. I prefer to shop at SSR instead of online. I can talk to runners about the right shoe for me. I can try the shoes on in the store and even run around the store for a better feel. Anyway, I bought bright lime green shorts and bright blue socks to go with my red shirt and shoes. Now I'm set for my usual 9am Saturday run at Point. Defiance. l'm sure I'll look like a tropical bird when I get out of my bright yellow Subaru CrossTrek on Saturday wearing those yellow shorts with red shirt and shoes. read more

This place is incredible. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Because of my pregnancy my feet changed a lot and I no longer knew what running shoes were right for me. I needed someone with some serious expertise. My first visit I went to the old location off of pacific where Ben helped me. He was great; attentive and patient. He didn't even mind my 7 month old crawling around. I found some shoes that I felt were the right fit, however after wearing them during my jogs, I realized they were not as comfortable as I thought. Thank goodness for their 30 day fit policy! I went to their new store where Zach helped me. He helped me go through several shoes, I was even getting nervous that maybe my feet were beyond help.
