I'm not sure if it's the locals that populate the bar or the staff, but for whatever reason, they're hostile to anyone that's not a local. Told us to "get the f*ck out" when I guess they were tired of serving. Oddly prideful group of people for a city like Tyler. Had a more welcoming atmosphere in Boston. Hopefully this place shuts down so an Arby's or anything else can take its place. Better to drink a beer in your hotel room than here. read more

I'm taking the time to write this review, so you don't waste your time going to this establishment. My husband and I have lived in the area for 20 years. We decided to stop in the "speak easy" to have a late lunch. The bar had two people and the rest of the place was empty. We decided to sit on the deck, because of the great weather. Looked, like a storage area, no plants, no ambiance was non existent. But, we had a draft beer and waited for our pizza. I decided to go back inside when the pizza came. The pizza wasn't cooked! I'm pretty sure they didn't pre heat the oven and just served it as is! I took the pizza back and the bartender said, you want a box? I said no, I want you to remove it from my bill and keep the raw pizza! And, she did. No, apologies. I was talking to my husband, saying I was going to leave a review, when she shouted " I'm terrified". I asked her what she said and she repeated it and looked at the Owner sitting at the bar! Then she pointed at the door and shouted for me to leave! Lol I'm 60, and getting thrown out of bars lol so, I gave her a F U and left. Hmmm, a speakeasy in south Tyler. Ok, I'll play- but what miffs me is the fact that I knew that this reincarnation of the old Half Moon was going to be called "South Tyler Speakeasy," by the large LED sign in front. Really...identity crisis? Jon Taffer- hello, where are you? Aside from the weird concept (I mean a speakeasy is supposed to be discreet, right?), the newly remodeled Half Moon [cough cough], I mean South Tyler Speakeasy does have some positives: The owner(s) opted to force the smokers outside. I can now freely go in here, and wake up the next morning and sort of enjoy my rigid hangover, without puking from the stench of stale cigarette smoke. [golf clap]. The food is hit or miss. They seem to focus on pizzas and burgers. The burgers, and fresh cut fries, are actually really good. I'll come here solely for the burgers. The pizza though, is downright disgusting. The consensus amongst our party was to push the pizza aside, and never order it again. I hope that they correct this, as I actually enjoyed Half Moon's pizza. The service is similar to Half Moon. Roll the dice. I asked our server if they had a prohibition drink menu- you know, it's a speakeasy, but she had a perplexed look, as she clearly didn't have a clue what I was referring to. Watch your check too. I've never been gouged, but some of my friends have had their credit cards overcharged, and a few have received a mystery check, with padded drinks. Hit or miss, on the service. I almost talked our group out of going here, because of the reviews,here, on yelp. We decided to give it a try. And I'll tell you this place is really cool. All the reviews that I read (bad) talked about "this isn't what a speak easy is" well genius. A speak easy hasn't been around since prohibition. So technically you are correct, for a moron. The atmosphere was like going back in time. Our waitress, Morgan was sweet as can be. I look at yelp, normally, when going to eat. All the bad reviews are not about bad food but more about mundane experiences by what seems to be pretentious people. The food is quite excellent and not your everyday pub food. Our entire party was quite pleased with the quality of food and the imagination behind the recipes. I highly recommend you overlook the bad reviews and enjoy the flavors they offer. We tried this after reading about it in the paper and looking at their website. First the good... good bar food with generous portions, good service, generally nice place. The bad? Nothing about it is like a Speakeasy. There are some pictures on the wall but they are overshadowed by 10 flat screen TVs all showing sports, video games, and a digital jukebox. 2 Miles from the house so I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered. Grey Goose and tonic only to find out they didn't have Grey Goose(???). So I tried what they had. My drink had more tonic than Vodka and it was pretty watered down. Food was somewhat decent although I felt it was a tad overpriced. First time here, been wanting to go for a while. We went on a Sunday night, so it wasn't crowded. At all. It's nice that it is now smoke free, that is why we had quit going there when it was still Half Moon. We grabbed a table in the bar because we really just wanted a beer and some bar food. Waitress greeted us and took our beer order, brought us menus. It was really hard to ignore the loud, obnoxious conversation of the gal sitting at the bar by the door guy. She obviously works there, and they were arguing (loudly!) about what took place when they were closing last night, both whining about work. Hint #1 - if there had been some music playing, we might not have had to listen to every single word of their conversation. Waitress took our order (appetizer tray). We were just hanging out and watching baseball on the bar TV's, which are nice. I really like a sports bar vibe (this place is really nothing like a speakeasy as others have said). Then, another couple came in and joined the girl at the bar. They seemed to be pretty toasted when they arrived (their words, not mine). Good Lord, they were drunk. Bartender was serving them, and he was doing shots with them. Not his first of the shift, either, according to his own comments he was making - again, we weren't eavesdropping, they were freaking loud! Unfortunately, it took 30 minutes for our food to arrive. We ordered a second round of beers, which the bartender poured up and put out for the waitress to bring. Unfortunately she was MIA at this point. Bartender was back visiting with his friends at the bar. So, after about 5 minutes, I just got up and got them myself. Bartender saw me and said "oops, my bad". The food was pretty good, we ate it all. Waitress came back out, but went and stood over with the loud folks over at the bar. There were maybe 6 or 8 other people in the whole place while we were there, it's not like it was super busy last night. We will not be going back, which is a shame since it's close to our house. We really, really wanted to like this place, but having a bunch of loud (dropping constant f-bombs) folks who seem to have had a lot to drink, who are continuing to be served by a bartender who is also doing shots with them, that's not my kind of place. STT is formerly the Half Moon, but with some new paint and decor. The biggest improvement and what you notice immediately is the lack of smoke. No longer will you smell like an ashtray as the smokers have been banished to their very own covered patio. Oh, and men no longer have to share a communal urinal. Sausage gazers not happy over this turn of events. I went on opening night and expected bad service and food. I was not disappointed. My sever got my simple beer order wrong the first two times. Finally I just let her bring me whatever she fancied. An orange with a Landshark? Drafts were short pours because the lines need balancing/cleaning and came with lots of head. The menu was pretty much the same as before. In the past I have enjoyed the pizza as decent bar fare. Both pizzas ordered by my table were downright bad. Cardboard gas station pizza would have been better. WTH? Each person that tried a slice took less than 2 bites. It was nice of the Mgr no to charge us for the rancid pizza. My server gave me my tab, then promptly charged my card for another table's bill that was much larger. She said it would be fixed but never happened. The bar has several pool tables, ample TV's, and other games such as darts. Not a bad choice to watch sports. I'll give STT another try and going on opening night was not exactly fair. Hopefully they work the bugs out as I would like to have a good watering hole close to home. Week later update: Went back and gave the Kobe burger a try. Not bad at all, would have it again. They still need to figure out WTH is wrong with the draft system as in clean the damn lines. read more

Went to have their Sunday "buy one get one free pizza special." Visited with a friend for an hour and none of the four employees I saw ever ask if I wanted a drink much less a menu. Finely picked up a menu at the end of the bar and flagged a waiter. After several trips to the kitchen he apologized for his lack of knowledge. Seems he had only worked there a few weeks. Had tomato soup and a beer at home. More than 20 times less expensive than the pizzas and beer I didn't buy at South Tyler Speakeasy. read more

We spent a couple evenings at this little joint while in town for the Piney Woods Open disc golf tournament. The draft beers are surprisingly "tall" plus the food was good, with large portions and not over priced. Our waitress Morgan was very friendly. I'm glad we took the time to check this place out. We recently visited this establishment after the remodel and re-opening under New Management. Let's just say the Half Moon management was better and also their Food!. We ordered 2 burgers cut the chili and one with Mushrooms instead. Onion Rings on one, curly fries on the other. Also my husband wanted to try the pickle fries. We got the bottom of the bag on the curly fries, broken pieces NO Curls to be found. Onion Strings, No Rings and maybe 5 pieces of those. Pickled fries? No meat in them and the were cold. I asked for my curly fries to be reordered since I did not receive what I ordered. Fifteen minutes later, the cook has to ask the manager if he can recook the order, then she comes back and said would be 30 minutes for them to be recooked! Are you serious!! At least the manager from the old establishment would visit your table and also the cook, to make sure things were as ordered! Not at this New management restaurant, Would not recommend to anyone.
