We were the only ones in the museum at the time so the clerk who checked us in gave me son extra attention and showed him different things he could do upstairs. When we went down the touch tank, the person watching over and helping with the touch tank Milo was really awesome. The clerk upstairs was really awesome to but I don't remember her name. He took out a turtle that they have to keep at the nature center for my son to look at as a birthday surprise he was very attentive and nice to my son. We didn't get to hike the trails nearby although when I'm with my son the hiking is kind of limited. I want to come back one day to hike the trails here. We went outside on the deck for awhile which was nice. This is a beautiful and interesting museum worth going to.

The reason is, if you're a movie lover and you like to watch your movie on a big screen with great sound, you're not going to get that here. So during your movie you'll be hearing the soundtrack to another. The rude manager doesn't even apologize for it. He just says "it's a 1940's movie house. What do you want ?" "Ummm. 1940's movie ticket prices ?" Look as I said to him, that's fine but you should give people the choice when they're paying top dollar ticket prices. You should at least let them know that this is what they're going to be getting. I def see romance and charm in an old 40's theatre. But soundproofing is essential. The prices are reasonable, and the there is never a line to buy tickets, nor are the theaters ever filled (I've been to more than one movie without anyone else in the theater). Apparently the theater was recently bought by a millionaire, which means that this hidden gem on the north fork is safe for quite a while.

What made it just a little more special is that my wife knew and worked with him as a teenager. (Just a few year's ago.) We parked at the pier and were lucky that we caught someone just leaving. It's not easy on a nice Summer day between the locals and tourists. Once we entered the lobby, we looked around for a bit then went into the theater. A big semi circle of comfortable seating. No one is too far from the stage. Steven's show had a small cast and I could not think of a better to have seen this. The staff is very courteous and helpful. Members are generally very satisfied with the many services and programs. The fitness center is well equipped and supervised and is kept in excellent operating condition. There are plenty of TVs with convenient connectivity to those working out. The main gym is large and accommodating to team soccer, basketball , archery and pickleball. Pickleball nets are easily assembled and the gym weekday mornings welcome free open pickleball. The locker rooms and bathrooms are very clean. There is an on-site excellent physical therapist in the fitness area, who is my go to PT expert, Mr. Matthew Mobius. On the negative side, the building is in much need of a tune up. The SYS Administration does not have a consistent record of friendly and responsive management. The front desk may be staffed with poorly supervised youth doing mandated community service. The squash court walls are particularly beat up, in immediate need of repair. Parking is often lacking due to the strong popularity of SYS. Unfortunately the facility lacks an indoor pool. SYS is an important part of the Hamptons and there is really nothing else nearby that offers such a varied and affordable sports venue. The nearest YMCA has an excellent indoor pool and is located in East Hampton.

The exhibits are well done and informative, covering the local area, fishing community, history, and lighthouses. One of the most interesting parts is the section on the real-life shark hunter who inspired Jaws and later became a shark conservationist. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. I was informed that next year the museum will also house Gerson's paintings. I thought it was a world class museum and one of the best cultural options in the area. The Collection and gardens are open to the public, free of charge, every summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 PM to 4 PM.
