This was one of the worst medical experiences of my life. I was referred to SouthEast Eye by my optometrist for chalazion assessment and removal. Not only did the tech who asked me to sign consent to the procedure refuse to go over the risks of the surgery with me, but no one ever mentioned that the procedure might not work. It did not, because the chalazions returned 2 weeks post-op. Worse, the doctor nicked my eye with a scalpel during the procedure, which caused a HUGE hemorrhage. My entire eye was almost black, filled with blood for weeks. It is 2 months later and I still have a streak of yellow and a red spot in my eye. The practice manager said she would call me back when I called with my concerns, and despite my following up, she never got back to me. Do not go here. This review is from the driver's perspective. Positive: my friend is very happy with the outcome. It was quick, professional and painless. She can see perfectly out of her left eye. Very excited for the next eye. In my opinion, the staff were very kind and professional. Negative: The patient is given a date for their surgery well before the procedure; however, they are not given the appointment time until TWO DAYS before surgery. The patient is told the procedure only lasts 8 minutes. Upon arrival, there is a sign posted on the door. It says driver's must stay on the premises throughout the surgery. My friend was not told that. When she checked in, she was told the ENTIRE procedure would take 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Glad I don't have plans. This means patients who use ETHRA, or a similar service, need to make alternative plans. After she went back for her surgery, I realized the chairs were very uncomfortable. If people are required to sit in those for two hours they should at least be somewhat cushier. I was getting thirsty and all I could see was a water fountain. I asked if there was a coke machine or cafe in the building. I am not a morning person and needed some caffeine. I was told there was not anything in the building to eat or drink. I was able to get a granola bar, meant for recovering patients, from the nice lady at the front desk. Also, while standing there, I saw a sign saying when the patient is ready to go, you will receive a call from a specific phone number. Nice to know. It was summer. I was in shorts. I almost froze to death. For two hours. In summary, your friend or loved one is in good hands. As a driver you should plan on a long stay, bring snacks and drinks, a pillow and blanket or coat. read more

I scheduled an eye surgery with the Knoxville facility in November. Because I wanted a January date, they called me in December to schedule a date, however I did not get a time until the Thursday before my surgery date, which was the following Tuesday. During the call I was advised that I was to not take ibuprofen or aspirin for two weeks prior to surgery - this was the first I had heard of this. I had no pre-op paperwork or information. I informed the lady I had taken aspirin a week prior, and she replied she would let the doctor know and if they had any issues I would receive a call back. I showed up to surgery as scheduled only to be informed my surgery was cancelled because I had taken aspirin. My beef with with this facility is the horrible communication. It took 6 weeks from the time I agreed to the surgery to actually get a date, then I did not receive a time or a "pre-op" call until the week prior to my surgery date. Then my surgery was cancelled without my knowledge over my taking an aspirin which I was not informed I wasn't supposed to do - at least not until it was too late. I cancelled the surgery all together. I will not be back to this office. read more

Everyone from the receptionist, to the nurses, to the anesthesiologist to Dr. Bierly were friendly and professional. My vision is amazing now. I didn't realize how bad they had gotten. My experience with this business was HORRIBLE! They were very UNPROFESSIONAL by not telling me UP FRONT what their rules were before they wasted my time and money! I explained to the doctor doing my eval that I do not have anyone to help me, and that I would have East TN Human Resource Agency bring me for surgery and take me home. He did NOT tell me that wasn't OK! I went through all the testing, and when I was finally sent to the surgery scheduler, I casually mentioned to her that my transportation would be ETHRA. She then said, "NO, you can't do that! You have to have someone stay in the office"! If I hadn't mentioned it, I still wouldn't have been told what their rules were! I am elderly and I explained that I didn't have a soul on the face of the earth to help me. They didn't care, and my penalty for being elderly and alone is that I couldn't have the eye surgery! If they were so concerned about my safety, then why did they send me out into the sunlight with dilated eyes without even offering me sun protection visors! I had to drive 20 miles home, with no eye protection, and I could barely see where the road was! When I went to bed last night, my eyes were STILL dilated, and they have been hurting ever since! The next morning, I called another well-known eye specialists group and told them what Southeast Eye had told me. I asked if they had the same policy. They said NO!!! They said that ETHRA brings and picks up their patients all the time! I then asked if I had to have someone with me. Again, the answer was NO!!! They said ETHRA would make sure I got in my house safely! I made an appointment with this other eye specialist group, but thanks to Southeast wasting my time and Medicare money, I now have to pay OUT OF POCKET because Medicare will not pay for another eval! read more

My experience was absolutely perfect! I had cataract surgery, I can see clearly now with no contacs, no glasses; and I have had poor eye sight since the earliest time I remember; which was 1st grade. I am 73 now and this truly was a blessing. The receptionist, the nurses, and all the doctors involved were professional and courteous. Dr. McDaniel was the best. I would very highly recommend. My optometrist, Dr. Diamond, recommended this group of people; and he was right-on. 5 gold starts to everyone; especially Dr. McDaniel, Dr. Parker, and Dr. Diamond. read more

I was referred by my optometrist to Southeast Eye for cataract surgery. Due to the great respect and confidence I have in my optometrist, I felt confident my experience at SE Eye would be a positive one. It was anything but positive. My first appointment was scheduled 2 weeks after my optometrist told me to stop wearing my hard contact lenses. I was told since I had been wearing the hard lenses for 40 years, my eyes would need time to readjust before I could be evaluated correctly for cataract surgery. Upon my 1st visit, I was told my astigmatism was so bad, it was probable I would still need to wear either contacts or glasses no matter what lens replacement I chose for my cataract surgery. I was also told I would have to return in another 2 weeks to see if my eyes were adjusting better and whether I was ready for surgery at that time. This would make a total of 4 weeks wearing 40 year old glasses. I was unable to drive. Could not see beyond my big nose without the glasses and could not read anything without taking off the glasses and holding the reading material 2 inches from my nose. Two weeks later I returned to SE Eye. I was told my eyes were so dry I needed Restasis AND Systane. I was told my dry eyes were contributing to my poor vision and would have to be remedied before surgery could be considered. The Restasis cost me out-of-pocket $238.00. That was on a Monday,. That Friday I received a call from SE Eye telling me, after more careful examination of my tests,, Dr. Smoak saw what she felt was a hole in my retina and she was scheduling an appointment for me with a retina specialist. To recap--astigmatism too severe to completely correct, eyes so dry expensive drops required to remedy that problem and now, hole in my retina. Okay! That was the straw. I sought a second opinion at Baptist Eye. My first visit to Baptist eye was almost a total about face from what I had been told at SE Eye. My eyes were not extremely dry. With today's laser assisted surgeries, astigmatisms CAN be corrected without the need for additional glasses or contact lenses. I also was told the doctor doubted a hole would be found in my retina by the specialist, but since I had the appointment already scheduled, keep it to be 100% sure. I also was told there was absolutely no reason for me to have been told my eyes needed to be without my contacts for any longer than 2 weeks. I was on my 5th week being unable to drive, see well, or read easily. No comparison. Everything was one negative thing after another at Southeast Eye. Nothing was negative a Baptist Eye. I left feeling nothing but hope and relief. I had also scheduled cataract surgery. I did keep the appointment with the retina specialist. I do not and did not have a hole in my retina. I had a macular pucker--absolutely nothing to be concerned about and no reason to postpone surgery. I believe with all my heart, SE Eye wanted nothing other than all the money they could squeeze out of me. I feel they manufactured problems and cost unnecessarily, not only me but the insurance company. $$$$$$, as well as causing the journey to cataract surgery to be a prolonged ordeal. I would never send anyone to Southeast Eye. I do not feel they have the health of your eyes as their goal. I feel it is all about the money and nothing more. read more

Had cataract surgery at Southeast Eye Specialist. Dr. Goodman put the wrong lens in my right eye. I felt like there were enough issues with them that I decided I should find a different surgeon to fix it. I asked Dr. Goodman to refund the cost to me to pay another surgeon to fix what he did. He agreed and then his main office agreed after weeks of jerking me around, including Dr. Goodman asking who I was when I texted him on his cell (since his office and he were not returning my calls). I had texted Dr Goodman about putting the wrong lens in my eye and he texted back asking who I was. Scary huh!! They said they would send me a document to sign that would be a simple agreement that their payment would be the total financial obligation to me. Instead, they sent me a 4 page document that precluded me from even discussing what they did to me with anyone verbally or in writing and more. I said I wasn't signing such a one-sided document that restrained me like that. They ended all conversation with me. I strongly recommend everyone steer clear of this facility. They are in Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville areas and have more satellite locations. You might think you could sue them to pay for damage they do but you really can't. Dr's association got the legislature to pass very restrictive laws on how you can sue a Dr. which includes, among other things, that you must have at least 2 Dr's from states touching Tennessee or in Tennessee to testify for you. The Doctors formed their own Doctor owned malpractice insurance company. So for a Dr. to testify for you, they would have to do so against their own self interest. I intend to place the maximum reviews possible to try to get the word out and I plan to file complaints with every regulatory body possible. read more

I have been to this eye center twice, once for cataract surgery done by Dr. McDaniels and second to have my eyelids fixed by Dr. Carole Peck. I cannot say enough about the center, the doctors and all the assistants! Both times I was treated with kindness and dignity. And I was most thankful for the Christian music they play to keep you at ease. Dr. McDaniels was a very caring man who made me feel that I was his most important patient! He was both professional and compassionate. I would go back to him again. Dr. Peck was awesome! She did such a great job on my eyelids and she also was kind, energetic and compassionate! In my opinion, there is no better place in East Tennessee and no better staff! I felt extremely blessed when they were done! read more
