1111 S. Fair Oaks in Pasadena. The first thing I want to say is the people who work here are all very nice. The desk reception, the doctors, the triage nurse, all very nice however,.....the doctors both come into the room rapidly talking and leave the room rapidly talking. I had to ask the medical assistants what actually was said. Second of all it is VERY IMPORTANT you find out in ADVANCE what you will be paying after your insurance company has been billed. Usually when I go see any doctor they tell me "Blue Cross will cover this and this but not this". Not here!! No one said anything during my 3 visits here about billing! I was left with a $700 bill! $700! You would think that MAYBE someone at the front desk would have said something? Nope! Nothing. My mistake I know. I'm saying that YOU need to check in advance before you submit to ANYTHING here!! Also, the laser treatment for eye pressure? They'll tell you "it's a little poke". Not true. It's a deep pain that left me feeling slightly nauseous. I don't like doctors who aren't forthcoming. read more

One minute ago 2/21/2022 I've been reluctant to write this review. I was hoping that the issue just had to do with Mike at the front desk and not with the doctors. I've been hoping Dr. Alice would return my call and explain that there was a misunderstanding or something.  However, after today's office visit, reading the other reviews about being hung up on, calls not returned, and arbitrary billing, I just have to speak up. A little over one year ago, I had an orbital decompression surgery. The doctors overcorrected the sutures on the outside corners of my eyes at that time, but explained why they felt it was necessary to do so. While the results were indeed odd looking and troubling, the doctors were diligent to conservatively fix it in stages. When it was at a stage to where it didn't look strange, we agreed that it would be best to reevaluate in one year post-op to see how everything had settled. I came in three weeks ago from today and had my appointment with Trudy and Dr. Alice. They were kind, compassionate,  and competent just as they always are. Since my eyes remain somewhat rounded and webbed in the corners, eyelashes are starting to grow in. The doctor asked Trudy to schedule me to come in to have the minor in-office procedure to correct it. (Just a simple 2 mm incision to the corner of each eyelid). Trudy scheduled my appointment and phoned in a steroid antibiotic ointment for me to pick up ahead of time. When I came back for my appointment, I was told that I needed to pay $2000 because I have a deductible of $5500. I said I was confused because the last time I came in for the same procedure, I was charged $314.51 after the insurance paid their portion. The price should be the same because none of my deductible had been met at that time either (Feb 2021). I showed Neil my bill, which I had with me since I had just paid it the last time I was in. (I had finished paying it the previous appointment because I needed clarification because the wrong code had been charged and I wasn't sure what I was paying for.) Neil seemed confused too and said he really wasn't sure why the difference and that he was just doing what Mike had told him. Neil said perhaps my bill was just for one eye. I assured him it had been two eyes and also pointed out that even if the amount were doubled, it would still be less than a third of what they were currently charging me! He then came back again and said it was a bundled price, but couldn't tell me how or what it was bundled with. Mike then came out of the office behind the front desk and rudely told me "Why don't you go somewhere else. You know, we can refer you out." I handed over my credit card to Neil and sat down. I felt bullied and desperate. A few minutes later Mike came out, handed me my credit card and told me that I was being referred out and would not be seen. Totally confused, I asked Neil if I could speak with Dr. Alice. He said Dr. Alice was in surgery and that Dr. Julia was the doctor in. Neil seemed genuinely sorry about the way I was being treated and offered to take my cell and make sure that he told Dr. Alice that I was turned away and to ask her to call me. I have called several times daily since then and have been hung up on and left on hold for over 45 minutes. I have left messages on the voicemail and on the doctor's paging number. I have not received a call back or explanation. I came in today and asked to see Dr. Alice. Mike said no, you do not have an appointment. I told him that he had turned me away without explanation, and hung up on me and left me on hold each time I had tried calling. I then asked if Dr. Alice knows what happened last Monday and that I'm trying to get ahold of her. He laughed and said "She knows you have been calling." I don't know what happened between my last appointment and now. Why would she schedule my procedure and ask Trudy to phone in a prescription if she had no intention of keeping the appointment or me as a patient? I'm really not even sure if Mike is telling the truth, but I have to think she's at least gotten my messages on the paging phone number. read more

Unlike every other doctor's office on the planet, the appointment time at this office actually means something. Only once have I waited more than 5 minutes after my appointment time to be seen. All doctors take note - it is possible!!! The staff is very friendly and professional. They, along with the doctors, have a great memory, calling me by name when I come. They are also friendly and helpful by phone. For the medical staff, I've only seen Dr. Julia Song, but have been very impressed with her thoroughness, and her long-term view for diagnosis and treatment. She has a great memory, takes thorough notes and is willing to discuss options. Most importantly, she actually listens to what you are saying as a patient, respects your questions, and is willing to discuss thoroughly any issues, using language one can actually understand. Again, all doctors take note - it is possible. I believe the Songs have various offices in the greater LA area, so are not available in Pasadena on any given day. I've had appointments rescheduled when something comes up at another location (presumably), but have never had my appointment moved more than one week. The office seems to be less busy in the afternoons - useful to consider since it is not a large facility - the waiting area is cozy, but comfortable. Both Julia and Alice Song are MIT alumni (undergrads), but don't count this against them - not everyone can go to Caltech. read more

Went in today for my first appointment, referred to Dr. Song from Linden for a more specialized look for Glaucoma. Took 45 minutes before I made it into an exam room. After a quick distance read, i was sent back to the waiting room because testing rooms were "full". I told the staff, i needed to leave in an hour (i had already been there 1 hr). I was then called back in for further eye tests, when that was done, i was sent to a Dr. office to wait for Dr. Song. I waited 20 more minutes before I finally just left. Its rude and unprofessional when Doctors and their staff think patients time is not as valuable as theirs. Had I known that this office was run like this I would have gone elsewhere. The waiting room was packed the whole time, seems to be an over booking issue here. read more

The office is very neat and clean. I had my job interview here and the interviewer may look nice but deep inside his heart he's a totally different person. He may say good things about me during the job interview but deep inside his heart it's the opposite. I'm glad they never called be back to work at this place because I would have had a bad experience there. read more

I'm writing this review to warn people about Dr. Song. Dr. Song incorrectly diagnosed me with first being a Glaucoma suspect then later actually having Glaucoma. I have had suspicions about her diagnosis since the beginning, but her most recent diagnosis (that I have Glaucoma) pushed me to find another doctor. Here are some facts: 1) Eye pressure is normal always around 10 to 12. 2) My peripheral vision was normal on the first test, but not normal on the last visit. I told Dr. Song that something was not right with the test. My eyes were unusually tired that day and I just felt the test wasn't executed properly. 3) My other tests were normal for all 3 visits, except she said my optic nerve was slightly large part on the first visit. 4) I'm Chinese, and the statistics for my race to have Glaucoma is low. 5) My family has no history of Glaucoma, lowering the chances even further. 6) I have asthma and Dr. Song attributed the Glaucoma to my inhaler. This was quickly disproven by my pulmonologist by providing me with the actual clinical research. I obtained a second opinion from the chair of the USC Eye Institute who teaches and practices. He was so puzzled with Dr. Song's diagnosis. He said "How can a so called glaucoma expert diagnose you with Glaucoma with eye pressure of just 10. All your tests are normal including your optic nerve. You're not even a Glaucoma suspect. I hope this helps you make an informed decision in choosing a good Opthalmologist. read more

I absolutely love Dr. Alice & Dr. Julia, I really really do, however, I was heavily contemplating between a 1 star & a 5 star, no in between rating. Even with the GENEROUS accommodation for my entropion on both my upper and lower eyes, punctual plugs, and laser eyelash removal, there were several concerns that I hope to bring to their attention. In several reviews before me, one of the biggest complaints seems to be the lack of organization with the staff members. With the several visits I had in their Pasadena location and one visit to their Long Beach location, the staff are a complete chaos. Having shadowed pharmacists and volunteered at hospitals for my hours, organization & communication between staff members, assistants, and volunteers was a big deal and most especially when passing information to patients. My biggest issue here was the disorientation during the approval of my insurance coverage and what had occurred on the day of my surgery. Dr. Alice had stated my entire procedure was medical, and the woman who checks the insurance plan, Erma (or Urma) had called and checked that I was approved for it. On my second visit with my doctors, all of a sudden the words had changed about my insurance coverage so I called my insurance speaking to 3 different people which they all confirmed my insurance is currently active. On the day of the surgery, I had precisely spoke to Jay at 12pm who had confirmed twice with me that my insurance will cover my procedure. However, upon my arrival to the office at 6:30pm, they began to tell me my insurance would not cover it now and that I was to pay upfront. To be quite frank with you, this was completely unacceptable and more than ludicrous as they could have called me within the 7 hours gap to tell me the news, not the moment I walk in the door. I think anybody who had all intensions that the surgery was going to be covered would not expect to be asked for a significant amount up front out of no where. It seems like there is more than one person doing one thing at a time and messages do not get relayed to each other. I just hope that perhaps some organization amongst the staff members could help increase the productivity of their office flow. read more

Reading over the various reviews for dr. Julia song it is clear that in some cases she has done some decent work. However my wife and I feel it is our duty to the community, and to ourselves, to caution new patients away from her office. Here is our story. My wife visited dr song for a consult to discuss her dry eyes and sensitivity in February of 2012. this is what happened: Dr Song pointed out that my wife had a freckle on her eye. My wife has a long history of eye sensitivity and has worked successfully with some of the best eye doctors in Bangkok and Singapore for years. None of these professionals have ever raised any concern about her freckle, but Julia Song said, "miss, this could be cancer, and I want to biopsy it". My wife, intimidated and scared, said ok. Dr. song did not ask about allergies, sensitivities to chemicals, or suggest my wife wait a week to think it over. Rather she leapt for a pair of SCISSORS and cut out a chunk of my wife's eyelid. The pain was intense, but worse, the doctor applied a chemical antiseptic to which my wife was allergic. She would later charge hundreds of dollars for that biopsy, which was negative. When my wife got home the pain only increased. It was searing. She could not sleep. We called the office begging for help, and dr. Song prescribed more eye drops, also having preservatives to which we later learned we were allergic. The damage to my wife's eye increased, and the preservatives in the drops triggered an additional reaction in the other eye. It has been two years now, and my wife is now handicapped due to dr. Song's negligence and poor judgement. She cannot go outside without wrap around sunglassses to block out wind. She applies moisturizing tears on the hour. She regularly is forced to use steroid eye drops and fears the risks of induced glaucoma. Dr. Julia Song ruined the health of my wife's eyes and our ability to enjoy a full life these last two years and likely more to come. For a few hundred dollars in biopsy fees. We wish every day we had sued for malpractice. We still may. Perhaps she is just young, inexperienced, or sloppy.. Or perhaps worse, she is opportunistic and cavalierly risks the health of her patients. In any case, please do yourself a favor and find a better eye doctor, and avoid our unhappy fate. read more

I visited Dr. Julia to look into possible glaucoma. She was lovely, caring did a very good job of making me feel better, and ruled out glaucoma - yay! Then she recommended blepharoplasty for my aging, droopy eyelids, and I agreed. Saw Dr. Alice once for the preliminary exam and all went well, then made an appointment for last Friday at 5:30 for the surgery. At noon on Friday I got a call from the office - could I please push it back to 6:00. Okay, no problem. We showed up a few minutes before 6, I was taken back and a numbing cream put on my eyelids. At 6:10, I was called again and had my picture taken. When I asked how long it would be, I was told "just a few minutes." At 6:30, I asked at the desk what was going on. I was told she's still in surgery, it'll be at least another half hour. I said "that's not acceptable, I'll reschedule." Got a very snippy response - well, you wouldn't want her to rush surgery if it was you. I agreed, and said I also don't want her to book two surgeries at the same time, or book mine 10 minutes after you've started another one. By that time, of course, my lids were no longer numb! I rescheduled, then reconsidered and decided not to go ahead with the surgery at all. read more

I felt like she was more interested in selling Botox and plastic surgery than in practicing medicine. I also felt very overwhelmed with how much information she threw out and how quickly she gave me instructions. For my 2nd visit they asked if I would change an appointment time. I said okay but that I MUST be done by x time to pick up my kid from school. They had me wait for 45 minutes and the doctor arrived 5 minutes before I had to literally run out of the office. read more

Dr. Julia Song and staff at the Long Beach office are terrible at communicating procedure/surgical preparations, recovery and expenses. Surgical assistants/technicians/medical assistants lack proper education and training to assist in surgery, perform given tasks (such as eye exams) and answer patient's questions. After months of post-operation treatment from a surgery I was literally given a one day recovery time, I can confidently give Southern California Eye Physicians & Surgeons Center for Oculofacial & Orbital Surgery a one-star rating. read more

Dr. Julia Song is probably one of the nicest and most caring Dr. I just moved from NY and was desperately looking for an Ophthalmologist in Pasadena. My eye was bothering me for a couple days and since my Optometrist in NY told me that if you ever feel something wrong to call a DR asap since I can have detached retina etc. Well, I called Dr. Song's office and she was at her Long Beach location but they said that she would be willing to meet me in the Pasadena office at 8pm! I couldn't believe how nice this dr was. So I saw her and she was so kind and so patient and let me know that my eyes are just very dry and that I should use drops more often. Went to Dr. Song for general eye care and glaucoma, specifically, since she advertises herself as a glaucoma specialist. She immediately recommended an iridotomy because the macula appeard to be too close to the front. I had had this treatment in the past through a previous ophthalmologist and although lengthy it was painless and without any after effects. Even though I have a very bad left (other) eye with double vision other major problems, Dr. Song used a more invasive technique which was painful at the time of the procedure (she wouldn't stop) and caused me to develop blurry vision in the right eye. Now I have floaters in that eye and they will never go away. I can't recommend Dr. Song. And I agree, I think she's all about the money. Sorry to have to report this but I feel I have a responsibility to the community do so. read more

I would recommend these doctors only if you have a lot of time and a lot of insurance. A summary of my experience with the doctors follow. There are some pluses about Dr. Alice and Dr. Julia and their staff: 1. The doctors know their craft and do a good job on surgeries. They work hard, they are kind and try to do what's best for the patient 2. They explain what needs to be done and the cause of the eye problem 3. They have a hard working staff that does their best to keep up with the logistics of 3 officers and multiple surgeries every week However, there are many minus, here's a partial list: 1. Wait times for office visits are a hit or miss. Most of the time it is a miss. Expect to wait 30 minutes to an hour. I once heard that people had been waiting for 3 hours. 2. Billing is slow, usually at least 2 months after the visit and may contain some surprises. I was once charged for surgery, when only Trichiasis (removal of eyelashes growing into the eye) was performed. 3. There are never any price lists, so you never know what your bill will contain. E.G. the charges for Trichiasis was $85 for 3 eyelashes. I can easily pluck my own eyelashes for over $25 per eyelash 4. Most of the time, the office staff passes off your questions to the next person. I've only got a call back once out of 6-7 calls to the office. Mike made the call back 5. I got 5 calls from different staff members of the office the week before my surgery. Even though one staff member had informed me that insurance had approved my surgery, I got a call from another staff member saying that my insurance was in question so I had to be ready to pay another few thousand dollars when I came in the next day or my surgery would not be performed. 6. Every visit seemed to incurr more eye drops, more creams or more office visits. I finally stopped going as I don't have that much time nor extra money to cover what my insurance didn't cover read more

Dr. Julia Song is my children's ophthamologist, and I will also be seeing her as a patient. I cannot recommend her and her staff enough. Dr. Song is extremely thorough, has a great bedside manner and spends a lot of time with my kids and answers my daughter's precocious questions (she's four) trusting she can follow. Anytime I've had an urgent issue with the kids, the office has always gotten me in asap. Once my baby son had scratched his own eye and I was stressing out. The office was about to close and Dr. Song was traveling but they made every effort to reach me and help me. The whole staff is fantastic but among the staff I've interacted the most with Janet and Jay who have helped set up appointments (and that cool guy Mike who's always very upbeat); also Janet worked hard and helped me when my son had the scratched eye. Also, Dr. Julia Song and her twin sister Dr. Alice Song are brilliant. Really, they are. Read the bios of these MIT grads who do cutting edge research in their fields and play musical instruments and also do amazing volunteer work. Living with my kind and socially adept hubby who's in Mensa, and also, on the flip side, having met some other brilliant minds, I've learned one thing about genius: it needs to be tempered by emotional intelligence, empathy, and a desire to do good, esp. when you're in a profession where people's lives are in your hands. Or else you get Frankenstein's creation, or, at the very least, something weird lurking in the basement playing video games all day :-). In short, go to a smart doctor but make sure that doctor cares the way Dr. Song does. read more

Today I had an appointment with Dr. Julia Song. My appointment was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and I arrived early at 2:15 p.m. After waiting 45 minutes after my scheduled time, I inquired when I would be able to see the doctor. None of the office staff could answer the question and all they could say was, "Sit down and wait." I mentioned that I had to be at work by 5:00 p.m. and would it be possible for me to get out on time? The staff could still not answer when I would see the doctor, or if I would get out on time. They suggested I reschedule. These are some of the comedy of errors in this office: 1. Their phone number on their website does not work. I tried calling the number on a business card I had and all I got was a busy signal. 2. Several people requested the bathroom key. The office did not have a bathroom key. The key had been lost. 3. One patient came to the office and somehow they had lost his appointment and he was told he would have to come back another day. 4. Although I never saw the doctor and cannot comment on her knowledge, I will say that the office staff reminded me of the Keystone Cops... The staff was bumbling all over each other. I requested all of the forms I had filled out, and they reluctantly returned them with the exception of a copy of my driver's license and insurance card. Ultimately after I demanded them back, the forms were returned. I will never return to this office! read more
