Because of the storms in Alabama on Saturday, I did not get a chance to hang with my mama on Sunday as normal. I did DoorDash her a meal from Southern Caribbean. I did not get a chance to see their environment because this was a DoorDash. However, what impressed me was that immediately after placing my order, I received a phone call from the restaurant, saying they did not have broccoli and asked for my second choice. I told them to give me green beans instead and they said they would have it ready. I got her the Brown Chicken Stew with mashed potatoes and green beans, a piece of jalapeño cornbread, an extra order of rice and peas, and an order of sweet potato pudding. My mama said when the food arrived, it smelled incredible! She had a taste of everything on the plate and called me to say it all tasted great and it was enough to make multiple meals. She said her only complaint was that the green beans were a bit too salty for her and her low sodium eating. No photos this time, but when I return, I'll get some shots of the food. I definitely recommend that you go and enjoy a delicious Caribbean meal here. read more

My grandson and I have been coming to Southern Caribbean for a couple of weeks. We brought my son today, he was very impressed and insisted we write a review. My son stated "It was very, very good! They should get A+ rating!" My son is very picky and rarely gives two thumbs up but he did today. We enjoy the cabbage, rice&peas, yams, red snapper and my son enjoyed the curried goat. I stopped in here in a Monday afternoon after discovering my usual stop in Bessemer, the fantastic cajun restaurant Boateng's, was now closed on Mondays. The place had decent reviews, plus was in the general direction I was heading, so it became my lunch choice. Pulling in, it was attached to a gas station and the ambiance was spartan to be kind. But still we are here for the food, not the atmosphere. Three gentlemen were waiting for their meals, but no one was at the counter. I assumed correctly (or at least I am assuming so) that this was a one man show. There were no bathrooms so I headed into the gas station as I waited. When I returned, the three gentlemen were still waiting for their order and after a few minutes a man stuck his head out, saw me, and said he would be right with me. I ordered the jerk chicken, which was well priced at $7.50. In a short amount of time my food was in a bag and I was on my way. There was really no place to eat in there, so I would be dining in my car. Wouldn't be the first nor the last time. When I opened the container, I was given curry chicken. A bit frustrating, but I could live with it. I had never had a Jamaican curry, so perhaps it would show me what I had been missing. Alas, not. I must say that I found the food subpar. Jamaican food should be an adventure upon the palette, a sublime combination of spices. This was bland and uninspired. The oxtails are good, however they are a tad bit more spicy than the others I have tried. I do like the Caribbean rice that they make here as well. They are a bit on the pricier side, but this is a hole in the wall place (that can be easily missed) so I don't expect prices to be much cheaper. The staff has been friendly when we have gone.
