    Jerk Chicken

This was a DoorDash order, but the food arrive hot and fresh. The jerk chicken had great flavor. The rice and beans were the best thing on the place. Will order with every meal. The broccoli was a throw away. Delivered to me so I can speak to the fiscal restaurant itself.

I'm backkkk and FULL, honey!! Today's Lunch/Dinner shoutout goes to: Southern Caribbean 1116 Lomb Ave, Birmingham, AL 35211 Listen... I had a serious craving for Jamaican food and babyyyy, they did NOT disappoint!! The moment I walked in, the smell hit me like a warm hug from Auntie after church. I almost cried and hugged the cook right then and there I was standing at the counter staring at the menu like I had all the time and money in the world... wanted everything But I behaved... and only ordered 4 plates. Don't judge me. Today's special? Oxtail Pasta - YES, you read that right! And you already know ya girl got it with the quickness! Also on the lineup: My all-time fave Jerk Pasta That flavorful Tilapia Stir-Fry And tender, juicy Brown Stew Chicken Whewwwww chile... Every. Single. Thing. SLAPPED!! ‍ I tore that food UP and took the best nap of my life afterwards! If you're in Birmingham and want some real-deal flavor, go check them out!!

    Oxtails

Ordered the oxtail plate and they served me food that looks like it was meant to give a dog. This was disgusting. 3 small oxtails full of fat meat with not a drop of gravy. This is pitiful and I WILL NEVER SPEND MY HARD EARNED MONEY here again. Who in their right mind thinks that this is okay to serve to a customer??? 0/10

I love the jerk chicken pasta from here. It's flavorful, spicy without being overwhelming and made fresh to order. If you're in a hurry, try back when you're not because most items are cooked to order and there's a wait. There's not a lot of seating (if any) inside, so be prepared to take your food to go. My mouth is watering just thinking of eating here again. Yum

First time visiting. Good service. Food served fast and hot. I tried the curry goat and jerk pasta, both flavorful and seasoned well. I will return.

Jerk chicken, peas and rice and cabbage

I've heard so many good things about this restaurant..we'll, I was in the area and decided to try it. When I walked in it was so inviting, the cashier was very friendly. I ordered the jerk chicken, peas and rice and cabbage. It was very good and flavorful. I noticed on the menu that they have jerk chicken nachos...I can't wait to go back to try those. If you're ever in the area please stop and try them out.

The food was amazing. Service was quick despite the line being out of the door. Nice place, authentic.

My husband and I love Jamaican food. We recently discovered Southern Caribbean and since then we have visited 4 times over the last month. The food has been delicious every time. I've tried the jerk chicken and curry chicken. The cabbage is really good. Whenever we have been anywhere near the area we stop.

Delicious authentic Jamaican food! Large portions and reasonable prices! I had both the chicken and the oxtail here before and it's was all great! Would recommend a try!

I saw from previous reviews they had daily specials but there weren't any mention inside so I just got the jerk chicken with cabbage and rice & red beans. I really liked the sides, good flavor and hot. The jerk chicken was good but the sauce didn't have much flavor. It was still a good meal and fun to try. They have a big refrigerator cooler of can and bottle drinks.

I like hole in the wall places but this one feels sketchy and it's too warm inside. The food was just ok. It was like cafeteria style Jamaican food. Tasted very homemade and nothing to really write home about. It was hard to order behind the glass because I couldn't hear the server. The jerk chicken was ok and some parts were over cooked especially on the thigh. There were a couple shards of bone which could've posed a safety risk. My favorite was the beef patty but it was kinda dry, had good flavor though. Owner and staff were above and beyond kind.

I genuinely could have ordered almost anything off the menu; everything sounded delicious. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget or the ability to consume every dish off the menu, so my boyfriend and I settled on splitting 2 small plates and 1 entree. What we ordered: -Smoked Fish Fritters: a Cuban delicacy. Still thinking about how good these were. Plenty to share! -Snapper Ceviche: personally not my thing, but my boyfriend loved this. I honestly wanted to like this, but the raw fish started to weird me out. -Jerk Chicken: served atop a tomato/bbq risotto that was devine. The inside here is so cozy and slightly tropical. They have a huge alcoholic selection too if that's your vibe. I'm so excited to return and try some more dishes!

My friend and I stopped in for some light bites early in the evening before going to a bar that doesn't serve food. The ambiance is nice. I did find it odd that the hostess seemed surprised we were "just walking in" since there was almost no one there. It took a pretty good while for our server to greet us, but we weren't in a hurry. We ordered mojitos and they were terrible. The lime and mint weren't muddled, rather just garnishes, so the drinks had no flavor. Unfortunately, that was the theme with the food too. We ordered blistered shishitos, empanadas, and ceviche. The empanadas came out first and the picadillo inside tasted like manwich sloppy joes with sugar added. It didn't have any Cuban flavors at all-- no cumin, alcaparrado, cilantro-- just sweet tomato paste. Next came the ceviche, which was unlike any ceviche I've ever had. It seemed to be maybe poached in coconut milk or something? It didn't have any discernible citrus flavor (or really, any flavor at all). It was just a pile of bland shrimp with nothing else in it-- no chiles, onion, tomato, or seasonings. Honestly, the plantain chips served with the ceviche were the best thing we had. Finally, we had the blistered shishitos. They weren't really 'blistered' much, so they were overly firm. They also could've used some sea salt or any kind of seasoning. They had a smoky flavor, but a fake one, like they were blasted with a butane torch rather than cooked over a flame. They tasted like someone had put out a cigarette on them. Very disappointing meal for over $100. Definitely will not be back.

The seating is limited, maybe 12 tables then you have the bar area. It is giving much new business but customer service and management training needs to be taught before operating a business. First, let me say I think the employees would have a better and easier flow of working if management would be of help and not dictate. The owners/management pulled the waitresses in every direction instead of taking orders. This made it very overwhelming for my waitress which she stated, "I don't know how much I can take of this." While taking our order, my sister asked for samosas they waiter replied they were out. We continued to order our food. The party of 2 beside us was there before us and said they had been waiting over 30 mins. We still took a chance. We sat for over 45 mins and still no signs of food. We paid for our drinks and decided to leave. We were really looking forward to it, being that we drove 3 hours to visit but we're disappointed in the long run.

O' Taste & See Update: Heavy Plates Still Delivering…read more I previously called this the "Home of the Heavy Plates," and after another visit, that title still fits. This time we came back because O' Taste & See now has a dining area and we wanted to eat inside. One surprise was that they were open today because they are usually closed on Saturdays. This happened to be the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend. Walking in, it was immediately obvious they were busy. There was a steady flow of carryout and DoorDash orders moving through, and several people were waiting. One suggestion that would help future customers is clearer communication on where the ordering line begins. Customers waiting for food and customers ordering blended together a little. A simple standing sign would probably help. Despite the crowd, from placing our order until checkout took about 17 minutes, which was efficient considering the traffic they were handling. I ordered the ribs with potato salad and baked beans. The ribs were smoked well with good tenderness and a sauce that had the right amount of sweetness without overpowering the meat. The potato salad needed a little salt and pepper for my taste, but after that it landed much better. The homemade baked beans had good flavor. My wife ordered the oxtails with collard greens and mac and cheese. The oxtails were tender and had a unique seasoning profile that she described as having an almost Indian-like flavor profile. The mac and cheese was creamy and good, and the greens paired well with the cornbread. My wife even mixed the greens and cornbread together. The Country Punch was good and refreshing with the meal. My wife originally wanted the red velvet cake without nuts, but they were sold out. I stepped in and handled dessert responsibilities myself . One observation my wife made was interesting. The dining area gives off more of a fine dining vibe than expected for a soul food spot. The space feels more elevated and polished. However, we were still served in to-go containers and our punch came out in a half-gallon style container. The atmosphere and presentation felt a little disconnected. Not necessarily bad, just somewhat inconsistent. The food says one thing and the dining presentation says another. One thing worth mentioning is value. Two meat-and-three plates, two drinks, and one dessert came to $73.79. That definitely puts O' Taste & See toward the higher end of soul food pricing. However, the portions are heavy, the meats are quality, and the homemade sides help justify much of that price. Not necessarily an everyday stop for many families, but the food quality delivered. Food was on point.
