The staff was very friendly, the place was clean and organized but, when I take my pet to the vet and medication is needed, I expect to leave with the medication and any instructions, that didn't happen. I paid the $65 visit fee and I feel like I just brought my dog here to give them money and that's it. Now I have to find another vet, pay another visit fee and pay for medication. Today was perhaps on of the worst days ever having to say goodbye to my best friend and fur baby of 18 years lil bit. I watched helpless last night as my baby had a seizure for over 3 hours straight. But Dr. Lindsay and the entire staff supported me in ways that are truly exceptional, over and beyond for any veterinary clinic. From the time we started dealing with health issues Dr. Lindsay and the entire staff was compassionate and understanding. When other doctors gave up Dr. Lindsay had hope. She enjoyed an amazing year because Dr. Lindsay had faith. This is highly unusual and maybe not acceptable to some but for our pet family it was what we needed. So today I was able to walk away, knowing that they had done everything possible and maybe even more. Being a pet mom for so long means I've seen several clinics and had several experiences, including past experiences here, but the current staff at Southern Kern Veterinary clinic is better than ever, caring, loving, honest, and understanding. We took our dog for a check-up in December 2023, and the Dr. Was quite nice, but be warned this place is pricey. A few months later, my wife had misplaced the prescription the Dr. had given us for my canine, and when I spoke to the receptionist, who I will not name, to explain my predicament She stated that there was no record of any prescription in the file. Thankfully, I was wise enough to scan the script in before my wife misplaced it. Can you believe that when I called regarding the prescription the receptionist insisted we come in for another exam to have them write another script even after I faxed her the prescription she had said was not in the file!!! When PetMeds contacted this Vet for confirmation of my dog's prescription, this vet even refused to confirm the prescription after I had sent them their own script. They told Petmeds it must be an original copy in order to prevent Petmeds from accepting an electronic copy!!! If this is not the epitome of a Greedy Veterinarian, I don't know what is? Took our dog there to try them as they were much closer than our regular vet. After bloodwork they confirmed he needed the thyroid meds that he's been taking for the last several years. However they were unable to provide us with any of the medication they prescribed. When we asked where we could get the prescription filled they had no answer. When we asked if we could get the prescription filled by an online pet pharmacy they said calling or faxing it in to them was against their protocol. We asked if we should just take it to Rite Aid, as our dog had been without meds for a week by then, they had no answer. So we took it to Rite Aid just to have something. The pharmacist there said they don't even carry that dosage. All in all, a frustrating experience and a lot of money spent to have no medication. We really want to support local businesses but we're going back to our regular vet. read more

Required over $500 worth of blood work to renew a prescription that our dog has been on for 9 years. Wont give up the prescription until blood work co.es back. Don't carry the meds so have to go to 1800PetMeds....no problem, but after spending $500 they can't be bothered to call or fax in the prescription. So we have to make multiple 50 mile trips to go get the hardcopy and fax it ourselves. Definitely going h to search out a different clinic. read more

Time came to euthanize our dog. As a pet lover/owner, that is one of the most painful decisions a person can make. In addition to the actual situation, there's also the fear of judgement from vet staff. We lived in Tehachapi at the time, with only 2 local vets. The day we needed to make it happen one vet was booked solid and the other had some new ridiculous policy that they wanted to "see" the pet first to "establish care" (ie make more money off your pain) and then have to bring the pet back a week later to be euthanized. Not a chance was I going to make that boy suffer for a solid week just so they could make money. I'd never been to Southern Kern Vet Clinic before, but when I called they made time for our boy without question, they were compassionate and nonjudgmental, and when they took him from me they were so, so kind. It meant the world to me and was very worth the short drive from Tehachapi. I will always be grateful for this, and the unexpected card later. Thank you. read more

After 5 years of taking my dogs to a vet in Tehachapi, I finally found this vet who is so much better!! I've had so many terrible visits at the vet in Tehachapi so I decided to look for an 'out of town' option that wasn't too far. Someone recommended this one and I am so thankful! The staff here is actually friendly and not 'too busy' for you. They take appointments and don't require you to wait hours to drop off your scared pet. They also have a drop in day for vaccines. They allow you to come into the rooms with the vet and staff, which is really helpful if you have a scared pet. They are a little cheaper than the other vet, which also helps with the additional drive time for me. They are so great with my dogs and I'm so happy that I never have to go back to the vet in Tehachapi! read more

This place is 1hour 15 minute drive south for me, but is one of the few vets in my area that could make an appt. within a day. The place has a small lobby so be prepared to keep your animal in control on leash or carrier cage. Didn't look like much from outside (although they have a very nice little outdoor pet roaming area next to the office). The vets and assistants here are compassionate and very professional. And the tests and xrays went fast. They were not as expensive as other vets used in the past. Was not able to save my cat, but that was expected. They were very sensitive to the loss. I will use them again for sure. read more

This place is a SCAM ! They told me they couldn't examine my cat because he was aggressive! A small cat that has never tried to bite anything or anyone . When I asked them what they charged me for they couldn't give me an explanation and then finally someone told me it was for the exam ! I told her to explain to me and she said she looked at him through his carrier! That was the exam they performed. They wanted to sedate my cat for $600 . They just want your money they are not professionals because a professional would have been able to examine a small cat . read more

Dr. Flynn is amazing. My poor yorkie hates going to the vet....like crawls on my shoulders in terror at the very smell of the place, but she i so gentle and kinda with him. She has the softest voice when talking to him and pets him to calm him down. It honestly makes me feel so much better about taking him because I know he's in the hands of someone who truly does their job for the benefit of pets and not just to make a paycheck. She confirmed my suspicion that he has seasonal allergies that bother his ears really bad. We got him some medicine and his ears already look less irritated. It makes me so sad when he isn't feeling good and Dr. Flynn was very reassuring that I was doing everything right in taking care of him. This is also where we have taken my parents dogs for as long as we have lived in California. It's where we had to put our first Akita down when his long life was taking a toll on him. My mom and I were able to stay by his side till the very end, and it still stings a little to come here. I just know that everything done, is for the well being of the pets. We had our boy cremated and we got a card of condolences afterwards. Fang is the light of my life. All 13 lbs of him. And I know that if I take him to Souther Kern, he's going to be in good hands, and thats all that matters to me. read more

I can't speak highly enough of the Southern Kern Veterinary Clinic. I've taken my dogs here for the past 7 years and they've always treated us well. Today, I had to get my senior German Shepherd euthanized. She was bleeding internally and in pain and we agreed that the best course of action would be to humanely euthanize her. The doctors and staff were kind, compassionate, and very professional. While I was very sad to say goodbye to my beloved German Shepherd (and tears were shed), the folks at this clinic made it that much more bearable. I can't thank them enough for taking care of us and also helping my beloved dog cross the rainbow bridge. read more

After spending hundreds on a diagnosis for my 12 year old Samoyed, I found Southern Kern online and was thrilled that Dr. Darrow is also certified in chiropractic medicine. I suspected a pinched nerve and the pain meds the other vets had put him on were helping but also killing his appetite and giving him severe diahhrea. After 6 treatments (adjustments) he is back to his old self and for the most part free of pain. We are starting to slowly wean him off of the pain meds. Dr. Darrow is also an nutritionist and supports my home-made diet to treat his kidney issues, staving off kidney failure. I live in Tehachapi but have been going to Bakersfield seeking better care, and Rosamond is so much closer! I highly recommend this practice. read more

Awesome vet one of the best and the only one we trust. They get you in on same day and or short notice. Always caring always giving and they offer 10% military discount. Anytime we have had issues or check ups they are straight forward. They don't look to over charge like most other places and actually care about your animal. They took care of us with our last dog who unfortunately passed away but never charged us for the surgery. We live them and our dog lives them too. Best bet in the AV and I highly recommend trying them. I don't give five stars often but they truly deserve it. Great staff, great doctors and nurses. read more

In the last year, I have lost both of my Beagles to very different circumstances. Both were elderly and both required a lot of care in their final months. Dr Darrow was even very honest and said she doesn't think my dog needed a dental cleaning (which I was happy about because it saves me $$). This review is long overdue, but I wanted to take the time to recognize an outstanding crew all around. Up until about 3 years ago, vet visits had only ever been annual preventative health exams and vaccines. However, between an aging dog and a young one with a lifelong condition, in no exaggeration we are here weekly. Trust me when I say they are the best of the best. In fact, in our household the word "vet," is as highly esteemed as "park," or "walk." When your dog perks up and runs to the car when they hear their vet's name, you know you've got a good one. With our younger girl, Olive, we struggled for months after her adoption with UTI's and urinary incontinence. They ran endless UA's (at our request - not pushing them on us) and tests to try and pinpoint a cause as she was only right around a year old. They were so kind when we'd return over and over with the same issue. When they reached the end of their diagnostic capabilities, they suggested we see a specialist to ensure there wasn't anything else going on. We received a clean bill of health from the specialist and ended up back here for treatment. Dr. Flynn was able to diagnose initially and Dr. Darrow has since walked us through every approach possible to help manage Olive's condition, from traditional western medicine to more holistic approaches such as acupuncture and herbs - which we now use with complete success. Dr. Darrow worked diligently with us to find a schedule to allow Olive to maintain urinary continence while being completely off of any medication. They've bent over backwards to accommodate my work schedule, ensuring that Olive always receives her treatment. There's no way to truly convey the stress this has taken off of all of us - not having to mess with doggy diapers, not having the side effects of western medicine, or most importantly never having to worry about long term medication safety of Proin. With our older girl, Zurie, Dr. Darrow quite literally saved her life. She had a rapidly growing lump last year that I had another vet closer to home look at. That vet told me it was a wart or skin growth and that I didn't need to worry about it. I had a bad feeling in my gut, so we got a second opinion from Dr. Darrow. She immediately strongly recommended to have it removed due to the high likelihood it was cancer, as was common with her breed. After a surgical removal, it turned out to be a mass cell tumor- a cancer that would've spread rapidly had we not caught it quickly. The months following surgery were rough health wise for Zurie, but they were there every step of the way and continue to provide supportive care as she reaches her golden years. All that being said, whether you're near or far, this is the vet you can genuinely trust. Even working for another local vet - Southern Kern is the one I come to due largely in part to how open and supportive they are to a truly holistic approach. I am dreading the day we have to move and find another vet's office of this caliber. Their whole office staff is incredible. To the girls that treat Olive like their own every single week - Stacy, Alyssa, Christina, Amanda, and of course Dr. Darrow - thank you from the bottom of our hearts! read more

We took our cat here for some tests, and the experience was wonderful! Everyone was personable, from reception to the nurses to the doctors. I felt very taken care of and they were all so sweet to our little Frankie. The visit was at a reasonable cost (about $45), and the stool sample test was as well ($30). I know seeing the vet can quickly become a large expense and I appreciated the fair prices. We will definitely be back for all of our vet needs! read more

Last Thursday, my wife and I came home and found our cat Dusty laying on the floor with puke all around him. He was in pain and very lethargic. We called Southern Kern Veterinary Clinic here in Rosamond and they were able to get us an appointment that same evening. They kept Dusty overnight and took a battery of tests and put him on an IV and gave him antibiotics. The following afternoon they said we could come get him. Although to this date we don't know exactly what made him so sick, but he's now back to being himself and we couldn't be happier. A friend took their pet to be fixed. Everything was decided last week on the cost of the procedure. All of a sudden, there were extra charges due to procedures that were agreed to NOT do. I just received a letter from Southern Kern, here is what it says: "Dear Isabell C., This letter is to inform you that our clinic, Southern Kern Veterinary Clinic, will no longer be able to provide services to you and your pets. One of the most important criteria for the delivery of veterinary medical care from veterinarians and staff members at this facility is a polite, effective, comfortable, and open avenue for communication. Additionally, shared confidence between client and doctor is an essential component of an effective veterinary-client-patient-relationship. We regret the need to sever this relationship, but feel it is the best interest of both parties." Obviously, this letter was written in retaliation to my review here on yelp. If Stacey had followed the office rules outlined in the letter I would have not written such a bad review. I am amazed that the owner of this practice allows her staff to mistreat and abuse costumers in such a way. read more

Absolutely wonderful vet and would highly recommend. I took my baby Jack Russell in for an eye to be removed as she had glaucoma and was blind in the eye. Dr. Darrow was very sweet and took great care of my sweet Bella. She healed super quickly and the biggest problem was keeping her down for 2 weeks, as they warned. Had an emergency with our dog and that was the nearest place to take her. The staff was so excellent, and so willing to help. Usually my dog has tons of anxiety being places she's not used to, but after about 5 mins she calmed down and was fine. I would definitely recommend taking your pet there. read more
