What a perfect find for us!! The selection and the care of the variety of products offered is refreshing. The employees know their products. Besides seafood they have a small store area with items that you might need to go along with your purchase. They offer a lot of locally caught products. They have a weekly email that gives prices and buying guides. The also can steam your food for you. We did some shrimp and it was perfectly cooked for us to eat hours later. They know about carry over cooking!!!! They pack for travel as well. We took an ice chest home and everything was perfect at the end of our 8 hour drive. This seafood store has been one of my favorite finds in Tallahassee. It's located on the north side in a plaza with plenty of parking but also set far away from Trader Joe's and the big stores to avoid all the craziness. They offer an expansive selection of seafood and well as condiments to go with your seafood. I was on the hunt for sushi grade ahi tuna and that is exactly what I got! The fish was PERFECTION! It was fresh, flavorful and everything you'd want in ahi tuna. I will definitely be back for more as well as to try some of their other offerings. I love this seafood market. I've been coming here for about 6 years now and I have no complaints. The seafood is always fresh and the staff is very helpful. They have a wide variety of different seafood to choose from as well. On this trip I got a filet of their red snapper and some ruby red shrimp. I also got a couple lemons for seasoning. I haven't had a chance to make the snapper yet but the shrimp was delicious! I changed my diet to include more seafood a couple years ago so I come here offer. First, Southern Seafood has a great selection of fish and seafood. We have never been disappointed. If you sign up on their web site they will email you their weekly price list and specials. I did want to let you know that they also have amazing customer service during the pandemic. If you call in your order, they will have it ready to go for curbside pickup! All you need to do is let them know when you are coming. Then you park and call them from the parking lot. They will bring out your order (and even put it on ice if you ask) and you can pay at your car. Their payment system is contactless and support Apple Pay among others. So if you are looking for fantastic seafood at a good price, with outstanding customer service, give them a try. Every year, on (or very soon after) the opening of Florida's stone crab season on October 15, I call my favorite fish monger, Southern Seafood, to reserve the biggest claws they can find for my annual "First Catch Feast." It's been a tradition in my home for over three decades. I think the crew at SS may actually recognize my voice; they certainly expect my call. This year, we had to postpone our annual full-on feast because of residual post-Hurricane craziness -- but I couldn't resist or deny myself tasting that uber-fresh, delectable, sweet claw meat. So we scaled back to a "First Catch Snack." The cost was a little crazy: $45/lb for colossals - but we HAD to spring for it. There is simply nothing better than fresh stone crab claws -- and I believe the bigger the better. And these monsters were amazing. (Plus, "first catch" just comes once a year. Splurge worthy.) As usual, I cracked and completely cleaned each claw, exposing pure meat and accompanied them with a mustard sauce (recipe from the iconic Joe's Stone Crab in Miami) and hash browns (traditional side). It's good to know I can always count on Southern Seafood to have the best, freshest seafood -- and, especially, the best stone crabs in the region from October 15 until the season ends on May 15. read more

The counter help is always awesome, lines move quickly and the display case is always brimming with succulent (recently swimming) seafare. Ran in to Southern Seafood yesterday because I needed salmon and support local whenever I can. I saw that there new location is not open yet but it looks beautiful and I cant wait to go when they do open. Going in there was only one other customer and someone came out from the back quickly to help me. Masks and gloves were worn, everything looked clean and they always have the best variety! I was able to get in and out very fast, which nowadays I think is what everyone wants! They were nice enough to offer to put it on ice for me, which is such a simple thing that you only get from a local shop. I declined since I live near by but it was to know the option is there if I did need it. The quality of the seafood is always wonderful! I also appreciate that they have breading, lemons, those little things you need with seafood but dont want to run a separate trip to the grocery store. Thanks Southern Seafood! I bought a pound and a half of large shrimp midday. I steamed them, in the shell, in beer, lemon slices, and a teaspoon of Zatarain's seafood boil. They are so, so salty! I added no salt; they had to have been brined in very salty brine. I have steamed shrimp this way for years and never, ever had such an extremely salty batch. When I called, the person who answered the phone was unconcerned and said he knew of no other such complaints. Complacency over a poor product has lost them a customer. read more

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, I purchased a product from here in the amount of $115.00. Well after cleaning and preparing the product on the following Sunday, the product began turning blue in color. I returned to the store on March 13, 2023 and bought the product with me. The manager told me that he couldn't see where this was his problem!!! The damn product wasn't any good but it's not your problem. He wouldn't return my money but gave me a store credit. At this point, I am about to say if he was talking to a person of a different color, the outcome would have been different. You live and you learn. If i bought one bad product, what makes him think that i would want to purchase something else or what gave him the right not to give my money back? I gave his nasty ass his product back. Here you'll find the best and freshest selection of both coastal and pelagic species of fish and shellfish at moderate prices that still shame what you'll encounter say next door at the Fresh Market. On any given day expect to find whole loins from which to designate your specific cut of Atlantic Salmon, Coho/King Salmon, Yellowfin Tuna, Patagonian Toothfish (Chilean Seabass; they're delicious, but heavily threatened), Cobia, Gag/Black/Red/Scamp/Yellowedge Grouper, Redfish, Swordfish, Red Snapper, Halibut, Mahi, Wahoo and Amberjack. In recent months they've also added to the mix whole small fish like Pompano, Sea Trout, Flounder and Hogfish (only place in Tallahassee that I've ever seen them). If you're in the mood for some anaphylactic action you can get your hands on local Alligator Point clams, Prince Edward Island mussels, live Maine lobsters, Florida lobsters, diver and bay scallops, stone crab claws, five or six varieties of white and pink gulf shrimp, rock shrimp, crawfish, softshell crabs, Apalachicola oysters, squid, conch, frozen Snow/King/Dungeness crab and octopus. There's also frogs legs and a full compliment of caviars (Osetra and Beluga off the top of my head, I believe also some American sturgeon and maybe Sevruga). The fully stocked freezers on the shop floor overflow with all sorts of additional seafood items like flash-frozen sushi-grade tuna and salmon, assorted flying fish roes (plain, wasabi and yuzu tobiko, etc.), ready-made chowders, salt cod and a huge compliment of locally-produced Cajun items. Think things like tasso, Turducken, cajun-stuffed crab and pork loins, etc. Browsing the shelves provides an additional compliment of whatever you'll need to prepare and serve your catch: spices, rubs, shellfish tools, crab boil and all that goodness. If you're bargain shopping and prefer small, whole fish for your dishes (mullet, mackerel, catfish, grunts, snapper) then Mike's Seafood or a handful of the other small markets are going to be your go-to spot. I always shop Southern Seafood, I have purchased the Mahi Mahi, Ahi Tuna Filets, Shrimp and I really love their frozen Crawfish Ettouffe, Crawfish Bouidan and the Gumbo. Today again I was very disappointed with Southern. Called and asked if the had mangrove snapper. They answered no. Asked if they had regular snapper employee in formed yes it came in on thursday (outside my 3 day window of OK) Said I would just come in and purchase after taking a look. Arrived and saw mangrove snapper in case. Asked when it came in and employee informed she did not know but would check. She checked and he said all the snapper came in on Friday. So 3 wrong answers so far on snapper so I give up on this fish. The see one pompano with un cloudy eyes but it's not big enough so I ask if they have another lady turns around and ask guy if he knows and he says he will have to check. Lady informs me she is gonna take care of another customer while he finds out. He goes and takes unrelated phone call. I give up and order grouper. I hope its fresh although I have no idea and did not ask at this point as any answer would probably be a lie. This is two strikes with me, I hope you guys figure it out. read more

Southern Seafood in Tallahassee, FL is a huge rip off. They are CROOKS and charge you for more than you actually receive. To top it off, the staff is extremely rude! This review is after giving them several chances to redeem themselves, since this is the only true seafood market on the NE side of Tallahassee. I have weighed my stone crabs twice after getting home and both times it was half a pound less (at least) than what I paid for. At $25 per lb, that's $50 (at least) that they've stolen from me! It could be my scale you say? I purchased a second bag of stone crab claws tonight - 3 lbs for my family and 3 lbs for my friend's. The bags looked like there weren't enough claws to make 3 pounds so I weighed them once again. My bag was half a pound light. The crazy part was the guy charged me for two bags of claws, the first at 3.26 lbs and the second at 3.3 lbs. Now, I have weighed mine and discovered he ripped me off for 3/4 of a pound on mine. Next, I call my friend and ask him to weigh their claws - 2.6 pounds, 7/10 of a pound light! Seeing as how this has happened to me in the past, I am sure that is a common thing for Southern Seafood. I am completely disappointed and VERY upset that they have stolen so much money from me. I will NOT be giving them another chance. DO NOT GO THERE! BEWARE of their tricks! Best seafood market in Tallahassee. When oysters are in the season they are always fresh and pre washed so you dont have to deal with the mess. They even sell them by the pint already shucked.
