I had great fun and even better dinners after shopping here for the first time! Everyone who helped me was friendly and full of good advice. They even got me a steak from the back since what we wanted wasn't in the display case meaning they had sold many steaks! Sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper, garlic and a little avocado oil in our well seasoned cast iron pan. Bam! 3 minutes a side on medium high, rest for 5 or 10 minutes, and a perfect crusty, seasoned medium rare was the result! Hungry yet!? Easy peasy! Super delicious and enough for several meals and a lunch sandwich for me! This was with the very affordable wagyu sirloin and not with a fancy, huge porterhouse or NY strip that I might typically purchase from a butcher! On a whim, we opted to go to the butchery and pick up steaks to grill for the evening meal. While we were there, we looked at all the fresh meats they had ready, including the seasoned breasts of chicken, the sausages and the kebabs. Everything looked so tasty. We opted to pick up 2 steaks and 3 breasts of chicken, two cajun and one garlic. On the grill these thick breasts turned out delicious as did the two steaks. We were really happy with our purchases. My daughter drives 20 minutes to get meats from this butcher shop! Usually when she is grilling out. Over the last year I have sampled their meats every time I visited my daughter and this visit we stopped by the market together. I was impressed by the size of the store and the variety of specialty foods in addition to standard meats. Like most butcher shops- they usually have a deal of the day, but the rest of the prices are generally higher than a supermarket. That reflects the quality of the meats- so that is fine by me. My daughter bypassed the special of the day and went right for the steaks that she wanted. Meanwhile- I was picking up some sarsaparilla soda- a rare treat in my world. Really a fan of Southern Steer Butcher. Everyone has solid customer service skills in this place from the guys who sling that meat in the back to the people who tend the cash. I've been here 3 times. First was the most impressive. I did buy almost $150 dollars in meat because I was so excited when I walked in. I mean, if a tiger or bear or velociraptor walked into a field with as much of a meat selection as South Steer Butcher had, there would be some severe differences in the evolutionary chain. I.E. OMG this place has the meats! So, first. I ate some grilled pre-made hamburgers. Both the blue-cheese and the cheddar stuffed were unbelievable. Accompanied by the buns they sell onsite and the Florida made chips and salsa began an experience beyond my mouths comprehension and gained most likely a life-long customer. Second, I had the bone-in ribeye tonight cooked on my Kamado Joe. Seared at 700+ degrees and the finished off to a perfect Medium rare, I never want to eat out at a restaurant steak again. Salt, pepper, olive oil...that's it. I was in heaven. Third, Customer service. Love this place. Everyone here loves the meats. They even have cooking/prep classes. During COVID-19, we found ourselves purchasing a smoker since eating out wasn't going to happen for quite sometime. Publix and Land and Sea was not going to cut it for my new Traeger so Southern Steer Butcher here we come. In early November, I put in my order for a fresh, "never frozen" turkey and picked it up 2 days before Thanksgiving (on Tuesday). I unpacked it on Wednesday to brine it, and it was indeed frozen. I called and spoke to the manager, who told that their "turkeys are never frozen, but you may have one that was a little frosted," amd that I should just put it in a cooler overnight. After 6 hours on the smoker, we ate our Thanksgiving dinner without the turkey because it was bloody in the thighs and too pink in the breast. $50 bucks down the drain. Thanks Southern Steer. Kirk, at the meat counter.... saw us wonder in looking alittle lost. He from the get go ... introduced himself and asked if we had been there before. We told him no. He gave us the whole run down of the place. We settled on a 5 lb brisket and 2 steak tips ( marinated-steakhouse & Argentina). After our military discount, 48 bucks! After looking at the very high ratings I decided to go to Southern Steer. I am very disappointed. Their "Italian sausage " was inedible and we threw it in the trash. It was the worst sausage I ever had. I should hav know because after seeing all the different kinds of meat "marinating " in the case, I guess they are trying to appeal to a different demographic. Too bad but Sam's has pretty good beef and Publix sausage is better. Five stars because this places Argentinian marinated steak is da bomb. I found out about this place nearly two years ago as they frequent Dunedin festivals with their food offerings but also have the brilliant idea of free samples and it was live at first bite. This steak is the most tender you will ever have for steak tips and just enough marinade that you can still taste the beef. They also have the marinade of chicken and other proteins as well as many other marinades. But if you just get one thing it is the Argentinian beef. Each time I've been there the service has been excellent so even if I thought they were a four star I'd give them a five. But they are a five star. Amongst their meet offerings they have various salads, vegetables and some seafood amongst freshly made sandwiches. This is truly a one stop shop for your cookout needs. read more

We went in there and upon first entering the whole place smells strongly of household bleach. we decided to purchase some breakfast sausage. We saw there was some nice pink breakfast sausage in the front of the case. When we asked if we could have the pink sausage vs. the grey sausage that they tried to sell us the answer was no we have to sell the older stuff first. When we went to make breakfast this morning the sausage had a nasty bad smell and we had to throw it in the trash. The cases seem to be filled with mostly marinated meats. Okay, this place is legit. My cuz recently moved to the area and asked me if I knew of a reputable butcher, and I referred him to Southern Steer based on Yelp reviews and some filets I had a few years back on Super Bowl Sunday. However, I hadn't actually been until today. I scooped up a lamb slider with mint and a bleu cheese burger along with some white cheddar southern mac n cheese. Brought them home and slapped them on our virgin grill and BOOOOOYA! I dare a restaurant to serve me a better burger, seriously. And they were less than $2. McDonald's can't even compete with that price, and this beef is from the good ole U.S. of A. -- Creekstone Farms in Kansas. They also carry craft beers and some grocery items like Da Sesto's TamPasta (fresh pasta), as well as their sauces. But the item that excited me most was the Sunset Salsa. I haven't seen this stuff in about 15 years. I used to buy it by the shopping bag full from Robert's on Westshore Boulevard. It is the absolute best stuff a salsa lover can get outside of a restaurant. While there, ask them about their meat marination process; it will scientifically blow your mind. I signed up for a rewards card, and I pledge my meat loyalty to Southern Steer! I started coming here because of the reviews but return because of quality of their meats. After trying most of the different flavors of marinades, I found I like the ranch marinade on the chicken and Argentine marinade on the beef. My family also enjoys the pork roasts. This place is amazing. Our new local butcher shop for sure! They staff is very insightful and friendly! The offer packaged deals that are going to save us money. They have marinated beef tips and chicken. Make all their sausages in house. The wife and I picked up some porterhouse steaks and they were so good. One of the best cuts I've had in a long while. There are several pre-marinated options for beef and chicken as well as kabobs and a variety of fresh sausages like andouille and chorizo. Sign up for their frequent buyer program (free) which entitles you to perks and first notification of sales. COVID has done a number on supply for meat in our local grocers, but you can always find what you need here. Besides meat, there are a number of gourmet food items from spices and seasonings to dry goods like pasta and specialty rice. There's a decent selection of cheeses, wine and craft beer, as well as some prepared grab and go sides to cook at home.There is also a senior hour first thing in the morning to keep older folks safe during the pandemic.
