I'm definitely not a city person, so anything downtown felt too industrial and cold for me. Hotel ballrooms were fine, but they'd take a lot of lights and decor to ensure the event felt like a wedding, not a conference or business meeting. All the other country clubs we checked out were old, worn, stuffy, or much too cramped for a party our size. The SBCC was perfect - the simple and elegant decor felt warm and welcoming and the high ceilings and oversized windows made the venue feel open and inviting. The drive to the club from downtown South Bend is a scenic 25 minute venture through wooded regions and grassy clearings. The roads are plowed & salted in the winter (January wedding), making transport to the venue a smooth, albeit a bit long, journey. Upon arrival, you'll notice the grounds and exterior structure are well looked after, with plenty of ideal areas, both indoor and outdoor, for pictures. There's a curved stairwell and massive fireplace indoors, classy covered porches, and a number of nearby grassy spaces overlooking the scenic lakes in the distance. You wouldn't be able to tell it's a golf course from the pictures! Furthermore, the oversized double door entrance with a wide foyer provides a warm welcome and the long, covered patio gives the ideal location for a hearty send-off! We had about 200 people on 19 tables with a large head table in front of the fireplace. The room felt very full, but not suffocating, and there was enough space for the dance floor, a DJ, and string trio. They said they could accommodate up to 250, but I don't see how that would fit without putting tables on the upper entrance level. (Note: great venue for 100-200 folks!) Ruth's Chris has an exclusive contract with the South Bend Country Club, so we indulged in excellent food and plated service from Chef Ivan, our coordinator Mary Beth, and their team!
