We both have fairly stable contract jobs, and have a history of expensive rentals, with no evictions. We applied to rent one of their properties in southeast Portland, and after a day, were told that there wasn't anything wrong with our applications, and we could get the keys the following day. On the following day, we recieved no word, (they had said they would call "in the morning") so we called at around 1pm, only to be informed that because of our sources of income (protected category from discrimination in Oregon), they wanted not only one of our parents to cosign, but an additional $2000 deposit. (the original terms were for one month plus one $1200 deposit) When I informed them that this was legally discrimination in the state of Oregon, they said "Oh, we meant an additional $800 deposit" Which we agreed to. They said they would contact us today, which they have not done. Because they have misled us, and discriminated against us, we are now both locked in to move-out dates, without a realistic expectation of having a new place. I will be filing a lawsuit against Resources Northwest next week, and have already reported them to the state for discrimination.

This company takes advantage of seniors. I moved in in October with a dirt rent of $944. The following April first the rent was raised to $1,605-a 59% increase. After one abusive occasion, I tried to get a no contact order and Theo and his boss interfered with my witnesses telling them they could not appear for me or write an affidavit for the court. This is witness tampering. They, Theo and his boss Gian lie all the time. It is unfortunate that they don't have any people skills. I was a property manager for Ewing and Clark in Magnolia, Seattle and if I was sent Theo as an employee, I would have fired him on the first day! In addition, the high space rent has caused our property values to drop by 50%.

Multiple residents called Sterling repeatedly for weeks with no callbacks and no responses. When I called their Vancouver, WA office requesting our property manager's contact information, the receptionist refused to provide a last name and was shockingly rude. June & August rent statements arrived with zero Sterling contact information -- no address, phone, email, or website -- despite their introduction letter devoting an entire page to payment instructions. July rent statement included a page with contact information, but only after I sent Scott Hess a copy of my MMCRC complaint. After I cited ORS 90.305 in writing and contacted their licensed property manager Scott Hess directly, Sterling responded promptly and provided individual contacts and park rules. Prior to that: weeks of silence. Our community consists largely of working class residents, many non-English speaking, elderly, and disabled. Sterling's responsiveness appears directly proportional to how much leverage a resident has. Documentation exists. MMCRC has been notified." I have no idea what we are paying these people for. The tone of their letters to homes owners are threatening and punitive. Our rep yesterday actually told me that "they were there to come after us" when he was speaking about compliance. When I questioned that categorization enforcing the HOA bylaws, he said, "Oh, I'm sorry, let me be PC (politically correct) with you, then he proceeded to rant in a very sarcastically "proper" tone. Their record keeping is abysmal, and I actually believe that some of their practices may not even be illegal.
