I usually spend Christmas week with my family in St. Louis. Until this year, there were only three…read moreyoga studios that taught hot yoga: two Bikram studios and one that taught vinyasa. I really hate vinyasa with a passion and I wasn't too gone on the Bikram studio that I had tried before. So, I was thrilled to find Prana Yoga after some googling. Prana Yoga is tucked in an unassuming strip mall in the northern suburb of Des Peres. (So, don't worry about parking because its plentiful.) Prana was founded by a couple of Bikram certified yoga instructors who wanted to teach yoga styles other than Bikram. I took class the 90 minute Prana Hot Yoga class from the owners Mary Jane Cusumano and Melanie Zuanich on two separate occassions. As you would expect, you do some, but not all of the Bikram series and some new yoga poses in a heated room. You also do a bit of "core" work which reminded me of CorePower. The instructor doesn't actually demonstrate any of the postures and there is a little podium at the front of the room. This was reminiscent of Bikram but that's where the similarities ended. The instructor does not bark orders at you and doesn't wear a wireless mic. There is a hardwood floor and no stinky carpet. Check-in was welcoming and friendly. Your second class is free and if you take their Prana Hot class you get free towels in the changing room. The changing room is HUGE so you don't have to worry about bumping into people. There are no lockers in the changing room though. Overall, the studio is very clean. You can tell that the owners actually takes pride in the way it looks. Prana is a great place to practice if you are looking for an alternative to the St. Louis Bikram.

She is effortless in her teaching, and speaks as if she's a friend guiding your body from shape to shape. There's no pretense to her presence, just authenticity and a true passion for what she does. I moved away from a very strong yoga practice and community back home at a studio I adore, and this place already feels like home away from home. The practice space: Thoughtfully appointed with a laid back feel, it's a perfect space to flow. The ceilings are tall, light is abundant, and there's plenty of wall space for an end-of-class legs up the wall savasana. Juicy. Lots of plants and greenery, plus wood and gauzy curtains that lend a very breezy energy. At a glance appears to have space for 15-20 mats (give or take). Logistics: There's one restroom shared by a few wellness businesses in the communal hallway. Entry to the space requires walking up a flight up stairs - there's no elevator that I've been able to find. Parking: Ample street parking - and directly across from Schnucks, so it's perfect to get some weekend or evening grocery shopping done after class. Extras: The community seems to interact with one another and know each others names and faces. Very friendly studio, options galore. Lots of options given and all levels of experience in class. Can't wait to keep coming back again and again!

I researched yoga studios and loved the feel and messages on Shanti's social media feeds. That was 2022 and now I am a devotee and found an AMAZING community that goes beyond the mat. I could go on and on, but looking forward to my upcoming 200th class and beyond!

The instructors are all fabulous and very encouraging. They are very supportive of a new person trying to do the exercises properly. The next two teachers didn't work as well for me - clearly knew their stuff, but weren't oriented toward beginners and seemed irritated when I would ask questions. I emailed the owner, Melissa, to give her some feedback on this and ask her advice. When I sent that message - friendly, complimentary of much of my experience while critical of the lack of beginner support - I expected a response in kind. Instead, I got some of what seemed like random boilerplate ("we offer group exercise classes" - yes, I know, I've been to three of them!), some defensiveness ("my teachers have worked here for five years!"), and some PR-speak ("Barre3 is as much about community as the workout itself. Our goal is for our clients to leave feeling stronger and more empowered"), but very few answers. I asked which teachers would be best for beginners and was told "all of our teachers have their own teaching style," which doesn't help. Melissa did say she would show me the moves to help set me up for success. I also asked why they didn't have any plus-size clothing in their boutique area up front, and was told that they carry only a limited selection in the store but they have a sign stating they'll special-order other sizes. She even sent me a picture of the sign, which cracked me up - I believed her. I mentioned in my email reply that having any item in the store in a plus size would have helped me feel more included, and the answer was, "We are absolutely inclusive." That's....not how that works. I had no idea when I sent my initial message that I was going to end up being unwilling to go back to this studio! I'd expected a conversation to happen and for me to go back to certain teachers that were best for beginners, perhaps armed with modifications. But Melissa was so defensive and so unwelcoming that I don't feel comfortable returning. Luckily, there are many more barre studios in St. Louis.
