I love that there's a direct flight between Raleigh and Orlando, but flying SW from here is kind of a drag. The terminal can get crowded and the way the seats are configured, it's not really the best layout for handling the crowds. They can do better with this as I'm sure they have some say-so over this. The other thing about the terminal is the food is terrible there with a crappy version of a decent Mexican fast casual chain, a sketchy burger place, and one of the worst pizza places I've been too. I don't think that's entirely on Southwest, but it makes me want to fly on an airline that goes to the "good" terminal. read more

This airline used to be one of my favorites, but the recent changes have really taken away many of the perks that made it stand out. They now charge for checked bags and assigned seats, which were benefits that previously made flying with them more appealing. With all the added fees, the overall cost has increased significantly, and I no longer consider them a budget airline. At this point, they feel much more like any other carrier, often at a comparable or even higher price. It's disappointing to see the airline move in this direction. The flight was very nice as usual. The planes were clean, the flight attendants kind and attentive and always friendly. Now on a flight from BWI to GSP I forgot my pocketbook under the seat! Yup! Well, thank goodness for Trinae and Tee! They went above and beyond to get my bag back to me the next day so my trip wouldn't be ruined and I could still go on my cruise! Southwest isn't what it used to be. It's seems like ever since the airline got rid of the perks they were known for they customer service in person and over then phone as got rapidly down the toilet. The flight attendants are not very friendly and more just rushed everyone to sit down in a rude tone. They have redone the inside seats on a lot of the planes, however the seats are extremely uncomfortable in my opinion. When arriving to the airport it's takes 45 mins or more to get your bags from baggage claim not matter the airport as well. This is completely ridiculous. Flew in and out of RDU with Southwest Airlines and they were a pleasure to fly with. It's never a full flight both ways. Staff was really friendly and accomdating on the flight. I got a whole can of sparkling water instead of the little cup. Each of my flights to RDU, I flew in speciality designed planes which was an absolute treat. No issues with the flight regardless if we were delayed a few minutes. I do think the check in process at the front was a bit odd compared to most airports I've been too but again, RDU is small! Check in wait times are also short so you're not waiting forever to check in at the Southwest gate. read more

I just arrived on Flight 5315 from Nashville. My husband required wheelchair service. A wheelchair attended by the name of "Sushilla" pushed him to the baggage pickup area and just left him. She did not wait for the baggage to arrive, she did not offer to help to the shuttle area, she did not do anything. This was the first time flying Southwest. Cancelled flights left and right. My flight just got cancelled again. Not a reliable airline. Their planes are not clean. No food is offered in their flights, just a tiny snack mix bag, which would be fine if not so many of their flights ended up being cancelled and you having to take 3 connections. By-the-way, if they cancel your flight and rebook you, southwest will not honor your initial boarding position, you will be at the very end... because their cancellation is your fault. read more

The flight attendants were very nice and the plane was clean. Unfortunately I have an allergy to the snacks that they served on both southwest flights I took, and it's an airborne allergy, so even people eating it around me caused me to have a reaction. It was unexpected on the first flight from BWI to RDU so there was nothing for it, but before the second flight from RDU to Phoenix, I talked to an attendant outside to see if they had different snacks that could be served or if I could sit at the front so contact would be limited, and I was essentially blown off. I then talked to an in flight attendant about it and they said there was nothing they could do. I wore a mask, but I still had a reaction on the flight. It just seems to me that it should have been more of a priority of the airline to keep their passengers safe and offering an alternate snack, even just to the people around me. read more

I love flying by southwest. When I need to fly somewhere, I always check to see if a southwest flight is available to the destination city. Usually, I find the best rate with them. Since I could fly with two bags and not pay extra for them, that is always a motivating factor to fly with them even if the flight costs slightly more than the other ones. I hardly ever had any complaints with Southwest. My flying experiences were always pleasant. Their staff are always nice and friendly. Some of their flights have the hilarious flight attendants who make the flight memorable. The tiny drinks and peanuts they offer on the flight are definitely a nice touch since most of the airlines do not offer anything for "free" anymore. I hope Southwest does not get rid of these little details. Now, the most important reason I fly with them is the flexibility they offer when it comes to flight changes and cancellations. Even though, with a cancellation, I would only get a voucher and not a refund, it is still worth booking the flights with them. It offers a peace of mind. First if there was NO STARS I would have given that...On 7-12-19 at approximately 2:15 pm we showed up to Raleigh Durham International airport to drop off my 2 daughters 10 and 14 with my wife There was no line and the First Lady was very short in conversation and all the employees to include security were very busy on their cell phones. She refused to give me and my wife a gate pass so we could both walk our daughters to the the boarding gate. They both have never flown and were very anxious about going on the flight to Texas to see their family. After a very rude exchange from the southwest Employee that informed me to speak with TSA I left my wife get the boarding pass so at least she could walk to the boarding gate with them. TSA stated they had no issues and did not know why they would not let both parents escort their children to the boarding gate to insure their safety I then walked all the way back to the southwest counter and a lady named Jennifer still refused a gate pass after I relayed the message from TSA I then asked for her name and she refused and offered to give her employee ID number and I responded please do. She then got aggressive and said are you really going to make a report because I won't give you a gate pass? Bags fly free! At least the first two do, as long as they're under 50# each. Airline blackout on the east coast and SW was flying again shortly after the blackout was lifted. We were 20 minutes past when our connection was supposed to take off in Chicago and SW held the plane for people to make their connections from other incoming flights as well due to the east coast blackout. For me, Southwest is the way to go. The first two bags are FREE. That alone puts Southwest at the top of my list, but it doesn't stop there. At RDU, baggage check usually goes quickly. Because it's the only airline at Terminal 1, it's really easy to get through TSA. The staff is friendly and helpful, and I love that they're often funny. It helps to relax the customers and make us feel more comfortable. Plus, I can't remember the last time my flight was delayed. I recently sat next to an off-duty flight attendant who told me that the airline is very strict about being on time, and it shows. If I had a choice, of course, I'd rather be able to choose my seat ahead of time, but seating is very well organized. You can pay more to get on the plane earlier with preferred seating. Southwest Airlines does not fly to Honolulu Hawaii just yet, so it was a treat to fly them when I'm already in the states. This time it was a flight from Raleigh Durham regional airport to Chicago midway airport on Saturday 6/4/2016 evening. Southwest airlines checking in process is quite unique, just because I am used to zone one and zone two systems of the legacy carriers, like delta airlines and united airlines. So this is definitely different for me, although similar. You get assigned to boarding groups based on how fast you check into your flight. Sooner the better, obviously! For this flight and subsequent flight to SJC from MDW, I got boarding group B 1-15 and group B 16-30. Not bad, but not good either, since the fun spots are usually the ones who board the first. Southwest airlines pride themselves on being low airfares plus a sense of fair responsibility, where they don't charge baggage fees. Southwest airlines do not have a first-class cabin either. They have business class ticketing, but that's probably due to them boarding early. I got to fly Southwest that they because they were the more cheaper options for me to get out of Raleigh Durham international airport compared to other carriers with the same itinerary. The overall experience with southwest airlines is pretty good, although it was weird having to have open seating and trying to find a good spot when I'm used to assign seating. It was kind of like sitting on a yellow school bus where you just need to find open seating and a place for your bags especially when you're the last groups to board. It's nice to be boarding in the B groups though. More time to find space for yourself and your luggage. Southwest Airlines prides itself as being the alternative to the legacy carriers, such as Delta, American, and United Airlines. They thrive on the cheap airfares that many travelers in the US have come to know and adore. I've flown my share of Southwest Airlines flights before, but thought it was just play, especially when there's really no 1st class cabin, unless I'm wrong. Their open seating policy is an interesting one, although it was nice to pick and choose instead of being close to a person I didn't like. Or you can get a window seat, if you can. Southwest Airlines operates in most major airports throughout the country and that's great. More and more, I try to incorporate Southwest Airlines into my travels since they can be significantly cheaper than that of the legacy carriers and that saves $$ and sometimes time as well, depending on direct routes and departure & arrival times. Flying with Southwest Airlines was decent though, it was different than what I was used to. The biggest thing that I experienced was that they confiscated my boarding pass when I boarded, since there's no seat assignment, they took the boarding pass. This Southwest Airlines flight from Raleigh Durham (RDU) to Chicago Midway (MDW) was as pleasant as it came. The service was as average as it can possibly can get when it came to air travel. You expect decent service from gate to gate without minimal hassles, unless the plane is delayed or some mechanical issue that has everyone groaning and waiting to get the hell out of there and onto their final destinations. The in flight service was as good as it can get when it came to getting drinks. I ended up getting the free soda pop and left the liquor choice for another day. While Southwest Airlines has its groupies and loyal following, I'm a casual fan of theirs, being that Southwest Airlines does not fly to Hawaii just yet. For the most part, southwest is a regional carrier, like Alaska airlines and JetBlue. While they have code sharing agreements with the national and international carriers, southwest will always be a regional carrier to me. While the flight experience was anything but, the landing at Chicago Midway was hard and very scary. I thought I was going to die that night. It was the most roughest landings I've experienced in a long while and I've been flying for 8 years already. The overall experience here at southwest was alright, despite the rude awakening while landing. Decent pricing versus the legacy carriers - although doesn't hurt to compare pricing. Yes, it's in the "old" terminal at RDU. Yes, you have to plan where where to park in the daily garage, so you can avoid a long walk to the terminal. But... that having been said, I actually prefer using Southwest at the old terminal. The reason? Because they only share the space with Airtran and the security check point is literally right inside the door to the terminal. That means you get processed through security in about 5 minutes, vs. the new terminal where the rest of the carriers are. Plus, there's a small number of gate in the old terminal, so the walk to your flight is short as well. Be sure to download the Southwest App to your phone for easier check in. Just set a reminder on your phone for 24 hrs before your flight, click the App, enter your reservation number, and you're all but guaranteed to be in the first seating group when it's time for you to board. read more

Got totally screwed by Southwest today. Had a NS flight from Tampa to RDU, paid for early bird and had group A seating, scheduled to arrive RDU 6:35pm. Well, SW cancelled that flight. Because of storms in Raleigh, right? NO, because the plane was expected to go on from RDU to DEN and could not. So rather than take all of us to RDU, they chose to screw us all and wanted the plane to stay in TPA. I write this as my 6:35 flight from Chicago Midway (that was my new route) is delayed until 11:40pm getting in at 2:30am. Oh, and I had to pay $70 to buy my way back into A group on the 2 legs. Just love southwest airlines with the open seating. Boards and disembarks faster than any other airlines, crew is always pleasant and frequently funny. Seats seem a bit roomier than others too. My plane was late and they announced that they had checked and all connecting flights would be OK. It is amazing how far some basic customer service and kindness can go to make flying a less crappy experience. Especially since I fly for business and bit for pleasure. If only southwest flew everywhere I needed to go. I would give zero stars if I could but that's not possible...we booked this flight on 7/12/19, flight was at 2:40, we were at the check in line at 2:00pm. First time we used this airline, we had young travelers that we needed to walk to the gate. The girls at the check in counter were very rude and didn't have any customer service skills, all four acted as though they were miserable and didn't want to be there, did I mention how rude they were! So we approach the counter to check in bags and get boarding passes (first time my children 14 & 11 had ever been in an airport or on a plane- first time we as a family had ever been to this airport) the first girl at the counter was short and rude, didn't try to explain the process, my daughters (and my husband and I) were already anxious. No one else was in line to check in, all of the girls at the check in counters were on their cell phones. The one girl that we approached acted as though we were impeding on her personal time and her attitude was terrible; she knew our daughters were young travelers and didn't offer to provide a gate pass to my husband and I to escort our daughters to the boarding gate, my husband and I didn't know we needed to get the gate pass at this encounter, we received the boarding passes for our daughters and proceeded to the upstairs TSA security pass to get to the boarding gate. Once we got upstairs to go through boarding security, we showed the boarding passes for our daughters and asked about us having a gate pass to escort them, it was then we were told by the TSA that we had to go back to the check in counter to get a gate pass. So we went back downstairs to the counter and asked for gate passes (mind you the girl STILL HAS A NASTY ATTITUDE), at this point we were refused two passes and she would only issues one. With an attitude she said "it's not my fault, these aren't my rules, you'll need to take that up with TSA", so I proceed to get my pass and my husband walked away upset and angry that she refused to let us both go with our girls. We went back upstairs and went through TSA, were the gentleman stated they were not sure why the girls at the counter wouldn't issue both of us a gate pass but she should and it shouldn't be a problem. At this point my husband went back downstairs AGAIN to talk to the girls to inform them that the TSA said they didn't have an issue with both parents receiving a gate pass, at this point me and our daughters had to go in and get to the gate so that they didn't miss their flight. When he got there the girls were still not busy with other customers and was still very nasty and rude; he approached Jennifer and she gave him a hard time about it (acted like she was calling someone) but ended up giving him a gate pass in the end; by the time he got through security and to the boarding gate he was to late. The girls had already boarded our daughters both were in tears and scared when they left my arms to board the plane. Once on the plane they were unable to sit together, you would think that a Good Samaritan would see that these two young girls are scared, upset and was close to one another and needed one another and wouldn't dare split them up (would switch seats) and would let them be together BUT NO ONE CARED. When leaving the airport, all employees that we passed were on their cell phones, one was watching a movie on her phone and wasn't even aware of her surroundings. Bottom line it was a terrible first experience and we will avoid using this airline and airport when our family needs to fly. If we weren't given such a hard time about the gate passes initially and was both allowed to have one then my husband wouldn't have missed our daughter boarding the plane, he could have been there to join us in prayer, help ease their anxiety about flying and see the girl board the plane. BUT BECAUSE OF THOSE RUDE GIRLS HE/WE MISSED THAT OPPORTUNITY. One that can't be gotten back again. read more

I have been a long time Southwest customer flying for business out of Texas traveling all around the state and around the country. I got to the airport a little early today at RDU because I had to turn in a rental car and tried to check in and they told me that I could not due to being too early. I completely understand that and that's really not my issue. When I got called to check in and check my bags the ladies working the ticket counter was not the most pleasant person to deal with. After I was told I could not check in I asked if there was another flight earlier that I could take instead. She clicked on her computer said no and screamed next and pushed me aside, when I asked again about the flight I was ignored and agent shouted next to get the next person, that is not the customer service that I've come to expect with Southwest and I am very disappointed. read more
