With the government shut down and airports in disarray United refused to cancel my reservation without $150 fee. Of course it's only a credit, not a refund, also. This company is determined to make a buck off a 70 year old who doesn't want to get stuck on a layover in the middle of the country for who knows how long. They are going by the letter of the mandate, not the compassion behind it. Furthermore, they can't seem to hire anyone who can speak English without a heavy accent--rapid-fire sentences with only a word here or there that betrays it's in English. There were 4 other flights (other airlines) that were to land after that and did not cancel. Had to rent a car. Drove the 4+ hours and got to RDU around 8:30. No issues and no weather to speak of. Recently - I went on a trip to Houston Texas leaving in the afternoon- I was surprised there was no service available on the outside - finally an American Customer representative noticed my husband and I and very kindly went inside to get someone to help me with the accessible situation. Once inside the hub at terminal 3 - at the right is an area where accessible challenged travelers can get service and help. I think it would be helpful if there was a sign on the outside with that information- Once in my chair, the customer representative was very helpful and friendly- able to get me through security fairly quickly plus I had registered on line 24 hours prior. I enjoyed the lounge upstairs- there was an abundance of different foods and drinks - fruits - hot food - desserts and alcoholic beverages if desired & the service team very professional. The process of boarding went well - the flight left on time - as a matter of fact - we arrived in Houston 30 minutes earlier than scheduled. Kudos to the pilots and flight attendants for making the flight comfortable Pleasant & safe!! read more

Ugh. We booked an international round-trip flight from Raleigh to Seville, ESP via the UA website. The instructions informed us that 'Basic Economy' excluded a checked bag and would not permit us to select our seats. 'Standard Economy' ($200/person more) would include one checked bag and allow us to select our seats. Once we purchased, we proceeded to select our seats. However, after our purchase, we were informed that UA contracted the outbound flights to Lufthansa (LH). As a result, we were required to pay LH an additional $40/per person/per leg, or a total of $80 more per person in order to select our seats. Upon detailed conversations with both LH and UA, were were told there was no remedy, other than our required incremental payment of $80 more per person to select our seats. Ugh...this is fraudulent advertising at its finest, and once again, the airlines working to lie, cheat, and gouge every bit of $ from the traveling public. We will never fly UA again. read more

I flew back from NY on October 10th 2022 and apparently the flight attendants have never done this before. They put a trophy in a seat. Instead of a passenger . They were rude and everyone had to put everything up except another United flight attendant that had her boyfriend/husband with her in a seat ahead of me. United got me to where I was going, from COS to RDU with a connection in Chicago (O'Hare). I survived it and did not end up getting sick. The flight attendants were friendly enough, but my goodness, a connection that only was supposed to be an hour + between flights turned into less than 1/2 hour, and I used every second of it to get from one terminal (F) to another (C) at O'Hare. I barely made my connecting flight to RDU and was seriously out of breath as I boarded the next plane. The flight attendant quickly got me some ice water to help cool me off. Catching a connecting flight should NOT be this stressful. The commuter jet they used to get from COS to Chicago should be retired - it was not on time at the destination and the plane seemed to suddenly drop dozens of feet during the flight on a consistent basis, leaving my stomach lurching, feeling like it was left on the ceiling despite there not being any real turbulence. I did not feel safe on this flight at all. I'll stick to SW and AA as much as I can. read more

Customer service is awful. First of all, my husband and I booked our flight together, but our assigned seats were nowhere near each other, and the only way we could get our seats together was by paying an additional $120. This is ridiculous for flights that already cost several hundreds of dollars. We then arrived at the airport early to talk to a United representative to see if they could help us with seats. There were two United reps standing at our gate, which was finishing up boarding the prior flight, however literally everyone had already boarded at that point. We asked if they could help us, and one of them very rudely, without looking up, said "no, we will NOT help you while we're boarding another flight." The other one was nicer, but said "we can't help you now, come back 1 hour before your flight." So we proceeded to try to use the kiosks in the United terminal to talk to a customer service representative, however we were on hold for a solid 40 minutes and the machine kept asking if we wanted to keep waiting. We also tried the option of calling or doing the online chat via the QR codes around the gates, but the same thing happened. That took us to right about 1 hour before our flight, so we went back to the gate and asked the same two United agents, who were no longer boarding the prior flight. They again refused to help and said we had to wait until other agents got there. We asked when that would be, and they said they didn't know. The same rude one from earlier told us we should try using the kiosk or calling, which we told her we had done and hadn't gotten through, so she told us that we should go back to another terminal to talk to the United customer service desk (which would have been a solid 30-minute walk there and back). We told her that was absurd, and she said "it is absurd. I'm just giving you your options that you can choose from," (which clearly are terrible options). All the signs around the gates say "if you need assistance, talk to a United agent," so we asked if they were United agents (they clearly were) and they just didn't answer. Eventually, some other agents showed up, shortly before boarding started. They were nice, but at that point, all the seats had been assigned and they couldn't help anyway. I asked why they split up people who book together, and he said, "I don't understand why the algorithm does that, it just does." My husband and I couldn't even trade seats with someone because we were both middle rows and no one is going to agree to trading an aisle or window for a middle seat. This all seems like a ridiculous ploy to make customers pay more money to have the decency to sit with a family member. And on top of that, the customer service is absolutely atrocious. We will avoid flying with United for future fights. read more

My dad traveled to Vietnam from NC (RDU airport) and needed help with the passport. There was a lady helping us, she's middle-aged and has short blond hair ( I'm kind enough not to ask her name). My dad has a Vietnamese passport so the information in there will not be the same order like in the US (ex: we put the date first and then the month, the last name first, middle and then first name,...), I show her which one is the last name, first name, the date and month of birth.... and she handed me my dad's passport and was mad at me for no reason. I just wanted to make sure everything in correct order, I guess she was mad at me because I told her the right information??? If she's just kindly said to me that she couldn't do it, I'm happy to have other people to help me. Then Lynette came to help my dad with the bag checking and the wheelchair requested, She's amazing and patient. My flights have been ok. They are behind the times. Make sure your phone or other devices are charged. They have no place to plug in. To watch or listen to something, you have to use your own device. Make sure you download their app before you get on the plane if you want to watch a movie. I didn't know that, and once I was on the plane, I couldn't get it to download. I had a 6 hour flight with nothing to do but try and sleep. It was terrible. Charge your devices and download the app, before your trip, or you will be without them. read more

Flew from Sea-Tac to RDU on a red eye flight with 2 adults and 5 kids. Flight staff was very helpful. This airlines offers movies but no headphones to listen to the movies and there are no pillows available even on overnight flights. Gate staff was horrible. I attempted to order united tickets on early Friday morning but had to check my schedule at work the next day. I noticed that they offered a 72 hour fare lock for $6.99. I purchased the lock and checked my schedule. The tickets were for $1700 and fit my schedule. On Saturday, a little over 24 hours later, I checked the united website for the tickets; however, the website needed the confirmation code from the fare lock. I checked my email yet haven't received a confirmation email on the fare lock yet. I figured that I must have entered my email wrong so I contacted their customer support by phone. The first time I called, the representative said that he could not locate the number without a confirmation email. I gave him my name, email, charge number from the credit card yet he continued to say that he was unable to find it. He apologized and ended the conversation. I called back an hour later and spoke to a second representative who told me that since I had not received an email, the charge was not accepted by them and that I would not be charged for the fare lock. I asked if I could still purchase the tickets for the price offered by the fare lock. She replied that the fare lock price was $1950 and that the $1700 price was never offered. I thanked her for her time and decided to fly canada air instead for a similar price. This was Saturday at 3:00pm. Sunday at 1:00am I received an email for the first time about my fare lock; 48 hours after my purchase. At this point I had already purchased tickets that were non-refundable thinking that the representative was correct and my fare lock did not exist. I contacted United asking to be refunded for the $6.99 because I should not have to pay for a service that was not offered as advertised nor able for me to access. After explaining the situation, the representative's response was as follows: Thank you for contacting United.com Web Support. I am not sure why the reservation was not found. First of all, when a Farelock is purchased, United provides you with a confirmation number for your itinerary so that you can easily find the reservation. I am showing that an email reminder was sent to you on Sunday, October 25th shortly after midnight and then again on at approximately 2 a.m. on October 26 to advise the Farelock was expiring. Both of those reminder emails contained the confirmation number (PSCND9) needed to retrieve the reservation and click to purchase the reservation (or to give to an agent to have them ticket the reservation for you.) I was easily able to retrieve the reservation by putting in the flight number and flight date and passenger name. I show that the Farelock charge was shown on the reservation with a document number which indicates it is not pending but is a valid charge. As the Farelock charge is a non refundable charge and was not ticketed before expiring, The reservation would be found by the flight date or the confirmation number, but not the farelock 016 document number. The itinerary was indeed lock in for the fare that was provided at the time of the booking. I am unable to refund that fee at this time. Thank you for using united.com. Regards, Lisa B. I have had the worst experience! I get 400$ worth of credit to use through United and have to pay a 267$ plane change fee when literally it's my credits to use. So by the end of the final cost I'm paying 800-900$ in plane tickets for 1 Adult and 1 child. That is ridiculous. Last min, our flight was delayed a hour making us miss our connecting flight. 10 days later, flying home we ended up having another delay! This time 12 hours!!! PSA (primarily to make myself feel less frustrated): After traveling with my boyfriend today, I can confidently say I will NEVER be flying with United ever again. The 45-minute delay did not bother me, but what did was the fact that they overbooked our flight without accounting for excess weight which would throw off the balance of the aircraft. So because of their lack of consideration for people's time, they had to offer someone on the flight $1500 in airline points to reschedule their flight and exit the plane. Then, because of the lack of space for carry-ons, both of our bags were tagged and thrown below deck (all in the same place) only for my boyfriend's to be lost. No one could tell us what happened to it, but we didn't have time to address this given we were five minutes from missing our next flight to Raleigh. Luckily, we made it to the door in time. Upon our arrival to Raleigh, we spoke to someone in the baggage check office who had the audacity to make us feel like it was our fault the bag was lost since we didn't have a stub from the ticket put on the luggage. We were not given any sort of stub. She then proceeded to tell us "not to worry" after she messed up the address on our lost bag claim, twice. Needless to say we aren't counting on hearing from the airline about the bag. It isn't so much the lost bag as how we were treated throughout the whole process. Frankly, it was insulting. They've most certainly lost our business and I may not be any figure of authority, but I recommend hiring competent employees who have the first idea about how to talk to their customers.
