I spoke with several friends who are physicians and multiple of them told me that Dr. Shulkin is the best in his field and who they would go to themselves. Before seeing him, I had done vision therapy and used glasses with prisms. Neither of these solutions fully corrected for the issue. Dr. Shulkin was highly reassuring and said I was a great candidate for surgical correction, which would involve moving a muscle in each eye by about 5 millimeters. He said both eyes would take a combined 15 minutes and that he estimated an 85% chance of perfect outcome on the first surgery, with a small possibility that a follow-up would be needed for minor correction. The procedure itself was very simple, though it requires general anesthesia due to the whole cutting into your eyeball thing. The facility was great, people were friendly, and pre-op and post-op instructions clear. Dr. Shulkin checked in with me several times to be sure things were going well afterwards and noted that the outcome looked fantastic. There was a little soreness which improved markedly within a couple days, and 2 weeks later other than a little redness, there are no visible signs. Most importantly, the results were great. Alignment is perfect, and function is 100% with muscles seemingly in full balance. I had waffled on doing this surgery for years, but am very glad I did. I highly recommend Dr. Shulkin.

He frequently talked over me rather than listening to my concerns. Unfortunately, my results were very disappointing. The outer corners of my upper eyelids opened up after surgery, leaving me with visible scars that remain tender. Even now, it is painful to apply eye makeup in those areas. In addition, my lower eyelids were left with noticeable bags beneath both eyes. The doctor attempted to correct the problem in the office, but the procedure was unsuccessful. Despite receiving local anesthetic, I could still feel pain during the treatment, and when I expressed that I was hurting, I was essentially told that the pain was "in my head." At each follow-up visit, my concerns were minimized, and I was repeatedly told that I still looked better than I did before surgery. That was not the reassurance I was seeking. I wanted my complications acknowledged and addressed with compassion and professionalism. After my final follow-up appointment, I decided I would not return. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this doctor for cosmetic surgery. Patients deserve to be heard, treated with respect, and have their concerns taken seriously--especially when dealing with elective procedures and their outcomes.
