Extremely disappointing experience at Southwestern Eye Center. I waited over 45 minutes past my appointment time without a single apology or any real explanation. Every time I asked what was going on, I was told "5 more minutes"--over and over again. Those 5 minutes turned into nearly an hour. What made it worse was the lack of basic courtesy and communication. No one came to update me, no one acknowledged the delay, and no effort was made to respect my time. If you're running behind, the least you can do is be honest and apologize. Patients plan their day around appointments, and this kind of service is unacceptable for a medical office. I would not recommend this place if you value your time or expect professional treatment. read more

I'm watching people leave upset as I sit in the office waiting for my appointment, which was at 12:40 (I completed online check in to avoid any hold ups) and I haven't even been taken into a room yet and it's 1:15. Just watched another person walk out. WHY??? Are you overbooking or are the providers just taking too long with each patient??? This should not happen and is ridiculous! POOR office time-management. The doctors are good however the business is ran poorly. Long wait times on the phone only to be transferred for a long period (20+ mins) and then transferred a 3 rd time. I had called the number that they text me to use to call and when they answered, they said it was the wrong number that I need to call another number. It doesn't seem like the right handles with the left hand is doing. Trying to pay a bill is quite laborious. It took me three days to get through just to pre-pay a bill Because they wouldn't do some surgery without being prepaid. After two days of waiting on hold several times I left my phone number. I never got a call back on the third day. I called and waited it out after close to an hour. Someone answered and then they acted very confused about what to do. It's just not an easy process and whoever is managing the office is doing a really poor job. The day before scheduled cataract surgery I get a text saying they need to change the time and move it up earlier. I already had another doctor appointment scheduled for that time and cannot cancel that one so I had to cancel the entire cataract surgery because they can't seem to nail down their own schedules properly. Well, I do appreciate the care that I get when I do see a doctor there specifically Dr. Peterson and Dr. Lewis, I'm not sure I will continue to go there because it's just not worth the hassle trying to schedule appointments and pay bills, etc. Just gotta be places that have an easier process. It doesn't appear that Southwestern Eye Center is interested in trying to make themselves better, most centers listen to the feedback and adjust their business processes to make improvements. When the receptionist you answer the phone, they get very argumentative quickly and try to tell me that I'm doing it wrong. I just tell him that I'm following the directions for their text for their number that they gave me. So I'm not sure what the breakdown is, but I hope they fix it someday. read more

This eye Dr is a waste of time and money. I had 2 visit the 1st was an eye Dr visit then the Dr decided to chnag3 it do a retnal eye appt and so I came back in 3 weeks. The rental Dr did nothing but said some stuff I might need in the future and I STILL walked out with no prescription. The staff is rude and unprofessional. They just want to waste your time, your miney,and your insurance. My first visit that was a waste was over 2 hrs. 2 hr office visit just to be told t o come back and then the 2nd appt was more test and still nothing. Literally the worst eye Dr I've ever been to. America's best is better. Oh and I have diabetes, I have had 2 retinal eye surgeries so I'm not an amateur at this eye Dr thing. Trust me don't go here at all. read more

I realize I should have posted under this office and not the Scottsdale office. This office is a cattle call. Get em in and out fast, no help whatsoever from staff. I never did get into see the doctor because I couldn't get past the uneducated staff at both the call center as well as the office. The two people I spoke with argued about my insurance coverage even though neither one of them bothered to check. Neither one even asked what insurance I had. I have a medical plan that covers an exam with refraction. On top of it, both were condescending and treated me as though I was the one wrong about my insurance. Well, news for this office. I found an office that has no problem with my insurance. SW Eye, you lost a patient and a positive recommendation. I was contacted by the office manager at this location, Christina. She was very nice and said she would educate the staff about my type of insurance as well as their customer service skills. I have an appointment with another clinic so will not be using SW Eye but will upgrade my review to three stars taking Christina's word that she will follow through on educating the staff. read more

I am convinced this is some form of insurance fraud. Well I can't think of anything positive about our experience. Being new in town we used our GPS for directions. Unfortunately there are 2 companies using the same name and just about 10miles apart. We went to the wrong one. I called and they told us just come to the correct location. We were 5 minutes late for the first appointment. My husband and I were booked back to back. Covid safety restrictions were in place. Glass barriers and mask made it very frustrating to understand anything they said. There was trash on the floor and you could see fluid on the chairs armrests. We weren't happy. My husband has Alz and I softly mentioned it to Ms Patel who was doing his eye exam. She never spoke to him. She asked me questions as if he wasn't in the room. My husband was so sad about how they made him feel. Invisible is what he said. When Ms Patel finished she walked out and a few minutes later a staff member came in and said Patel doesn't have time to do my appointment. Tacky! Trying to check out was a nightmare. The kids working were so involved with what they were doing in the evening they didn't even look at us. Yes I was getting angry. After 5 minutes I turned and started walking out. Oh now they see us. Ohhhh they didn't get payment. It's the managements responsibility to train their employees. This location is a complete failure. I can't recommend. read more

This company is a cataract surgery factory. Think about it. What motivation does their optometrist have to say eventually you will need cataract surgery but not yet? They performed cataract surgery on my left eye. After the surgery my vision in that eye got worse. They discovered I had fluid under my retina. And immediately referred me to their retinal specialist. After waiting 3 months to see if the fluid would go down. It did but now I had debris and my vision was still worse. I went for a 2nd opinion two days ago. I have wet macular degeneration in the left eye. It is caused by fluid from the blood veins. My symptoms were happening from the very beginning when I originally went to South West. I'm 65 years old. After 60 AMD is very common. You would think somewhere along the line Macular Degeneration would and could have been determined Luckily I did not go with the recommendation to have the right eye at the same time. And, we've caught the left eye and attempt injections to slow the progression. The retinal specialistat SouthWest said there was nothing I could do. No injectons, no lazer. Im glad I did not give up. I just strongly suggest you consult a trusted doctor separate from Southwest to make sure you really need cataract surgery. BTW I dont need cataract surgery YET on my right eye...YET read more

I love southwestern eye center and especially my eye doctor who has been treating me for macular degeneration this past year. That being said the reason for the 3 stars instead of 5 has to do entirely with their horendous billing department. I made a big mistake by paying my balance online through my Care Credit card on October 10,2022. when I received a bill dated Nov 7, 2022 the balance still showed unpaid. I checked my care credit bill and it showed pmt has been sent to them. I called billing and was told I had to take it up at the eye center. I called care credit back and was told they couldn't give me any information that billing needed to call them at provider services and gave me the number. I took all of the copies and phone number into the eye center on November 9th and they said billing had to take care of it and they would get all the information to them. It is now December 20th. I'm getting bills saying I'm 90 days late.I've called 7 times over the past 8 weeks. I've been told it was being escalated 3 times, I've been told the manager would look into it 5 times and I've been told the manager would call me 3 times . he/she has never called me back in 2 1/2 weeks! I even left a message on his answering device. I've been told they found the payment but it's never been applied to my account. I've been told they haven't found the payment. I've been told it was sent to the wrong office and now would be sent to the correct office - that was weeks ago and still not applied to my bill. I really have lost all patience with the lying and deception! I told them if it went to collections I would sue (in a moment of frustration) and they pretty much said go ahead . I thought about disputing the charge with care credit but I keep thinking that will just make matters worse. Haven't given up yet though so I guess I'll escalate my calls from weekly to daily. read more

Worst eye care experience I have ever had. I called to have a gas permeable contact replaced after losing one from the set I got at Southwest 10 months before. After a few phone calls I was notified the Dr. who did my exam and contact order approved it since the prescription was less than a year old and still valid. Multiple phone calls with the optical shop later I was told they would not be filling it since it had expired. I said...no I just went through this, the Dr confirmed I didn't need another exam. I was then informed that according to Arizona law, contacts are equivalent to one year of dispensing and my script would not cover it. I pointed out that would mean the day after it is written the prescription expires. She said yes. I asked if I could order glasses without an exam but not contacts, she said yes. I asked to speak to a Manager. She refused saying "I am the Lead Technician, it would be my license on the line". It took me FOUR visits to get ONE pair of contacts, a gauntlet of corporate call centers, time on hold, trips to multiple clinics and you want me to go through all of that AGAIN?! read more

I had cataract surgery in mid January, knowing that I would need a new prescription once my eye healed. In early March I went to the Apache Junction Optical center to select a new pair of glasses. I have VSP insurance so my glasses were free! I was impressed with Samantha, the technician at the optical center. WRONG!. Thinking all was well I did not bother to call for updates as to when my glasses were ready. No ono called. A month went by and then some. Then the optical center closed because of Covid. I waited, thinking they would simply mail my glasses. After several phone calls and days of waiting for a reply, Samantha called to say that my glasses ''were not in the system" and had never been ordered because they were "in her tray waiting for me to let her know I wanted them" WHAT?? And that they would not be in the system until I signed some paperwork. ??? Could have sworn I signed something the day I was in the office. And she has no access to her tray until the office reopens...who knows when. And.....As the phone message says they are not taking new orders. So, basically she lost my order, or failed to process it, or mixed me up with the very elderly lady who put 2 pairs of glasses "in the tray" while I was completing my order. I am NOT IMPRESSED. Warning: always follow up a few days after ordering from Apache Junction Optical or you might be waiting a long time for your new glasses. read more

After much anticipation and asking friends about their cataract surgery I decided it was time to have the procedure done. I build furniture and also carve so good vision is critical for the exacting work I do. Started the process in July 2019 and even paid the extra charges to do a process that was supposed to make the selection of replacement lens more precise. Initially I thought things were okay, there was a lot of tearing and some discomfort but figured that was just a normal, post surgery symptoms. As time went by I developed "floaters", black specs and cobweb like objects going across my vision! Also constant watery eyes. Numerous return visits, every type of eye drop from inexpensive OTC to the most expensive prescription drops available. None worked and even had bad reactions to the super expensive ones (non-returnable of course). After some months of continually going back with complaints of constant pain in both eyes they suggested having a secondary cataract surgery which I did. Again no relief or vision improvement. I'm told my vision is good (20/30 or so but varies daily) and glasses won't be of any help. Their "diagnosis" is dry eye but every eye drop and steroid treatment isn't effective. After numerous return visits was told there isn't anything else they can do but want to send me to their dry eye specialist which isn't covered by insurance. Why go there? More expensive visits and procedures that I doubt will solve the problems caused by the cataract procedure. All in all, the cataract surgery has been a very bad decision -- one I regret daily. Always wake up with the feeling that someone has been pressing their thumbs into my eyes all night! The enjoyment I used to get from reading is pretty much gone and doing my work is challenging. Unable to read menu boards clearly, captions on television or movies, lines to cut to for my work, and the list goes on and on. The only positive thing I can say is that the staff at Southwestern Eye is pleasant but that doesn't counteract the loss of vision and enjoyment. read more

My mom using this office for 3 years now. We don't see the same doctor , but all of them really nice, patient people . Staff is very friendly. My mom didn't speak English ( Russian) and they patiently waiting till I explain and translate. Always on top of the problem , knowledgeable trustworthy doctors. Clean office. Went to my yearly appt. Walked in and had the Covid19 screening of questions and temperature taken. Went to front check in. Gave my Med Card and Driver's License in return forms were provided to me. Initialed and signed forms. Returned forms, got Med Card and Driver's License back. It's been about 15 minutes I've been here and gone through the usual formalities. Second person behind the counter then tells me I have to have a mask, second person has been there the whole time. I tell person I have a Medical Exemption, reply is: "Doesn't Matter, You Have To Wear A Mask". Check in person then joins in, now I Have Two People Saying" You Have To Wear A Mask". I reiterate that I Have A Medical Exemption. I am then told " If You Don't Wear A Mask You Have To Leave". I informed them that they were Assholes and had they ever heard of the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act). They no longer were listening, just kept saying "You Have To Wear A Mask. Just to remind you I had been here, in the building, in the waiting room, for 15 minutes. These people are Assholes. In a Medical Practice That Doesn't Accept "Medical Exemptions". Your decision if you want to deal with people like this. read more

I did a lot of research and found Dr. Horsley. I am 100% happy with the medical care I am receiving at SW Eye Centre from Dr. Horsley and his medical support staff. I changed from the Sun City office to the Maryvale office mainly because the doctor in Sun City didn't take appointments after 2:30. That was the best change I made. Dr. Tanner in the Maryvale office was able to find and fit lenses for me in a short amount of time; whereas, the doctor in Sun City had been trying from June to September, when I finally changed locations. I recommend seeing Dr. Tanner in Maryvale for any eye care need, but especially if you have a difficult or complicated prescription. read more
