I started seeing Dr. Marquard because I found him on the Ehlers-Danlos foundation website. I've been seeing the office for about seven months now, and I am extremely pleased with the care that I've received from all of the providers. Because I am a frequent user of the practice's patient portal, I do not mind the $50 administrative fee because I feel it is necessary to balance out the extra work that they have because of the patient portal. For patients with EDS, this office is a godsend as so few doctors acknowledge the disorder, more or much less treat the disorder. I appreciate the added bonus of having in-house counseling and the in-house lab. Every time I go in, I am greeted warmly and well taken care by the administrative staff and medical professionals. read more

In my opinion, based on my experiences described below, Thunderbird Family Medicine and their associated practitioners are UNETHICAL and MONEY GRABBERS. They will hold your refills and lab orders "hostage" to make you come into the clinic so they can charge you another co-pay and bill your insurance for another office visit. Background. I went to the same doctor for almost 20 years. Unfortunately, he had a stroke and could no longer practice medicine. We had a great relationship. Every year, I would faithfully pick up my lab orders, get my labs drawn, then schedule my yearly appointment to discuss the results and make any necessary changes. If something unusual came up mid-year, I would make an appointment to see him. If I needed a specialist, he would recommend a good one. Perhaps I was spoiled with this kind of patient-doctor relationship. When searching for a new primary care doctor, I asked my friends who lived nearby for a referral. Dr. Scott Marquard with Thunderbird Family Medicine received a lukewarm recommendation and had decent reviews, so I decided to give him a try. It turned out to be a BIG mistake.  Red Flag #1. The clinic charges a yearly fee just for the privilege of going to them.  Red Flag #2. On my initial appointment with Dr. Marquard, I brought in my 20 year history printed out for him along with recent lab work. My vitals were taken by the technician and I waited for the doctor. He came in, shook my hand, then we had a ~15 minute discussion, then he shook my hand and left. No look at the eyes, ears, throat. No listen to the lungs or heart. No nerve reflex test. No palpations. Nothing. Only conversation in which we discussed my current prescriptions and an upcoming international trip, among other things. I was told to call in for future prescriptions refills. Red Flag #3. When I called to get my prescriptions renewed, I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. This was contrary to what we had discussed on my first visit. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment. My resolution was to call 98 point 6 (my telephone insurance service) and pay $5 to get my prescriptions renewed (they asked to see my lab work which was current). Red Flag #4. When it was time to get my annual bloodwork done, I called to get a test added to the lab order (I found out about a test that could tell if you had a genetic disposition for blood clots - my dad died of a DVT). I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment. My resolution was to skip that test and go ahead and get my blood drawn. Red Flag #5. As my international trip to India and Nepal was getting close, I called to get prescriptions for an anti-nausea and antibiotic "just in case" as we had discussed during the initial meeting. Guess what? I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment to discuss CDC guidelines. My resolution was to wait until my annual and visit an expensive travel clinic that would be much more knowledgeable about international travel.  Red Flag # 6. After my annual and after my international trip, I called in to get a prescription refilled. Guess what???  I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment. I called again when I was almost out of medication, I told the front desk that the situation was "b*llsh#t", and that I had been in 8 weeks prior and my lab work was only 9 weeks old. She refused to connect me to a doctor, so I tried to use their portal to make the request to the doctor directly. Dr. Marquard told me via the portal that I verbally assaulted the staff and was terminated from the clinic. This was not a huge disappointment as I had already researched, found, and made a future appointment with another primary care doctor.  Note #1. All this occurred in a period of less than 8 months. Note 2. I saw another provider (NP - nurse practitioner) other than Dr. Marquard for my annual. I can't find the name as my access to the portal has apparently been terminated. I remember that a PA signed off on the visit (also a red flag???). So, patient BEWARE!!! I highly recommend finding another clinic if you value your time and money. If you choose to go to this clinic and see these practitioners, make sure to get prescriptions filled and lab work orders in hand before you leave their office. read more

I am so happy to share with you my latest experiences with Thunderbird Family Medical. I followed up with Dr.Marquard today. He was finally able to get me my wheelchair but it took going through Banner Health Home Medical to make it happen. I understand how frustrating it can be to work with multiple providers and trying to get everyone on the same page! Dr. Marquard and his staff worked diligently to get me that chair! So grateful! I found his office staff as nice to work with as I did at my first appointment with them. I am so grateful for their caring and concern for their patients. Having a rare disease (Ehlers Danlos) can be challenging, but I love how Dr. Marquard understands and stays on top of the latest developments. It is awesome to have a doctor who "gets you"! Never called me to make an appointment after my doctor sent over the referral. I gave them a week to call me. I called them and was answered by a rude lady with an attitude like I bothered her for calling. Was told immediately they do not take my insurance when my doctor called them before referring me to ask if they do, which they said yes, AND checked the website to see that they absolutely do. Tried to explain to the lady and she kept being insanely rude so I just said I would find another doctor. Ridiculous. read more

I had a telehealth appointment scheduled to go over the results of a recent scan. I logged in 10 minutes early, as requested. I was in my car between appointments, with the engine running, expecting it to be a quick visit. About 30 minutes after the scheduled time, someone finally entered the virtual lobby and let me know the doctor was finishing up with another appointment and would be with me shortly. I waited another 20 minutes before someone else joined the call, saying she would go over my results instead, since the doctor was not available. From that point, the experience felt impersonal and dismissive. I already felt like an afterthought, and the person reviewing my file seemed unprepared -- surprised by my questions and unfamiliar with my family history. It felt more like I was guiding her on what I thought needed to happen, rather than receiving expert medical advice. Overall, it was a frustrating and disappointing experience. read more

Excellent staff quick response to labs great location not only do they have Family Medicine, they now have mental health therapy.

The quality of service has changed over the years. Dr. Scott is a wonderful doctor but the fees ($50 annual administration fee and $50 cancellation fee if canceled less 24 hours) and waiting period to see him has gotten worse. read more

Been patients here for a LONG time. Had a testicular cancer scare with our son and was told to reach out to our PCP for follow up. Kim, the front desk receptionist, refused to schedule an appointment with Dr. Marquard, as my son wanted to see a male doctor considering the situation. They would not schedule an appointment without our son's insurance information which he did not have in front of him. My husband agreed to pay cash and repeatedly asked for the earliest appointment with Marquard and she would only set appointment with a P.A. Imagine our surprise when we received a letter stating my husband was no longer allowed to be seen by Thunderbird because of how he spoke to the receptionist. He will 100% agree he was angry because we had a little bit of stress happening at the time with the situation. When I spoke with Brianna we learned Dr. Marquard was out of office to attend a medical conference. Kim very easily could have informed us so we could have reached out to someone else. I actually was afraid to speak at my annual exam for fear of being cancelled after receiving this letter for my husband. Fast forward to myself, last week, terrible case of hives. Set a telehealth appt. with Caulkins for the next day. Have not seen her in person since COVID. Been seeing PA's because she is never available. Ended up going to urgent care on an emergency basis that night. Called immediately the next morning and spoke with Kim who informed me because it was less than 24 hours I would have to pay the 50 dollar fee to cancel. I hadnt even had the appointment for 24 hours. I opted to keep the appt. so I would only have to pay my co-pay. Called back spoke to Alan, who spoke to the office manager, and they waived it because I had been to urgent care. I would like to add I was very cautious of how I spoke after what happened to my husband. Only showed my disdain that an office policy for an appointment that hadn't been made for 24 hours was going to be charged for services having been rendered on an emergency basis by another provider. Thank you for going above and beyond Alan. Today I receive a letter canceling me as a patient because they are "unable to provide a satisfactory patient/provider relationship" signed by Dr. Caulkins! I don't think the problem is your patients. I think your problem is Kim and her lack of professionalism. I also disagree that during COVID you REFUSED to see ANY patients unless you were vaccinated. Isn't that against your Hippocratic Oath? Because every doctor I have spoken to about that states it is. And one more thing. As a patient of this office they are now charging YOU, the patient, 50 dollars a year to cover their medical supplies. I am THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED that your LONG TERM patients are disposable to you because of one person's complaint when she is RUDE. I will be formally putting a complaint against this office with the AZ Department of Health Services. If you are considering this office for your health needs, I would NOT recommend unless you are ok being bullied to not speak your mind because they will cancel you. It would be nice if the doctors, Marquard and Caulkins, actually were concerned and called to ask how we felt as patients being treated by their rude office staff. It's easier to write a letter with a stamped signature and let people go. read more

I've been coming to TFM for years and they have been great. Today I came in for a scheduled physical and when I got to the office they didn't have me down for a physical and said I would have to come back. Frustrated I tried to have them fix their mistake (which they refused to admit) by scheduling me for today. It didn't go well. I walked out and unfortunately probably won't return. This wasn't the first time this happened . The office manager was unapologetic, and came off like they made no mistake. He mentioned that maybe I had given them the wrong information. My doctor is great. However, I've had to talk multiple times with Kim, she handles appointments so I'm not sure if she is a medical assistant or receptionist. She was dismissive, rude, and continually cut me off. She essentially told me to deal with it when I pointed out how rude she was being. She basically said deal with it and call back later. I would give her 0 stars if I could. If she's a medical assistant I will be reporting her for unprofessionalism. Extremely disappointed. read more

My first time to this clinic, and I was very impressed! Appointment started on time, staff was very friendly, and their safety measures for COVID were impressive. The entire office worked very well together and the whole experience felt genuine. I saw one of their APPs, a Physician Assistant, and she was phenomenal. Very professional and knowledgeable. I had my blood drawn while I was there, and the lab tech was friendly and very good as well--not even a bruise or mark the next day! Highly recommend this practice. Went here yesterday, with some intrepidation. I have been looking for a new PCP for six months now and, thankfully, I have found one. Dr Scott took the time to sit and discuss my conditions, medications and the best treatment options available to me. Not putting me on a "conveyor belt"as I have previoisly found. He prescribed meds that, so far today, seem to be working, my excruciating pain has subsided and I hope it stays that way! The facility was clean, airy as I needed a blood draw, there was one onsite. Wonderful!!!! All the staff were really helpful, answering any concerns I had. I won't say "I look forward to visiting the Drs" but this office and it's employees will take away the stress. I came to Thunderbird Family Medicine a few months prior because I needed a new PCP and refill of some of my medications. I had looked around my area for clinics that were available for an appointment and they were all booked for months in advance. Fortunately, I was able to get an appointment with this clinic in a week. I saw Mickaela, one of the physician assistants on staff, for my visit. She was very knowledgeable in my condition and helped me find the best medication I needed. Mickaela was so kind and personable with her questions in order to get to better know my health, but as well as who I am as a person. This type of focus in caring for the "person" instead of just the "patient" truly is what this clinic embodies and is hard to find in healthcare. The MA Monica was so welcoming and friendly when taking my vitals, keeping me at ease. The front desk staff answered all my questions and made the process of being a new patient easy and seamless. I was even able to get lab work done in the clinic which was convenient and efficient of my time. I would highly recommend this clinic and the emphasis that they put into providing optimum care to every single person they encounter. read more

REAL BAD EXPERIENCE... As I was walkking out the door they called and canceled my appointment - no reason. Call back next week and reschedule if you still need an appointment. Wouldn't schedule me...finally got someone to talk to...no appoinments for 2 weeks...I've had this appointment for 3 sorry...call back. and hung up on me. I now keep getting text messages and phone message from them telling mnme to wear a mask into their office...message is rude and says if I don't wear a mask I'll have to go to care and schedule a tele conference. Dr. Aspen caulkins was rude and refused to listen to me. I have never in my been treated the way I have by this physician. Even though I never raised my voice, didn't talk down to her. Even tried to go back in to apologize and try to keep my appointment so I can get anti depressants as my therapist suggested and she was still rude and refused to see me. She needs to understand mental health and the way you talk to people with mental health issues is not going to go well for you or the patient. I broke down in my car because it just seemed she didn't even care and made me feel like I was a piece of shit. And this was all over my moms appointment whose appointment was after mine. So I don't go to the doctor much, but when I do, I want it to be worth my time and feel like I'm being heard. I have seen Dr Marquard twice now and he is great. I usually only go for an annual physical, but I didn't want to go to an office that was part of a medical group like HonorHealth or Abrazo group. I wanted that small office feeling, and that's what I got. They have 2 docs here (I've only seen the one), and they are able to accommodate appointments in a timely fashion. Terrible clinic. They rescheduled my first appointment on the morning of, and I had to take off work to reschedule. I show up to my appointment on time, realize I do not have my insurance card with me. Doctor is still in a room with a patient, so I call to have my card brought to me. It is less than 4 minutes away, Doctor is still in room with the patient and they tell me I have to reschedule because "THEY HAVE TO STICK TO THE SCHEDULE". Then why is the doctor still in a room with a different patient at my appointment time? Dr Calkins wasn't even ready to see me and they absolutely refused to let me keep my appointment. I went in this week as a new patient and saw Mikaela O'Neill. Every single person I encountered was friendly and made me feel comfortable and welcomed. From the receptionist when I came in, to the nurse, the person who did my labs, the provider, and the checkout receptionist who stopped what she was doing to rewrap my arm from my blood draw. The provider was not rushed. She listened and came up with a care plan collaborating with me the patient. This is really hard to find nowadays. I love the text reminders for appointments and the patient portal where you can see your notes from your visit, lab results, and message the provider with any needs. I had a question regarding my new meds, they emailed me back same day. also, referrals are given to you by the time you leave your appointment. No waiting for weeks or months to see a specialist. For someone who hates going to the doctor, I am excited to find such a wonderful practice. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Calkins for a couple years now and I am so happy I found her and her practice through a friend. She has a great bedside manner and is very genuine in her demeanor. I've been dealing with a few auto-immune issues over the past few years and I am happily on a path to healing thanks to the help of Dr. Calkins. I appreciate that her and Dr. Marquard are younger physicians who seem to be very up to speed about the newest treatments in medicine and that the office is clean and modern. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Thomas Cerato's for about a year. It was one of the more miserable experiences I've encountered when visiting a doctor. Dr. Cerato is a very nice doctor, but he has very little to no time management skills whatsoever. It doesn't matter if you are the first patient of the day, he is ALWAYS at least 45 minutes behind. Every time. This gets very old because it is evident that neither the office staff nor Dr. Cerato value the time of their patients. I think one of the reasons Dr. Cerato is always behind is that rather than actually seeing his patients in a timely manner, his office appears to be a revolving door of drug reps. Drug reps from the various pharmaceutical companies seem to come all day long and have a very friendly repoitore with the office staff and just walk right in to the back offices. Um hello? The waiting room full of patients isn't a clue that the doctor might be too busy to see you? After at least 45 minutes of waiting, your heart tends to leap a little with anticipation when the nurse calls your name, but this is only a temporary piece of excitement. The indifferent and often times uncaring nurse goes through the motions of the triage that is necessary before the doctor sees you and then closes the door behind her while you wait.....again....to see the doctor. And it's usually another 30 minutes before you see Dr. Cerato finally come through the door. So now you've spent over an hour beyond your scheduled appointment time to see the doctor, your blood pressure is up and you are anxious but you can't help but feel relieved when he does finally come through the door. Now Dr. Cerato himself is a nice enough man. He jokes around and makes you feel comfortable. He listens when you describe symptoms or concerns, but he's already made up his mind what's wrong with you before you've finished your thoughts and he's already pulling out needles to do blood work before you exhale. And then, just like that, he's sending you out to the front desk to schedule your next appointment and you are wondering what the hell just happened. About a week later, you will get a call from some nurse with the blood test results and then that's it. So, from personal experience, I would recommend avoiding Dr. Cerato's office and go to an office where you are appreciated, your time is valued, and you are actually heard. read more

Great doctors and PAs work at this location. D.O. Marquard, D.O. Clakins, D.O., PA-C Oneill, PA-C Kuhle, and the ENTIRE staff are on point. All of them have been very helpful. Unfortunately, most of us are living in an unfamiliar world. If you are without a PCM, please consider Thunderbird Family Medicine. I don't post reviews often. FIRED!!! Is the only way to end a relationship with this doctor. Yes, they start out nice enough first visit but, even their front desk gives you a wink and a nod and say "A referral will be sent, you'll receive a call next week for an appointment. " When they don't, you have to recall the office and do their job for them because they CAN NOT AND WILL NOT DO THEIR JOB!!! Staff is not trained in customer service or how to handle "PPI or PHI" (patient personal information or personal health information). Dr Marquard has brought a quality of life back to me that I have been missing for years!! My energy level was at an all time low, you know that feeling when you eat an entire turkey at Thanksgiving and fall asleep before kickoff... well that was me ALL THE TIME. I set up an appointment with Thunderbird Family Medicine and the process was easy and enjoyable. As I walked into the office I was greeted by the nicest staff, the process made me feel comfortable and the area was clean. Laura (the MA) brought me back and was very friendly, even as I walked past the nurses station all the employees said "Hi". I was nervous about being in a Drs office, wanting to figure out why I feel like I am constantly tired and feeling like I am in a 5 hour lecture on the growth of grass, just battling to stay awake. That feeling of anxiousness and worry went away quickly. Dr Marquard came into the room he had great bedside manner, wanting to know about me as a person. He understood my issues and was very knowledgeable about my symptoms. He walked through the process of getting me better, making sure I fully understood the action that we are taking. He has great patience, because explaining stuff like that to me is like trying to get a 3 year old to learn how to fix a John Deere riding lawn mower... I am sure that would be frustrating. But Dr Marquard took time and made sure I understood. Needless to say just a few weeks later I am full of energy, ready to climb Mt. Everest.... or at least a few flights of stairs. I have been coming to see Dr Marquard for about 1 year. Prior to that I had been doctor shopping for 3 years or so. I would either find an office with great staff, but a mediocre doctor (or one who runs late, or doesn't listen, or has bad bedside manner) or a nice doctor in an office with terrible staff. This office is the perfect combination! Dr Marquard has a really great bedside manner. He is kind, cheerful, and a good listener. I really felt like he heard me, and we were actually able to have a discussion instead of just a lecture like some doctors do. I ended up getting a Nexplanon placed (which is a procedure that he actually does in the office - so hard to find!) and it went really well! He did a great job, it was a really fast, painless procedure. To top it all off the staff is so great! Everyone I interacted with was kind and answered all of my questions. I didn't wait long at all, maybe 15-20 minutes tops at my appointments. Labs are done in the office which is really convenient. One thing to keep in mind is that the office can be a little hard to find; on your first visit, come a little early to make sure you can spot it.
