I have never felt so humiliated, injured (both inside and out), and unwelcome as I did by this esthetician. The Pumpkin facial ($145) includes a face cleansing, extraction, "massage," and mask treatment. I purchased it because it is indicated as being great for acne: "The Pumpkin Spice Facial is the perfect treatment for addressing acne." I arrived and filled out my form, indicating that I have acne (obv!) and am using Retin-A--they asked about this specifically. It is mentioned twice. When we started, I asked the esthetician if this would help my acne. She told me "Not really, there's another one that's better for that. Wait, which one are you getting?" This was AFTER the cleansing. She didn't even know what service I was receiving. After she put on something that burned my face (I don't know what it was since she didn't tell me anything she was doing or using), she asked what I used for cleansing/treatment, and if I used Retin-A--I said, "Yes, I indicated that on the form." "Uh, ok. Don't worry, I'll just change the rest of the treatment." Wait, what? My main problem: this treatment should have never been conducted in the first place. We fill out those forms for a reason. If I'm not a good candidate, I trust the expert to let me know. Not go ahead and figure out halfway through a treatment that she has burned my skin. Then, the extractions--the absolute worst pain I have ever felt. Even after repeatedly asking her to please be more gentle, she punctured my face and mashed it ruthlessly and told me that I had SO many whiteheads, and did I wash my face regularly? Have I ever seen a dermatologist? When was my last facial? Am I sure I really wash my face two times a day? Then, she actually said, "Wow, what is going ON with your skin?" I don't have to say how hurtful that is. But I will say. It was humiliating, and it made me cry. I have PCOS and my skin is affected by it. I even take oral medication for my acne, in addition to Retin-A--a prescription drug. In NO field is it acceptable to criticize or shame your client this way--but acne is an especially difficult condition to live with, and any skin professional should know that most of the time it isn't caused by poor hygiene. To imply so--when having read my medical history OR listened to me say out loud that my acne is hormonal would have clued her in--was unprofessional and rude. There was no massage. At that point, I didn't want her to touch me anymore, so it was ok with me. She put a mask on my face without telling me what was in it or what she was doing. A few minutes later she took it off, told me again how bad my skin was, and told me not to wash my face for a day. "But, it gets really oily. What else can I--" "Just don't wash it." "Ok." "Any questions?" "Nope." This is the longest Yelp I've ever written. But I have to let others know how I was treated here. No one who looks for help, especially with acne, should be shamed and humiliated by the people who are there to provide that help. At the very least, they should not be left burned and swollen, and utterly ashamed to even be seen. My heart is broken. UPDATE: I'm updating this review to address the response from "customer service" here. I use that term liberally, because the last thing any business should ever do in response to a negative customer experience is falsely accuse a patron of lying, rewrite facts with dishonesty, plagiarize information, and STILL fail to address any of the service concerns raised in the first place! The nature of Spa Girl's remarks here only illustrate the type of practice I was already describing--insensitive, condescending, and totally unprofessional. In addition to your customer service skills, your listening AND reading skills need work. I'd seen a dermatologist quite recently before my visit--as anyone who knows anything about "professional skin care" SHOULD realize, Retin-A requires a prescription--as does oral medication. Those come from a dermatologist. Furthermore, I indicated that I used Dermalogica microfoliant (which has a texture "like" baking soda).These prescription and dermatologist-recommended products are far from "home made," and your implying differently just shows how little about skin care you know. I love going here for microdermabrasions & facials. The place is decorated very girlish, sweet & playful. The front desk gal is super sweet and friendly. The facial gal Wendy does not chat too much. Making an appointment is a bit difficult as every time I have called I receive a voice message. Its a bit easier to book online. They do have a deal if you buy 5 classic spa girl facials you save $50 per facial. So instead of $155, you pay $105. Great deal. I buy this every year when I get my tax return. I had my very first facial ever, two weeks ago at Spa Girl. Wendy was the esthetician that took care of my face, and she was splendid. I arrived a bit late, which I do not recommended because one, you'll need to fill out an info form and two, because your service may be cut short as it will interfere with the next clients. Many would say I don't have bad skin, but I would say there IS work to be done. Wendy sure enough took care of all of my problem areas. She was very thorough when it came to extractions and I can simply tell you I cannot remember having a softer nose and skin, than the days after Wendy did her thang :p She herself has nice, glow-ey skin which you can instantly notice when you meet her. (She doesn't seem to wear much make up, if any, so it's easy to spot her good skin.) When I questioned her about making MY skin "glow", she suggested I add the pumpkin peel to my service ($20), which I did. I don't know if it was the peel or her overall facial, but something worked. My skin has more of an even tone after seeing her. (I've stopped wearing make up on a daily basis for the last year or so, so you know what I mean about tone unevenness, hence the common statement women make about "putting their face on" before going anywhere.) This place is a tad pricey, but when I called for Delmy desperate for a massage to ease my unbearably painful neck and shoulder knots, Wendy helped me book an appointment with her on her off day and even after hours (7:30!). I am grateful. Delmy is a wonderful masseuse and gives the best deep tissue rubs I've ever had. She doesn't hold back with the pressure either unlike other masseuses who are too scared to crush me (I'm only 110lbs). Oh, I've had Wendy's facials too! I love them and she's very thorough with her cleaning. If only I can blow money on a facial every month! After receiving a recommendation from a friend I decided to book a facial with Wendy at Spa Girl. Like most guys I had never had a facial and hadn't spent much time at a day spa. The appointment process was effortless as I was able to book directly online. Wendy was able to work around my schedule and even stayed a bit late to accommodate me. Before finding Wendy at Spa Girl, I had been to several other estheticians for facials and none of them are as good as Wendy! Plus, I used to have to spend way too much money, and typically other skin care salons will really try to "up-sell" you all their products and seem to only care about making money. Wendy doesn't do that. Her pricing is very affordable and she has a lot of services to offer specific to your particular needs. You can really save money too if you buy one of her packages, which is what I do. I tend to go once a month to keep my skin fresh and looking young :) In fact, the other day I was at a make-up counter at Macy's without a stitch of make-up on - and 2 women came up to me and said I had amazing skin!! My husband bought me a spa package for Christmas that I finally had time to use this week. It was fairly difficult to make an appointment as I wanted to get all of my services at once and apparently they had to juggle everyone's schedules around because of it so it took two days to nail things down. That's ok, though. I'm overly efficient and realize that not everyone else operates the same way I do so I took a deep breath and went in with an open mind. The esthetician was wonderful. She gave me a great facial and body scrub and didn't feel the need to chat the whole time so I was able to just enjoy it. The two star knock was, unfortunately, because of the massage therapist. The esthetician was very clear with her communication and told me that after I shower I should put on a robe and she will have the massage therapist waiting for me in the hallway to to take me to the next room. Great. So I showered and put on the robe. And waited. And waited. And waited. And checked my phone: 11:45 (my appointment was for 11:30). Ok... so I walked down the hall to see if anyone was in front. The girl at the desk said "oh my gosh, have you been waiting this whole time?" and apologetically took me back to the massage room where the therapist was... wait for it... napping on her table. Ok. I'm annoyed but still trying to relax. So I get on the table, she grabs the lotion, puts some in her hands, then decides that putting the bottle on my butt is a great idea. WTF?! I reached back and moved it to the side because I was uncomfortable and she actually moved it BACK to between my legs to "prevent it from rolling." That's what tables are for. Last time I checked I don't resemble a table. The massage itself was... fine. Parts of it were good, parts of it reminded me of the massage you get when you get a pedicure. The kicker, though, was that she ended forty five minutes later (the massage was supposed to be an hour). UNACCEPTABLE. I will be back to see the great esthetician again. With all the fabulous massage therapists in LA, though, I am surprised that that massage therapist has any clients. I will definitely never go back for her. read more

So I originally reviewed this salon and gave it two stars due to my experience with my first massage. The reason I am now giving it 5 stars is because I've since gone back to the salon and received an AMAZING deep tissue massage from Alexandria. She (and her magic hands) simply rock. But my great massage isn't the only thing that afforded the five stars. This salon cares about their customer. BIG TIME. And they read Yelp reviews. Basically, two months after my first massage there, I got a call saying that they knew I wasn't happy with my massage and they wanted me to come in for a complimentary massage. Now, there is no way they would know this, other than by reading my review. I thought that the fact they found me and wanted me to come in and have a better experience speaks volumes about the company. It's not some big corporate place where they couldn't give a flip about me OR my review. This is your mom and pop (so to speak) place that really wants to please, and keep a customer for life. I really respect that, and I am now a huge fan of the salon and would recommend Alexandria to anyone (she's only there Tuesdays and Thursdays so make sure to plan ahead). Definitely worth it. Where is the pink building!? I used to count on it to locate the spa. It's sort if like painting McDonald's famous arches grey, or the White House blue. The pink building was a landmark. It's one of the things that made Spa Girl stand out from the rest of the spas. The color now is so dreary and old looking. The paint job makes it look like the block is one big building. (Except for the turquoise shop). If the spa girl building HAS to be dark and dreadful looking, why not paint pink stripes above the dark mess that's going on. Just a thought. I had been really needing a facial with extraction, that being my priority. I have fairly good skin, but don't take the best care if it and wanted a push. The room was adorable with a comfy bed, trickling waterfall, relaxing music. She started with steaming my face, a few different washes, a pumpkin thing. And went at the extraction ..not gonna lie it took awhile, which served as a walk up call, followed with a mask and then lotion. She really knows her stuff, I had no idea she had been there for 11 years. I love that she really wants to change and better your skin and make a difference. I highly recommend her. The place is a little hard to stop at or even see on the street! It used to be a bright pink building but they've repainted since it's something like 10 years since they've opened as of this coming year. The problem with that is that the plain white building has no marker other than a small sign on their door, not even the black banner they've had before. Because it's a pain to locate, I suggest parking in the westfield mall across the way and just walking over. Inside is more spacious though, clean and relaxing with two long hallways for the small spa rooms. I got the slim wrap and Wendy was friendly, explained the process, and checked if I was comfortable the entire time. I fell asleep for most of the session, but I actually lost over 3 inches total by the end of it. Worth it before an event or to fit into a cute new dress! read more
