The earlier you get there the better. We arrived shortly after church on Sunday and they were out of most of their items. But what we got was still delicious. These donuts have more of a classic feel as opposed to the newer-age donuts. The cream filled with chocolate glaze was awesome and so was the cinnamon sugar donut. There wasn't a line and we were in-and-out with quick, but friendly service. Inside, it's clean, cute, and also made me feel like I stepped back in time. Spalding's is also a great value! Me and the BF took a road trip first chance we got once state restrictions lifted due to Covid pandemic!!!!!!! Had the pleasure of stopping by this little slice of heaven called Spalding's Bakery in Lexington KY on our way through the Nada Tunnel to the Smokey Mountains for a little R&R... we couldn't actually go in the old time donut shop and peruse their glass showcases of deliciousness!!! We had to order by looking at their daily choices online and/order online pull up in the parking lot and pick up. It was early and we didn't order ahead of time. Service was very fast and the workers were nice. The donuts themselves were pretty good, hard to mess up a donut. Their apple fritter was different than what I'm typically use to. There wasn't a whole lot of apple-cinnamon filling in it at all. But the flavor was somewhat there. I wish they had more variety of donuts at this location. read more

Finally got to visit Spaulding's for their famed glaze donuts I've heard about since moving to Lexington. Went on a dreary Saturday morning around 10:30. There was a line inside but it moved quickly. I ordered 6 glazed donuts and a carrot cake cupcake. The donuts were perfectly warm! Overall taste was good, not too sweet. Donut was more on the funnel cake dough side than the donuts I'm used to. Glaze was super light but the sweetness came through. Cupcake was good, but not enough carrot in my opinion. Frosting was good, not too thick. Would definitely go back to try other goodies. Nice neighborhood donut shop. It closes at noon everyday so try to come as early as you can for more options. They have typical donut selections such as glazed, long Johns, custard filled, cake donuts, and cinnamon twists. They also have cakes you can pick up and some baked goods such as gingerbread men (tis' the season) and cheesecake. There was a line when we came at 8:30 but the line moved quickly and the selection was still good. We tried the glazed, cinnamon twist, custard filled, apple fritter, and the cinnamon roll. The prices can't be beat here. That was all $5! The donuts were well done solid donuts. The Apple fritter was a little burnt. The cinnamon roll was a bit dry. Some of the donuts could be a little greasy (but hey you're eating a donut not a carrot stick). My favorite was the custard filled donut. All in all there were some donuts that were better than others and nothing stands out in particular taste wise. But for the prices I'd go back if I were craving a typical donut. For a bakery this is my favorite for donuts. Very simple and classic which is why it is so good. They are only open from 6:30 - 12 Thursday through Sunday, and only accept cash. There is an ATM within walking distance if you need it. There simple and classic ways show in their presentation as well with a simple white box tied with a string. I recommend any of their donuts. The glaze is wonderful as well as their apple fritters. It is very cleans and they have 100 health inspection rating. Every time I have been there has been a line out the door, but the line goes fairly quickly and it is worth the wait. It is a get in / get out kind of place so you have to take your donuts to go and can't sit in and eat your treat while visiting. That is the only downside in my opinion. Their prices are also the best donut prices in Lexington for what you get. They are located right across from the Jiff Peanut Butter factory so you can't miss it! Very good donuts!! It was our first time in this area to visit family and we had the plain glazed and the powdered. Very friendly service, super accommodating we got there a few moments before they closed. We loved the glazed because it was almost a croissant dough! Flaky and not oily at all. The powdered were good as well and fresh, but tasted more like a cake donut then a yeast donut. Either way we absolutely loved them!!! Oh my, when I tell you they have the best ole fashion donuts, well ........... they do!!! I grew up on these treats as a child and always remember that taste like no other. There are STILL lines out the wazoo waiting to get those donuts. While I was visiting my mother, one morning we were soo worried we would not get any, we dashed outta bed, raced to my car and screeched outta her parking lot....zzzoomm zoom zoom....str8 to Spaldings. If you haven't tried Spalding donuts then you are missing out on an amazing treat only available here in Lexington. They are made by hand and heavier than traditional yeast donuts. Some people refer to them as "ugly donuts" due their gnarly somewhat misshapen appearance but don't let looks fool you, they are melt in your mouth delicious. They remind me of some Old World German donut. You won't be inhaling 3 or 4 of these like with Krispy Kremes. The Spalding variety are more cast iron than fluff but I mean that in a good way. The original glazed are the absolute best...until you try the chocolate iced glazed! This chocolate temptress ruined me for the regular glazed and I'm afraid there's no turning back at this point!
